I mentioned last month that it might be nice to do a Sock knit along this month so if anyone is interested shall we start, I was thinking of starting next week.
I am not thinking of any hard and fast rules but I will post some notes and links on Monday for anyone who needs any help or inspiration. In the meantime maybe you would like to look out some sock wool there are loads of different types out there and of course you can use thicker yarn if you want heavier socks.

As part of my 'try something new' campaign a few years ago I knit myself some socks following a Craftsy programme. They turned out so big (my measurements not tension :|) that my husband has worn them since. He claims they are the most comfortable socks he owns and looks hopefully at me with puppy eyes every time he wears them. However, I'm not a knitter and that pair was enough for me to be satisfied - having said that it would solve the 'what do I get him for Christmas' dilemma!! :laughing:

I have also been investigating 'slipper socks' as I would like to knit a pair for when my Tigger socks are in the wash. Haven't found a free pattern that I really like. Has to be knitted in the round, can't be doing with sewing!

I'm in. I've started on my 2nd pair yesterday. They will never look as well matched as your @Celia. But DD will love them.
This time, I'm doing the Snake River sock pattern and following along another video series to see what else I can learn. But here is the first cuff.

Time to introduce my socks. I am knitting cuff down socks using Patons Kroy Socks Yarn in Slate Jacquard. Needles are 2.5mm circular needles. The sock is from Knit A Sock (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uewyVE7rkEc&t=629s) and I chose to knit the pattern for the leg and instep from the Snake River Sock (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/snake-river-socks) pattern.
I have chosen to knit the socks at the same time on 2 separate needles. The cuffs are done which was the easy part.

I've now started the first pattern repeat on the 2nd sock. Once it is done, I will probably knit the leg on the first sock and then go back and knit the leg on the 2nd sock.

I’ve knitted socks from a kit before so have no idea about yarn or pattern. Any help including stockists gratefully received.
I only buy as much wool as possible socks for winter these days and find the heel gets worn out fairly quickly. Is there anything I need to consider when making hand knitted ones? Is it ok to use 100% wool to knit them?

@classical retro, look at my post and watch the videos on Knit Socks.
When I knit socks I use wool and nylon. These socks are 75% wool, 25% nylon. I’m hoping the padded heel on these ones are continued on down until you finish the gusset. I did them on the previous socks to see if they will last longer on DD this winter.
For this pair I’m doing a more difficult pattern and following along. I’m enjoying it so far and am learning lots.

@classical retro socks are mostly knitted using wool with a small percentage of nylon. It is generally called sock yarn and is widely available at any knitting shop or internet supplier.
A good place for beginners is the Knitting Squirrel website. She has a very detailed sock knitting tutorial for first time sock knitters. That's what I used for my first pair. I now use a basic free pattern that I had with Opal sock yarn because it's a good fit for me.

This is another nice and reasonable priced yarn it is however a little thinner but I have knitted it to my usual size and it is fine, very soft yarn though.

I'm joining in, I bought a ball of Regia stripe yarn yesterday. I'm abandoning the cardigan I was knitting in black with a lace border as I simply can't see what I am trying to do. It will be unwound and made into something simpler.

The Regia wools are brilliant. I made GS a pair of toddler socks from the leftovers after a grown up pair. He loved them. They were handed down to another set of GS's and they were as good as new.

@Ploshkin, I had a look at the Knitting Squirrel and that is a good website to learn how to knit socks. I will be using some of her ideas to knit DDIL and DGS's socks.
The socks are coming along. One sock now has 2 pattern repeats done on it and I will probably do 4-5 repeats in total before I decide if I want to do more than that. DD loves the yarn so she will be happy to have 2 pairs of socks to wear this winter when feeding her horses.

I dug out a ball of sock yarn and started on a sock last night - thank you @Celia for the nudge.
about 3 years back I bought half a dozen sock yarns with different fibre content to try out. This one is 50:25:25 wool / polyamide / viscose. I am not a fan of self patterning yarns and avoid them now but I bought this before I decided that I didn't like them. It's a 3 ply and looks as if it is coming up a bit small but it is nice and stretchy and I think it will be fine - I like well fitting socks not loose, floppy ones. In the flesh it's actually more red than orange. I'm using a free pattern that I got with a ball of sock wool. It's cuff down. I had several tries at toe up and just didn't like doing it that way so I stick with cuff down now.

Rico Sock Stop - Non-Slip Latex Based Paint - available from Woolwarehouse but probably lots of places.
You paint a pattern on the sole of the sock and there you go.

It is a bit different as it is a toe up sock with an afterthought heel, I enjoyed it and if anyone else wants to do something different then it is fun. I will post photos later and more details of how I kitted these socks.
Please post a photo of your wool and also tell us a bit about the sort of socks you are going to knit. There is no time limit on when they need to be done but it would be good to have interim photos too.

OK. Tentatively testing the water with my big toe... I think I'm in! I thought I had some suitable yarn in the stash, but I can't lay my hands on it, so, OH is going to collect some after work for me from a lady on FB.
It's advertised as Sock Yarn and the name is Rainbow Ioro, although I have no clue as to the brand.
I was going to use the same pattern I used for the last Christmas socks, but wondering now, if I might go for something a little fancier... I will check the links.

Ok, well, I've has a look, and they all look very complicated. :facepalm:
So, I think I will go with the pattern I used before, which is from VeryPink.com, and is the Toe-Up Socks, Using German Short Rows. The sizes fit Men, Women and children, and her explanation of the process is excellent. Very plain, but as I'm using Rainbow yarn, that's OK.
One day I'll progress to a fancy cable... :rolleyes:

I’m in a little late.
I haven’t finished my cardigan but love socks and need a change so don’t tell @Lowena but I’m putting it away for a while.
I’ll sort out yarn later but intend to do two at once on long cables as I have severe second sock syndrome.
Will look for yarn and choose a pattern later, there must be something in the stash.

Woo hoo! I did a tension square for some leftover wool and, wonder of wonders, it came out exactly right for the pattern. That NEVER happens! Only problem is that I haven't got enough for the whole job.

I don't knit socks very often so I forget how to turn the heel every time! I've done it now using a very helpful tutorial on german short rows.

Thank you @Ploshkin a kind offer. It's not sock wool, I'm knitting slipper socks and am using Drops Nepal left over from my cardi and hat. I may have something to go with it or I could order an odd ball in.

It's not usual to wash yarn unless it is obviously soiled. Better wait and then wash the finished item; that will help smooth out any irregularities.
As for finding the end bit in the middle of the ball ... :scream:
It's a hot topic, some people like to pull from the middle, others of us much refer to work from the outside. The reasons why I don't like pulling from the middle is that it always gets to a point where the whole lot collapses and then I have to try and sort it whilst it's connected to the knitting, and more often than not fishing around for that end results in a tangled birdsnest coming out rather than a single end.
The only time I pull from the middle is if I'm rewinding using a winder, the ball jumps around less and pulling it all in one go means it gets further in before it collapses. I usually only rewind if I'm trying to divide a large ball into two so that I can work both socks at the same time. If it's a patterned yarn I might rewind several times in order to find the colour repeat. I do like my socks to be identical twins, not fraternal siblings.

I've made a start. The plan is to use turquoise (which is rather lighter and brighter than in the photo) in every alternate stripe with different colours between.

Embarrassingly, I didn't finish the sock kit (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/the-sock-knitting-kit-six-splendid-patterns-for-toasty-toes) socks so now's my chance. I am doing the Unisex Socks. I don't have the ball band and there is only one ball, but the wool is soft so that's a bonus.
The kit has 5 pins, 3mm by the looks of things, which I didn't use last time. I'm wondering whether that was because I needed 3.25 to get the correct gauge. Is knitting with 5 like knitting on 3 but with fewer stitches per pins? (52 to cast on.)
I also like the idea of doing two at once so at least there is some chance of them being the same size. Do I knit one from the outer ball and the other from inside the ball or divide the one ball in half as best I can?

Well, @classical retro , knitting on 5 means exactly what you say, though strictly speaking the knitting is on 4 needles because the 5th travels round, as it were.
I have tried knitting one item from the outside of the ball and one from the inside but the yarn has to be untangled fairly often which would be more nightmarish with that number of needles as well. If the yarn is a 100g ball, you could wind off 50g of yarn using kitchen scales to get the right amount.

@classical retro do as Flobear says and wind off half the wool.
If you have the self patterning sort of yarn, then you must rewind the second ball so that the pattern is turned back the right way and will match. Start the second sock at the same colour as the first.
You can calculate from the number of rows in the decrease, how long the toe part is. (2" on my pattern)
Then you can stop knitting the straight bit of the foot and start the toe at the right place to make the sock fit you. You will find them really comfortable.

If your yarn is 4ply weight (fingering/sock) then unless you knit very tightly 3.25mm needles are much too big for socks. They would be fine for knitting a 4 ply jumper or hat or whatever, but socks need to be at a much firmer tension/guage - unless you want them to wear through very quickly.
I am using 2.25 needles, 4 ply yarns and have cast on 64 stitches (cuff down) which I nearly always do. I knit to a farly average tension and I know that they will fit my 5 - 5.5 UK size feet.

I nearly always use 2.5 needles for my socks I am quite a tight knitter so I have with some wools gone to 2.75.
I usually use a 60 stitch pattern for myself but interestingly the last pair were a bit snug, i knitted them from the toe up, shouldn’t make a difference but :thinking: I also knitted them two at a time but on 2 sets of needles so I knitted the toe of one and then the other then moved on to the foot etc I loved this as it meant two finished socks. I use magic loop most of the time so can in theory do two at a time but really didn’t like this method last time I tried it but might try again sometime.

I've finished one sock, and tried it on for size before cutting the yarn. It fits so will go ahead with it's mate.

I'm going to upset the apple cart. When I knit DGS's socks, I use 3.25 mm needles and sock yarn. I do a K2, P2 rib to the toes. Why you ask? He is diabetic and likes the socks knit to this gauge. He has never worn out a pair and the boys across the street are wearing them now. Maybe they will wear them out.
The socks I am knitting right now are on 2.5mm needles for DD. I've only knit her heavier socks so wonder how these will wear for her. I will be knitting her heavier socks when I get these socks and another pair knit. I have the yarn for them in the stash and am looking forward to making them.

Tonight’s job is to wind the balls and knit my swatch.
A swatch that's big enough to measure properly is about half the size of a single sock - and needs to be knitted in the round if the sock pattern is in the round. So why not just get stuck in and work a decent portion of the sock, measure it for guage and if it's OK then you have half a sock already completed. 0_0

Because @BrendaP the pattern I am using needs you to know how many stitches you are getting to the inch as you choose the type of yarn and the needle size

I only need to knit an inch or so of a 4" width and its now done. Just need to measure the width of my foot.
I like to kit a sample before I start to get a feel for the yarn. This has got silk in so a little indulgent for socks but they will feel beautiful

The kit comes with 2.75 needles,which is a bit confusing as the booklet says the mid calf socks can be knitted with from the yarn and needles in the kit. The tension square asks for 3mm needles though and Brenda, indeed has a firmer knit than the 3.25 needles, however it is smaller than the required tension according to the pattern. How can I remedy this?
The yarn I think is sports weight (is that aran?), or double knitting, certainly not 4ply, and the finished size should be women's medium. With size 4 shoe, I consider myself to have small feet. Do I?
Even more confusing it's written in k2p2 rib, but the gauge is in stocking stitch, which I intend to use. I shall definitely divide the wool into two, but as I only have one set of 5 pins will have to do one at a time. However I have found another set of 2.75 4 pins. so could have one roaming needle and knit the two simultaneouly.
And the learning from this exercise, thus far, never throw the ball band away until the garment is completed!

@Ellabella My husband has been wearing a pair with silk in the mix. They have pilled slightly after quite a few washes, but still beautifully comfortable. ( I really ought to have hand washed them :|).

