Access All Accessories / Re: Is this the right place ????

In both patterns a narrow folded piece of fabric is used as the spool holder. In the Liberty pattern the end is held in place with a press stud and in the other pattern a small piece of Velcro is used.

This one is not as complicated (no zip) and has storage for scissors and thread reels:

There is also a patchwork version if you so desire:

This might be a bit more complicated than you are wanting but is ideal for those with an inclination to the darkside.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Silver 720d or Jaguar 487

@Peaofsweetness Have you thought about taking a class before buying an overlocker so you can have a clearer idea of what it can do and what features to look for when buying one. Some places require you to bring your own machine, but others have workshop machines you can use.

What a good use of a mini charm pack and I love the checked binding. I was tempted by several mini charm packs  but ended up destashing them as I couldn’t think what to do with them.

@Sheilago This was done using foundation paper piecing so the small pieces of fabric were stitched onto a larger piece of paper. I must admit that I didn’t bother to change to a finer needle, but I did use a 60 wt thread.

Replace “patience” with “swearing” and you’ll be nearer the construction process, though it was very easy to layer it.

As to entering a quilt for FOQ, I’d rather spend the time making a quilt or two for Project Linus than a show standard quilt.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Mini Sampler Quilt
« on: March 19, 2019, 19:32:00 PM »
To make a change from full size quilts, I’ve gone a bit smaller for my latest bit of sewing. The pattern is the Sew Tiny Sampler and was stitched using foundation paper piecing (thread reel and sleepy cat for scale).

The Village Haberdashery is in West Hampstead and has a range of quilting fabrics (as well as lots of other goodies to tempt you).

@WildAtlanticWay You'd probably find foam board in an Art supplies shop, but you can also get plastic canvas mesh to use as bag bases (Bag Clasps have it on offer at the moment). I've used thin chopping mats in bags, but they might not be rigid enough for an overlocker. I've also deconstructed lever arch file and box files and used those, but they can be a bit tough to cut to the correct size and are not waterproof.

One of the Mrs H bag patterns is for a sewing machine bag. There are photos of differnt versions including one that has an overlocker in the bag rather than a sewing machine. There's a bit more about the bag on Mrs H's blog.

Please be aware that when you stand on your head, your skirt does NOT do that! Just sayin'.  :[

It does if your skirt is tucked into your knicker legs  ;)

Details of the workshops for this year's Festival of Quilts are now online.

In the wardrobe / Re: Did I invent a seam?!

I have vague recollections from the dim and distant past of my O-level needlework that this a mock French seam.

Patterns Discussion / Re: (Wanted) Gypsy Dress Pattern

You could get that effect with separates  - a blouse, a skirt, and a corset belt. Have a look at the costume patterns and you might find something. Don’t worry if a pattern says it is “underwear”, it can just as easily be used as “outerwear”.

Click through the photos for any pattern that looks promising to find the line drawings as it is easier to see the design on these and what parts each patterns includes.
