Access All Accessories / Mask pouches
« on: December 19, 2020, 15:57:05 PM »
Decided to make some mask pouches (and a couple of masks) for us and friends this Christmas? DH product tested a few styles and sizes and liked the smaller zip type best as it's easiest to secure and shove in the pocket. The gold fabric is a single layer, the rest are lined with the outer one interfaced, and the yellow pouch has a Velcro closure.

The pouch of choice takes two pieces of fabric 8 3/4" by 6" - plus 1 3/4" x 2 1/2" for the tab - so great for FQ (or any) remnants. The zips were a dirt cheap Amazon bulk buy ages ago. It takes me 30 minutes to make, including cutting...plus the time it takes me to choose what colours to use!

Access All Accessories / Making a hat - made!
« on: November 18, 2020, 22:14:02 PM »
I saw a fetching hat on a friend last winter and tracked down a similar pattern https://www.ginareneedesigns.com/product/hat-pattern/. Finally got round to attempting it using remnants from an ancient pair of tweedy Next trousers and some left over lining fabric from my faux leather jacket.

No idea if or when I'd ever wear this - I have a few beanies for walking and several me-made sun hats - but I just fancied a go at making something with a peaked brim using extra stiff interfacing. I also have this Vogue hat pattern, but some of Gina Renee's other hat patterns look quite appealing.

I used to love wearing hats when I was a young thing so maybe I'm regressing!  -<

Your Favourite Suppliers / Good news from Minerva

Yes I know they aren't everyone's favourite online shop but wait - they've just announced that you can now buy all their fabric in 10cm increments. I'm often put off by stores that only sell by the metre so this is music to my ears. Just spreading the word.

Sewing Machines / Any way to cancel automatic locking stitch?
« on: November 05, 2020, 16:55:00 PM »
Does anyone know if there's a way to stop my Janome (DXL603) automatically doing a lock stitch at the beginning of a zigzag or decorative stitch? I'm not a fan of this - there are various reasons why I often don't want a lock stitch - and there's a button to press if I do want it. I just don't see why it's compulsory.

Googling hasn't found anything relevant so asking here since between you you know everything!

Technical Help / Pants pattern back rise much too short
« on: October 21, 2020, 18:24:14 PM »
Help please. Vogue pants dysfunction.

I'm making pants from a stash pattern Vogue 1440 . First I did a flat seat adjustment as per Anne Rowley's method which involved reducing the back crotch length by 1/2". Then on measuring the back rise it's at least 3 1/2" too short.

I've increased the front rise by 1/2", and the back rise slashed and spread from 1/2" at the side seam to 1 1/2" at the crotch - which is the maximum I thought I'd get away with. I've also added 1 1/4" to the top, tapered down to nil at the side seam (giving me 3 1/4" extra in total which should do. Is that the best way to do it or is there a better way?

What do you think?

Access All Accessories / Small purse
« on: September 21, 2020, 22:39:18 PM »
I've abandoned my usual fat purse because these days all I carry with me anywhere is bank card, driver's licence, couple of €20 notes and a few coins. I made this to fit in my pandemic bag and jeans or jacket pocket. It's a quick and easy make and very useful! Even more minimalist would be @WildAtlanticWay's small zip pouch idea but I just fancied making this https://youtu.be/69WNaaazVTo  and can't resist any excuse to add a snap fastening.... I lost concentration at one point and my intended external fabric ended up as the lining! If I made another I might use stiffer interfacing.

A simple, basic make but it uses very little fabric - just FQ remnants - and it's a free tutorial.

Access All Accessories / Pandemic bag
« on: September 13, 2020, 22:18:06 PM »
I wanted a small cross body bag to fit a mask, sanitiser, car keys, phone and mini wallet, so made this last week. It does the job and I've worn it a couple of times already. The main compartment  is a tad narrow for fishing things out but otherwise I'm pleased. The zipped pocket has a gusset - using the linlng fabric - so it fits more than you'd think. I didn't have the right size strap slider so I added a couple of snap fasteners to make it adjustable.

