A Good Yarn / Crochet tutorial on YouTube
« on: September 22, 2022, 12:42:50 PM »
I’ve just been to see a good friend who recently lost her husband.  He was an invalid for many years and needed a lot of care, so now she is at a bit of a loose end and wants to learn to crochet to fill the evenings.

I will try and teach her but know someone recommended some YouTube tutorials. I think they were by two blokes but I can’t remember more than that.  Can anyone help me out?

I’m popping round tomorrow with some of my spare hooks and some yarn but won’t have time for a session till next week. I’m hoping if she watches YouTube I won’t have to teach her myself as I’m not good at explaining things

Access All Accessories / Spencer Ogg Inner Circle bag
« on: September 11, 2022, 13:41:09 PM »
I needed a larger handbag and found that an old leather coat had inexplicably shrunk whilst in the wardrobe so this pattern seemed just the thing.

I really should have made one in fabric first but stitching very slowly and a new Schmetx leather needle got me there.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Memorycraft 400e
« on: September 01, 2022, 16:47:42 PM »
I have chance to buy a 400e at a good price. I know the original owner and it will have been carefully used and well looked after.

I know Brother machines are more sought after but wonder about this one. I’ve no experience of embroidery machines so don’t know if it’s a good one or not.

Anybody any experience of this model?

In the wardrobe / StyleArc Geri
« on: August 12, 2022, 09:59:56 AM »
I’ve just seen StyleArc’s latest release and I rather like it
https://www.stylearc.com/shop/pdf-sewing-patterns/geri-dress-multi-size-pdf/?attribute_pa_pattern-format=multi-size-tiled-download

It looks like a useful layering piece, but I am waiting until September as I don’t fancy any of the freebies this month. Tight moi?

Also Pattern Review should have a few reviews by then.

Patterns Discussion / StyleArc Montana
« on: July 20, 2022, 18:49:23 PM »
I need an easy summer dress and am drawn to the Montana and know that a few people on here have made it.

Ill do a toile first because I usually plump for sizing up rather than sizing down and I know StyleArc often run large.

I have some beautiful double gauze that I would love to use but can’t find a review of the pattern in this type of fabric. Has anybody used anything like this?

It’s really impractical using white fabric for a travel bag but DD and I are off to Vegas later this year for my 70th and I think Vegas needs something less than subtle.

I plan to use Odicoat to help keep things protected, I’ve never tried it but we shall see how things go.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Sew Beautiful by Kennis Wong
« on: April 02, 2022, 14:34:02 PM »
Sew Beautiful by Kennis Wong is a book of basic patterns, that have to be traced from a master sheet.

I have made several garments and have traced all the patterns I wish to make. The instructions are very comprehensive and it is a very good book for the beginner dressmaker.

A very useful book.

I bought this when I couldn’t find my original copy.  Original, tatty copy has surfaced so this one needs to go.

Access All Accessories / Bag to deconstruct
« on: February 27, 2022, 18:01:59 PM »
I occasionally have been give or have bought, bags to deconstruct to save the hardware.

Today I have been given a Versace handbag and am beyond excited. The quality of the hardware is superb, even the Chicago screws have Versace embossed into them.

I’m going to unstitch as much as possible so I can repurpose things like the internal pockets and the straps.

I will use the metal logo discreetly, but as the bag will be for me or my DD, I don’t see it being a problem. I’m unlikely to be accused of forgery.

The leather is so soft and supple I want to reuse as much as I can.

The Haberdashery / Seam allowance guides
« on: December 28, 2021, 14:29:07 PM »
I have just acquired these seam guides.

The will either languish in the tool box for ever or be incredibly useful, but at £8 for both including postage I thought they were worth a punt.

The girl who makes them usually does templates for some of the bag making patterns I use and she also says she does FM quilting rulers, which was how I found the seam guides.

Nice to support a small business.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

A Good Yarn / Adapting patterns
« on: November 10, 2021, 15:42:39 PM »
I am currently knitting this for GD
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/grannys-favourite.

She was here today so we held it up for size and it’s looking good.

She really could do with another cardigan so I was browsing Tikkiknits pattern and found another in a very similar shape but done in garter stitch.

Rather than buy the garter  stitch pattern could I just use the stitch count and increases etc. that I have on Granny’s Favourite, ditch the lace pattern and knit the whole thing in garter stitch with stocking stitch bands?

She is only just 3 so it is a small size so surely any size variation would be minimal.

A Good Yarn / Little red cardigan
« on: November 01, 2021, 12:03:34 PM »
My DD dropped a heavy hint that GD could do with a couple of cardigans for winter.

I always knit in acrylic for the kids as everything just gets chucked in the washer.

I’ve found a couple of balls of a nice cheerful red in the stash and have just cast on this

Let’s hope it gets completed a little quicker than the socks!

Apologies to anyone who has just bought from them but Sew Hot have 20% off fabric at the moment.

Luckily for me they stock Moda grunge which I need for my next quilt so a very nice saving.

They are moving to larger premises apparently.

Your Favourite Suppliers / Sew Hot, so good
« on: September 18, 2021, 15:33:43 PM »
I ordered some bag hardware from Sew Hot on Friday morning and paid for the standard Royal Mail service, 3 to 5 days.

It plopped through the letter box just after 10 this morning, wonderful service.