@classical retro I've knitted most of my socks from the same basic pattern. The pattern is for 4 ply on 3mm needles. When I have had 3 ply yarn I use smaller needles but to compensate I knit the next size up. There's quite a bit of leeway in sock fitting and the most important measurement, the length of the foot, you have complete control over regardless of your yarn, needles or tension because you start shaping when the foot length is correct for your foot.

Not promising anything but I've found out the wool and pins and circular needles. I've also found the swatch I did - pity I can't remember which needles I did it on.
All I have to do now is find where I put all my patterns, they're in a folder and I knew exactly where they were before we moved ><
Until I decide on the pattern I can't do much else.
I'm not a speedy knitter so this could take some time if I do decide to have a go.
Quick question - Do I unravel my swatch and start the socks by using the wool from that (it's still attached to the ball!!) or do I just knit away and hope I have enough? - looking at the swatch it knits up as a pattern.

Yet more research reveals that the wool in the kit isn't enough to make the socks, so I've gone for this (https://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/drops-nord-rust-mix-11-50g) and will use the pattern. Looks like I'll have a busy weekend if I'm to catch up. Hope there are a few good matinees on.

@Iminei I can't wear anything itchy next to my skin but I do wear hand knitted socks which are usually wool with 25% nylon or may have silk in the mix. I think sock yarn is generally designed to be soft. I do often wear thin cotton socks under as it's mostly a cold time of year when I'm wearing them. They're not grippy and elasticated but knit is stretchy so they don't fall down, might wrinkle a bit but I only knit shortish ones anyway and am happy with a rucked up bit above the top of my boots.

@classical retro please don’t worry about catching up, this isn’t a race it is just lovely to see what other people are doing, I am only as far as the rib on one foot and since I am in a sock making mood I will probably continue with more socks.

As far as size is concerned I have just decided to go up a size as the last ones came out a bit smaller, the important thing is to go up by 4 stitches if you are wanting to do a classic type heel, there are loads of different ones, now I am worrying they may be too big …… I usually use 60 stitches but this time am trying 64
@Iminei i am the same I can’t wear real wool jumpers, my excuse for wearing cashmere, I have no problems with wool socks not sure why.

@Celia I suppose we don't have the same sensitivity in the skin on our feet. I too can't wear woollen jumpers next to my skin but I can wear one over a short sleeved cotton T shirt provided the wool is soft and there is no wool touching my neck so I have to be very choosy about styles. I would like to be able to wear more wool rather than fleece.

@Ploshkin yes that’s me too, I am lucky as I used to work with cashmere and ended up with all the reject, samples etc but it has rather spoilt me because it is about the only thing that keeps me warm in winter. I still have some left so will probably need to knit some of that up soon, don’t think it would make good socks though :loveit:

If the guage is in stocking stitch you should work any tension swatch in stocking stitch.
Also, as I mentioned in my previous post if the socks are to be knitted in the round then the tension swatch should be worked in the round - or a square where you knit across, *leave a loose loop of thread and knit across again. Repeat from * In that way you always have the front of the work facing you , as you do when knitting in the round.
This is necessary because many, probably most, people get a different tension when knitting than they do when purling. Does your back and forth stocking stitch show 'rowing out'? That's when the ridges go in pairs with a looser row and then a tighter row. It's often the purl that's looser.
I've knit so many socks now that if I'm using 4 ply thickness of any brand and my favourite 2.25mm needles I don't bother with the tension swatch. Hand knitted socks need to be snug fitting with a little bit of negative ease. Try the socks on as you go. If they are snug around your foot make them to the full foot length, if they are not so snug make the foot a bit shorter than yours to put the negative ease into the length. Hand knitting is very flexible, even at the tighter than average guage needed for socks.

I haven't started knitting yet apart from the 10 cm square for tension. Never occurred to me to knit a tension square in the round - I'm always learning something from lovely TSPers :grouphug:

I haven't started knitting yet, still casting off my baby blanket. I did manage to wind one of the skeins of wool yesterday though - yes, wool + 15% nylon. I can't wear wool, but I know DD won't have a problem, and she loved the last pair of socks I knit for her.

I'm wondering now if my pattern is suitable for 'fingering'... :thinking:

Come on @Diane you can do it, just grab some sock yarn and have a go, knit a very basic sock and see how it comes out we can adjust the size for a second pair if need be. I would suggest either

Great get that wool out and find the needles. I am a size 61/2 and usually knit a 60 stitch sock but am just trying a 64 in the YSW sock yarn, this might be a mistake but if it is I will give them to my son. If you need a pattern let me know. :loveit:

It's strange. I use a circular needle for all my knitting and do magic loop for tubular knitting wherever possible to avoid having to sew things up. But, I wouldn't even attempt magic loop for socks. I like my dpns for socks.

The gauge says "6 inches per inch worsted weight, 7 stitches per inch sport's weight", which I read literally and stocking stitched those numbers. Maybe I should make a bigger piece then measure a square inch then count. :| The wool I've been looking at is 4 ply which I've discovered is thinner than sports weight which is 5 ply. So I'll have to use my brain rather than be an automaton, my preferred way of doing things these days!
The yarn is sock wool, so should stay up Iminei. I looked up double cast on method, which may be a help, so I'm going to give it a try. If not, the shirring elastic will come out.

Busy day today, but I've got round to assembling my ingredients. Like @Ploshkin , I can't use a circular needle for socks, so not only have I had to buy yarn, I've also had to buy DPN's to go with it...
What I've found out is, that I have quite a few DPN's but unfortunately, they have all got muddled up. I spent a happy hour :angry: sorting them out, and sizing them, only to realise, I have lots of 3.25 and 3.50 but nothing smaller. Hopefully Mr Amazon will do his stuff, and by tomorrow I will have suitable needles.
On to the pattern. :facepalm: :thinking: Firstly, I couldn't get in to Ravelry, so I needed to do lots of jiggery pokery with passwords etc. Then, which pattern to choose? Only time (and my lack of skill) will tell whether it's the right one! :S

A square inch isn't really enough to measure - it needs to be at least 2" x 2" and preferably 4" x 4" and you need to cast on more stitches that that so that you are not measuring over the outside few stitches which can easily be distorted. If your guage is 7 stitches per inch that's 28 inches per 4" so you need to measure over 28 stitches which means that you need to cast on about 34-36 stitches for your swatch - and if the pattern will be worked in the round you need that many stitches again or do the loopy back trick.
That's why I said in a previous posting that for socks it's hardly worth doing a swatch. Just start knitting and by the time it's big enough to call it a tension swatch you will have a decent chink of sock already knitted.

I've found a pattern I think may work. It's a free one from Staci Perry from Very Pink Knits, and it's lacey... I'm hoping that it will be as easy, and well written as the other pattern of hers I've done. Bubbles Down the Drain (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bubbles-down-the-drain)
I'm going to try it, although it has Short Rows instead of German Short Rows. At least it has no charts to figure out...

I'm testing a pattern for a doll designer and that is using up all my knitting time. She wants it done by tomorrow :laughing: :laughing: and I'm not there yet. Seven days to knit a jumpsuit, shawl, and purse is a bit unrealistic as she is finding out. Real life gets in the way which I told her.
I'll get back at the socks as soon as this test pattern is knit.

@Celia i can only do Kitchener stitch if I have the instructions in front of me and say them aloud as I do it, hence my preference for toe up socks.

My new needles arrived, a great set, and very cheap, but far too long for socks. For now, I've cobbled together a set of mis-matched dpns - same sze but different lengths, and they are OK, but not ideal. Just ordered another set.
I wish I could get more of this lovely yarn I bought from a local seller, but she only has DK left. The yarn I got was reduced to £6 a skein, and is beautiful to knit with. I've looked at other sellers, and it can be £20+ per skein. :(

I finished my first sock last night!
Now I've got to try and find the same colour change in the ball to startvthe second one and it's a very long colour repeat.

Before I go and start a pile of ironing that I've managed to ignore for a few days, I thought I would post a pic of my first 'Bubbles Down the Drain' Sock.
Once I got into my stride with the short rows, everything has gone smoothly. The next challenge will be the heel...
Having said all that, I'm finding it very pleasant using proper Fingering Sock Yarn. Just waiting for my proper needles to arrive, and life will be sweet.

Ooh, that looks really good Jessie, I like the colour. I've got some plain grey flecked sock yarn that I would like to do in a textured pattern. I might look at that one though it isn't my usual cuff down process and I've never ventured into German short rows as far as I know.

@b15erk Jessie, keep using the mis-matched needles for the pair. If you change part way through, or use a different set for the second sock it could affect your tension. No need to ask how I know!
Mine are coming along, only a couple more stripes on each before I start the heel flaps.

@Ploshkin , these aren't called German Short Rows , just ordinary Short Rows, and after a few false starts, I found them very easy.
I'll report back on the heel, which may be a challenge...
I have to say, I find Staci Perry's (Very Pink Knits), patterns, very easy to follow, and this has another advantage in that it's free!

@Lowena , I would have said exactly the same (and probably did!) last year, before I knitted my first pair of socks.
I found lots of help on YouTube, and for me Staci Perry was the one who clicked with me. Yes, I made a lot of mistakes, and most of my first efforts were not wearable, but for the first time last year, I made proper socks. Ugly socks, but proper...
Yes, I still have to refer to videos to clarify certain techniques, but at the end of the day, it's a ball of yarn and a set of needles, if I make a mess of it, I've not lost a lot, but I've given it a shot.
The thing that spurred me on to try this knit along, is that I can ask for help, I can admire what everyone else is doing, and I learn something from people who are more experienced. My DD and BF also loved their hand made gifts.
Please don't abandon it out of hand, you may just gain something from joining in.

Well, I sorted out my patterns, set myself up in front of the computer and began a toe up Craftsy class I had. Managed to cast on the stitches, began first knitting - well, what a (trying to think of polite phrase here and failing). So I ripped it all off my dpn and tried with magic loop. Nope, not going to happen.
Undaunted I moved to a different Craftsy class, top down this time. Double Norwegian cast on - I hadn't pulled enough of the wool to finish all the stitches, undo , allow extra wool and start again. Mind wanders and I manage to get into a pickle, nevermind I can do this, start again. Get nearly all stitches on and I run out of tail wool again. Undo, carefully replace needles, wool and pattern and head towards drinks cabinet........

@realale If you cast on starting with a slip knot and working forwards from there, ie make a stitch and put it on the lh needle, knit behind it to make the next stitch and so on you just cast on the stitches you need and start knitting. Simples.

Cuff down means exactly what it says, you start knitting at the cuff and work downwards towars the heel and on to the toe. Toe up is the opposite. 99.99% of all socks are knitted that way. A few very perverse patterns have you start at the heel and work both ways.
Turning the heel just means a few decreases (knitting 2 together or similar) in the right places to make the sock foot shaped.
Short rows, German or otherwise, just means turning the work before the end of a row, though there are fancy tricks to avoid that leaving a hole in the work.

@Celia I can manage scarfs! :thumbsup: A basic stockinette, 6 or 7 inches wide only takes me about 10 days. I'm also proficient ok at dishcloths knit on the diagonal. Beyond that all I know is what DPN stands for.
Question though, oh sock Gurus, anyone work with non wool sock yarn? I'll need to find mine, it was a blend with nylon for durability. I'm a bit allergic to wool, at least on my upper torso, and sensitive to nylon. What I have splits terribly, has no stretch at all but knits up just gorgeous and crochets nicely too. But I don't really knit or crochet so clueless.

@Renegade Sewist , I've used non-wool yarn previously, as I hate the feel of wool on my skin - not sure it's an allergy...? I certainly can't use lanolin based creams.
This time I tried 'proper' sock yarn, wool, with 15% nylon and it's hand dyed - no I didn't sell a kidney for it, it was a local bargain on FB.
I have to say knitting with it is a delight, and surprisingly, it hasn't troubled my hands.
I'll be giving these socks away as Christmas presents, so they won't irritate my skin.
I checked out the price of hand knitted socks yesterday :faints: £25 +

@Renegade Sewist i have only used sock yarns with wool in but I can’t wear wool jumpers but can wear wool socks, if you go back a bit in this thread there are more comments about different wools.

