Although if you make the shorter length dress and use 150 mm wide fabric it takes 4y which is 3.6m (and that's for the largest size which equates to a UK 22) so that doesn't sound so bad. I'm shorter than both of you so the longer one would probably be a maxi on me.  :D

Yes the cinema dress is nice but it is surprisingly fabric hungry. Have you been to Mandors yet? I'm sure they will have a sale after Christmas.

If you check through this thread you'll see what I've said about their telesales service and costs - I found them to be excellent.

Also just to note they don't open again until the new year. They are a bit out of the centre of Lancaster and I've not been able to find a bus from the centre so the options are probably a walk on a very busy road or a taxi. But if you drive it's J34 on the M6.

You might see a copy of the Sew Today mag in one of the bigger fabric shops (Mandors?) or a big WH Smith then you can see whether I've been too harsh!

The only sewing magazine where I've had a sub lately was 3 months of Knipmode which has patterns to trace like Burda. On the plus side it waa a cheap subscription, free postage, nice styles and ALL the patterns go right through the size range (unlike Burda). On the negative side I don't speak Dutch so understanding it all is a bit of hard work!

Very tasty, Ellabella and maybe your 2.8m for 2m piece was the end of a roll. I like the paisley too. I lurve paisley pattern in any form however I must not buy any more and I need to go on a fabric diet in the new year. Yes, I'm sure there's a market for this fabric but a lot will depend on the price point. I'm sure the lawn we've just been buying isn't seconds and I doubt they would make a profit at £6.99 pm in the longer term. We shall have to see how it goes.

Ah yes, Sew Today. I was once a subscriber but cancelled my sub a few years back when what they offered got poorer and the mag got poorer. And they put up my DD without telling me  Although there are some sewing articles in it, most of it is taken up by photos of the outfits in the patterns. Some of the articles were good, others less so. I even saw the exact same article in 2 different editions. I suspect it is redited on a shoestring for the UK market. Athough you get 40% off their patterns you pay postage unless the order is over £20. I prefer to wait for half price pattern sales or I buy 3 Vogues at a time in sales in the US site and that works out at about £7.50 per pattern all in and doesn't incur customs charges.
Of course, others may love Sew Today and maybe it has massively improved!

I've just bought the Love Sewing magazine now so there will be millions of us walking round in that coat. The original pattern came in two size ranges xs-m and l-xxl. For the version in the magazine I think there are separate sheets for the 2 size ranges so if I can easily separate them I might see about giving away the smaller sized pattern. I like the accompanying calendar. The magazine is OK but I probably wouldn't buy it regularly... unless there were some really covetable patterns included.  :D

Oh dear I hope I wasn't the only one as it wouldn't be a competition then! I've finished my buttonholes since the pics. I'm just glad I had the opportunity to make my top as I probably wouldn't have got it done otherwise. So my 'prize' was definitely  to get it finished. Yes Fran was looking after this one but I haven't seen here on TSP for a few days. She was really busy with helping her grandparents move so maybe that's why she hasn't been about.

What a great thread this is with a super story. Ooh I love a happy ending. And all the lovely people here giving such great advice. Have a great Christmas with your fab present, Acorn.

At £7 the postage could seem expensive but you do get it the next day which is great especially at this time of year where you could be waiting a week or more. The fabric is easily as nice as Liberty. Hope you enjoy planning how to use it.

It's a boxy style so it really depends whether you like that or whether you prefer a fit and flare look. If you have a slim waist you may wish to show it off with something fitted but if you wish to draw away attention from your middle (as many of us do  :D ) then a looser style might be better. I think the trick with this sort of style is to get a good fit on the shoulders. Also I would be wary of using too thick a fabric or the collar might be too bulky. Having said all that I like the pattern and I'd wear it.

Good for you, Ellabella. You should get your parcel tomorrow. It will keep you out of mischief over Christmas   :D

I keep picking it up and peering at it! It's deceptive. It does look charcoal-ish from a distance then when you get close up and you see the background is made up of blue and brown (Mr Tamny say it's black not brown so let's say browny-black). Quite clever really and unusual for lawn where we are more used to seeing pastel or bright flowery patterns. Hmmm. Wish I'd got some more. No, bad Tamny, mustn't buy more!

I too have a lot of Liberty but I wanted to support S&B's new venture though by the comments on their Facebook pages former Liberteenies are snapping it up. In future (if I ever use up my current supply of lawn that is) I'd go for the S&B 'made in Lancashire' offering  rather  than Liberty.

I think the back pleat is a nice feature. I don't think it would be uncomfortable to sit on unless you used a very heavy fabric in which case other bits, like the collar, would seem bulky too. Are there any reviews of this pattern on pattern review? Always a good place to check especially for patterns that have been around a while and therefore are likely to have been reviewed.
