Technical Help / Re: 70's double breasted suit poject
« on: February 27, 2021, 21:45:40 PM »
I have given this topic deep thought.
The book I ordered to help me never arrived.
After watching the videos of the master tailor making a suit...
I have decided ...
It is way beyond my skills.
Another way of looking at it is...
If I had the skills to turn out beautiful well fitting Gents suits I would not be sat in my shed making model boats but earning a lot of money!!
The videos were a treat to watch and just confirmed one thing...
Pete..... This is too much for you...admit it dreamer!!!
Phew!    Glad I wangled my way out if that one.

The 201K is a dependable machine but I agree, if you are using treadle then a Beige later model will not look correct.
There is nothing wrong with a 66.
The stitch quality is the same.
Okay it doesn't have reverse stitch but you really have to think when you actually need this.
Half the time when we hem and get to corners there is no need to reverse stitch as the fabric will be turned and resewn?
For what it's worth I would not dump a good working 66 even if the decals are worn.
They are an excellent machine and when with the treadle immensely powerful.

Oh okay.
I will see what I can come up with.
I think the other males may be just in their caves in deep thought but that's okay.

@Lilian Thank you for your concerns and that was kind.
I am well but just learning to be more of a listener.
I learn more that way!

Thanks for all this Popeye!
Wow...Gee Whiz!!!
What a wake up call.
I have watched the video and it is an education in itself.
Frightenenly so.
So nice to see a well dressed expert demonstrating his guarded skills.
I am in awe.
I may have to do a bit of Bodge it and scarpering!
I never thought I was capable of making a violin but history has proven that I have made five.
That was shear determination.
As I get older my self confidence somewhat dwindles and then I think about " God give me the courage to make what I can and the wisdom to know differently"
( My own take) on it.
I also wonder sometimes how I ever made all the different things in my life but there you go.
Phew!!!

@Elnnina .
That was of great help and thank you.
I need to be armed with as much info as possible.
I am watching you tubes on how to hand sew suit button holes at the moment.
" Hui's tayloring". He is very good.
I am an armchair Taylor but it's fun learning.
I will start practicing. On scrap material to get the hang of it and maybe post some pics of my efforts.
I have, in the last five minutes ordered the book you suggested.
Brilliant.
Thanks.

Thank you Phil.
I believe you are right.
I will talk him into a lightweight wool.
I second your views on linen as my shirts are 100% linen, for casual wear and yes they crease like heck but I am okay with that.
Not for suits though.

Ha ha.
Thanks for all your help so far.
Get him to help me?
That will be a disaster. He is 50 years old and ERM....has his opinions!!!!. He will take over, overwhelm me and I would end up under instruction from someone who has not yet made a suit.
Pure wool?
I get your drift on this one re workability but we live in Australia and we are already on 35 degrees each day.
It needs to be of a very light material/ fabric.
I don't get much choice about the fabric as he will go ahead and chose it anyway.
I have asked him to buy a maniquin for a starters.
Yes the suit will only be worn a few times at most.
Therefore I may be tempted to cut a few corners to keep sane.
It will probs end up a costume suit in view of it only being worn a few times, it's light weight and the fact that I am not a Taylor.
I have to pretend to be one and then it will work.

Hey Dad!
I have a project for you!
I want you to make me a double breasted suit in time for March whereas I will be best man at a wedding, but don't worry I have ordered the pattern!!!!
AHHHHH!...
I Know I am not up to this but my son thinks I can do just anything...
That's my fault for bringing them up to take anything on and not to shy away because things incurr determination and degrees of difficulty.
So there we are....I am now in a pickle!
I have told him there are some things I cannot do.
Mhhhh...looks like I have to go for it.
The only way it will happen is with a positive mindset and determination.
So here goes.
I will keep you posted.
It will be a big kick if it's a success.
For the expert Taylors amongst you I will appreciate all help I ask for.
I know!
I am crazy.

Beautiful machine and I also like the colour.
Surprisingly I believe they are also made from cast iron so very sturdy.
I would be very happy with a beauty like that.
Well done for fixing it.
It is heart breaking when machines arrive in kit form !!!
I have hit the roof a few times now.

That is an interesting and nice machine.
What does the arm at the back do?
I am guessing it operates the feed dogs as there does not appear to be a form of zig zag adjustment.

Vintage Machines / Re: Old Singer 28k - should I keep it?
« on: December 03, 2020, 22:58:32 PM »
Your Hubby is feeling on top of the world as he has bought you what he thought was a beautiful old machine.
That is what it is!!!!
" Shall I keep it"???....
Fat YES of course for the above reasons.
As said by others....for spare parts...Helen Howes.
Everything can be fixed/ replaced and it is a nice journey doing it. ( save a machine from the tip)
Those old shuttle machines do a lovely stitch and also in heavy fabrics.
You have total control for fine work with a hand cranker.
You may find that with time you will grow to love it.
You just cannot let it go.
It is telling you that!!!!!