I am hoping to get back to my socks in the next couple of days. I'm almost done the test pattern but I'm still working on it trying to do lots of rows a day. I'm missing my sock knitting time.
Hand knit socks are expensive. The yarn I'm using right now costs $8.49 CDN for a 50 gram skein and I buy 3 skeins for socks and then knit a doll's sweater with the left over yarn. When I buy DGS's yarn, it is about $32 CDN for a 100 gram skein. I have to buy 2 for his socks and should buy 3 so I can knit 2 pairs of socks. But it is pricey but the yarn is beautiful to knit; so soft and lovely to work with.

I can’t wear wool but love the wool socks I’ve had. Keep your feet nice and warm in winter. Maybe I’ll have to think about knitting my own. Can’t join in this time round as life is a bit up and down at the mo and I can’t concentrate. Sewing is much easier at the mo as I don’t have to really think about that too much.

A little disheartened this morning, as my sock looks mightily deformed... The length of the foot looks ridiculously long - although I measured it against one I knit last year.
I also had to unpick a few times. :rolleyes: I think this wasn't helped by the yarn I'm using. When I'm knitting certain colours, the yarn goes quite thin, which leaves the stitches loose on the needle. Sometimes they are slipping off at both ends, and being a lace pattern, they soon unravel...

Most of the socks I've made have been 75% wool, 25% nylon; Opal and Regia are the easiest obtain brands in UK. More important to me though is that the wool content is superwash because I know that my socks always get thrown into the washing machine.
With this pair I'm breaking the 'rules' a bit in that the main blue colour isn't really sock wool, just a 4-ply that's 75% acrylic, 25% superwash. Only time will tell how well they wear but I have yet to throw away a pair of hand knitted socks because they wore out, but I have discarded/given to young grandchildren socks which have felted and become too small.
Heel flaps completed so ready to turn the heel now.

I absolutely agree with everything you say. The only reason I can see for knitting toe up is if you are short of yarn - no big deal if the cuff is a bit short but the foot has to fit.

These are made in west yorkshir spinners signature 4ply yarn which is 75%woolon 25%nylon and I am knitting on 2.5 magic loop needles. This is left over yarn so I might have to be inventive.

I've transferred my stitches to a circular needle to try the foot length, only to find, that the cord isn't long enough...
The only other cord which is long enough is a Haya Haya one, which isn't interchangeable with the KnitPro ones, so a slightly longer job... :rolleyes:

I managed to try the sock yesterday, and it's fine - it still looks odd though...
I got distracted though (for a change :rolleyes:), and decided to go off piste, to make a little pair of Hug Boots. I had a very small amount of cotton yarn left from the small knitted blanket, and decided that as they only take 17g of yarn, I would give it a shot. Talk about playing Yarn Chicken! Well, I made it - with a few metres to spare! :dance:
A pair of little Hug Boots to go with the blankets I've made for DD's BiL and his partner. She's seeing them at the weekend, so I needed to get them done.
Hope these qualify as sock wear, if not, I'll understand if I am disqualified... :S ;)

@Starryfish they look great, I have used that yarn once and it is very good, I love knitting proper fair isle but the floats on socks even when knitted in make the socks a bit too thick for me.
I unpicked my garter stitch heel last night as it just didn’t look right so that’s today knitting.

Not down to the heel on my first sock yet. Not worth a picture - they are plain fawn, for a Certain Person. It is a fine twist merino, and I keep catching my needle in the yarn and splitting it. (but not noticing till 5 rows down) I prefer the self striping, you feel you are making progress when the pattern emerges.

I knit on the socks last night and got 16 rows done on 1 sock. That is a full pattern. It was nice to be knitting them once again.

Well, I finally made a start yesterday and did the top cuff in K2 P2 rib then had a go at the patterned leg bit. I'm not sure 4 sts on cable needle with Aran weight yarn on a small item like a slipper sock is going to work but I'll keep going for a few more rounds before I decide whether to change it.

There are some amazing pairs of socks out there.
I've just managed to work out how to knit on four pins having improvised when I tried doing socks before. I'm feeling happier about the swatch I'm doing now the stocking stitch is becoming obvious. I'm using this (https://www.winwickmum.co.uk/2014/05/basic-sock-pattern-and-tutorial.html) pattern.
The next step is to learn how to use/where to place markers.

I'm not having much luck with finding the right pattern for my slipper socks. They keep coming out much too wide in the leg despite the fact that my tension square was just right.

Just a heads up for those of you who struggle with Kitchener, I found this video helpful (https://www.craftsy.com/class/ins-outs-of-grafting-a-crafty-class-on-knitting-together/) for closing the toes on socks.

I find it difficult to graft sock toe ends because there aren't enough stitches to get into a rhythm. The pattern I use only has 8 stitches at the end ( 4 on each needle).
I put the stitches from each needle onto a separate piece of contrasting yarn and knot it and cut the main knitting yarn leaving a long enough piece to finish off. I turn the sock inside out, put the stitches back onto the 2 needles, then knit together one stitch from each needle and cast off.
You could probably put the stitches onto 2 small safety pins provided you can get them through the small hole to turn it inside out.

OK, hands up< I was sidetracked by a baby hat. This has now been abandonned die to far too many schoolgirl errors... I've knit it before, and it should have been a very quick knit, but nothing went right... The circular needles eventually decided it for me as they were constantly catching the yarn, and then an off-centre back seam was the decider.
So, Socks it is! I'm working towards the heel

@Celia DD absolutely loved the fit and the cushiness(?) of the soles.
Don't be afraid to go up an extra hook size for the braid. A bit annoyed with myself for not entering that detail. On the baby size I used a 4mm, the adult was either a 4.5 or a 5mm. I really can't remember. :headbang:

Started slipper sock 2 (well 3 or 4 if you count ones abandoned early on) Made good use of enforced stay-at-home afternoon and scaled my usual sock pattern for Aran weight yarn.
I have no qualms about resizing knitting patterns but have never attempted it with a sock before. We shall see what we shall see :[

I finished mine about a week ago and they've been sitting on the arm of the sofa waiting for me to sew the ends in - it took all of 5 minutes!
Here's the finished articles. I'm a one at a time knitter, I think I would lose the will to live if I knitted 2 at the same time. I'm not a great fan of self patterning yarns but this one seemed to work quite well. It's not a usual colour for me so I had to get a pair of red boots to wear with them ;) (that's my excuse anyway!)

I've knitted to the end of one sock and am happier with the fit that I obtained by doing mathematical jiggery-pokery with my usual pattern. I think I need about three more rows in the foot so I'm making the second one and, if that's satisfactory, I'll unpick the decreasing of the first one and add the rows in. Unfortunately I'd already cut off the yarn so will probably end up with a join in a rather annoying place.

I finished mine last night and was about to wash them when I saw a nasty looking decrease on the toe, I would have ignored it but I think it might rub when wearing them so have unpicked the toe, hopefully they will be finished today.

Mine are getting there - slowly! I 've had sore hands since re-covering my kitchen chairs last week - must but a new stapler...
Anyone else suffering with the nights drawing in? Not sure if it's the light, or my eyes, but finding both knitting and sewing harder than usual. I'm waiting for new specs so, we'll see...

i did start a sock..... got to the heel bit and this is where i always go wrong, started to divide it off and :boohoo: that's it :faints: i unpicked it all this afternoon, has enough of that palava so i done a search and found myself an Australian pattern for heel-less socks from WW2. Pattern said to knit on dpn size 3.75mm but the nearest i had was 3.25mm, anyway the tension looks ok :D

@Flobear Kitchener stitch is the work of the devil. I've tried it and it is more trouble than it is worth, imho. An alternative is to decrease to about the last 8 stitches (total, not per needle) then cut off the yarn (give yourself about 12") and thread that through the stitches a couple of times, pull it tight and sew in the end.

@Deafoldbat, I actually like Kitchener stitch :devil: But I do have to follow my written instructions and chant the mantra as I do it. And I always end up with a slight pointy bit at the end where I finish it.

I must say though that i don't particularly like the wool, it feels rather rough to me even though it's proper sock wool. I'm going to have a look and see what other wool i have upstairs and knit another pair but in something a little bit softer.

I enjoyed the pattern on this sock and will be looking for a new pattern for more socks to knit. I thought I was closer to matching the stripe on these socks but it didn't work out that way in the end. The left over yarn is now being knit into a doll's sweater so I can throw the tiny bits into the trash when it is done.
DDIL gave me 200 grams of yarn that is merino wool and silk to make DGS socks for this Xmas. Expensive yarn but she doesn't knit with sock yarn. He will love them as he is a yarn snob for his socks. Before they are cast on I have to crochet a coat for DD's cat.

Got mine finished this evening. I knew that the yellow would be tight but in the end the last round and a half of the last yellow stripe is a different yarn; slightly paler and a bit thicker but it hardly notices.
I could have done with a couple of stripes less as they aren't stretched at all on my feet, so hopefully they willshrink a tiny bit in the wash. Like all socks they will get tossed into the washing machine, though they have just had their first (and only) handwash. I love putting a newly finished piece of knitting into warm water and feeling the stitches relax and even out their tension.

Thanks @Celia I just made a stupid error after shaping the heel. I picked up the side stitches and knit across the stitch holder stitches, but somehow managed to drop three stitches from the stitch holder and messed up trying to correct this.
I might try again soon, but don’t tell anyone

I dug through my sock yarn to look at it as I need to use it up. I have enough yarn to make 4 pairs of socks. The rest will become sweaters and dresses for the dolls.
I will be starting the next pair of socks in November for DGS. Can't wait to start them as I've really love knitting socks and enjoyed this thread immensely.

I asked for 2 pairs of ChiaoGoo circular needles for my Xmas present this year. I want the ones with the longest cord on them. They will be for socks only. My other ones have a shorter cord and I can use them for other projects.

I've just found out that there's some new chunky yarn at the little shop in Tintern so may have to mosey along there for a look-see. One of the patterns I have in mind for slipper socks is chunky and I rarely use it so don't have a stash to use up.

This is the beginning of my next sock. I wanted a textured pattern because the yarn is plain coloured (slightly mottled with a very few black flecks)
I really don't love it and I think they will end up looking like bedsocks. I may well go back to the drawing board and go for something plainer like a rib.

@Ploshkin I'm knitting The Essential Cable socks which is a free downloadable pattern on LoveCrafts. It's all in stocking stitch apart from a single cable, knit across 6 stitches, down the outside. I knit these on circular needles.

I was a bit concerned about any potential Itchosity, particularly with my 'Orrible Psoriatic skin but Ive had them on for over half an hour and so far they are wonderful, not itchy at all and lovely and soft!

Yesterday I wore a new pair of mine made in this wool https://www.marrineryarns.com/knitting-yarns/marriner-cosy-toes-4-ply-sock-yarn-100g-91.asp they are lovely and soft, maybe a little thinner than some of the others but in a good way, ie fit in tighter shoes boots etc. the only downside is they don’t do any plain colours and I am into striped socks at the moment. :loveit:

Good afternoon all! We are back from the hospital in Bath - there for OH's CT scan. Very quiet and not many people about. Not sure if my brother is coming later on his way back from Cornwall. If he does I shall get a Chinese takeaway delivered this evening because I am Old Mother Hubbard until Tesco's come on Monday. I have just enough to scrape through tomorrow with.
Not sure what I shall do for the rest of the weekend - maybe wander from room to room and see what strikes me.

I picked up my knitting yesterday!! :dance: I have to say though, it was slow and painful, due to some over-enthusiastic pruning the other week. The middle finger on my right hand only bends half way, and is very painful.
However, I'm told that knitting is good physio so I'll carry on...

Well clearly I’m not going to do it within the timeframe of this knit along but you’ve all inspired me to have a go at knitting socks.
I did start a Craftsy course a while ago (knit socks: two at a time) with some totally inappropriate scrap yarn just to see if I could get my head around it and did get past the heel before giving up but I shall have a proper go now with sock yarn.
Off to browse sock yarns….