This is the pattern https://sewmodernbags.com/the-minimalist-cross-body-bag-sewing-pattern/.

This is the larger of the two pattern sizes So the smaller one must be very small indeed!

Access All Accessories / Storage bags
« on: September 08, 2020, 11:46:54 AM »
I've been quiet here recently, struggling like so many and not sewing much. But I feel on the up so thought I'd post about the few simple items that did get made. Small bags and pouches are my default when I can't face anything more demanding.

First up are these DIY storage bags https://www.applegreencottage.com/diy-storage-bag/. The pattern gives all the various piece sizes and is free if you sign up to the newsletter. The instructions/tutorial are online. These aren't lined but have French seams. The fabric was discovered tucked away when we cleared my parents-in-law's house. They were large cotton scarves that he may have brought back for her on his exotic work travels.

Asking for a novice quilter friend. She has pieced the front something like this

and thinks stitch in the ditch would be boring. She could do free motion but can you suggest any good alternatives? It's 70x58".

Free pattern making mini course from Gina Renee Designs. Sounds fairly basic but I'm bound to learn something useful. https://www.ginareneedesigns.com/free-pattern-making-course/

I bought a winter hat pattern from her a while back - haven't made it yet!

In the wardrobe / Choosing buttons
« on: April 27, 2020, 17:21:44 PM »
This is my not quite finished reversible padded gilet. In hindsight I think I may have chosen the wrong side to quilt and insert pockets as the peacock feather cotton  is my favourite. But the chambray is nice too.

It's not finished because the pattern had the wrong amount of bias binding (bought the day before lockdown). 2.5m is only just enough for the bodice so I've had to order more from eBay for the armholes. It's a dark navy btw.

I thought some of these buttons would work but now I can't decide which  so thought I'd ask you clever people. The navy/blue might be best for the peacock feathers anyway. The lighter buttons are wood.

The Haberdashery / Sew Essential delays
« on: April 16, 2020, 20:36:33 PM »
There's no information about an order I placed 10 days ago with Sew Essential, so I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing a similar delay. I know all the online sewing supplies are slow at the moment - and they do say on their website to be patient - so I don't want to hassle them unecessarily. It's just that I'm waiting on cord elastic for face masks for some health professional friends. I have standard narrow elastic but they find the cord more comfortable. (They don't want tie strings either).

Current Projects / Asking for a newby quilter friend
« on: April 14, 2020, 21:40:11 PM »
My friend is making her first quilt in lockdown, having recently done a beginners sewing course.

She made the quilt top with a jelly roll - it's about 5' x 4'6". She was searching in the house for fabric for a border and binding and wants to recycle a respectable old sheet and a dress that once belonged to her daughter. She will probably use another sheet for the backing. The colours will work but I'd guess all these are probably poly-cotton. I would know straight away (after decades of allergy to synthetics) but of course I'm not in a position to check the fabric.

I've made only one quilt and used all 100% cotton including batting, so do you experts see any pitfalls? I will suggest that she washes the jelly roll top to shrink it before adding the sheets and dress which have presumably been washed many times before. Anything else? Would you be happy with this?

Thanks Darksiders.

I don't wear dresses but decided to make one anyway for a family wedding in York In ten days time
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
It's McCalls 6886 which I've made variations of a few times and is dead quick and easy. Its a 12 top half then a 10 from armpits down. Looking at this picture, next time I'll make a straight 10 and just  lower the armscye a bit. But this one will do.

The fabric is very busy so right out of my comfort zone but hey it's a wedding. And I will make a smart top out of it afterwards.

The neckline, hem and sleeves are just tacked so those are what I'd like your views on please.

Does the hem look about the right length? I'd have to wear it with tights this time of year and I'll look for a slightly smarter pair of bunion-comfortable shoes (not heels though).

Ditto the sleeves? I know 3/4 looks nice but they always feel odd on me. And it's March!

What about the neckline? Thats my main quandary. It could go lower but should I? At the moment it's the higher one turned over twice (5/8" as intended). If I went lower I'd do a band or binding.

This is one with the lower neckline which I'd raise a bit.

Thanks folks.
