Title: Oil for 99k
Post by: Emerion on April 12, 2021, 21:38:18 PM
Hello,
A bottle of oil that I just bought for my 99k was faulty. The nib was solid plastic too far down, so that the hole was much too wide when I cut it. I’ve already lost a third of the oil, when I knocked the bottle over, so I’m giving up on it.  It was from a quality Singer shop, so I expect this is just bad luck. I’m wondering about those oil pens. Gunold or Prym. Are they as good or better for oiling an 99k machine? I’m hoping they won’t have this faulty nib problem at least.

I have one and find it brilliant for getting into tricky places.

The oil pens are pretty good.  Bernina had an excellent one, but I see they have now changed it to a bottle!  I think you were unlucky with your bottle of oil - was it a Singer one?  They are usually pretty good, but any oil pen claiming to be machine oil should be absolutely fine!

A bottle of oil that I just bought for my 99k was faulty.

If you search for needle tip/ped bottle or syringe you will find some products.  I can't post photos or links atm. My syringe was from a horological supplier in the UK.  It is refillable (as it contained clock oil) and the needle measures about 9 cm.

I refill my vintage Singer Oil Cans using a blunt syringe.
I have the enjoyment of using the oil cans over and again, and they don't rust inside with oil sloshing around in them.

Another option is to find a vintage Valvespout Oil Can.
They're often for sale on auction sites or Vintage Tools websites. They have a really long tip, they're easily re-filled, and have a permanent tip that screws completely shut, so they can't spill or leak in your sewing bag/case.

I use something very similar to this

I use an extra long needle tipped horological oil applicator. It comes filled with oil which I replace with SMO.