Wool arrived today for my next attempt at slipper socks which I would have started tonight, but one of the colours doesn't go. Laughing Hens, who allow free returns, kindly agreed to swap my two balls of that colour for a more boring colour that will go better.
I paid for a pattern :faints: and intend to make the zig-zaggy ones.

@b15erk, love your socks. I count rows all the time when I am knitting. I find it helps me when I do the pattern again as I have a reference of some sort. I have a book I keep that information in. But then again, I am strange when it comes to this kind of thing.

Although the socks I’ve knitted have been made with 4ply yarn, they are lovely and warm. I can still fit my shoes on, though.

It does depend very much on the footwear, obvs! I wear my 4 ply socks inside walking boots and similar and with, or instead of, slippers in the cold times of year. For closer fitting shoes I buy mine from sock shop as you can get soft-grip cuffs :)

I tend to use the lighter weight fingering yarns and yes I can wear them in my shoes, if they are a bit heavier I wear them in boots.
Might not wear this colour in this shoe but it was what I had on. :loveit:

I have just had to unpick the top 2 inches of what is luckily a toe up sock and re knit it as pusskins managed to grab it and pull a hole in it while it was waiting to be washed.

Well my first yarns have arrived (I’m hoping once I get the hang of it I will make several pairs) and I’ve split one into 2 balls so that’s a start I guess. I am now waiting for a circular knitting needle to arrive as despite having received a set of interchangeable needles for my birthday the set doesn’t quite go small enough with the needle tip sizes.
I’ve re-read through this thread and think I’d like to try the German short row technique for the heel for this first proper pair. The Craftsy class I started picked up stitches and that was OK but it would be nice to try another technique and see what I prefer.

@Turquoise I used German short rows for the first time on my socks and was very impressed.
I got a lovely, tidy heel with no gaps.
The technique seems odd when you start but works out very well.

I started my second pair on Saturday, before my eyes got too sore, but soon came to a grinding halt. I'd almost finished the toe, and was picking up stitches from the crochet cast on - and I think I lost a stitch!
I don't know if it's easier to unpick and start again, or just make another stitch, risking a hole... :facepalm: :boohoo:
Nothing going to be done today though, my eyes are too sore... :boohoo:

@b15erk I found that I'd dropped a stitch on a sock that I finished at the weekend. When I realised I just couldn't be bothered to unpick and it was in an awkward bit to pick up and bring it through to the row I was working on. I just put the errant stitch on a stitch holder, made a new one and when I'd finished I secured the dropped stitch to the others with a tapestry needle and wool, if that makes sense. I assume nobody feels a need to closely inspect my socks ><

I finished knitting a hat for DD and am working on a sweater for a doll. I hope to be back to knitting socks soon. I miss knitting them but do enjoy having a break from them to do other projects.

I recently finished a woolly hat for my Mum and made the same dicovery as you @coffeeandcake . I solved it in the same way! It's K1 P1 rib and in navy-blue - even I couldn't spot it afterwards ;)

If you search Debbie Bliss pompom hat @b15erk you should find a cable knit hat. I've knitted a few of these in Aran weight yarn and they're a nice straightforward knit.

It’s not a cable pattern but the Arteixan hat is a nice textured hat pattern and knits up very quickly @b15erk .
After the third attempt I’ve managed to make a good start on my socks. It took me a while to get used to the much smaller needles (my previous practice effort was using Aran scrap wool and larger needles) - I kept thinking I was somehow dropping stitches after the cast on but I think I’ve realised now that I was inadvertently pulling the end stitches too tight as I was arranging for taat magic loop and so had knitted two together by mistake. Hopefully I will improve my technique with practice.
I’ve completed the ribbing and am knitting the “leg” bit of the socks now.

I am back to knitting socks again. This time for DGS. The yarn is expensive as he is a yarn snob. I have the first one started but can't start the 2nd one until I unravel the mess the skein is in and wind it into a cake. I knew the skein was going to be the death of me when I undid it. It was a mess as the artisan had rushed putting it together. This is the 2nd one I have had to deal with from her. The first one was ready to go onto the swift and we had to bag it to get it home.
I will post more on this adventure as I will be taking pictures and introducing you to the yarn and socks. A simple pair that will be ribbed as this is DGS's favorite pattern.

This evening I knitted the second heel on the socks.
I had to unpick my first attempt at the first heel so I’m really pleased that I’ve now got them both done and I can move on to knitting the foot. The first part of the German short rows heel method went really well - it’s the second part that I have found more tricky and messed up the first time.

Recent perusal of round loom hat patterns revealed all sorts of sock tutorials on YouTube. :thinking: Both the finer sock looms, which are adjustable rectangles and I have one, as well as as chunkier slipper socks on the standard looms. Best surprise tutorial was for a heel using German short rows. Will peruse further..

@Celia, I had a lot of hanks of yarn but got all into cakes when I was cleaning up the yarn stash. These two came from DDIL as she thought she was going to learn how to knit socks. She isn't ready to right now as she can't focus on it due to work. She will get there one day.
The socks are coming along and the yarn is a delight to knit with. The yarn is from an artisan who dyes her own yarn. This blend is called Magical Mulberry and is 75% superwash merino and 25% silk. The color is called Storm Coming! which I am sure one of her customers named (I named one of her colorways). This yarn has no nylon in it but I'm not too worried. DGS only wears his socks at home in the evening and lots of times will wear them to bed. This yarn has no nylon in it but I'm not too worried. I am using 2.5mm needles with 72 stitches cast on. I am doing a 2x2 rib as DGS loves this pattern for his socks. They stay up well on him. I usually knit his socks on 3.25mm needles but I will knit him a finer gauged sock this time. When he was growing, I needed to be able to knit his socks quickly. I also did them on a larger needle as he is a type 1 diabetic and we were worried about socks being too tight on his legs. But he wears tighter socks than these so all is okay to knit a finer gauge.

I am sure these socks are going to knit quickly as I am monitoring a sick cat (bladder blockage) and alternate between cleaning house and knitting. Sewing is put on hold at the moment as I am staying upstairs with the cat.

At last the rest of the wool has arrived for my 'Hearthside slippers'. I had waited 12 days for the replacement for the unsuitable colour and two days ago decided phoning might be a good idea. My little parcel arrived today :thumbsup: I think the instructions will require some concentration - but I like a challenge :D

I wouldn't think the colour pattern is particularly tricky @Pearl but I've been knitting forever and am not the best judge.
I'm using Drops Nepal because the pattern suggests a thinner kind of chunky. I have knitted a tension square and will see how near it is when I've got good lighting to do the measuring.

Our cat has been under the weather for 5 days and I've done a lot of knitting while he has been in and out of the vet clinic with a bladder issue. The leg of the first sock is completed and the 2nd sock has 34 rows knit on it. I love knitting with this yarn and doing a K2P2 rib is easy to do. They also stay up on DGS's legs better.

@toileandtrouble, the stitch markers go in on every 10th row so I know how many rows I have knit. Nothing special happening on those rows. It is just plain ribbing all the way down to the heel flap. I learned this technique years ago from a knitting teacher and have used it ever since.

I am chugging away on the socks for DGS. The gussets are done and I have 8 rounds knit on the foot of the first sock.

I've removed the two markers for the heel while I was padding it under the foot. I now take the row markers out on the leg and use them to mark every 10 rounds on the foot. The goal is to finish them by the end of the month as I have another pair to knit before Christmas. I am enjoying sock knitting a lot.

They look like an interesting heel construction. I am at the moment knitting some fingerless gloves and some socks , I do often have two projects on the go as sometimes I need something a bit mindless.

I haven't properly started my Hearthside slippers yet. What with the delay getting the third colour then three goes at doing the tension square then my Dorset sister asking if I had had a chance to work out the pattern for the 'apple cosy' I've got a bit behind. Oh, and curtain-making.

@Celia, I now do the heel down to the end of the gusset as it is suppose to give more padding where they could wear out. I wait and see if it works or not.
I have 1.25" left to knit on the first sock's foot and then will be doing the 2nd sock. After that the toes and I'm done. Then on to DDIL's socks. Then knitting will be done for Xmas. I do have some sewing to do and I need to get some gifts bought. We have had a good rain storm hit yesterday and we are still under a rain warning. It has turned cool and I'm sure we will have flurries tonight.

I've finished my second pair of socks. I had been intending to do a lacy pattern but thought they were looking too much like bedsocks so went for a simple K6 P2 (on alternate rows) rib. Just because I'd never done it before I did Eye of Partridge stitch for the heel flap, which is just an offset slip stitch rib. I think it makes a slightly denser flap but I think that the usual slip stitch rib would have looked better with the rib pattern of the sock.
So, here they are and I think that's me socked out for this year. Thank you @Celia for starting this off and giving me a nudge.

I use 9” circular needles, @Lowena . I don’t think I could manage dpn and magic loop is a bit too faffy for me.

Even plain and purl are the same thing, just from the front and back. I always tell people that there is only one stitch in knitting and you do things with it :)

I've finally started on a Hearthside slipper - haven't got far, it's taking a bit of concentration. I just hope they're going to come out the right size!

I have the socks ready to start the toes. A couple of days and they will be done. The video is up ready for me to follow along as I do them.
When I learned how to do magic loop and using double pointed needles you will not believe how many times I took my first projects apart and started again. It was part of the learning process. I have learned a lot from some great sock knitters -- Purl Together and Lucy Neatby to name two. Purl Together has given me more confidence in knitting using the magic loop and Lucy Neatby knitting with 5 dpns. I never learned how to knit in the round properly until I was older and it was learn as you go. YouTube, Craftsy, and a few books.
I have one more pair of socks to knit before Christmas and then I will be done until mid January when I start knitting socks in worsted weight yarn. I'll be keeping this thread active.

Sorry I've been AWOL, but stuff intervened which meant I have been unable to pick up either knitting or sewing for several weeks. I had two weeks of infections which laid me low, and last week, the middle finger of my right hand was causing me so much pain, I could barely hold a pen, much less knitting needles.
This week, I feel so much better, but not sure I'll catch up with everything, so I will concentrate on what is possible.

I often knit little snowmen at this time of year as Christmas decorations. The charity I volunteered with in Dorset used to sell them in their shop. Also mini striped 'stockings' that were just the right size for two mini Green and Blacks choccies.

I got DGS's socks done and forgot to post them yesterday. Though the yarn is lovely, the finished product (as usual) looks ugly. As I rib his socks they are always long and skinny looking. As long as he likes them and wears them, he gets socks.

I have cast on DDIL's socks and have the first cuff knit and did part of a round on the 2nd cuff. I'm going to try something new with her socks -- Purl 2 Knit 4. They are mirrored socks which are always fun to knit.

Well, I've cast on for the first sock and done 6 rows.
I was inspired by winwickmum.co.uk on YouTube and then followed her tutorial on her website. It's so long since I knit socks that I'm like a beginner again.
It's not helped by not liking the sock wool I have but I'm too stingy to buy some other when this is ok just not my colours. (The socks are for hubby and he likes the colours so meh :\)
Don't wait with bated breath, this could take some time. ><

I'm on pair #4 now and have about 15 more rounds on sock #2 and I'll be doing the heel flap. These socks are fun as I am using up left over yarn and learning new techniques. I learned that I needed to knit the first row of the color change so the purl bumps don't show two colors. I also learned how to do jogless joins in the round.

