Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hi all
« on: December 20, 2023, 12:44:16 PM »
I think one will be enough..

Now here is your first lesson : 1 machine is never enough. Suppose it breaks down and needs to go to the hospital - it is against the law not to have at least one fully functioning machine in the house!

A mere beginner, but you are on the right lines! I had a radical sort out a few weeks ago and took it  to the remaking shop in Prades. They have made some of it into bags - and very nice they looked in the window, something I'd never have done.

I date organise and work back. Finish others stuff first. I prefer to work on one at a time. I've tried multi cutting and get in such a muddle I lose any time saved.  Very rarely change overlock thread, preferring neutrals greys or cream that go with most. Talking of which I need to change now to white from red and black  - bum.

Technical Help / Re: French seams advice please
« on: September 08, 2023, 11:18:35 AM »
I agree with @Missie  , I often (always) french seam armholes on my flamenco dresses and tops - very narrow and with a shorter stitch. Try several samples and see what suits your sewing methods best.

Ask yourself if they are worth the bother.

I love her hair colour but not so keen on it just hanging loose - love sleek updo though and I'm jealous of long hair - I can't grow mine long as it's so fine it just looks like rats. She's wearing some fab outfits - I could see myself in that fuschia cape going to the supermarket - very fetching.

In the wardrobe / Re: What are your Five Essential Handmade items?

I can't even begin to think of essential anythings!  I chop and change all the time

Me too - easily distracted by...... ooh, look - shiny things........

Yes I made the Xanthe in fuschia linen. after I'd worn it I decided it was too big so I whacked a load out the back seam from up to the mid back, still too loose so I removed a handful from the front seam too, and while at it I reduced the sleeves to cap length - there is only so much fuschia one can wear without being swamped! I love it now. I just this afternoon lent it to a pal who is going to see Barbie tomorrow.  Pintucks on the outside too.

I want that fabric @SewRuthieSews ! Its great.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Self drafted wedding dress toille

I know I keep banging on but try a horizontal dart at about the bra band level or where it gapes the most. That will change the bottom edge slightly so I'd release the side seams  before you do that. A good horizontal dart should remove the need for the vertical ones in that panel  so you'll only see the style lines on the finished toile.

Trying another picture.

Hah! gotcha!!!  This was the stage I decided not to put on the collar.
