I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / Paypal Returns
« on: September 21, 2019, 20:27:34 PM »
https://www.paypal.com/ie/webapps/mpp/refunded-returns

Maybe everyone knew about this except me. If you pay with Paypal and want to return something you can claim a refund of your return postage (need to upload various proofs) up to 12 times a year.

I had to return some boots to Cotton Traders as they were too small. Bearing in mind that they're in the UK and I'm not I'm pleased to say they they refunded in full including the original postage and told me to claim the return postage via Paypal (who paid up quickly).

Not exactly sewing related but could be useful, and news to me!

Sewing Machines / Do I really need a back up sewing machine?
« on: September 15, 2019, 11:41:09 AM »
Lidl sewing machine €99 is in store next Thursday and I'm tempted. I still have the 25 year old Singer that I replaced with a Janome 5 years ago but I never get it out because it's so basic in comparison - 4 stitches, 4 step buttonhole. However it worked fine last time I used it.

So that got me thinking - do I need a back up machine at all? After all if my Janome broke down, I could get it fixed pretty quickly, and it's very rare that a sewing project of mine has a deadline. The Lidl sounds like a bargain and I've already recommended it to someone who wanted a cheap machine for basic alterations, but would it actually be useful?

If you're a hobbyist sewer like me what exactly do you use your back up machine(s) for? Am I missing a trick here?

Technical Help / Best way to adjust for too tight armscye
« on: July 07, 2019, 10:55:30 AM »
This is a recurring problem for me with wovens so I'd really love to have a patent method to solve it quickly each time. My clothes have to be comfortable so if the armhole of a top is even a bit tight I simply don't wear it and eventually it goes to the kitten shop (local SPCA).

At the moment I kind of wing it, sewing a narrower seam or widening or lowering the armhole - and sleeve - on the pattern, or sizing up as the mood takes me. It often works but my methods are rather random.

What's the best method to use? Is there a good tutorial out there?

Thanks a mil
V

Technical Help / Too small sleeve and armhole
« on: July 02, 2019, 15:29:26 PM »
I am making the Angela Wolf Linda tunic which promised to be a simple job. With wovens I usually make a muslin first and so found the armhole to be too tight. When I measured the pattern, the armscye was about 1" shorter and the sleeve head  1 1/2" shorter than my other tunics. That's a lot. The rest of the tunic is a good fit.

How would you deal with this? I've added about 1/2" to the height of the sleeve cap, and both lowered and widened the  bottom of sleeve cap. This gives me almost the extra I need but I'm concerned it will make the bust area too loose. Obviously I'd have to repeat the lowering and widening bit on the bottom of the front and back armscye.

Is there a better way than this? I found a couple of tutorials but they only add a much smaller amount. And I'd need to size up considerably to get the armhole room I need.

In the wardrobe / Monarch jacket
« on: July 01, 2019, 18:08:44 PM »
This is the Indiesew Monarch Jacket, one of my favourite recent makes - and definitely one I can see myself wearing a lot outside of midsummer. I posted about the pattern here when it came out in April and I felt you weren't fans of the style so lets see if I've won anyone round...It's meant to be a boxy cardi/bomber jacket cross.

I made a straight size 4, just added 1" to the length and 5 snaps instead of 3 (good suggestion from @BrendaP). The fabric is a ribbed cotton/lycra jersey from dressfabrics.ie which was lovely to sew with - a less stable knit than recommended but I think it works. I bought the same in petrol and am considering making another. The jeans are my stretch denim Elle/Eleanore pant cross with a back yoke and useful back pockets - worn continuously since completion last month!

Patterns Discussion / New Indiesew jacket pattern
« on: April 09, 2019, 11:24:38 AM »
It's this, the Monarch jacket which looks like a cross between a bomber jacket and a cardi. There's 15% off if you subscribe to the Indiesew newsletter. This one's right up my street - a quick, easy make that looks super-comfortable and versatile. When I recover from my upcoming second cataract op and my elbow wire removal surgery I'm definitely making a couple of these!