I am making very slow progress with my Hearthside slippers. Having waited ages for the replacement colour yarn I finally got round to knitting one sole (had to concentrate) then, having picked up all the stitches in colour 2 for the upper, needed a 5mm crochet hook which I can't for the life of me find :facepalm: Mum has searched in her stuff too, to no avail, but luckily I found today that the local 'everything' shop had just two in stock and also a 3.25mm. Gone are the days when I could nip the mile and a quarter up the road to Hobbycraft!
Anyway, there might be something worth photographing soon :[

I forgot to introduce the yarn for the yellow and green socks. The wool is from Ancient Arts which is produced and dyed in Canada. The yarn is 80% merino wool and 20% nylon. The yarn comes from a line called Hat Trick named after hockey teams in Canada and the US. These yarns are semi solids to go with the painted yarn. The yellow is called Offside and the green is Hooking. I began knitting socks using this yarn as I was able to visit the store in person. It was there that I got the pattern I knit for DGS when he was only 6 years old.
I am following Purl Together as I love her method of knitting socks. I chose the pattern from a pattern I found online and counted the knits and purls to get the pattern.
Hopefully, I will have more pictures of the socks later this week.

Have already parked my socks and the boring plain men's socks to do a pair with loose cuffs for my friend with heart failure. Her poor legs are swollen and her hands so cold. I find if I have woollen socks on, it helps my circulation and I feel warmer all over. She says she has never had woollen socks. Anyhow, one done and the second started tonight. Picture later.

I have a bunch of Regia that I picked up for £1 a ball on hobby craft when they had a big clearance, many years ago. It does make pretty bombproof socks and is good for mindless knitting.
Also have some wollmeise 80/20 in colours I don't like close to my face. Found the petty harbour sock pattern which I shall probably cast on after a hat or two.

These are the socks for my friend. It is 6ply, I was going to make boot socks but this is more urgent, another chilly spell starting. The cuffs have to be really really loose. A continental cast on, 60 stitches 2x2 rib and larger needles. After the cuff I took it down to 48 stitches and smaller needles and went back to the pattern. The Regia 6ply pattern has a new (to me) heel, which was interesting and I've done a tapered toe end finished with Kitchener stitch. I have not sewn in the yarn ends yet, she can try this one on and it will be easier to undo - if I have to.

It’s fascinating reading about the different patterns and methods and seeing everyone’s socks.
I have to own up to some of it being a complete mystery to me. Last year I found some crochet sock patterns and I am tempted with those as I prefer crochet.

My sock is now 2" long!! I'm not a speedy knitter so this could take some time :P
However I got intrigued with the 'jogless join using the helical method' and watched some videos on that (I refer you to my 'Oooh Look, Shiny!!' confession). The chances of me ever doing striped socks (or striped anything!!) other than with striped wool is less than zero but I watched it and thought "I could do that"..... :S :embarrassed:

Not sure every part of my Kitchener stitch was right but they are stitched together now and very comfy and warm.

@Turquoise, your socks are lovely. Once you get the hang of the Kitchener stitch, you will fly away at doing them. I have a little saying to do it. When I put in the needle I say (front needle) purl, take off, knit, (back needle) knit, take off, purl. I don't do the usual first stitch like most say to do as I always had ears and Purl Together showed us this way and I'm hooked.
I'm ready to turn the heel on both socks tonight. Then change color to do the foot.

Latest in Hearthside slipper saga.
Started the upper, it takes a bit of following and I'm having to read it off the laptop screen as it wouldn't print out properly. Looks a bit crooked to me and I don't seem to have the right number of stitches down one side of the foot >< Decided to try it on and I think I really need the next size up <sigh>
In consequence, I have 'parked' the right foot and made a start on the left, one size larger.
Next winter, anyone? ;)

@toileandtrouble - the wool changes colour throughout and there is a pattern on the front side of the sock. It’s great because it’s very easy (every 4th row the front side is knitted as a 1:1 rib ) and gives a lovely textured effect.
The pattern is Mina Philips’s Pebble socks. The pattern uses The German short heel method and I found that a better method for me than the one I used on my practise version using Aran wool, where I picked up stitches.

Just to prove that I really am attempting to knit Hearthside slippers, here's one that, so far, seems to be working out. But I definitely can't do German short rows in the middle of a long round and watch the telly at the same time :S Trouble is, I have to look at the abbreviations Every Time I Knit a Row :faints: because there are several similar manoeuvres and I daren't get one wrong.
Colours are not that exciting. I chose them from sale stock online. The sole was going to be a shade of British racing green but it was much too turquoisey and looked ghastly with the denim blue.

Last pair of socks are done for this year. I haven't made socks for DDIL before so it was a bit of a guessing game. She has small feet so these are the trial and error pair.

DD calls them John Deere socks. They are a Canadian football team's colors but I do like John Deere colors also.

Aaaah! No! My empty bamboo dpn has just flown off into a pile of junk and I can't find it!! I'm halfway through the final foot on size 2.5 - can I just use one odd size three needle to finish off? Will it make much difference? Going to Amazon to order a new set but I'm running out of time.... :headbang:

Having said that, what are your favourite dpns for sock knitting? I use bamboo but wondered if others were better/different. I don't get on with circular needles so I'm just interested in dpns at the moment.

@realale I like bamboo as well. And beech. The wooden ones get a nice patina after you have handled them a while and the knitting slides along. I like them also because they are silent. It must be annoying to sit and watch TV with someone going click click all the time.

@realale, I have used Karbonz by Knitter's Pride when I knit socks on dpns. You can get them on Amazon. Pricey but the yarn doesn't slip off the needles. You can also get ChiaoGoo dpns also in metal and bamboo. I have knit with the bamboo circular needles and do like them. They are also pricey but not as pricey as the Karbonz. I have also knit with Knit Picks wooden needles and like them also.
I have quite the collection of Karbonz and Knit Picks along with an interchangeable set of Knitters Pride. I do use both dpns and circulars. I am now getting into ChiaoGoo needles as family wants to know what I want for Christmas. I like their cables better. But, I will knit with what I have and it allows me to have two socks on the go.
With the last socks I knit, I knit one on Knitters Pride and one on Knit Picks. I did like the Knitter's Pride needle better. They were smoother and had a nicer balance when I paid attention to the needles. Otherwise they didn't bother me in the least.
A top notch knitting teacher here in Nova Scotia knits on birch dpns and swears by them. A lady who lives near us knits with Signature dpns (https://signatureneedlearts.com/double-point-needles/). They are the luxury model of dpns. I knit a couple of rows using her needles and these needles are to die for and very expensive at $67.00 US for a set of dpns. These are the dpns I would get if I was going to knit a lot of socks on dpns.

My mum used to knit a lot but sadly she is no longer with us. (Quite emotional writing that even though she passed 25 years ago) Anyway, I have most of her knitting needles, which are the metal ones. I'm gradually buying new ones and opting for bamboo - mostly circulars as I find them very nice to knit with.

@Ellabella i can use both but definitely knit quicker with magic loop method. I have also used the 9inch circulars but they can give my hands cramp if I knit too much

I had a knitting friend who made me a few pairs, but they were all actual wool which I couldn't wear next to my skin, so I only wore them occasionally when it was really cold and I could have a thin pair of cotton or bamboo inside them.
Then after we moved OH found them and absolutely loves wearing them, and doesn't find the wool irritates his skin so a win. Always makes me smile seeing him in rainbow handknit socks.
(I am not a knitter, nor a crochet person but am in awe of those of you who can!)

@realale, those are beautiful socks. I never pay attention to whether socks match or not. Family wear them under pants so no one sees them. That being said, I've opted to buy yarn that is heathered as I like the look of it over stripe socks.
I'll be back to knitting socks in January as I have at least 6 pairs to knit in 2022.

Well, I blame you lot. It is all your fault - you have turned me into a sock knitter!!!
After finishing hubby's socks (which he loves and is extolling how comfortable they are) I dove straight in to start another pair.
And I ordered more sock wool. I went with @Celia recommendation of Marriners yarn and ordered two balls on Tuesday 21st evening thinking they would be here for the new year. Their site was warning of delivery delays and allowing a long time for delivery - they arrived on Friday 24th!!
I also got new dpns as my bamboo ones were bending.
I see more socks in my life and it's all your fault!!! :laughing:

Depends on the knitter. Pulling the loop through might, or might not, be quicker than changing needles.
I am definitely faster with DPNs but knitters who are uses to magic loop will be faster that way, and others prefer two sets of circulars (or even one set of very short circulars :ninja:) Try all methods to find what you like but don't be surprised if you end up sticking with the magic loop.

Finally have a pic of a finished Hearthside slipper! The sole is knitted for the right one but super-concentration needed for the shaping coming up.

OK, not finished in time for Christmas and I should have tugged that graft a little firmer at the start (hopefully that will smooth out in the wash) but all I need to do now is knit this one a mate.

I like using magic loop and circulars because I'm a loose knitter :o and every so often a dpn will slide out of a smallish item like a sock or a glove.

I've started on the second sock of my second pair. 20 rows in and already several mistakes but not ones massive enough for me to go back and rectify (I doubt anyone will notice once they are being worn!! :laughing:). First sock was okayish but I mucked up the kitchener stitch on the toes - I got distracted and forget what I was doing. Other than that I think I'm getting the hang of this sock knitting malarky!! :dance:

DD tried on her grey socks and they fit her perfectly. She going to wear them when she goes riding her horses.

I now can knit her more socks knowing this pattern works for her. She still has to try her other pair on for a fit.
Right now I am knitting her heavy socks to wear in her boots she wears to feed the horses. She loves these socks and wore out the 2 pair I made her several years ago.

I have finally got past the really difficult bit on Hearthside right slipper. German short rows on this pattern are difficult to follow because I have to keep checking what the abbreviations mean. Then if I make a mistake or think I have, I have to track back on all the rows one stitch at a time unlike normal knitting when you can often track downwards with the help of a spare needle or crochet hook.
Mind you, I mustn't get too blasé because I made a mistake on the chevron pattern with the left slipper when I wasn't concentrating on the grid pattern properly.

I went through a phase of making some elaborately patterned socks but soon realised it's pointless because I'm not the sort to wear thick socks with a skirt and silly shoes. I live in the northeast and wear them when it's baltic! Vanilla socks bore me so just a simple texture or lace pattern does the job.
The top half of my socks mostly lives under jeans or joggers and the toe lives inside a boot or crocs. So yes, you're right, unless Mary Janes and 50s swirly skirts are your thing, no one will see the mistakes!

That was quite a tour-de-force, and a challenge even though I'm a pretty experienced knitter. They are a little too large, pity I didn't stick with Med. the size I started with. They're OK if I wear other knitted socks inside them though I still feel there's too much space in the heel. If they weren't so complicated I would unpick and re-knit - but that ain't going to happen :D

I bought a small knitpro circular needle for this pair as I am having a lot of trouble with stitches falling off the DPNs when I turn the heel. It is a bit fiddly to use but I turned the heel at the first attempt so it's worth it!

Love the socks @Starryfish . I bought some West Yorkshire Spinners wool - seeing your pair is giving me the push to get a move on with it. I think I got as far as the ribbing but then put it down somewhere…but where? I’ve been on a tidying/reorganising crusade in my sewing room so keep temporarily losing things :D

@Starryfish i like wuss wool it is lovely to knit with and seems to wash well too.
I am now sockless again, I took my current stash of socks to my NDN yesterday, her two daughters where there, they are great dog walkers and loved them so I ended up giving them all away. So now I can start knitting again, all of the collection I had where knitted while I was trying different techniques so I am happy they have found new homes.
I love to keep a pair of socks on the needles even when I am knitting other things as I can knit away with having to think about it too much.

I haven’t really tried any one these, the wool from Marriner. https://www.marrineryarns.com/knitting-yarns/marriner-cosy-toes-4-ply-sock-yarn-100g-91.asp is lovely and does seem to be a bit finer to wear but it is still of course wool.
If anyone else has tried the cotton/ bamboo types please let us know.

Second sock thankfully finished :thumb: I did not enjoy knitting with this yarn. I didn't like the feel of it, the colour of it nor the way it knitted up - other than that it was fine!!! :laughing:
I thought I'd matched the 'stripes' but it turns out I hadn't. Oh well, they're finished which is the main thing. I'm going to do a pair for me now.

