Access All Accessories / Not so leather washbag
« on: February 08, 2022, 16:54:15 PM »
As per our @Bodgeitandscarper I have now acquired the same pattern. Mines being done at the listed size from scraps for various reasons. Being p*** poor being the main reason  :P so it won't be as pleasant to look at as bodgies.
I believe I've completed the top pocket correctly although it's doubtful as I struggled to understand the instructions. Why would there be 2 separate panels for the bottom part of said pocket?  :S The mindeth boggleth.
I've probably done as much unpicking as bodgie through cockups uncertainty.
Please excuse the mess. Its normal here  :D

Vintage Machines / 1936 (I think) Singer 99k worth it?
« on: January 20, 2022, 09:12:31 AM »
Hello folks.
If (and it's a big if) I can persuade my mum to lend me the money, is this something that can be recommended? Missing bobbin plate and I've no idea what that bandage is for (I'll ask the seller)
I've wanted a vintage for ages and I've taken a fancy to this one.

Technical Help / Batting/wadding
« on: December 27, 2021, 13:40:14 PM »
Is it the same as insulated batting/wadding?
I'm aiming to make some matching oven gloves to go with mum's apron so she doesn't burn her pinkies off.
Fankoo.

Current Projects / Dresden Plate.....
« on: November 30, 2021, 13:29:44 PM »
That's what I'm doing today.
My current project is an apron for my dear old mum. I'm sticking a dresden plate on the front pocket and each blade has our names, the kids and the dogs names embroidered on. The embroidering I did last night. Stuck the fabric pieces in the washer to get rid of the stabilizer and then the dryer and then tried to ironsorry, PRESS them flat. The bits around the embroidery are still a wee bit wrinkly and I dunno how to sort that.
I'm now currently cutting out each of the 20 blades using a card template. Fun!  :headbang:

House Beautiful / Tablecloth.
« on: October 29, 2021, 14:25:18 PM »
Are they as simple to make as I think?
Basically just a big sheet with hemmed edges?
The table is rectangular in shape but the ends are rounded off, like half circles. Basically a huge drop leaf table.
I made a tarpaulin template of the tables size and shape and my plan is to add an extra foot or so for the drape and then use a rolled hem foot to finish the edge. Yes? No? What the hell were you thinking?

Embroidery and Embellishment / What have I been up to today?
« on: October 29, 2021, 00:33:26 AM »
Well, the new toy arrived this morning. It's noisy. Doubt I'll be running it too late but it is veeeeeeeery smooth.
1st attempt at embroidery was this.....

Being a bit more daring I went in search of free designs on't tinterweb and found not too many.
This fella caught my eye along with a few dinosaurs and stuff. I added the croc lettering.

Turned out quite well mefinks.
I've also been playing around with some android app called "Touch Embroidery free" which digitizes stuff sort of. Having a few hiccups with that.
I'm also planning on having a crack at using something called "SophieSew" which looks interesting if not incredibly difficult.
Anyhoo, it's late, I'm tired and I'm off to bed. Nighty night.

Embroidery Machines / Another new toy!
« on: October 26, 2021, 23:19:36 PM »
But I won't have it for a while. Meh!
I've bought a Brother Innov-is F440e embroidery machine. Then I got an email from the shop saying they were out of stock and were expecting some in 10 days. Aaarrggghhh! I hate waiting.

I have a stupid idea to make and sell dinky little draw string bags to make a few pennies.
Not as easy to make as I thought, almost resulting in me killing my sewing machine with a thread ripper this morning  :\
However, after mucho swearing and cursing it, I achieved success!
I even timed myself to see how quick I could make them. 3 per hour. Yup. No danger of any speed records being broken here
Anyhoo, here they are.

Access All Accessories / How do I sew a 3D curve?
« on: August 25, 2021, 14:11:21 PM »
3D? I can't think of a better or proper explanation. Anyhoo...
Here is my problem. I think I've pinned it right, but how do I sew it? Pretty please with loads of sugar on top.

Sewing Machines / Brother Innov-is 1800Q
« on: August 13, 2021, 09:12:21 AM »
Hopefully arriving today!
It's an ex demo but the seller says it has all the bits and bobs included and a one year guarantee. I'm £999 further in debt but I hope it's worth it.
Why? Well there's nothing wrong with the A150 but it does lack lower case lettering which really pigged me off when I did the cafe seat covers and table cloths. I also struggled doing my mums quilt due to a lack of throat space...but that's probably more user error as the rest of you seem to cope with non long arm machines. I'm perfectly happy to admit that when this new toy arrives I'll have all the gear and no idea. But at least it hasn't turned out to be a covid distraction. I actually love sewing! Who knew?  :faints:

Awaiting comments from @Lowena as I know she has one too :)

Sewing Machines / How to price a machine
« on: August 12, 2021, 13:29:33 PM »
How do you do it?
I've a new machine turning up tomorrow if I'm lucky and so I need to rid my self of a few. The A150 certainly as it's selling price goes towards paying off the new one.
Ebay advice says this model goes for £200 ish 2nd hand. But it's only a few months old and in near brand new condition...plus the extension table and a walking foot included. That's near £550 new! And I sposed to be happy with 200 squid? Pah!
Any help here please!

Current Projects / Yet another project!
« on: July 13, 2021, 11:18:52 AM »
I've spent ages looking for small pannier bags for my bike that don't cost an arm & a leg and aren't fugly. No success.
Sew, since I'm now a tailor wannabe with mediocre skills I figured I'd have a go at making my own.
This isn't the final version by any means, just a test run to test my stitch strength and neatness and figure out any problems for when I start the real thing.
I'm quite pleased with myself!  :D
Straps and buckles to be figured out and what to use as a stiffening board which will have the pannier rack clips screwed to.

Current Projects / I was bored...
« on: July 12, 2021, 02:41:12 AM »
so I made this...
My youngest daughter's favourite words seem to be "literally" and "Innit". Both make me cringe. But, I thought I'd wind her up. She wants a new pencil case for when the new school year starts.

Current Projects / Cafe seat cushion
« on: June 25, 2021, 12:33:05 PM »
The story.
My fiancée and I have good friends who run a nice little cafe. Having seen a quilt that I made for my mum they asked if I could do some cushions to cover the seats of their outside chairs. A few customers saying they were too hard etc.
I suggested embroidering the cafes name onto them to make them a bit more personalized which they loved. The cafe thrives off of word getting around as it's just so relaxed and friendly and I figured the cushions should reflect that. Fabric and colours picked and I set to working on the first one yesterday. I'll take it over on Sat to see if it fits OK and then get to doing the rest. 8 in total!
They're only meant to take the edge off the seats so thin 2oz wadding was used to pad out polyester/nylon mix canvas. Wipe clean being the order of the day
First one finished last night.  :D
