Title: How should I quilt this?
Post by: rubywishes on March 24, 2018, 08:24:43 AM
My UFO's are down to the last one...the one that scares the dickens out of me tbh because it is the most complicated pattern/piecing I've ever done and I just don't know what sort of quilting will look good with it. Any ideas please? The Juki is off for it's first service and tickle next week so I have a leisurely couple of weeks to baste it and work out my strategy. Excuse the brown quilt lying under it in pic 1.

What an absolutely gorgeous quilt Ruby.  I can't really help you on the quilting because I've only ever done 3 and not progressed beyond straight lines.  I don't think you need anything too close or complex on that quilt.  I am quite partial to diagonals and chevrons and find them easy to do with no marking just eyeballing the line from point to point of the piecing.

I agree with the straight lines school of thought, think Art Deco.

Fabulous quilt BTW.

So tell me then....with all the stop and start lines I'd be doing following your suggestions......do I have to knot and bury EVERY blooming thread? How do you secure all those stops and starts?

Can't help you there Ruby I'm afraid.... I always hand quilt  - big stitch with perle cotton. Easy to stop and start  ;)
There is a way with a needle and loop, but it makes no sense at all to me although I believe @Iminei  uses the technique ( when she doesn't use a long armer )

I just do a few reverse stitches, or use the auto tie and cut on the machine....there again I’m a sewing slut..( strange because I’m also a knit picking perfectionist). can’t be bothered with all the hand threading through stuff.

If you do stitch in the ditch between blocks you should be able to minimise stop/start a bit.

Auditioning for a quilting plan (https://www.handiquilter.com/videos/golden-threads/132/)

Straight Lines - Dot to Dot and Straight lines can be quite straight forward to work out a plan for travelling across the quilt applying the design instead of stop, start.

I agree with the straight lines, but I think you should quilt it in a way which pleases you otherwise you'll get fed up with it before you're even part-way through. I always knot and bury my threads using a cheater's needle (or easy-thread eye) but I find it therapeutic to do after the quilting, so I don't suppose that helps you much. Sorry. :S

Absolutely gorgeous quilt, by the way.  <3

There you go Rubes... Easy peasy... and you know it is 'cos I can do it!

OMG EVERY thread :o   :S This is why I like edge to edge stuff! I'm gonna have to think about this......could require more stamina than spiral quilting!!

OMG EVERY thread :o   :S

You don't have to do it - it's your quilt - do what pleases YOU. :)

Sometimes, I bury the ends. I do it every time I get to the end of a section as it only takes a moment and I hate having millions of tangled ends waiting for me as a reward for finishing the quilting. Other times I just back tack some tiny stitches  at start and finish and clip the ends off close - seems to work just as well. Your quilt, do what you like. Edge to edge is so much simpler :D but not always the answer :(.

Thankyou everyone, I've got a couple of weeks to ruminate on it and find a suitable pair of "brave pants" to put on. I guess it is inevitable that I am going to have to stop being so lazy as I really do like the look of  the more involved quilting and I think this particular quilt would benefit from it. I will return to this post when more hand holding is required!