Me too, about the matching thing. It's much more interesting to me to see where the colour changes match up. You can really do your head in by starting the other sock from the other end of the yarn so the 'pattern' goes in the opposite direction :D
I have started a pair of straightforward socks because I needed something to do when Mr Bear invited me into his den to watch a film on his ridiculously large telly on Saturday night ;) Just about to turn the heel on the first one.

Oh wowzers on the woolie wellies and socks.
The heavy socks I'm knitting sit and wait as does the redo of DGS's one sock he got a hole in. I'm testing right now, very tired with SAD and am not sleeping well. Also I'm cleaning the house and it tuckers me out. One room left to clean and then I need to do a wipe down and start in the basement.
I will keep on knitting though even if it is items for the dolls.

Has anyone got a favourite heel pattern for socks knitted toe up.
I have a whole heap of disasters on the socks I am knitting now. I have knitted the heel about 4 times now and it is wrong see other thread https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,14132.0.html my friend I am knitting them for likes the toe up design best but not the garter stitch heel I have been knitting usually.
Any ideas will be welcome

I'm no help @Celia. I haven't knit toe up socks for at least 10 years and they were a disaster as I tried Cat Bordhi's tomato heel.
I unknit the heavy socks back to turning the heel and did the padded stitch down to the end of the gusset. I'm on the foot now and need to read the pattern to see what I need to do about the toe decreases. Blending 2 teacher's ideas together is a painful process. I spend most of the day fighting with the socks as nothing wanted to cooperate. I ended up knitting at least 2 rows of the heel flap again and all went well after that.

OK, that sentence worked so will add the detail that I used my original basic pattern and a patterning yarn so was able to rest my brain after my previous efforts.

If it's mostly straight knitting @realale , I can knit quite fast. Also an experienced knitter. The first pair of socks I made were of cotton yarn so I could wear them for trampolining at school. Can't remember if @Ploshkin knitted herself a pair. A pattern of my Mum's, I presume. She used to knit socks for soldiers in WW2 when she was at school!

My mother knit socks but I can't ever remember her using a pattern. She did jot down numbers on a scrappy piece of paper but what those related to I never did ask. She was an avid knitter until arthritis in her fingers slowed her down then stopped her. She missed it when she could no longer do it.
Well, I've got to the toe decrease on my sock so that's progress. :thumb: Thanks for all your encouragement everyone.

I spent a whole day exhausted and fought with a pair of heavy socks I'm knitting. Finally got the heel turned and the gusset knit to my satisfaction. Now on the foot. I may get this pair done before spring arrives otherwise they go into DD's gift box for this Christmas.
I could knit socks all day every day as the boys across the street are wearing DGS's old socks and love them. The pair the youngest had on are a bit small but he won't give them up as they don't have holes in them yet.

It takes me a fortnight to knit a sock. It takes me anything up to 10 years and counting to knit the other one!
I can relate to being slowed down by bad hands. I have HMS/EDS and joints I didn't know could hurt can hurt. A common problem for me is the saddle joints in my thumbs locking, so gripping needles is hard. Using magic loop for socks and the small movements required at that guage makes them easier for me to knit for longer but sometimes I end up going months without because it's too painful to make any meaningful progress.
It's one reason I went back to sewing but there's pain every step of the way there, too. Even tracing and cutting out a pattern can take me a few days. Leaning over a table hurts my back (forget cutting out on the floor!), scissors hurt my hands, then rotary cutters hurt my neck and hands. I fumble pins because my thumbs don't work....

I got the first heavy sock finished to grafting the toe. Talk about a marathon. I had to take it back to the heel flap 3 times and there is a tiny mistake still but it really won't affect the wear.

The yarn I used is not twisted and 100% washable wool. DD wears them in her winter boots. They do wear out as there is no nylon in them for durability. I am hoping the 2nd sock will knit up faster as I have another pair to make for her before I start, once again, on knitting socks made out of sock yarn.

The smurf socks are done and DD is excited to get them for next winter. She says her feet will stay warm at -40C. The cat did a great job of being a display board for me. He wasn't moving so I used him.

I followed a pattern from Lucy Neatby for the number of stitches and the toe but followed Purl Together's method of knitting them. Sock #1 of the next pair are cast on. They are called the Unicorn socks and the purple is lighter than in th picture.

The first sock the next pair are done. These went fast as I'm getting into the rhythm of knitting on 4mm needles after using 2.5 mm.

I was thinking about knitting a jumper next but after a couple of problems I am not in the mood so I think another pair of socks is going on the needles, I have cream and a dusky pink so I think it will look ok.

OK you all know I'm not a knitter as such but how can you lose a stitch without it being dropped?!!
I'm on the heel flap, 34 stitches, all correct on the slip knit row, I purl back but on the next slip knit row I only have 33 stitches. Confusedly look to find dropped stitch, isn't one. Undo last row looking for two stitches knitted together, nope, all correct. Spread out knitting and trace stitches up/down and all seems well. So where has the lost stitch gone?!!! :S ><
I gave up looking for it and just created an extra stitch to make it back up to 34.
I can only think I inadvertently purled two together at some point but I can't find where. There are some disadvantages with wearing red lenses whilst knitting and watching telly at the same time. :laughing:
On the plus side no one is going to be peering at my heel flap to see a misplaced stitch so all is well.
Chances of me finishing socks before March? Pretty dim.

There are dozens of different brands around, but I've learned from experience that whilst many of them are nice to knit with these are the two brands that stand up to being thrown into the washing machine over and over again. Many so-called machine washable yarns don't!
If you can't buy locally Wool Warehouse (https://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/) offers excellent service - but there are lots of other good online sources too.
Hand knitted 4 ply socks will usually fit inside shoes OK but DK/six ply really needs your shoes to be a size bigger than usual.

They are nice Ann, I feel the need to cast on socks but I am still knitting my jumper and have a hat in the pile next. I like to have 2 things going at once but 3 ? Maybe I have some lovely new sock yarn I will photograph and post later.

Thanks - the pattern was written for this particular yarn which does look great with a texture. They are nice and toasty for today's white fluffy stuff weather.

My husband loves the socks I knit for him and claims they are the most comfortable he's ever worn. Grandson's socks are in part a bit of a joke between us :P No other males are involved in this matter!! I have fleetingly thought of knitting socks for my son but as he takes a size 16 shoe I don't think I'll bother!! I'd be knitting for ever!! :laughing: :laughing:

The yarn is Marriner Cosy Toes in Fox. These will be for my grandson - at 13 it's anyone's guess if he'll ever wear them but they are part of light-hearted teasing that from now on, being male, all he'll get for birthday and Christmas will be socks, underpants or Lynx. :laughing:

It might not be winter any more, but I've cast on another pair. WYS signature 4 ply. Couldn't resist the shade of blue, even though I already have many, many balls and skeins of sock yarn. There's a little bit of halo so the twisted rib isn't as defined as it could be but the lace leaf motif will look lovely in it.

In the current Machine Knitting Monthly - May 2022 edition just out, there is a pattern for machine knitted socks - knitted circular and using King Cole Zig Zag machine washable hardwearing 4ply which is 75% Superwash Wool, 25% Nylon, or King Cole Footsie which is a 4 ply acrylic yan with added PBT to give strength and structure. The instructions are for Japanese machines.

@Elnnina that could be interesting, I have done them many years ago on the machine, think I still have my notes somewhere. The timing is just right as I seem to be into machine knitting again at the moment. Although I do love hand knitting them.

My socks get a few rounds knit now and then. DH's mental health is declining and I've had more thrust on me. I'm usually so tired at night knitting is the last thing I want to do. Once we get things caught up I want to get back at it. I have lots of socks to knit for Christmas presents. The yarn is in the containers waiting patiently for me.

I finally got back to knitting on the socks. DH has Alzheimer and I had to put away my knitting as I couldn't knit in the evenings. I was just to tired to do much of anything but watch movies or documentaries or play solitaire.
I picked knitting up again and have the gusset done on sock #2 that I started when back near the end of April. I'm in a better frame of mind, not having to chase DH around as his medication is better balanced. I decided I needed to start knitting again to relax at night and it is working. I'm hoping to have these socks done by the end of June.

Well done @Ann i find knitting helps me relax more than anything, there is rarely an evening I don’t knit. Not doing socks at the moment but I have just ordered some more sock wool so it won’t be long.

There’s nothing as warm as woollen knitted socks I find - by all accounts we’re going to need them this winter!

I made a couple of pairs of these SKYP socks over the winter and loved knitting them. They are just slightly more complicated than a simple rib sock but easy enough to knit while watching TV. It is also straightforward to increase the length and circumference if you need to.

I’ve spent most of the afternoon knitting. It’s been two steps forward, one step back and I’m not enjoying the circle socks, so I’m going to undo them and try @sleepingwolf ’s pattern instead.

I did find a nice stitch pattern that I want to use for a lace scarf so I am just doing a small bit of that so I remember, it is a swatch but a full width of scarf so I can continue if I like it.

I would love to join in here, but not sure that I'll have time. I only knit in the evening, and I have a cardi already on the needles from last winter... :rolleyes: Truthfully, the yarn is horrid to knit with, but I like the style of the cardigan... this is why I end up with UFO's.
I'm not a quick knitter, and soon go off the boil with a project if I hit a snag. The socks I have knit have been very well recieved though... :thinking:

There is no time limit @b15erk i usually only knit in the evening too unless I am machine knitting. Sometimes I like to have a simply project on the go if I have something that needs too much concentration.

Started mine tonight- always the trickiest bit, I find. I’m using Regia design line yarn and a very simple plain pattern . I tried to download the pattern suggested by @sleepingwolf on my Ravelry account, but kept getting an error, so I’ll just use my old pattern.. :D

I haven’t knit in so long. I’ve had quite the time here. I’ve been DH’s primary care provider with DS and DDIL helping when I couldn’t calm down DH from his dementia spells. Giving him new medications was hard on his body and brain so we were going through an adjustment period when he got sleeping pills. He had them for 3 nights and we had to put him in the hospital. He now has advanced Alzheimer’s.
Once I’ve rested up, I will get back to knitting socks. The pair I’m working on just need the foot and toe done on each sock and the will be done. I’ve looked at them but not tonight. I didn’t sleep well last night so am tired. But I will be joining you probably mid September.

Hello Ann, oh I feel for you living with someone with a brain illness is certainly not nice, and of course they themselves do not realise what is going on and thus it is hard for all the family to understand and to cope. At least he is now in a place where he will get care 24 hours a day thus releasing you and your family from doing everything for him.
Please take time to look after yourself, recharge your batteries so to speak and take things easy for a while.

DH is still not stabilized. He had a bad spell again Friday night and had to be sedated. That means he slept all of yesterday. And to me, that means he is declining mentally. I am not allowed to visit him yet which is hard on me. The police had to file domestic violence charges (automatic in Canada). The lawyer we got is trying to have the charges dismissed due to his mental health. I'm sure she will get a doctor's report plus the RCMP wrote a report in DH's favor.
I did look at my knitting last night but I was so tired that I kept falling asleep on the couch. But, I looked at it. I also turned on my sewing machine yesterday morning. Though I am cleaning the house of all the stuff I had no time to deal with, I find certain times of the day I'm bored. Those are the times I use to sew and knit. I'm trying to get back to doing some each day. I am going out today with family to work in the veggie boxes. We are keeping them up as this is what DH would have wanted. I will plant them next year as it is a part of our lives I wish to continue. By then I should have things sorted out in the house, my schedule figured out, and be ready to garden.

So sorry to read about this, Ann. We had experience of dementia with my late mother in law, so I know how hard it is to see such a change in someone you love. I hope that your husband gets good care where he is and that, in time, you can adjust to your new life. Thank you everyone, once again, for the kind words. I am trying to be kind to myself and am realizing as the days go on that we did the right thing last Monday. DH still has spells and has to be sedated but he is going longer between being sedated. I am hoping that means he is stabilizing. He had a severe decline in mental health.
I did get out the socks and knit 8 rounds. I stopped as my hands started to ache. I have to build up those muscles to be able to knit for a couple of hours at a time. But it was good having something to do while watching Netflix. I will try to do 8 more rounds tonight.

