In case it helps, these are images of the front panel and two end panels but I see no evidence of screws there.

Thanks Roger.

I have attached views of the rear of the machine and the top panel (2 views looking down).  There are five obvious screws in the rear panel (top left, top right, mid right, bottom right and a more obscure one below the carrying handle and near the lamp.  I have successfully removed these screws with an allen key.  In the top panel there are just two obvious screws, situated at either end and just behind the main thread spool rod.  They are slightly larger than the five back screws and also removed with a larger allen key.

I can't find any more screws to remove.  I had expected the back panel at least to come away at this point but apart from some movement around the needle end of the machine, the panels are still attached to each other.  I guess that there are concealed plastic clips but I'm reluctant to exert too much effort in case I inadvertently break something important. There are also several screws in the base of the machine but since the dealer said only that I would need to remove the back panel, I don't want to fiddle with the base screws without knowing exactly what they are holding together.

If any of these images look familiar I would appreciate any thoughts that you might have.  Incidentally, I tried to get hold of a service manual for this model but they are as rare as hens teeth.

Embroidery Machines / Pfaff Creative Vision 5.0 - home repairs

I've had this machine for just over ten years and it has worked really well and I've sewn loads, including the fancy embroidery.  However, I'm pretty sure that the transformer has gone and I've been able to get a Pfaff replacement transformer through the original dealer. I thought I would fit it myself as I'm pretty handy with a screwdriver.  But I can't get the casing off and I guess it has been put together as a puzzle to deter the likes of me from fiddling.  The dealer is reluctant to discuss the method, probably because they are being a bit pecious about knowledge.

I wonder if anybody has got experience of dismantling this or similar Pfaff machines and can offer a clue as to the sequence of panel removal to gain access to the innards?

I shall send the machine away to a Pfaff engineer only as a last resort as the expense to ship from a remote Scottish island to anywhere on the mainland, plus servicing costs, would probably outweigh the secondhand value of the machine.

Thank you StitchinTime and Marniesews.

The Bernina workbooks do show a bit of methodology especially for blind hemming technique which is useful.  I've always tended to use hand stitches for blind hemming as I feel more in control but I think I'll apply a bit more practise on the machine and see if I can't get a bit better at it.

Many of my utility stitches seem to be for stretch fabrics so I think I'll just make up some mini sample scenarios with some jersey off cuts and see how they perform in different situations.  In the past I've tended to use a narrow zigzag for stretch seams and finish off with the overlocker but it seems a shame not to use the range of preprogrammed stitches.

I like your use of the honeycomb stitch (which my machine does), Marniesews.  It is a long time since I made anything in Lycra.  Baton twirling was very popular at one time and I made numerous glittery outfits for them.

Having been unable to find any useful information on the Pfaff website I have come across a book on Amazon - Super Stitches Sewing by Nicole Vasbinder which I've just ordered 2nd hand for £3.99 and which might suggest some uses for all of these programmed stitches. If not, then it hasn't broken the bank.

I see from earlier posts that some people have Pfaff machines.  I have recently started to work my way through the manual of mine from scratch because although it is ten years old I have always tended to use a limited selection of its pre-programmed stitches and have not used the machine to its full potential. I am making samples which I am keeping in an A4 binder by running off rows of all the programmed stitches using their default settings and just seeing how they perform on a single layer of interfaced calico.  All is going well but the manual doesn't really show you under what circumstances you might use, for example, the 16 different overlock/overcast/mock cover hem/overlock blindhem variations and I wonder if anybody has come across any literature or online info regarding the use all of these built-in utility stitches?

I live just over 60 degrees North but although Shetland is NE UK it is still West of the Greenwich Prime Meridian by 1.29 degrees. So, everywhere East of the Greenwich zero line of longitude is East of me.  That takes in a bit of Lincolnshire, all of Norfolk, Kent and East of London.

Thank you for all your warm welcomes.  Of course, Shetland is, actually, the centre of the universe and everywhere else is a mere satellite!  ;)

I'll post some pics as I progress through my re-education of my fancy machine.  Unfortunately I don't have images of most of the work I did before I finished working as a business. It was finish one task and move straight onto the next with no time for photos. I'll see what I've got and put a couple of pictures up tomorrow.

Meanwhile, goodnight everyone.

I, like many, am returning to sewing after going off piste and doing some heavy studying with the Open University. Now I've got that out of my system I'm revitalising my creative side and warming up the old hand-eye-sewing machine coordination which has been dormant for several years.

I used to make bridal wear and other dressmaking commissions but now I need to start using up the accumulated stash of fabrics that I squirrelled away over the years and make some nice things for myself.  I bought a Pfaff Creative Vision 5.0 with all the embroidery software and attachments about ten years ago and although I did some embroideries for wedding garments at the time, I never truly examined and mastered the vast scope of the machine's potential so now I am going back to page 1 of the manual to start all over again.  If anybody is familiar with this machine I'd be truly grateful for a chin wag some time.  No doubt that as soon as I get stuck (probably about page 6) I'll be posting a message on the 'machines' page!

I'm pleased to be here and look forward to some sewing talk in the future.   :sew:
