Hello again my Dear ..... ..... Let me walk you through this .....

http://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,1574.0.html

Don't take any notice of the quilting I did on this, I got carried away with myself ...Two lines crossing the diagonals of the squares would look super.

Cheap ideas for wadding include cheap fleece throes from Ikea (about £4 a pop or other bargain basement emporia ... Primani ? Matalan ?? The Range ???

Workshops, as Wrenkie says, are an excellent place to start ...Hansons in Sturminster Newton do excellent ones as everything (generally) is included so you can try before you buy if you will ... they also have do a fantastic lunch!!

Or a visit to the Dark Sides Devils Den in Blandford for a play might stand you in good stead too

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: Inspiration Needed

Yes I think it is, as you cut the charm pack  to make strips ....

Two 2 1/2" squares
One 5 x 1" strip
Two 1 1/2" squares
Add four 2 1/2" squares of your background fabric and you're ready to sew...

And the September BOM is (and very easy) with the addition of a  small amount of background fabric.

I dont use jelly rolls, charm packs or layer cakes either .... until I did a sneaky secret workshop last November!

I needed a charm pack or layer cake for the pattern and chose the less expensive option. It was just an exercise for me and a fun day but I was very pleased with the results .......

Which of course became  March's BOM .... so you have the pattern right there!

It is finished and back on my chair and my combobulation is at ease once more .....

I ended up with much more quilting than before, as you would expect four years of quilting on, and some very weird shapes coming out from underneath the needle in the borders ....

I really have no idea what these are meant to be, but they were pretty uniform in size, simple to quilt and filled a lot of negative space! Any ideas what they are ????

The back however (Dont look Ethel!) is not so good.

After I had layered it I turned it over and there right across the middle of the back was a dirty great ruckle!! I ripped the back off and smoothed it back down as best I could but by then all hopes of matching the front and back borders was over and I had to hope for the best.

I dived into the quilting, forbidding myself to turn it over and check on how the front and back were aligned. Only at the very end did I look!

It was not as bad as I feared, but one of the back borders widens to an inch in the middle from 1/2" at the sides whereas the widest border is a pretty regular 1 3/4" all along. I knew I was going to be on a sticky wicket with the borders from before Rucklegate but at least the front borders are a pretty consistent 1 1/4" all around.

Its not square and the piecing still aint pretty but I love it and its back where it belongs!

Marvellous Ruby, marvellous ... Could there be hope for me ???

(considers carefully)  ... Nah!!!

Thank you for that reasoned explanation of why you chose that great pattern Rubes, its always interesting to know why people choose certain designs and the results.

I quilted several overlapping spirals on the Ironing board cover and tho you think every wobble away from the width of the walking foot will show, it really doesn't: ... As always the whole captivates the eye rather than the wobble!

Doing one humungous spiral goes above and beyond in my opiniion and Im glad you stuck with it and turned out such a gorgeous quilt..... No wonder Mr Rubes is possesive of it!

Is this a Free or For Sale post El ???

Can you include in your heading please ?

Acorn, how dd you get the variegated effect in the designs ...  it looks like a very slow change variegated thread has been used!
Did you have to stop and re-thread each time at various points of the pattern or ??
