@Lilian your little mini is so charming! and such a good use of what might have been seen as "waste." I like that you pressed the seams open, if I ever do something tiny like this again I will try that. mine was lumpy bumpy from overlapping seams.

@Iminei ah I didn't really take any more pics! I don't know what I'll do with it either. Maybe just hang it up?

Redrafted comment for entry submission: (sorry to everyone seeing this twice!)

Username and number: Whofilets , entry #1

What is it and for whom (if applicable): May Mini Marvel Quilt, for me

Pattern used (commercial or self-drafted, anything goes): self-drafted, used Quilters Grid interfacing. finished at 9.75 inches x 7.75 inches at its widest point

Fabrics used: scraps and offcuts, including fabrics upcycled from old clothing and old machine-made bias binding. Also part of one jelly roll strip cut in half. I did a little hand quilting around the edge and through the middle, though it didn’t need it.

A short description on how you made it, any problems overcome etc: This is my first ever, start-to-finish, top pieced and batting and quilted and binding put on, QUILT!

Thanks @Iminei ! I was looking for the entry rules but I couldn't remember where to hunt them down.

 :toast:
May Mini Marvel, complete!

It finished at 9.75 inches x 7.75 inches at its widest point. Much like a full size quilt made by me will probably be, it was a little wonky and uneven.
Both the light mint green and the navy binding were premade bias binding from my ancient stash of bindings and trims (I bought a small lot on eBay back in like 2012 and they look like they're mostly from the 60s-80s). The bias binding was a little hard to keep straight and only one corner successfully mitered front and back- it's so small you can't notice.

I was going for a blue and green diagonal, postage stamp quilt- ALMOST every square is from a different fabric. I love the tiny blocks taken out of context. Like the blue square at the top that looks like a white J- it's the bottom of an umbrella. Or a sparkly green bit- how would you know it's the green vest on a bulldog, from fabric with "dogs dressed in green for St Patrick's Day"?

here's a fun artsy shot taken on a bush near a carpark in Ely:

wow @LeilaMay that is a stunner! thanks for sharing!

@Catllar you would notice if I used cheater quilt fabric bc my "seams" would finally be even

@BrendaP Hmmm! I like it, because we would probably all have different reds and yellows and blues and batiks, but I understand where you're hesitant. It might look a bit different all cut up. Do you have enough for some sashing (or even just cornerstones) to bring all the blocks together?

I should have shopped my stash, but I don't have a lot cuts over one meter that I wanted to use for this. and I went a little wild and bought two different possibilities online- we'll see how they look and feel when they arrive! I have a third contender in my cart for my local fabric shop. aaaaaannnnnnd I looked at some fabric to ship to me from the US but I'm not certain it'll arrive in time.

So I collect Tula Pink fabric and this is an Out Of Print design I haven't yet got - I am over the moon and have been stroking it all afternoon. Thank you so much !

I scored a fat quarter of this last year and it didn't have the selvedge- now I know it's Eden by Tula Pink! That explains it  :loveit: it really is gorgeous fabric in person. I don't know if I'll ever even cut it up, it might live on as a "souvenir fat quarter". If it's a decoration, it's not stash, right? ;)

Okay @RJR_38 I hope this doesn't feel like I'm stepping on your toes but I want to make sure I have this clear, and sometimes I need things explained two ways!

This is what the Boom will look like on my end:
1. I sign up here (done!) by May 22
2. I get the names of the other Boom participants (let's say there will be 10)
3. I shop for 1.25 metres of fabric, cut it into fat eights (keeping the extra for myself) and label each with my name and any requests I have. Ziploc or alternative
4. I send you the labeled fat eighths in time for you to receive by Wednesday June 9th, plus either pre-stamped envelopes with my address OR £3
5. I will get 10 fat eights of everyone else's fabric (or I will get 9? because you @RJR_38 will also make a block) and I will make one (at least one) 12.5 inch square block per fabric. I will stick this completed block into the baggie labeled with the originator. If I want to send the extra fabric from the fat eighth back, I can, or I can keep it.
6. I will mail you back all my completed blocks, plus another £3, in time for you to receive by August 11.
7. By the end of August I will receive 10 blocks back of MY fabric made by everyone else!

I forgot that I had taken progress pics! I don't have a shot of the fabrics I picked or laid out bc I really was sorting through weird bags of scraps and strings and cutting as I went. I "cheated" and tried out that fusible Quilters Grid - I got a little remnant of it, very appropriate for a mini quilt challenge.

You can see the little squares have bits of a paper airplane, a decades old bit from a Tommy Hilfiger shirt, a "fair isle knitting" piece of a blue ornament, but the whole fabric was mostly white- and the edge of the framing, which was a single strip of a jelly roll cut down the center.

I went by the 1 inch squares of the Quilter's Grid and the patchwork is finishing at 1/2 inch. All quite fun! And I don't feel bad about cheating with pre-marked fusible grid. I still use tracing and scissors, like I did before I got a rotary cutter. and we're not all piecing by hand or stuffing our quilts with raw cotton and old cloth for batting  :D

I'm in!!!

1. Would you take venmo or paypal for the £6 of postage both ways? you can say no!
2. I've literally never sent anything within the UK before other than the pre-stamped envelopes to a government department. How exciting that my first mail I'm sending will be for quilting! I'm sure I can just pop to the local post office branch and they'll sort me out, but is there like.. anything tricky I should know?
3. I'm SO EXCITED TO PICK OUT MY FABRIC Y'ALL

I was making pretty good progress on my piece, and was following a nice tutorial- but you all know how there is a difference between "reading" and "understanding"? First I thought I needed 10 fabric strips and two small blocks. Nope, I need 10 different fabrics that make 8 strips and 2 sets of blocks. Okay, not a problem, I wasn't really liking two of them anyways.
Finish the block thinking this is going to be a close twelve inches, only to realize I need FOUR of those sets of 8 strips. Ooooooh okay okay okay!  I do not blame the tutorial I was following, it was clear.

That project is going into time out for a minute while I work on a different, more miniature mini.

A Good Yarn / Re: Alternative to mitred square blanket
« on: May 10, 2021, 10:30:53 AM »
I am making a scrappy Ten Stitch Square blanket which is a free pattern. I have seen some gorgeous organized looking blankets that use alternating scrap/color round with rounds of a solid, like white. You start in the center and work out, and instead of working out to the very edge of the blanket you could make several of these in a smaller size like a block to get that "repeating quilt block" look. That designer has some great variations on miters and the ten stitch blanket idea.

A Good Yarn / Re: Knitting For The Dolls
« on: May 10, 2021, 10:24:28 AM »

One of the things with American Girl dolls is that some have slightly prominent teeth. I favor the ones with no teeth showing. I only have the two AG dolls as my favorite are the Gotz Happy Kidz dolls. I have 4 of them.

Maybe you know this already but the American Girl doll Kaya isn't showing her front teeth- she is from the Nez Perce (Nimipuu) tribe and their cultural advisors informed AG that showing her teeth like that would have been seen as a sign of aggression. I think she is a beautiful doll with a subtle, calm face. Apparently the Logan doll, the boy, uses the same closed-mouth face mold.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: A Boom

@RJR_38 I agree- having the same size throughout will be less confusing too, won't have to keep track of which fat eights need which size.
