Your Favourite Suppliers / Fabric shops in Krakow
« on: December 08, 2018, 08:15:14 AM »
We are off to Krakow for a few days later in the week. I would be very grateful to hear if anyone who has been there can recommend any facbric shops worth a peek? I have bought some fantastic jersey from Polish websites and would feel rude not checking out the bricks and mortar possibilities while there

Sewing Machines / Re: Bernina 570qe - class at Bogod and Company
« on: September 09, 2018, 07:02:15 AM »
I attended a class at Bogod a few years ago and it was excellent. It was very comprehensive and you get a manual to which you add samples. I would say it’s worth the cost of getting there. You will definitely learn a lot.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Looking for a pattern for this top

How about this one.
http://www.naughtybobbinpatterns.com/shop/presto-top

I have made it and was pleased with the results. It has an unusual construction. You cut two fronts, seam them down the middle and open them out, so the fabric in the front is double. Here’s mine:

Sewing Machines / Re: New Bernina
« on: July 03, 2018, 06:40:28 AM »
I bought one about a year ago and am delighted. No negatives as far as I’m concerned. It’s called a Quilters Edution because it includes a walking foot which I use a lot. I much prefer its 5mm foot for dressmaking than the one with a 9mm foot which I had before. Go on, you know you need it

I have seen this question before and most people will say Janome Cover Pro because that is what they have and all they know and is the most widely available. I used to have one and was never happy, as Crafter says, very temperamental. I finally bit the bullet and sold it and bought a Bernina L220 and it’s a dream to use in comparison. It purrs along and gives dependable, consistent results. I’m so glad I made the swap. The looper is a bit complicated to thread but like all things gets easier with practice. So I usually knot the thread and pull through. A bonus with the Bernina is that is uses regular sewing machine needles.

Having said all that, I have a friend with a Janome who wasn’t happy. She seems to have resolved most of the issues with missed stitches by using wooly nylon in the looper.

Fun with Fabric / Re: (Mis) Managing the Stash
« on: May 18, 2018, 09:03:59 AM »
I have too much   I have tried various forms of record keeping but finally found one that works for me. I bought a set of record cards and a box for them. I have card for each fabric with all the information about it and a little swatch stuck on. I like this rather than a list because the card is removed when it’s used and new ones can be inserted anywhere. Lists never worked for me. The actual fabric is in numbered boxes and the card tells me which box it’s in. Blimey, I sound like such a nerdy neat freak!

Fun with Fabric / Re: Sweatshirt fabric hunt- can you help please?
« on: April 06, 2018, 13:22:07 PM »
Thanks everyone.
Lizzy - I bought it this year, only about three weeks ago. When I wrote to Higgs & Higgs I did ask about suitable ribbing but they said they didn’t have a good match.

The trouble is, it’s tricky to  accurately match the colours online. I think I will probably go for a pink in the end. I just thought I would check here in case anyone had seen it. It’s not the end of the world, I’m sure she will love it. It’s beautifully soft on the inside. Will post a picture of her wearing it when it’s done.

That may be a few weeks as I have just arrived on a three week break in a cottage in Pembrokeshire, complete with sewing machine, overlocker and numerous items ready cut out  :). Hoping to be very productive, in between the coastal walks and seeing the grandchildren.

Fun with Fabric / Sweatshirt fabric hunt- can you help please?
« on: April 06, 2018, 07:25:35 AM »
I bought this ballerina fabric from Higgs and Higgs at the NEC sewing show to make my dgd a sweatshirt. When she saw it she was adamant that she would like a hoodie, which left me short of fabric for the waistband. Never mind, I thought, I will use ribbing instead.  However, despite having four different shades of grey ribbing, none of them look right.

Please does anyone have any scraps of this fabric I could purchase, or know where I might get some? (I wrote to Higgs & Higgs and they have sold out, without a prospect of getting any more.) I really must learn the lesson of buying extra fabric, but it was £16.99pm!
Thank you for reading.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Thumbs up for Netprinter
« on: April 04, 2018, 17:05:21 PM »
I have just sent off for my second order from them , having been very happy with the first. As you say, a reasonable cost if you do several at the same time. Apart from all the printing and sticking saved, I like that it’s also much easier to store them than the self assembly version.

What lies beneath... / Re: top for pj top in stretch fabric

How about grown on sleeves which don’t have a separate pattern piece? I used New Look 6217 for the top of these.

Fun with Fabric / Allowing for shrinkage
« on: January 30, 2018, 11:57:54 AM »
As part of my current stay visiting family in NZ I have had a lovely time visiting  ‘The Fabric Store’ in Christchurch. Last time I made the mistake of making my purchases only to find they had a big sale starting mid January. So this time I was patient. Lo and behold - a sale giving 40% off most fabrics and 20% off the rest.

As the lady was measuring out my fabrics for cutting she reminded me that they always give an extra 10% to allow for shrinkage! I don’t think I have ever come across this anywhere else. I have only ever seen advice to buy extra.

Most of my purchases were plain fabrics suitable for trousers so won’t photograph well. On my second visit  this rather nice silk had risen to the surface in all the rummaging and asked to come home with me.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Measuring the stretch of knits?
« on: November 21, 2017, 08:06:53 AM »
That’s a vey logical assumption to make. However, what it means is the direction from one selvege edge to the other. All knits have varying degrees of stretch in this direction. The lengthwise direction (same direction as the selvage) may have any amount, from none to lots of stretch. Confusingly,  a fabric which only has stretch width-wise is often called 2-way stretch and if it stretches in both directions it’s called 4-way. Good luck with your project!

Fun with Fabric / Bed jacket envy
« on: November 04, 2017, 10:41:01 AM »
My granddaughter just turned 8 and requested I make her a bed jacket just like mine, right down to the toggle buttons. It amuses me, as I don’t remember ever wanting a replica of anything my grandma wore!

She also asked me to make a mermaid costume ( I don’t have one of those!)

Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: variegated thread
« on: October 29, 2017, 08:06:00 AM »
A few months ago I had a similar lusting for variegated thread, but mine was for overlocking. It was really difficult to find overlocking thread as most seems to be for embroidery but I ended up with some from the the bottom of this page and I love them. (I only use it in loopers, not the needles)

(This website also has zips with rainbow coloured teeth which I have never seen before!)