Firstly I'd like to send :hug: to Ann for all she has gone / is going through.
I need to dig out my 'woolly wellies' as OH described them last year. The first pair came out a little larger than I needed so I started another pair with the left over yarn. I also decided to make the yarn go further by using some in another colour to make a pattern on the top. I will probably have to re-learn how to knit the flippin' things as it was pretty challenging knitting the first pair.

Thank you everyone. A nurse was horrid to me when I called and it opened the wounds again. I’m filing a complaint to the hospital.
The weather has cooled off some and I’m hoping to start knitting again. We had a very humid summer this year. I’m enjoying not having th air conditioner on most of the time.

@Pearl , I actually make the cuffs slightly wider at 64 st , instead of 60 as I knit the socks a bit longer than suggested, so they come higher up my leg. I decrease the extra 4 st away when I start the stocking stitch. The cuffs are just knitted in double rib, knit 2 purl 2 all the way round and they turn out like that.

My socks are now finished, though I had to rip back the toe of the first one, as I realised that I’d decreased every row, instead of every second. As a result the toes are slightly different, but I’m sure no one would notice.
I have 2 more balls of sock wool in waiting, but first I have have jumpers for my granddaughters to do.

I got the socks ready to the toes. I need to knit across the front needle and then start the decreasing rows. Of course it couldn't happen as I had company Friday night and out for dinner last night. Once done, I will knit a couple of doll items and cast on another pair of socks. I'm behind in knitting but it's okay. This summer was so hot and humid I probably wouldn't have knit much anyways. The humidity makes me so tired and add to it looking after DH 24/7, I was exhausted.

Whilst watching the Queen's funeral I took my sock out of time out and had a few stern words with it. It behaved impeccably and allowed me to pick up the correct number of stitches, turn the heel and pick up the side heel stitches. I'm now ready to knit the gusset so a bit happier than last time. :)

Just think how much faster you'll be able knit 56 sts instead of 64 :thumb:

I got the pair of socks done Monday night. I have a doll's shawl on the needles now and will do a cardigan for a doll next. Then a pair of socks. Not sure when all this will get done as I'm busy with so many things to do right now and little interest in doing much of anything. It will get back to knitting once I'm not exhausted from the long list of things that needs to be done.

Me too, #celia . I started making the circles sock. I knitted for ages and it was growing so slowly. Then I unravelled it and started the SKYP sock, but it wasn't working for the yarn. So now it's the waffle rib sock.

Well I have finished the second black sock but got into a muddle with the kitchener stitch. Unpicked it -(and I really don't recommend unpicking kitchener stitch in black wool) then managed to mess-up again. Definitely wasn't going to do it again, so I checked all the stitches were secured and called it done. Who looks at toe ends anyway?

I started another pair of socks for DGS's Christmas gift. I yarn stash dived as I knew I only had 2 balls of the stripe. I found a ball of dark yarn for the heels and toes.

I started the first one, then started the 2nd one so they would look the same. I was impressed with myself as I had my 5th dose of covid vaccine on Friday and was recovering from the side effects. The 90 minute nap I had must have helped as it wasn't too hard to figure out.

As I was digging in the sock yarn bin, I have enough yarn for 3 more pairs of socks (DD) and enough yarn to knit a lot of doll clothes. I'm on a yarn diet and will plod on knitting what I have. I think it will be socks alternating with other items so I can use up the yarn I have. Good thing family members love hand knit socks.

My family like them too. DS told me his wife is wearing other socks with hers - to stop them wearing out. I made a couple of pairs at incredible speed when she had terrible chilblains. I didn't know I could knit that fast. Doctor said to get wool socks but it is impossible to find them for dainty little feet. I am just glad she likes them.

I'm plodding away on the socks. I got 10 more rounds done on each sock last night. At the rate I'm going, I could have the legs done by Friday night. it certainly helps pass the evenings.

As my back and knee were sore yesterday, I rested more. I did do some housework and sewed for over 2 hours. But I did a lot of knitting while having heat on my back and knee. By bedtime, I had 50 rounds knit on each sock. I have 35 rows left before starting the heel flap.

I too work both socks in tandem to keep the colour repeats even but I don't usually count the rows for the cuffs, I just work for 6 inches - the length of a DPN - before starting the heel flaps.

You are certainly keeping yourself busy @Ann. I am now thinking of knitting my sister socks for Christmas as she works in a charity shop, which can’t now afford much heating. There’s nothing as warm as hand knitted socks 😀

@Sheilago, evenings are really quiet now that I am alone so knitting helps pass the time. I do alternate between knitting doll clothes and socks so I don't get bored of doing the same thing over and over again.

I will have to pick up the gusset stitches during the day so I can see the stitches. Dark charcoal is a hard colour to work with at night and I will be happy when the second heel flap and turning the heel is done. I won't have to look at that yarn until I do the toes. I will be happy knitting the stripe yarn once again.

It was bright enough yesterday afternoon that I got the gusset stitches picked up and two rows done on each sock. I then worked on one sock until the gusset was done. I was so happy to be back using the striped yarn.

I will work on the 2nd sock tonight but doubt if I will get the gusset done. I have 28 more rounds to do on it which is a lot of knitting. I have a fair amount of work to do today as I'm feeling better. I had 3 days of being tired and sore from the flu shot. Usual for me but this time I pushed through doing thing each day. I find as long as the injection site is really sore, I will be under the weather.

Both of the gussets are done now and I've set the socks aside while I test a doll's sweater pattern for a designer who lives near me. I needed a break from the socks as I was stressing out about them. Once the sweater is done, I will get back at the socks. Each foot is 66 rounds and then the toe. It will be done in the dark grey yarn. The next pair of socks will be done in a light colour for sure. Easier to see when picking up the gusset stitches.

I sorted and tidied up my yarn bins today. I have to go tomorrow and get another skein of the grey yarn as I'm sure I won't have enough of it especially if I have to knit some of the foot in grey. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to buy yarn. What is left over, the dolls will get a sweater for winter.

I finished the first sock to the toe with the main yarn. I had about 9" left from the skein. I am still going to get an extra ball of yarn for the toes as I can use up the left over yarn for the dolls. They love sweaters that I knit. I will start on the 2nd sock in a couple of days as I have to finish up a doll's sweater next.

Beautiful socks @Ann . I love the look of ribbed socks, but don’t have the patience to knit them ( and I find rib a bit sore on the hands) . I’ve only ever used pre patterned special sock wool , but love your colour choices. :loveit:

I'm now ready to read a book and think about what I would like to knit next. Socks for DD are in the books for January. She loves the socks I made her last year and wears them in the winter to feed her horses and when riding. She fell in love with this pair but the yarn is discontinued.

In the spirit of encouragement, although I'm not sock knitting at the moment, I thought I'd show my wool stash.
As you can see, there's a lot of potential socks here, and I'm not buying any more yarn until some of this is worked :)
The dark red wool in the last photo is an unravelled jumper that my OH never wore. (Turns out it was the wrong colour!) So that will get made into something for me, a sleeveless jumper for layering perhaps, as there's enough yarn to do some nice textured pattern.

I keep each photo-ed lot in a plastic box, so there's four of them and they fit in my storage wall. But the knitting fairy hasn't found them in there, and I keep taking them out and they are still just balls of wool LOL

Do you all find that handmade socks are resilient? One of my feet seems to want to grow its own shoe (made out of hard skin), and I've never made socks because I'm convinced it would make holes in them straight away.

I'd say it depends what kind of yarn you use.
(You could also smooth away some of that hard skin and have a bit of pamper?)

I do, but it comes back - it's because I have no feeling in that heel as a result of a spinal injury.
What sort of yarn would be most hardwearing? I assume something with less (or no) wool, which would be good because I can't wear wool next to my skin (and my other foot would care!) Would cotton be good (if I could find anything suitable)?

Cotton on it's own wouldn't have enough elasticity. I did get a variety of sock yarns a few years back to try them out with a view to knitting some non wool socks. I haven't got round to trying them yet because other sock yarns keep enticing me. I'll dig them out in the morning and see what they are. I know one was bamboo.

Some wool types are more hardwearing than others, and then with a proportion of nylon I think. There may be breed charts to help?
Alpaca is hard wearing, and a bit less expensive than it used to be - you can get it in a mix as well I think.

Ooh - thank you. I'm currently knitting Mr Acorn a jumper in a wool/alpaca mix, and it seems lovely and soft, although I haven't actually had it next to skin other than my hands!

Alpaca socks are lovely and soft. I've knit them and bought them. DH swears by them as the best socks he's ever worn. He has horrible feet with the mankiest toenails known to humankind (sorry, tmi) but the socks have so far withstood his feet so perhaps give them a try.

Y feet are pretty hoof-like and the inexpensive 25% nylon sock yarns stand up to them pretty well.
It's the balls of my feet that wear out. I have collapsed arches so exert far too much pressure on that part of my foot. I till have the first socks I ever made, about 12-13 year ago, in Schoppel-wolle sock yarn. Regia socks don't seem to wear as well but I also wash them less carefully because I got a load for £1 a ball from hobby craft, a while back, so they get worn more frequently, each winter.

I really like the look of that yarn @Celia I don't know if alpaca is as hardwearing as goat (angora) but if it is it should be good. My first lot of goat / wool socks that I bought lasted me for at least 10 years being worn in wellies every winter and chucked in the washing machine and they were very warm.
I'm currently wearing a pair of hand knitted socks in a wool/ silk mixture. I knitted them last year and they too seem to be wearing and washing well.

I have been busy knitting socks. I made a pair of heavy socks for DD using up the last of the yarn I got her several years ago. I make them plain as she wears them in her winter riding boots.

@Ohsewsimple, I have knit 6 or 7 pairs following the designers formula and patterns or plain knitting or simple ribbing. This is the first time I took a pattern and added 8 extra stitches and figured out how to set up the design on my own. I did do some work on a sheet of paper before starting them and was worried until I realized that I had got it right. Then I relaxed and enjoyed knitting them.

@AllOfYouSockmakers Do you block your socks? I've just come across a range of wire or wooden blockers for hand knitted socks, or possibly, I think, for people who are fanatical about their ordinary socks looking neat... >< Anyway, I wondered whether/how you block your handmade socks.

Knit your socks, darn the ends in, dunk them in soapy water to allow the tension to even out, rinse, allow to dry then put them on your feet to block them. After that they just go into the washing machine - so I always use superwash with nylon yarn! Regia is the best and reasonably priced.
Here is the pair currently on the needles. Two leftover balls of yarn (which could be anything!) variagated green with a red stripe for the leg and foot, red with green flecks for the cuffs, heel and toes.

I do like the idea of blocking but have not found it necessary, the pair I finished a couple of weeks ago were all washed and I was going to steam them for the person they were a present for, she saw them and before I knew it they were on her feet.
It was a cold day and she loves my socks as she says they are the only thing that keeps her feet warm.

Just to say I've finished the first sock, and I would recommend the pattern. It's well-written, the instructions for the pattern section come as both words or a chart, depending on how you like to work, and the sock is fairly quick to knit up but looks like you've made an effort to be fancy :)
Can come out a bit long, check your measurements whilst still in the 'pattern' section, just in case.
My only point; I always use 2 stitch markers once I'm past the heel turn. I put them in as I pick up and knit the gusset stitches, and it helps keep the rest of the sock on track. She uses just one, in mid-heel, to mark the passing of the rounds, and I would get lost on my decreasing and pattern placement if I did that. But that's just a personal thing.

Still works out nicely if you use 5 needles, not 4.

I too prefer DPNs and that generally means that markers are not needed if the stitches are arranged properly - ie change of needle at either side and mid sole.
I always use two sets of needles and make sure that each section is completed on both socks before moving on to the next section, that way I'm more likely to get two socks the same and no singletons!

I use DPNs but I move the stitches round by 1 stitch each time I come to the end of a row, otherwise I get long straight lines of slightly baggy stitches :)
I often knit 2 at the same time, but for this one I have only pair of DPNs that size, and the yarn was in 1 large ball, so I just lazily did one first and now the other.

