Title: Fabric slueths needed!
Post by: justpottering on September 24, 2018, 11:09:07 AM
Now I know there are some amazing fabric sleuths on here so I am asking for some assistance  :)

I'm after some fabric like this
https://www.plumbs.co.uk/fabric-range/fabric-details/regency-floral-/

For curtains
I am going cross eyed looking for same or similar, so would appreciate any tips or ideas

Thanks in excited anticipation

I’ve emailed them crafter no reply yet that would be ideal as other similar fabrics seem a bit peely wally to me

That's great!
I expect I shall be sorry but I have to ask  "What is peely wally?"

My husband who’s a Scot uses it to describe something that is washed out/not so bright
I have also heard members of his family use it to describe how they’re feeling if a bit off colour

Over here in Ulster/Scots land it's pronounced more 'paley wally' meaning a bit off colour.  :x

Well a visit from the Plumbs lady (actually she was a girl looked about 14 to me  :S ) confirmed that I really like the fabric, however she did not know the width so I couldn't work out the meterage required
It is also £36 per meter so it's not like I can say I will guestimate and order 30 meters in case I need to consider pattern matching for multi-panelled curtains that would take the cost of two pairs (albeit large pairs) of curtains would cost more than £1000

Ahem..... not sure I love it that much  -<

@justpottering It makes me wonder about skillsets nowadays..
The lady from Plumbs makes a personal visit to a potential customer for the specific purpose of discussing curtains and showing samples, but the lady from Plumbs doesn't know the width of the fabric?????

Regarding the cost, I was with my sister last Saturday who is having a bespoke pair of curtains made for a SMALL window in her new bedroom (they've just extended their house so they have a new master bedroom).
The cost of the curtains (window size I'm guessing is less than a metre high and about 1.3 metres across), with the curtains just sitting at the bottom of the window, plus a simple metal track, is £440!!!!!
(The fabric she chose was £36 per metre).

A lot of curtain fabric is around 45-48" wide so she would probably need single widths.  Add on enough for heading, hems and pattern matching comes to around 3m fabric.  Plus lining, heading, track and other sundries; the materials will cost well in excess of £200, plus the skills and time of the person making the curtains and hanging them.  If she's bought through a shop they will take a cut on top of what the maker charges.  It sounds about right.  Good curtains aren't cheap.

I think this is it: http://www.tissus-zanderino.be/tissus/tissus-de-decoration/jacquard/12127/jacquard-de-decoration-fleurs-creme-bordeaux-140cm (http://www.tissus-zanderino.be/tissus/tissus-de-decoration/jacquard/12127/jacquard-de-decoration-fleurs-creme-bordeaux-140cm)

Less than half the price she quoted you + delivery. Actually I think shipping is free for that quantity.

Good curtains are definitely not cheap. We paid over £500 for a pair to be made for our lounge a few years ago. Admittedly they are full length for an 8' wide window so they were far too heavy for me to handle myself. :S

It's also interesting to see the Vezelay's site gives far more information about the fabric (width and composition!!) than Plumbs do on their website.

She doesn't know the width  >< not much of a sales person then if she cannot work out what her customers require.
@BrendaP I have never come across (or used) curtain fabric less than 58 inch wide.

The last pair I made are 55" fabric - I've just measured them.  I think it's upholstery stuff that is (or was) usually a little bit narrower

Not gone right through the range but the nearest I have seen so far is this:

https://www.montgomery.co.uk/made-to-measure-curtains/belvoir-02-chintz/1849

The one on Tissus looks a much closer pattern.

Sometimes when you really want something, second best won't do, best to dig your plastic out.  I've done that and 20 years later I still love them. Think of it as an investment.

I've actually got the Montgomery Belvour one as a front door curtain and although it's swirly the actual flower is much paler than your Plumb one.

@justpottering, I used to make loose covers for Plumbs.  Be careful if you should decide to buy that fabric because everthing I used had been treated with a rubbery backing so that the covers did not slip.  I would think this process would be done before Plumbs took delivery.  Also, Plumbs do not make the fabric, so they must be buying it from a manufacturer.  But who ...?

That could explain the difference between Plumbs' price and the one fro the company Vezelay found - they would be paying more for it if it had been treated.

Good point @crafter I’ve bookmarked vezalays link it’s the same one and I’ve said no thanks to plumbs  :)
DH said to think of it as an investment too although his eyebrows shot up when I told him the price  0_0

Are these curtains for the new house @justpottering?  If so, I would agree with your OH.  As long as you are sure that you will still like the design in many years to come then go for it.  Buy it cheap, buy it twice, as they say.

They certainly are Crafter and having seen the fabric close up there are options to change the room décor if I fancy a change oh in about 20 years or so  0_0
I think they will suit what else I have planned for the sitting room, and as that also includes new furniture, I won't be changing it in a hurry

I will make my final decision when we actually get there and see if the room lends itself to what I have planned I certainly hope so otherwise it's back to the drawing board

I will admit to spending more on home furnishing fabrics than other things because all that effort required I want a nice finish that is achieved by some seriously nice fabrics

I can't wait  :loveit:
