Title: The Village
Post by: Iminei on March 12, 2018, 19:32:08 PM
So todays efforts were painstaking but when I finally stood back I seemed to have lost all sense of scale ...

Just add a note on the bottom saying "not to scale"

I like it.  I think I would add a few more quirky miniatures here and there.

What size is the proposed finished product Im? I reckon it's fine and adds whimsy to it; sort of like "Gullivers' Travels". If there are other blocks to be added I would even consider running with the theme and continuing with the "out of scale" idea.

This is the project as it is this morning ... its just over a metre square.
Im going to add slim borders to the side to take the binding but the blocks are all there.

Just think of the size of a bench/seats compared to the size of a house, not really too small.

What a nice quilt!!!!  0_0

I would leave it as it is. A quilt doesn't need to be perfect.

Btw: If the top is 1x1m,.... how small are the appliques??? :S *wow*
Title: Re: I seem to have lost all sense of scale ..
Post by: Iminei on March 13, 2018, 18:57:34 PM
The bench is history ...

if the gnomes want a seat they will need to find a toadstool and fight it out with the pixies.

@Sakar  .. the individual blocks are 2 1/2" x whatever .... so quite teeny ...The bench is now 1 1/2" x 1" tall.

I have replaced it with a nice new one from Haskins garden centre.

Nothing teensy teensy ... the blocks were cut from 3" strips so are 2 1/2" finished

No cars, roads etc ... I have made some fencing and an open gate but dont know quite which home would have it ...

But which house ? (obvs not one with windows, doors and a kiddie bike in the garden!)

Can you tell I never work to a plan?! :)

The yellow one with the brown roof on the right hand side has room for a steeple and a graveyard.  :)

Might one of your villagers have a (simplified!) formal knot garden?...a beehive?...garden archway thingy which climbers ramble over?

Love the idea of a chapel/church with gravestones.

I too thought of a Church and as these would traditionally be set at the "top" of the village you could use the Lilac(?) one with the tree (toppish leftish), with what appears to be a blackish roof (PDs).
Maybe a post box or Post Office???  -<

Lovely ideas but the village is made, so ideas must fit in ...

I'm going to try and adapt the top lilac with polka dot roof into a church ...

as the Greeks believe, Church's are always as close to God as you can get them and this one has lots of sky to fill.
I might get a pub out of one of the 'vacant' houses ... and a natural pond, maybe in the scrappy land at the bottom of the quilt ....

mmnnn I think its Village life for me today then !!!

Must admit I like the idea of something Very Bad happening somewhere - so that at first glance it looks idyllic but closer inspection reveals that all is not as it seems!! (touch of the Midsomer Murders?)

If you ever go into St David's cathedral in Pembrokeshire you will come out understanding that your  church is a model of perpendicularity.

The arches inside St David's are enough to make you feel quite queasy.

I love St David's - the city and the cathedral. If you put a marble on the floor in one corner if the cathedral I think it would roll diagonally to  the other corner!  :D

Oooh, yes.  A nice little village school like this one at which I used to teach in Devon.  It would need to be close to the church as village schools are often church schools.

I have some llama fabric.  A field of llamas would be great but I think you'd have a problem with scale.

It doesn't have a pub or a Post Office. Maybe a little bridge over a river and if you're feeling particularly ambitious, a mill with a wheel beside aforementioned river.
It hasn't a chippie or a butcher's shop or a greengrocer. A window cleaner in a van and a pharmacy might be useful. A police station, a train station, some road signs to interesting places. A town hall. Has someone said cuddly toy already???  :)

Progress is being made Ladies (and Germs, if there are any in here)

I have discovered that Elvis can do very wee lettering as well as large  0_0 but that does make my attempt at the pubs sign look rubbish, so now, as well as having unpicked and re made the porch of the pub, I am thinking about the sign and how I can possibly ...ahem ... alter ... it!!

