Thank you on and all. Finally took the plunge this morning and bought a pack that contains a right angle, ruler, french curve and a couple of other curves. It's a cheap set, but I figure I'll see what I use the most and get a better quality later. I also bought the book that @Efemera suggested. I think that will propbably be more helpful than most of the curves. Thanks again for your insights!

Thanks guys, really helpful feedback. I love the fact that the first post suggests I get both and the second post suggests neither! This sums up dressmaking in a nutshell for me as a novice! I think it's my mathematical background where something is either right or wrong, but in dressmaking there's not always a 'right' answer, drives me bonkers!

Still, we learn from the mistakes right? The video is very helpful and clearly explains the benefits of using a curve. I think I'm just going to have to start experimenting. Anyone have any other resources for making your own patterns or adjusting existing patterns? There's so much I don't know!

Thank you all for sharing your insights. I'll let you know how I get on.

The Haberdashery / Do I need a french curve or a Dressmakers ruler
« on: July 03, 2020, 12:39:53 PM »
I'm still a novice, but I want to break away from shop bought patterns and either amend those patterns or start from scratch (initially copying shop bought items of clothes I love).

It looks like I'll need some sort of ruler with curves but I'm not sure where to start, a french curve or something like the Prym dressmakers ruler.

I can't work out the main difference/advantages of each. I would really appreciate some pointers.

Thanks!

Right, it took a while but I've worked out how to include photos of the 3 cats and my dog and popped some up on Pets Corner!

hank you again for the warm welcome, I already feel very at home here! Glad you’re all as crazy about your pets as I am. I’ll pop over to Pets corner and put up some pics now. I have 3 cats and a dog.

For the Irish contingent, I’m in Bray, Wicklow. The course is in BIFE.

I lived in London for a long time but moved home with the family about 10 years ago. Really didn’t appreciate the huge range of fabric and haberdashery shops there. I used to visit and day dream about what I could do with all the different trimmings and swaths of material. I’ll be relying heavily on internet shopping because I don’t think Hickeys is going to cut it for me!

Some of my inlaws live in Belfast so I pop up there every couple of months. Be good to get some shop recommendations for my next trip. My MIL would be interested too, she’s a great knitter.

PS @Iminei Maus definitely have hair and lovely markings.

Thanks for the welcomes! Yes @Iminei, Ty is a Bengal, he's 2 years old now. He's sitting on top of my old girl Sufi, she's an Egyptian Mau and is 14 now.

Hello from Ireland!

Another nameless parenting forum pointed me towards you lovely people.

I'm a newbie to both this forum and sewing. My mum tried to teach me when I was younger but I was not a great student.

I took it up again over the Christmas break and got hooked. I realised that there's tons I don't know hence signing up here.

I'm going to start a course next week because there's a few gaps in my knowledge but I really want to get into pattern adaption and designing my own clothes. Definitely nothing fancy, but I suspect I'll need help with that sort of thing in the future!
Thanks
