Vintage Machines / <3 for Singer K95/96
« on: June 19, 2017, 17:39:35 PM »
I just love these strange almost Home model industrial machines. They live in a cabinet like a fridge look sturdy but all the dimensions are lightly off, and have an engine the size of a keg! but for some reason i love their style... wish i had somewhere to put one... I almost bought one the other day, and the Mrs nearly let me get away with it... but i mentioned the cabinet...

anyway:

If you have one or feel the love feel free to comment with your thoughts!

Vintage Machines / Bernina 900 Nova
« on: June 11, 2017, 00:38:21 AM »
Hi All,

been a lot going on lately and my sewing time (Forum chatting time and purchasing) has suffered...

I've been trying to get my Bernina 900 going but its acting up, when you hand turn without fabric it its smooth as glass and there no sound of anything catching or clipping. When you hand turn it with fabric it'll do 4-5 stitches then it starts to stiffen and wont penetrate the fabric, check the fabric and the stitch balance is OK, for the first few stitches then birds nests on the back, I havent really encountered this combination, and it doesnt feel or sound like a timing issue.

Any Ideas?

Thank you!

Vintage Machines / Kids and theTavaro Elna (1940s grasshopper)
« on: March 20, 2017, 14:08:19 PM »
Hi all,

A while back I got a Tavaro Elna and it's a really early one, they're super cute but the paint was falling off it in places and really rough in others, so I ended up cleaning it back to the aluminium in areas to make it useable.

https://db.tt/4DRkMCoa

The belt on it is a bit loose but it goes and is a lovely little machine.

My 5yo son has been asking to learn to sew for a while but I hadn't quite found a route in for him... but then  8) (no lightbulb) I thought we'd try the Elna.

It's very ideal for a little person, it's small, has a knee controller so he can sit at a table on a higher chair and reach it, even the slippy belt, as it slips at higher speeds, so prevented racing... It also made him be gentle with the controller. He could reach the balance wheel, the reverse switch and the presser foot lever.

He decided to make a little pouch for his sister for when she loses her teeth :) he was really pleased with it and so was she!

It's a bit wonky, and one of the seams is beautifully curved and it's all bit unfinished... but he did great :)

Courses & Classes / Favourite Craftsy Courses/tutors?
« on: March 10, 2017, 11:56:49 AM »
Hi!
I was wondering what are your favourite craftsy courses or your favourite tutors?

If hope this will give people a place to start when considering a new course or looking for something new. I'm also not much of user myself and find the lists of courses a bit overwhelming.

Thank you,

Vintage Machines / The unexpected Bernina Nova
« on: March 04, 2017, 18:32:20 PM »
I did a throw away bid on a Bernina on ebay almost forgot about it and won it!

It's a Nova which I think is a 900, paint and body and case look in decent nick but no manual and not many accessories.

Guess we'll see what turns up!

Beginners Sewing course

Last year I was getting into sewing (and vintage machines) and wanted to learn more about sewing, and stumbled on Janet's website and contacted her to see if she would be happy to run a 'getting to know your Sewing Machine' day for me and the Singer 500a, I was kind of expecting a 'you what? What the heck is that?' to the 500a (they're worse than hen's teeth in the UK!) she just asked if I could bring the manual!

The day was brilliant! The 500 breezed through most tasks in a sturdy stylish kind of way, and she put us through our paces providing print outs and samples and getting me started on a sampler.

We covered a wide range of skills and stitches, buttonholes, different stitches, blind stitching, quilting, zips, sewing in a straight line. I came away with a small purse, and a little cushion, and so many tips and tricks.

She's an excellent teacher and so knowledgeable, she's also fantastic with overlockers and has several books and downloadable courses on her website for overlockers. I opted for a beginners course and she tailored it to my needs, but her impressive resume suggests she could challenge and inform all but the most advanced sewists.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her, so if you're out in this neck of the woods because you live here or are on holiday, do look her up! Personally I can't wait to organise my next session!

Hi, I'm new... / Hi!
« on: March 01, 2017, 11:13:29 AM »
Hi All,

I'm Roger, I'm based in Norfolk UK. I'm learning sewing and overlocking currently. But I do love my vintage machines an have developed a bit of a collection.

I have a beautiful 500a in a table,
a very shiny Pfaff 30 (wouldn't look out of place with Darth Vader!
My grandmothers Elna Lotus SP,
A 401 that skips every 5th stitch (annoying!)
A very early elna grasshopper that the paint was flaking off of. It's sooo cute!
A F+R 504 (reminds me of ice cream)
A bernina 530-2 which is in surprisingly good condition.
And a Cresta 132-T which currently breaks needles! I think there might be something up with the timing (understatement!)
And a 201k2 that's at a middling in a restoration project but does now stitch nicely :)

I look forward to chatting around the board :)