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/NKTcTe3sUYssNyZ_dg_uESASFASVFS4sZRqdmnjNENjQ-Bnn03PhygCO8aL5uT8ONGZsWqyEUuLzsV8c6LtlasFPjhZcI44FvojK9GbbEDqn16-P9TF79Nl4Djp7tDeqoRoiRXHKdHNXSfcZNg7bptvSqk5aN1_s3hwvIaArjYbsOAIMxIitVl5ug90vQFbTNpLf0ugH_pGVf38FJ7J3L1DrbZJKP_bGzhDWp3bBRZ5dqBRTshxyraBLXRfYd14u7t07HwtTDLmMDnyxDz3LSAYHv8uKawbW30kFcOHKlQjjzrnu-wBubQ-I79zyts73fUYFsSESbCzxof-37AGwfaD5zFo6gFzjU2GwGax4VpjEXy3JGKTQyI4eBFZxk-atbtybrcvd3HxWNcB1QnyuSmjUWZoV52F2OquiRksqjpV8AhbJKqh4k1x7QVQcZgrpr3I-g2tQnIqAMW3exf_MPy0fEF7IZ11GcdbUNiAmM-cN2Tm8ilG6YGHw2A1IrZhtHK4CroZdld-QZLCL3Rcur06VAXDmnliTmYGliFUEO7TJ0i6yItNxghqmodGtNZRe1WZuLFZ4EhAf8HwML7tmr43l9OwNtxWdaqC8bgkQHqAzrbpKSGlfJL4tCbY5hxa_K2bnylijM9Kqh8M3SvhbY1H9Lww=w1012-h755-no)

Unpicking wont be an option with all that satin stitch going on so I'll have to put my thinking cap on.
I need to buckle down as the entry forms need to be in by June 1st and I want the top 99% complete by then.

As you can see its grown a little (I blame the warm weather)

I don't see what's wrong with the pub sign...? It's on such a small scale, it isn't screaming, 'Look at me!', and looking out of place.

It's looking good...and I love the added farm. Great polytunnels  0_0 .  I was trying to think of the significance...if any...of the farms name.
Ah! Yes. I've got it.  <3

Okay so I have continued adding to the village. I have completed another house, appliqued over changed the postbox and am much happier with it, just the slot to add now but further on, on Monday I had a bit of a meltdown  :\

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/5M4JYToY1hnQSLUMl32QMjXw0x4HmpB0JMp4NCCnUQaMpRJOHpNXi6YnOx9ZIb8omh07U8iscTz4Fv9zbgN28VBAD2axIvLUTwHF-0qo1mteG9IbYBTIuygPs1ZCZga4WMrQZbXHUj9WGlou6UAO7Y5JTdPbHCgaJr9i5rB85BdQYux_5d1Y6Pyj6LHdbTFBncfMxP-LhulEWLaI9fot2P1iQRJYHhw74YP4-VTU4Eu7x008dfLc6GqnGV7WIuljnE15gbh92FbEwUaDr5__usJ3x-ZKZw9NhtCG3STv5-tcHS1RbV_jWYg3q5TJNt2lE-CBt_QMi_I_EZaKHcDmPmUM3rWTz1iGmonTykZD97Y17oXsJqJ5VSFedXI-jLmZKnnnmsgD63-UXsl5Pmw_F4vXOB3t3Y3kFnhNjOflHsjrb8d2i_tFpmcQItmFHczLiajhQLhwog_6hPnXfyChYD3Sv6fq2kOyCkarcAv0dcYGw2e6kHmnS-2VetpyGEYrCmNetsQGpPjzsLWkDaD63uSKNSEKIv49tJH0K0qRkTOYA27vGySZHW7ptQX55p1a4oeI0M9lP-zesq0p3YwbqwR_2c60EtOHhqpTMSi99NyqMM2Og-F9Buoe4QefkIbcJvgF2jlax3kwYSjr__GsMctxC-c=w1032-h770-no)

I'm obviously much tireder than I realise (and the fact I've been sleeping so well sort of backs this up) and after some pretty intense additions to the village I screwed something up...

Quite an important something actually.

Imself came into the house from sunbathing on the deck to find me bashing the iron on the ironing board, cursing like a navvie and (I'm so ashamed to say this) ripping the quilt  :( To be fair it was the square(s) that the iron had just melted through, so they would have had to come out at some point, but maybe just not then, or in that manner  ><

He pulled me away and ran upstairs with it .... then sat me down with a glass of wine. He was brilliant!

The next day I came back to it refreshed and sat down and worked out exactly what I had to do and, tho' its not yet finished, I think Im on my way to achieving it.

Pics and commentary if you press the i icon (like in the tuts) at the end of the album.

How about: garden gnomes, a fountain, a crashed helicopter, a construction site with digger, a statue, a lemonade stand...

See-saw, sand pit or maypole ?

Before I read what Manuela had written, I thought of a fountain or a water feature....erm...a helicopter crash didn't occur to me though  :S

PollyWally's idea of a sand pit might be cute with a little bucket and spade.

Ladies, Ladies,

may I once again remind you of the scale of things ...

Slide    1 1/2" tall x 1 1/2" long

Kiddie Car    3/4" sq

Paddling pool   1" x 1/2"

I think a bucket and spade would be cute but .....

Yesterday I was sooooo tired when I woke that I decided not to do anything major Village wise but sewing needed to be done .. tempus is fugitting relentlessly on ..

So yesterday, after a lil 'gardening' (I finally got rid of the dreaded hand written Duck sign, I got The Opus out and as it was never designed to be hung, took the hanging sleeve and competition entry pocket off ... after a lil alteration on the width of the sleeve I sat down, bit the bullet and calmly hand-sewed the sleeve to The Black and White Jobby, next was the entry pocket and I was done!

Today, I made and attached the sleeve and pocket for The African Queens Quilt and now I'm up to date!

Tomorrow I wont have any more procrastination jobs ready and will have to get back to it ...

Oh and here's the result of my gardening efforts ....

I need to get on with this now ...

I've given myself a cut off date of 30th June to finish the titivating and get on with layering, quilting and binding so must get on ...

My main problem are clouds!
I want some texture, and differences in colour ...

Soaking cotton wool in paint/dye makes them fall apart, same with toy stuffing  -<
Painting onto white fabric worked quite well, it was very dark, then dried very light so more experimentation needed !

Any ideas/tips/hints will, as usual, be very much welcomed ...

Cotton velvet would add some texture and probably take the colour well, but it frays like a fray-y thing.

A dark burgandy red - to contrast with the green.

For texture (asuming you mean a printed texture and not something like velvet!) can you find something printed with wood grain?  or something else that's almost stripey like long grass?

That was similar to my thoughts BP.  I was thinking a reddish brown, glazed cotton perhaps?  I used that as background for my Horse cushion, and it worked far better than black against all the colour.

I agree with @b15erk, a lovely rich blue would be wonderful.  For me personally, brown would be too dull and depressing.  Such a gorgeous quilt wants a rich 'look at me' colour  :)

You know how when you're at the beach, boiling hot and need to cool down ???
You stand at the edge of the beach, looking at the beautiful, blue, beckoning sea ...
but you know its going to be absolutely freezing ..

and then you do it, you can bare the heat no more, you run into the surf, screaming and drop down into the waves up to your neck ...
it is freezing, you can barely speak  ... and then its Okay, actually more than Okay, its bliss !

Well Ladies, I know I have been absent for a while and that is because Im trying very, very hard to finish this son of a quilt ... Its been a loooong slog ..

Yesterday I spent around 6 hours .... yes really, not a typo, you read that right SIX .... trying to back the blooming thing!!!! The problem being my backing fabric is a gorgeous, but not to be recommended for backing a quilt, hstathon type fabric ....

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/NmfWemrMgjgx_Dyg7E4cLYZxwB3FoGwObmjWI7PNcLpu9eRC8lRSC3hS-ZBNOy0qHoqqvPbGbDvRHMzAZvUWVQRz7JV4iMOI57TNLGUniYIo6d3v6h0j6wsbj8QPD3exVZKyS5XHQ0C9W34HTEuHUVfFpP7z4SWJfAZ8b_bTnhRtC4J-3rj5j2FMROz5BodoSSrFpv40Vuc2ixiYtuhzj0thdErvwmsZpVGnaNFVSs_uDvP41HEhiwf5wTWBG-qfzhs83Uw0yF5jCQYouDbN5wYEP9SFca02zsIKLPpbb5Gzb0rjK3_s1AQCO9f9Wz95-E3bAxXBefN68kaE82-y2EyIMfThwPLdTn298grbHCaqivFiSkXkAgVtsPOT7xwY05bZXJRaqNVVAB7aM-yVaXx1qMtXu9WkOgZnFhchYNjqUwMOm8v3buqttGh1XyRx0mLQDmMNmx6Nom5LP7bNPjN8tYOIuZGH5G1-1nfNUzJfMTR6vPA9HWMGRMiuV8_pAXvhE3fKDuIe_7hCsgrZPtGmS-NOS__9bTxeDi8HJp-YyCC9Z8JeX8E47LcFwZ56ZvihCFctDc-kOcOTOA0xX-HDHHwaO75Ir3ISQhXHaiDPLdESly39fzxv2J3zN7SVwl-4UoVCQ_WicqtXlNhD3rC5gW4=w1020-h738-no)

linky (https://photos.app.goo.gl/vCnmz4KkrYbXeSMs5)

but finally after the said number of hours I was reasonably happy ... Its now too big and heavy to pin to any of my other hangings and has taken over the lounge! D'OH! (I did make a promise to Imself that our beautiful, newly decorated lounge would not become a quilt workshop/storage facility ... but hey! the whole house is a quilt workshop/ storage facility!!

Amongst the many highlights of my SIX hour marathon was feeding the Mei when she came down from a much needed nap around noon, when ... and I still don't quite know how I did this ... on the short walk from the worktop, where I smoosh up her food, to her room, where she eats, I managed to double flip her bowl which then landed on the floor t'other side of the table on which The Village was resting.

Needless to say the food which micro moments before was in said bowl had settled on said table, millimetres from the quilt!!!!! well, all but one rogue morsel which I quickly pincered off ....

To say the Mei was surprised to be asked to lick food off the table (she is after all a very well brought up Siamese) is an understatement, but she rose to the challenge and I washed the table down afterwards with Fairy and cold water. (Oh yes, did I tell you, our boiler gave up the ghost on Monday!)

I think it was during the 5th go round of pinning the backing to ensure that it was square that I decided enough was enough, that and the fact that my fingers were bleeding and sore ... and so it rests waiting for the new day ... there is enough blood, spit, sweat and tears in that thing now for it officially to be called a labour of love!

Adieu dear friends and interested parties, Adieu xxx

I was worried you were going to say you'd injured yourself somehow and was back to square-one with your foot.  :S

'...on the short walk from the worktop...' I was afraid to read beyond this bit, in case you went on to say something like.....  'I slipped on something on the floor, did the splits and spent a few hours at A & E again. Now back in plaster.'

Phew.

Sorry no pic showing for me at the moment, but not to worry.
You'll need a break away from this and all sewing when you've finished it.

Step away from the Village, Iminei .....

I've had to step away from TV as I have tension issues with The Splurgess.
Is it because the reel of thread is coming to an end ???

I dont know ... but that in itself behoves another problem; Im right at the end of one of my greens (Oh Yes ... Lowena is going to loooove this quilt ... so many greens!)

So what to do ... Sensible Imi has stepped away from TV, turned off TS and is tapping away on here ... better that than try to continue, lose it and go down another avenue ... No OH to snatch the offending article away you see, and if he did, this time I could be hard on his heels up the stairs!

So a break ... Should I attempt a slow walk onto town to see if I can replace the Green ??? I have used it a lot and it might be noticed if it was suddenly absent ...
Return to TV in an hour ??? hoping the tension issues are resolved?
Or lose a precious day of work ???? and come to it fresh in the morning?

Decisions,. decisions

Step away from the Village, Iminei .....

So a break ... Should I attempt a slow walk onto town to see if I can replace the Green ??? I have used it a lot and it might be noticed if it was suddenly absent ... NO. It's going to be the hottest day the year and it will wear you out. So not the best idea to do that today IMHO.
Return to TV in an hour ??? hoping the tension issues are resolved? No.  Hope won't resolve the issues .
Or lose a precious day of work ???? and come to it fresh in the morning? YES definitely! That sounds like the best idea all round. Get a cold drink, chill out and relax and you will be better able to deal with it tomorrow all fresh and ready for the challenge ahead!

OK a day off from TV!

But I did wander very carefully and slowly into town to get some green, so I am ready to go tomorrow morning with no delays.

It wasn't too hot a walk as there was quite a strong, warm breeze ... I enjoyed it, like being on holiday in the Med!
Although my foot is complaining ever so slightly.

Are you able to get some more thread locally? There's some online at Jaycotts. Delivery usually pretty quick..within 2 - 3 days, although I realise you're running out of time.

Good luck.

No, nothing locally.

I have found some at The Little House of Patchwork and have bought it. I have sent them a message ... (Why do all P&Q shops close at 4pm ????) begging them to send out as soon as is possible ...

I'm using it as the bobbin thread as it matches the backing so beautifully, I have a lil left on the bobbin and this ....

@StitchinTime  Lady SewnSew were my first call yesterday afternoon.....

Jane said there was one in the box but it turned out to be another colourway that someone had misplaced there! AAggh!! They have great customer service and if they had one I would be receiving it this morning or tomorrow at the latest.

Im hoping that Cherry Tree fabrics (Boscombe, about 20 miles away) have some ... I have a friend who lives nearby and hes willing to get it to me today if they do!

Midsomer Quilting probably will have it but they are closed til Friday and an hour and a half from me!

I'm so pleased you've got it sorted out.

SSShhhh!!! Dont jinx it!!!

So today I have
cut, joined and pressed the binding
Made a fabric envelope for the back of TV (to hold the entry slip)
and attached the labels to the packaging,

Cant really do anymore so might hobble into town to get something for dinner.

Apart from Threadgate, we have just been told our Home Emergency Insurance is NOT going to repair our boiler (we have been without hot water or heating for the last 15 days) and my Insurance company are trying to get a settlement out of them (sigh) and a big part of our fence has blown down in the wind and Imself has had to cut back down our lovely evergreen clematis  and a large part of our bamboo ... Oh and the gate wont stay closed because the archway has moved!

IT IS DONE!!!!!

It has been quilted, bound, hanging sleeve hand stitched on (remarkably pleasant experience considering my loathing of HS) and is Hung.

The first time I tried to hang it it was all skew-whiff ....

AAAGGGHHHH!! I thought my heart might stop!!

What had happened?? It was fine when I hung it with the hanging sleeve pinned ... What could I have done wrong????

I took it down, took the Dowel out of the sleeve and found the culprit, a rogue yellow pin!!!

Rehung it and ... It hangs beautifully! Well as nice as it can ...
and will hang better at FOQ as they use laths rather than 2" round dowels

'Scuse the pic; its the only place I can hang it ....    a narrow landing

Im leaving it to hang while I have some lunch and then will do the final press (Oh yes; no pressing has gone on in that pic btw) and add the few embellishments I want to and then .... It's done!

What an amazing piece of work... and a splendid tribute to 'Vege'.

I've been lurking here, admiring and in awe, but just had to comment.

Thank you, I will post more... promise.

I'm a garment sewer (me, granddaughter and her dolls) but you of The Dark Side are truly awesome... colors, precision (garments you can fudge  ;)) and, gulp, geometry.  Thanks for all your wonderful work.

  colors, precision... and... geometry

I couldn't do geometry at school but have had no problem since drafting patterns for quilting, sewing and on one occasion making a unit to fit into an alcove.
