Overlockers & Coverstitchers / New overlocker tips
« on: February 29, 2024, 14:29:13 PM »
So, as I explained on my diary thread, my old and trusty overlocker is now no longer trusty and is in fact headed for the great scrap heap in the sky.
I'm going to be looking at new overlockers at the NEC Sewing for Pleasure in three weeks and trying out a few so has anyone any good tips that I should look out for?
I'm not too fussed with a needle threader but I do like a thread catcher.
I don't think I want to go to the expense of an air threader.
Differential feed is a must.
I'm not after specific brands or models just a few tips on things you have found useful/annoying on yours eg knife disengage easy to access etc.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I did try snipping off a teensy bit of corner @ iminei, then a teensy bit more, then a ..........
That was the problem I had with the bookshelf quilt I made my granddaughter for Christmas. One corner was so mangled i had to cover it with a corner bookmark!!
My excuse is that I'm not a quilter.....  :P

Realale 2

I made another McCalls 8240. This is turning into a real TNT for me. I used the same fabric as the Jalie top and a remnant of quilting cotton with teddy bears on for the neck band and buttonhole placket.

This is more a wearable try out rather than the final perfection i will attain with my next one
It's Jalie Alex 3907
The fabric was only £4.99 pm and it was 190cms wide so with the zip I probably made this for a tenner.
Next time I will make the collar narrower and will add cuffs to the sleeves.

(The photo is not the best but I've been wearing this non stop since I made it and I can attest it really is warm and cosy!!)

No sewing for me, I went to the pub for some sea shanty singing. I wanted to finish my top today but hey ho (and up she rises!!  )

I sewed this morning rather than this afternoon. I put the sleeves in my top and added the cuffs. I was ready to carry on and finish it off but DH wanted to go out.

I bought these just over 2 1/2 years ago and they've been used a billion times since. Accurate (I've checked with my engineers steel ruler) and more grippy then the posh omnigrid ones I have. More durable too. There's a 6.5 x 24 inch one there in the options  :thumb:
I have the self same ones @Bill and use them a lot. They are very useful.

Hello and welcome from me too. Has anyone mentioned that we like pics?  :pics:
I can't help with fabric shops in Lancashire but in Evesham we have a quilt shop and a small fabric shop and I try to support them both. I used to live in Kidderminster and I read today that a long standing fabric shop there is closing in March. It is situated on a big public carpark so was ideal to pop into whenever I went. So sad.
I also have short arms and legs and a unique torso ( :P ) so do a lot of pattern alteration before I even begin to cut out. I have made my own blocks but now I just tend to alter patterns to fit me using my pattern drafting knowledge.
Looking forward to getting to know you.

I've cut out two tops and have started sewing one of them, so feel quite productive today  :P Details on my diary thread but it's not that interesting

Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: Pillowcases for Mom

I like the embroidery you did on the pillow @Sara-S, a lovely colour and font.
My mother was quite incensed at one point when she saw another 'inmate' wearing her (my mother's) favourite blouse despite it being clearly marked on the label. Having visited the laundry room at the place she was living I could see why it could happen.