Finished - and went right to the end with the green yarn, only a few inches of it left.
Now to dunk them into warm soapy water - you can almost hear the stitches relaxing as the tension evens out. After that they'll just go in the washing machine.

@Acorn, I don't but have seen wooden sock blockers that are used to block them. My family likes them unblocked so why do the extra step when it isn't necessary. If I was putting them into a competition I would block them.
My mom had a set or two of wire sock stretchers (as she called them) and she use to stretch my dad's wool socks on them after washing them. I wish she hadn't got rid of them as they would be collector's items today.

Not sure when we are going to start a Spring Sock thread, but my next pair are being knitted in a couple of 4 ply natural yarns, with yarn bought from the farm.
The place is called Fernhill Farm, in Somerset, and we were there a few years ago for a shearing day. I asked about spun yarn, and I came away with 50g of Shetland in pale brown and 50 g of ShetlandxRomney in cream. She didn't have any more at that time, so I got what there was.
Now I've looked them up this morning, and it' a bit more about fibre for spinning yourself - some wonderful fleece choices but I'm not a spinner. They say they have some yarn, but I'm not sure how much is currently in stock.

The socks will be stripes (kind of obvious I suppose) one will start off with a cream top, then have brown stripes added, a brown heel, and stripes to the cream toe - the other one the opposite way round. There will be a photo eventually.
It's passing the time nicely whist I watch the rain, and stare at the stuck sewing machine and wait or WD40 to work it's magic. Fingers crossed!

I can't even wear woollen socks all the way through winter, @LeilaMay! On past progress, I need to start in Spring to have them ready for the end of the next winter, though!

Pure wool like that is good for a sweater that only needs occasional washing by hand but for socks that get thrown into the washing machine after every wearing it has to be super wash with a bit of nylon for added strength. Even so not all super wash wool is created equal and I have had some that shrinks after a few washes.
Regia and Opal are the brand leaders, and for good reason! I don't buy anything else for socks now.

@LeilaMay as long as you don’t mind hand washing the socks or if you have a machine like mine that hand washes better than I can they will be fine, I have machine washed loads of things I shouldn’t. If you are heavy on the wear they might wear out more easily but that’s what darning is for :laughing:
I will try to change this thread name to Spring as I am still definitely knitting socks, sometimes I forget to post pictures as they usually disappear as soon as they are finished.

I was thinking about some sock knitting yesterday. I think I'll look for a new pattern though as I'm a bit bored with the one I normally use. I'm just sewing together a sweater that I've knitted for DGS. I also want to knit a couple of fair isle hats.

That’s what I used for my first ever pair.
Does anyone have a good pattern for a stretchy cast on and rib? Mine goes a bit saggy after a couple of washes.

I’ve been thinking DH would benefit from home made wool socks as his feet and hands get very cold.
I’m not much of a knitter. I’ve considered making crochet socks for me as I’d prefer to crochet. But knitted ones would be better for men I assume.
I’d need a very easy pattern and advice on needles, or could I use a circular somehow?

I use 2.5 long circulars and knit with magic loop usually but I started originally using double points and have also used the small 9 inch circular. Everyone probably has their own favourites

I will be joining in after I finish my vest. We had temps up to 25C this past week making it difficult to knit anything. Anyways, I need to make DGS, DD, and DDIL each a pair of socks this winter. I will have to buy DDIL's yarn as she want the yarn to be silk like the last pair I knit for her.

Knitted socks are generally more stretchy and therefore more comfortable to wear, so better for men and for women. Also crochet fabric will be thicker and could be a problem fitting inside shoes. Unless you are making socks to go inside oversized winter boots don't use anything thicker than 4 ply.
The basic pattern from Winwick mum is a classic flap and gusset pattern, which for many people really does fit better than the short row heels. Commercial socks are nearly always short row designs simply because its very difficult to pick up stitches along the side of a gusset when using a machine.
My first socks were knitted from the pattern printed inside the label of a ball of Opal sock wool which is almost certainly this one. (https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/p/simple-sock-gift-pouch-in-opal-schafpate-4-ply) and is very similar to the Winwick Mum's pattern except that it tells you to use double pointed needles whereas WM says use short circular, magic loop or dpns and assumes you know the difference. For a beginner it's best if the pattern tells you which to use.
In the end it's becomes personal preference whether you use:
One very short circular needle.
Two longer circular needles.
One very long circular needle with a loop (magic or travelling).
Four double pointed needles.
Five double pointed needles.
Personally I find the very short circulars difficult to handle, I don't like the dangling ends with two sets of circulars and I find pulling stitches through a loop a faff (and possibly damaging to the yarn). I much prefer DPNs, but only four of them (3+1). For me 4+1 needles let the work flop around more and so more possibility of stitches slipping off. But as I said, it's personal preference and you need to have tried all methods to know what suits you.
WM pattern uses heel stitch for the flap (which is standard and creates a slightly thicker fabric at the back of the heel which is oftern where socks wear. The Opal pattern has you do regular stocking stitch, one row knit, one row purl, for the flap.
Both of these patterns use 2.5mm needles and a cast on of 60 stitches. With experience I find that 2.25mm needles and a cast on of 64 sts works better (for my very average size 5.5 feet) and it's also better if you work some sort of ribbing on the leg and top of the foot.
The main thing to remember as a beginner sock knitter is that you must make a very stretchy cast on. If you don't you won't be able to get the sock onto your foot!
A lot of patterns suggest casting on with a bigger needle, but really it's the extra yarn between the stitches that makes a cast on stretchy, not the size of the stitches.
My default cast on for any knitting is the long tail thumb method and with practice I can make it very loose. Each stitch goes onto the needle and the tail is pulled just enough to take up any slack but absolutely no tension in the yarn around the needle or before the next stitch. It might look a bit loose and floppy in the makiing but it doesn't in the finished work.

I have stalled on my vest as I have been tired in the evenings. I am pushing myself hard to get strong so am doing yoga in the mornings and walking most afternoons. With my right knee and hip bone on bone arthritis, I need to strengthen the muscles a lot. I push myself hard to walk 1.6 km at a quick pace using walking poles. Both are tired today as I walked 1.5 km on cement floors yesterday. I am going to push myself to knit every night so this project gets done. I will wind the skein and put them out in sight to remind myself I need to get cracking on the vest.

I have the 2nd sock started and got 25 rounds knit yesterday as we had a power outage due to the storm that was passing through. I hope to knit a lot every night so I can get it done. I have a lot of socks to knit this winter. Requests are coming in from family for new socks. I love that they enjoy wearing them.

Sooooo I have decided not to jump straight in as I know there are going to be problems before I start. I have downloaded the pattern from Winwick mum site. But I can already see there will be a problem with fitting. DH has a high instep and socks are a problem to get on normally. I have chunky calves and even lower legs. I do not get where she says most people’s leg width is the same as the measurement round the foot. Really? ::thinks::
I can find no useful info about this apart from ‘you might have to increase /decrease to account for this' depending on which way you knit the socks. But I’m not a great knitter and this is no use to me. I need a video showing very simply how to do this.
Anyone got any thoughts? Can’t start doing anything till I sort this out in my mind. It’s really bugging me. I’m so used to dressmaking being a challenge with all the alterations I have to make to a bought pattern that I very rarely use them and prefer my own. I now find socks are going to be a problem. :rolleyes: It’s a wonder I bother with anything sometimes. :(

@Ohsewsimple if you give us the desired width of the legs and the feet, we can probably do the calculations for you. High instep should not be a problem because hand knitted socks stretch more than bought ones. The circumference of the foot is the same, just in a different place.

Thanks @toileandtrouble. I’ve actually looked at a pattern for knee length socks and that gives various widths and I might be able to use that as a guide. I think I’ll start and see what happens. If it goes wrong I'll just have to undo it all in a huff and go and sew. That’s where I'm more comfortable. :)

Having had poor results with 'average size' I got this book. Lots of explanation on fitting, and knitting top down or toe up, and some patterns, though having tried some out (quite successfully) I now stick to plain style and let variegated yarn provide the patterning (Opal or Regia yarns come out well)

Thank you @Deafoldbat that looks a very interesting book. I will keep that in mind. I have managed to read a good sample and she says exactly what I’ve been thinking. Straight socks don’t really work here! As someone who has never had shop bought clothes fit I’m wary of anything unless I’ve done a lot of research. Hat patterns are another thing that have to be modified. So I’m not surprised that ordinary sock patterns won’t fit me!

@Ohsewsimple, these are real challenges. How many stitches are you to cast on for the sock? What size needle are you knitting with? I use to knit DGS's socks on 3.25 mm needles when he was younger but now use smaller needles (2.5 mm I think). The first pair will be the challenge so I would keep the pattern simple. When I started knitting socks again I followed this series (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTAGW1JQV9o&t=38s) as I like the lady. I still watch them to make sure I am doing the heel flap, turn the heel, gusset and toes correctly. I also keep track of what I do in a book so I can refer back to how many rows I knit for each part and where I should change them for a better fit. I knit socks for 3 people.
When I knit the Hermoine's socks I wrote the pattern in my book so I could follow it easily. I sometimes knit along with the video stopping it so I could catch up. It was a great pair of socks the DD still wears in the winter. I then did this sock (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uewyVE7rkEc&t=3s) which had a harder pattern to follow but was stunning when done. I like this person as she talks about how to do adjustments. She also does certain things that she tells you don't have to do.

I did a simple K2 P2 ribbing on these as they stretch nicely on his legs. I chose this colour as it was what I had in the yarn stash and fit a male. I want these done by the end of the month as I have more socks to knit plus a hat and a vest. I do keep busy knitting most nights.

I know this isn’t the correct way but I would suggest you make a pair of socks to the approximate size just for the experience…… it’s much easier to adjust a pattern when you know how you actually knit and the effect that is going to make on the pattern. I often do this and usually find a willing recipient for the first ones.
If you use something like Drops Fabel it is not too expensive a lesion too.

I haven't done much knitting for a while but I know that I can get three socks from a 100gm ball of four ply and back in the autumn I bought two balls and made a blue pair, a pink pair and a blue and pink pair - or so I thought. A couple of times I looked in the sock drawer for the pink pair but couldn't find them. Yesterday I was getting my stuff together for craft club and looked in the knitting bag and guess what I found? The pink pair are not finished so of course they wouldn't be in the drawer.

It’s never crossed my mind to try but I’ve just seen a pattern. I’ve some DK that needs using and I really need a couple of pairs of warm socks and no real time to make them. Crochet would be much quicker than knitting.

I’ve thought about it @Ellabella because crochet is easier for me and a lot quicker. I’ve got a few crochet sock patterns I’ve downloaded. And I doubt I’d wear any socks I made outside anyway! Just to keep warm indoors.

Using the same yarn and similar size hook or needles; the crochet fabric will be thicker and less stretchy than the knitted fabric, so probably better for slipper socks rather than wearing inside shoes socks.

I am not missing but have been busy. I have had so many appointments that my head was spinning. I am back to one or two a week so life has settled down for me.
I got yarn out of the stash to make DD a pair of socks to go with a hat I made her. She loves the coppery colour of the yarn. I used a new pattern rather than make the usual K2P2 or a pattern I have already done. This one is K6P2 and it allows the colours of the yarn to show up vs a pattern.

I am going to start another pair of socks for DDIL tonight. I had a break and knit 2 hats to use up yarn that DD sent me at Christmas. The 4 balls of yarn she sent are now knit up. Two hats for her, 1 for DDIL and 1 for me.

Well after what seems forever I have finally finished a pair of socks for DH. They aren’t great and they were a PITA to do. But they might keep DH's feet warm.
I used Winwickmum's site but found it awkward. I need specific instructions and found hers were a bit woolly (no pun intended) unless making the one size in her pattern.
I bought the kindle version of the book that @Deafoldbat recommended. So I will give another pattern a go sometime. But back to my comfort zone and sewing first I think. :)
