Title: Hello from Glasgow
Post by: TartanPaint on July 27, 2020, 15:00:48 PM
Hello there, from a very rainy Glasgow.

My name is William. I've been into sewing on and off since I took it up as a hobby in my 20's. I do furniture restoration as well.

I got a call from my sister a while ago saying that, due to ill health, she was having to give up her little sewing business. It was nothing major; just a little side interest making things she could sell at car boot sales and craft fairs. She asked me if I wanted my machine back and it was only then I remembered I had given her mine ages ago. So, being a big brother, I did what big brothers do and took my machine back and made off with about ten grands worth of fabric for absolutely nothing. I feel a bit guilty because some of it goes for £30 per metre.

Anyway; I'm more into decorative stuff and upholstery rather than clothes and I admit I'm a bit of a lurker so I'll no doubt benefit way more from your posts than you will from mine. If this introduction goes for much it should demonstrate what I mean.

Thanks a lot,

William.

Hi William.

Welcome to TSP.

She got it from a woman who was selling up her fabric business. Some of it is incredible. It's beautiful. Riley Blake, Tula Pink, vintage licensed Disney stuff, some really exclusive high end decor stuff too. One I'm allowed to post photos I'll let you see some of it.

:)

Yes, there's like 10 big storage boxes full of it. It's a shame she needs the space and needs rid of it....

:)

Hello and Welcome @TartanPaint - your name reminds me of a joke that some senior men in a works place sent the young new junior to buy striped paint!  Sure you've heard that one...best wishes on all your sewing endeavours...we are all green with envy (although the good Lord says we shouldn't be) at the stash you've been given.

@hernibs

Once I subscribe I'll post photos of some of it. I'll mainly be looking to make cushion covers etc. out of it. There's some stuff, like stretchy white super soft babyish stuff, I've no idea what to do with. :)

@TartanPaint just under the Sewing Place banner at the top of the page on the right hand side there is a Support the Sewing Place link. It's by no means compulsory but it would be much appreciated.

@wrenkins

Can I just give you the tenner up front and that makes me a subscriber? :)

Yes.
If you follow that link you'll find a big blue button that'll take you into the back of the wardrobe. Go in there.  :)

@wrenkins

 :angel:

So much for lurking lol. I take it four buttons are good?

Support? It's only a tenner.
I spend more than that making my office smell nice but if it helps then that's awesome. I'll probably have a badge too. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction :)

No indeed one would never reveal one's weight though I fear it is proportional to the size of the stash although there's a bit less of me since the lockdown diet!
On the stash - well I have three large (but not, alas, mothproof) seagrass trunks, another cupboard and a couple of plastic boxes. I have been thinning out the stash and some will go to schools and other bits to charity shops when it is practicable. @TartanPaint some of the folks here are very disciplined and only buy what they need. Others, me included , suffer from a condition you may have heard of called SABLE (stash accummulation beyond life expectancy).  :D

@Tamnymore

I have an Engineers brain and I'm much more pragmatic about it. Like one of my old teachers used to say:

"Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it"

I know there are probably exceptions that prove the rule but I've found when it comes to camera equipment, woodworking tools, and sewing stuff (and a few other things I wont mention on here) that the above sentiment, applied liberally, works very well for me. A big stash is just...........forward planning and makes perfect sense from a project management and resourcing standpoint.

@wrenkins

I'll have the chocolate then!

I'll see if I can get a screen shot of her Etsy where she's selling some of it. No links or names or advertising, just some of the different kinds.

Here's another one of my favourites. Think this would look awesome in a camper or caravan :)

Yummy! BTW I got some of that biplanes and balloons fabric for £5 pm from Immanuels. It's a John Louden fabric. Immanuels may have some of it if you dig around their FB site.

@Tamnymore

Yes, Flying High it's called. When I saw it my first thought was a full bed set for a kids bedroom. Not sure if it's wide enough for curtains, though, but the kid in me loved it. :)

Fabric porn.  :faints: Good thing there's a lot of water between us. That and my already gargantuan Fabric Archive. I was the primary recipient of one person giving up her garment making stash, a friend moving hundreds of miles away and wanting to trade for 2 small but pricey hat blocks and another where a quilting friend bought a deceased womans collection to get her vintage sewing machine collection. I ended up with bolts of linens and garment fabrics..

Welcome to the fold William.
