Title: Part of an embroidery hoop?
Post by: annieeg on April 17, 2019, 17:05:37 PM
Hi,
I attach a picture of something sewing-machine related, but that I can't identify.
It has a kind of rubber suction pad (not very powerful) on the underside.
Does anyone have any idea what this might be for?

Thanks @Efemera .  Is there a term I can search on Google to see a demonstration?

Brother and Husqvarna call it a “free motion guide grip”.

If you do a YouTube search on free motion grip you should find some videos to explain.  Sometimes I use mine but I also have a pair of gardening gloves which have plastics dots on to help grip the fabric with. You put it on top of your material and press down on it while you move your material.

Here's one that is used with quilting rulers -  https://ukqu.co.uk/shop/sewing-accessories/free-motion-quilting-grip-5/ (https://ukqu.co.uk/shop/sewing-accessories/free-motion-quilting-grip-5/)
(I have this one - it wasn't as easy to use as I imagined, perhaps because I was learning to ruler quilt at the same time as how to use the shapes with the grip as well.)

Thanks to all for the information - particularly to @Morgan for all the different types and youtube links.
I'll have a play later on. :)
