In the wardrobe / Very odd zip
« on: December 16, 2022, 16:50:40 PM »
My long open ended zip finally turned up today - but it's a bit odd.  The top end, instead of having metal "stops" on each side has what appears to be melted lumps of transparent plastic over the last few teeth, which is also a bit rough in a couple of places.  This also means that the zip doesn't sit flat when fully closed, so it's a bit rubbish.
Fortunately, I need to shorten it by about an inch or so anyway, and have a little kit of metal stops I can put on, so it doesn't actually matter.
Anyone else come across any like this?

Tech Know How / Error loading pic
« on: November 12, 2022, 10:09:02 AM »
@Mr Twingo I've been trying to post a pic, but I keep getting the message - An Error Has Occurred!
Your attachment has failed security checks and cannot be uploaded. Please consult the forum administrator.

It's only a pic of some fabric, honest!  And it's been reduced to 81.7kb so not too big.

The Haberdashery / Tell me about duckbill scissors

I keep wondering if I need some for trimming off fabric/leather/vinyl when machine embroidering.

I can't really understand what they do, so I've just looked at two youtube thingies, and in one they have the big blade over the fabric that's being kept, and in the other they have the big blade over the fabric that's being cut off.  Confused?  Very!!

I've looked at them and I think from the pics, there are some that have the big blade bent up 90°  and some are flat - is that right?  And why??

I've been searching for a machine that will sew leather bags (soft garment? leather) as even the old Husqvarna Viking was struggling the other day, the motor didn't seem to have enough "welly" sometimes and I had to turn the handwheel to start the needle off into the leather.
I've spent an hour or two this afternoon veering from one idea to another - then I had a sudden thought.  I remembered that a good few years ago (probably back in the eighties!) I bought my Elna 3003 because it would sew through loads of layers of denim.
I kept adding layers of leather, including a couple of layers as a kinda strap attachment, and got to a total of six layers, four plus the two of the strap bit, and it didn't skip a beat, not even when sewing over the humpy bit  :o :o

I think I can stop looking for another machine now.

Technical Help / Help with neck edge please
« on: May 22, 2022, 12:34:37 PM »
Any ideas on how to finish the neck on this mesh top please?
The bias binding isn't working however I fold it.  Have I done it wrong?

I thought it was about time I tried to get to grips with these attachments, I've only had them about 4 or 5 years.

I tried the single fold one, not very successfully, then I wondered if I should be using the double fold as it's jersey fabric.  I have realised that you don't need to cut the binding on the bias, just across the stretch.

Using the double fold binder, I found I need to stretch the main fabric a little as it goes into the binding, is this right?  Otherwise the binding is too tight and puckers/pulls in the main fabric.  It's hard to know how much to stretch it though, I did it too much really.

Does anyone else use them?  Any tips please?

Vintage Machines / Husqvarna Viking 19e Special Edition
« on: March 01, 2022, 19:49:50 PM »
That's a nice snappy name isn't it?
It arrived this morning, it's very beautiful  :loveit:  Apparently the 19e was first made in 1938, but I don't know how old this particular one is.  This is the Special Edition as it has a knob at the back to change from normal zig-zag to three-step or blind hem stitch.

I sat down to try it, and soon found some snags.  The stitch length knob was really stiff to turn, and the reverse button didn't seem to work.  When I tried to stitch, the fabric didn't move.  Oh dear!

After a bit of thought, I worked out that the stitch length knob and reverse knob must both be stuck with hardened old grease, so a bit of googling found how/where to access the mechanism.  It took a long time (most of the afternoon) with the isopropanol (rubbing alcohol), cotton buds, and sewing machine oil, and then pliers, to free off the stitch length, but the reverse button was still stuck in.  A bit more research showed the precise bits to wiggle and push, and now it's free.

I've even sewed the bias binding round the insides of the brown leather wash bag that never got hand sewn.  The design  of the machine is just perfect for awkward items, as there isn't much machine to the left of the needle, both above it and beside it.  Also it just glides over multiple layers of denim without missing a beat, it's fab.  Even has a really nifty knob that makes it just go slowly if you need it to.

It's just what I needed

Vintage Machines / Where to sell an unusual toy machine
« on: February 28, 2022, 13:59:34 PM »
I've finally identified one of my toy sewing machines as a Muller 25.  There are hardly any references to this machine anywhere I can find on t'interweb, so I'm presuming/hoping it may be worth a reasonable amount - but the question is where do I sell it?  Any ideas anyone?

I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / French terry
« on: February 22, 2022, 08:59:33 AM »
My Fabrics currently have 30% off their french terry - but it's still £8.10 a metre.  I suppose that's not bad these days though.

Access All Accessories / Leather wash bag
« on: February 05, 2022, 10:38:13 AM »
My next daft idea is to try to copy my favourite wash/toiletries bag in some of my lovely new leather.  I have some lining material on order, and some mesh for pocketses.  Everything needs pocketses  :)

I can't decide whether to buy this pattern or save £9 and try to copy mine.  That pattern would need altering too as I'd want it taller and possibly narrower and probably different pockets, but it will help me with the actual construction.

I think I may buy the pattern...

In the wardrobe / Because you all need a laugh...

I finally got a new swimsuit that fits, but the cups were made for someone at least twice my size  :( so in my infinite wisdom I decided it couldn't be that hard to replace them with the cups from an old swimsuit.
It worked, but I had to hand sew a little bit, and the rest is a right mess - but looks fine from the outside and it fits.

And yes, it does have bright pink hearts and skulls on it - even if you've not got it, you can still flaunt it.

Sewing Machines / Leather sewing machine
« on: January 29, 2022, 18:08:24 PM »
I finally got around to cleaning the excess grease off this beastie, and trying it out.  It stitches through the very very thick tough bit of vinyl(?) that came with out with no effort at all, brilliant.

However, it's not exactly what I want, as it won't take thin normal sewing thread I don't think as it's really hard to pull any thread through, so I think the normal stuff would break.  It does sew well with the thick thread they supplied though.

Hmm, should I keep it, or should I sell it?

Sewing Machines / Free arm machine help please
« on: January 19, 2022, 11:31:09 AM »
I may be wanting the impossible, but here goes anyway  0_0

I'm wondering if there is a machine (at a sensible price if possible) that is a free arm with hardly any "arm" to the left of the needle if you see what I mean.  I think it would be really useful for sewing bags etc.

I did spot an old Singer 320k (which looks gorgeous too) but it's still got about an inch and a half of arm on the left, and ones I've seen are around £500, so probably too much for something that will only be used occasionally.

I've also seen industrial types, but I can't spend that sort of money!

Anyone got any ideas please?  Or am I asking the impossible?

I have loads, this is just an overview of some of them.  I will be putting them on that well known auction site a few at a time, but if you spot anything you fancy, I can show more pics - and make me an offer!
