I have my lovely new Janome 6700 and am trying some of the lovely stitches on quilting fabric on the iron on wading to make a bag and I don’t know which needle to use. Normally I would just pick a normal 80 but I have Janome needles Blue tip red tip etc and wondered what everyone else uses.
Don’t want to post this on the quilting board as I might get caught creeping into the dark side

When quilting I always use schmetz quilting needles!
-
Schmetz quilting needles for me too :)
-
Wish I could advise. My Brother is happy with Schmetz, either quilting or universal. Always good results.
-
There's quilting needles? :scream:
A year ago a needle was a needle. :o

i have the same machine as you, and I too use Schmetz needles, but I tend to use Microtex needles for most things (apart from sewing with metallic thread).
I have found the Janome needles have a coloured coating on them (hence the red, blue purple colour coding) and, I know this sounds daft, but I have found that the coloured coating wears off, and the needle then drops out when sewing! The coating is thick enough to make a difference- or so it seems, and as I have had two Janome needles drop into the feed dogs and cause an almighty jam, I will not use them again!
I have used Schmetz needles in a variety of machines with never, ever any trouble. I do know that some Janome users prefer Organ needles, but I stick to what I know works!

There's quite a few different types of needles

THE HORROR!!! :scream:
@Bill :S a little birdie tells me you've been over in the darkside all day today ;) so it can't be that bad
-
I was lured in @Diane and there's no escape. It's like Hotel California. :P

Ok I think I will stick to what I know, I usually use schmetz needles and know where I am with those, just didnwant to make a mistake, my other Janome which is the straight stitch uses a special needle that is super expensive
donttell anyone but I use ordinary schmetz needles in that too
Thank you everyone, I am sliding off before the dark side snaffles me

I don't quilt @Celia but have a Janome machine and I use the blue tip for most things that I sew. Try an ordinary one to see if it works out.
Strange thing happened though when I used a Blue tip on my 1989 Brother 3 thread overlocker which takes any normal needles. I broke 2 in swift succession and I can count on one hand with fingers to spare the number of needles I've ever broken on that machine!

Schmetz quilting needles are shorter sharps so easier to quilt with. Love them

If they are standard sewing machine needles, 130/705 they aren't shorter; if they were the machine wouldn't stitch with them.
Machine needles come in different thicknesses, with different points, with different eyes and with different finishes but if they are the same system (130/705 is the standard for domestic machines) they are the same length.

@Bill , You aren't alone in just learning as you go. At one of the late night sewing sessions I used to attend there was a new lady sewing on a very pricey machine, like the $2,000 USD range, making a racket and skipping stitches. Someone asked when she last changed the needle. Answer was "you have to change them?" The room went :faints:. She then got a little group tutorial which included to read her manual which she had never done either. The salesperson had shown her how to plug in the foot pedal, put the ¼ inch foot on and sew a straight seam. This was like her 7th or 8th quilt. The fabric rose up or down with each stitch.
On their website Schmetz (https://schmetzneedles.com/) has great information about needles on their resources page. They also have a needle selector app available.
While you're at it read your manual. It gives you pairings of fabric, needle type and size as well as thread weight recommendations.

I always use Janome red/blue/purple tipped needles ... not because im any kind of goodie goodie but because I know what they're for ... other needles apparently have writing on the top of the needles telling you the ???
but with my eyes???? (https://youtu.be/oW0GK2bVqI0)
Go on  ... you know you want to ?????

Mine definitely seem shorter
-
They shrink if they get wet.

Interesting I am going to just go with Scmetz needles as I know what I am doing with them but usually I would use an 80 for a medium weight all purpose type needle and I notice that Janome recommends 90s.
What do you all use, I use 80 for general sewing on medium weight in my sewing machine but 90s in my overlocker
I do agree @Iminei i wish they were all colour coded
-
70/10 and /or 80/12 ( mostly the latter)
-
80/12 is my default size for most things including P&Q weight cottons. Occasionally 70/10 if it's something really thin and flimsy and 90/14 for furnishing weights and nearly always the regular/sharp tip. I seldom bother with ballpoint or stretch tips, mainly because I use the overlocker whenever I'm sewing jersey, it's only an occasional dart that needs the regular machine.
One tip though, if you find threading the needle difficult try using an embroidery needle, the eye is longer and therefore easier to get the end of the threads through.

@Bill - have a look at THIS (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,5308.0.html)old thread.
Edit: sorry that link doesn't seem to work, but it's the top one in Haberdashery.
Ive poked the relevant goblin and got it to shine up the linky :D Imi xxx

80 for medium weight, 90 for heavy weight, 70 for lightweight like viscose. Any problem fabric and I’ll use a microtex.
-
Most of my needles have colours at the top so that you can see what they are :) Not that I can remember them though :\
-
Like Brenda P I mainly use Schmetz 80/12 System 130/705H on both my sewing machine and overlocker but my coverstitch uses System ELx705. I do have a selection of specialist needles but only use them if really necessary.
-
I use Schmetz standard and leather needles which are coloured. Couldn't tell you which colour is what needle though so I have to look at the little case they're supplied in which clearly labels them. Which ever one is missing is the one in the machine.
My Organ denim & stretch needles are also coloured but it's the same story there too.
Regardless of what I'm sewing through, I'll try to use the smallest needle I can get away with. I've broke enough to have a rough idea where those limits lie.