Technical Help / Help! Fabric marker disaster.
« on: October 01, 2018, 20:24:28 PM »
I used a blue erasable gel pen (similar to Frixion) down the front of my new jacket. I've used this dozens of times on cotton and it's always disappeared with a warm iron. This time it's left a very visible pale line right down the maroon front next to the zip. I've tried wetting it but once it dried the mark is still there.

I'm horrified - it's taken me ages to make this jacket and now look what I've done.

Any ideas on how I can remove this? The fabric is a cotton polyester sweatshirt fleece. I'll post a picture in a minute.

Technical Help / Add a fastening to this cardigan
« on: September 18, 2018, 15:58:20 PM »
A while back I made McCalls 7254 - a cardigan with shawl collar - using a nice looking cosy sweater knit. The collar is a double piece of fabric that continues around the hem. But I don't wear it. You can see on the pattern picture that the model is holding the front together, but if you don't hold it it gapes open and the back swings out unattractively. It's at least a size to large which doesn't help the gape, though I've already taken in all the seams, but it would be fine with about a 2" overlap at the front held by a fastening of some kind.

I think a button would look best. However, I followed advice on PatternReview and didn't interface the collar (which the pattern says to do). That does give it a nice drape but I think that means a button/buttonhole can't be safely added.

I could remove the collar and interface it but then of course I'd lose the drape. Could I just put a small piece of interfacing where the button would go? On either the outside or inside of the collar? Or is there another means of securing a button fastening?

Appreciate any feedback as always  :)

Technical Help / Jeans waistband size vs waist
« on: September 15, 2018, 07:21:50 AM »
This post was very confusing - even to me - so I've condensed it.

I'm hacking my altered-to-fit Style Arc Elle pant pattern to a more jeans-like version with yoke, pockets etc.

My fabric for this is heavier weight and less stretchy than my previous versions of the Elle so to be on the safe side I want to increase the length of the waistband which will have elastic inserted. I presume I'll also need to add a small amount to the sides of the front and back pattern pieces at the waist.

So I was wondering - is there some rule about waistband vs pants waist measurements? Or does the elastication mean that it's OK as long as the waistband isn't longer than the waist?

What do you think?

Patterns Discussion / New jacket trend
« on: September 12, 2018, 10:00:27 AM »
Apparently (first I've heard, but no surprise there) the oversize jacket is back - like this one - very 90's and, bearing in mind that Lori would look good in a dishcloth, I thoroughly approve of the trend! Although I'm definitely not buying any patterns for the forseeable future, this one can go on my long list  ><. Hopefully it will still be in fashion and available by the time I've made a few dozen more of the unused patterns I already own  :|.

House Beautiful / I turned a sheet into a sheet
« on: September 08, 2018, 12:56:11 PM »
Not terribly exciting I know but king-size 100% cotton fitted sheets cost a fortune round here and I wouldn't mind but however carefully you wash and dry them they shrink. So you end up with oversize double fitted sheets which you don't need - they make expensive muslin fabric!

So I took an old double flat cotton sheet that's already been washed a few dozen times and turned it into a king-size fitted sheet - lots of online advice for this. The sewing bit was easy, it was all the measuring and threading elastic that took time. I'll spare you the photo - you all know what a fitted sheet looks like  :)

Only problem is I realised after that this was the sheet we take with us on holiday for use with double beds :[. Ah well, I suppose it's cheaper to buy a new flat sheet  :\.

Fun with Fabric / Getting rid of that "charity shop smell"
« on: August 19, 2018, 11:38:13 AM »
I sometimes find interesting fabric in car boot sales or charity shops but it always has that smell - you know the one that doesn't go away when they're washed and line dried. It's impossible to define - not stinky or offensive, just not very nice. DH says he doesn't notice it but I certainly do. It does seem to diminish with time but I'd rather not wait!

I've tried adding vinegar + sodium bicarb to the fabric conditioner drawer of the machine but that did nothing. I'd rather not handwash them (with vinegar) - that's a chore too far. And there isn't a wardrobe in the house where I could hang them for a week or two with a saucer of bicarb. Has anyone here had any success with this? If so please share.
