Title: Plaids, Tartans & Checkered Fabrics competition - sewing for cooler temperatures
Post by: Manuela on September 15, 2018, 00:31:16 AM
One out of the blue, to celebrate to upcoming arrival of the cooler season (at least in the northern hemisphere).

Plaids, Tartans & Checkered Fabrics competition

1. You shall make a minimum of one garment - it can be anything, top, dress, skirt, jumpsuit, trousers....
2. If you want to make more than one entry, feel free to do so, but submit them in separate posts
3. Please clearly indicate what pattern you used and what, if any, changes you made
4. You don't need to use a commercial pattern, self drafted is fine
5. Sewing starts on October 1st , you can prepare & fit the pattern and cut before that date
6. Sewing finishes on November 15th , please post pictures by November 20th
7. You need to use plaids, tartans, checks or gingham as the main fabric of your garment
8. Your entry here can also be included in your SWKOP

Sounds like a plan! I need some new pyjama bottoms, and I also would like a new flannel shirt. Just need to find the perfect fabric first!

Sew Today October 2018
Essential Tips for Sewing Checks and Tartans

I saw this and thought, "That looks familiar".  I keep useful articles on techniques and how-to and sure enough, it's an exact reprint of the same article, with only the garment picture changed, that they published maybe four or five years ago.  Some things bear repeating, I suppose, but it does make one wonder what one is paying one's subscription for!

That's interesting. There's been a
discussion about the value of the sew direct offering on another thread. One of the reasons I cancelled was because I saw an article repeated verbatim. I've probably seen this one first time round!

Maybe this year I should cut into that taupe and cadet blue tartan? I've improved my pattern patching skills so could probably handle it.

Maybe. I have several assorted tartans in brown & blacks, bought many moons ago -2007- knowing it would be several years before they would be sewn as I continued to accumulate fabrics that worked together. Think I'm there now.

Who am I kidding? Sounds good but highly unlikely for me anytime soon.

You can use it as your entry. I wanted to put up the new competition a week or so ago, but work got in the way. Hence, I'm in a very lenient mood  ;)

Be brave @SewRuthieSews and do it. Take your time for cutting, identify which part of the tartan you want to use at centre back and centre front first, the cut it open (in single layers). Hand baste each seam before you sew it, and you'll have it perfectly matched.

It does annoy me a great deal when I see RTW with terribly mismatched checks.

If I decide that's a bridge too far (and I need to check the time frame) I have some cotton tartan fabric which I was planning to use for PJ pants which would be simpler!

Although @Manuela's in a lenient mood will she be lenient with us if our pattern matching isn't perfect?  ;)

If you combine tartan with other fabrics you might not have to do any pattern matching at all. I'm going to make an asymmetric Tiltonesque top, with lots of pieces, from a combination of a tartan silk dupion remnant and some flowery Liberty varuna wool. Both fabrics have a predominant red and black colourway. The tartan was a 2m by 50cm remnant and the Liberty fabric comes from a combination of a charity shop skirt and a pair of trousers which I made too small ( ) but couldn't bear to dispose of. Let's see if my no pattern matching theory works!  0_0

Post by: SewRuthieSews on September 17, 2018, 07:35:26 AM
You can also avoid pattern matching if you have some panels cut on the bias or very strangely shaped pattern pieces like this skirt.
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8MUogw5Yggc/VwpNmg7RV6I/AAAAAAAAIrw/lXVstgOdtGwvHSapMYfS5Mle15PpvaENg/s320/navyplaidskirt.jpg)(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XLqnUt5xpa8/UBRCXyJ8qeI/AAAAAAAAES8/KlEJO4Clflo/s320/PrimaSkirt+(3).JPG)

I overdyed it navy some time after I'd made it and then it was more of a textured navy than a check.

I'm thinking of a hack on McCalls 6035 (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51f6b3z7pdL.jpg)  which I've made a couple of times and the fit is good on me.

I want to cut the back panel on the bias so as to keep it symetrical but the pattern repeat of the fabric is 16cm lengthways and nearly 17cm widthways  -<  I wonder what it will be like after pre-washing?  If it evens up a bit it will be OK but if it goes in the opposite direction I'll have to re-think.

Think I can do this (haven't sewn much since last year when I didn't finish the red outfit I was going to take on the holiday, tried to finish the cardigan/jacket for last  night, but failed. Have started again and made the blind waiting since last November, so..)
I was intending to make some warm skirts anyway.  I have two options:   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Both need a lot of alterations to the patterns.
Tried pressing in the pleats in the brown wool but when I held it up they opened out like a bell tent - not what I need.  The black and white pressed beautifully and stays flat, so I'm going with that.
Hopefully there will be pictures.
Ooh, pictures!

After pre-washing the difference in pattern repeat width was more noticeable so I've gone with a CB seam instead.

I did the cutting out yesterday and it took ages making sure that all the hems were at the same level. and also cutting one layer and a time and repeating ot get duplicate copies of everything; the fabric is reversable so one of each piece is flipped over.

I've got most of it sewn together today, only the cuffs and buttonholes left to do.

Oh! You bought the Clan Halen tartan!!!***

***For the uninformed, years ago when I frequented the Highland Games circuit in California a group of younger folks (I was one then.) had gathered together to form their own Clan, Clan Halen. Someone had found a bolt of tartan in hot pink and black-who could resist? There were kilts, sashes and tams made from it. When they paraded the grounds one of the bigger fellows had a boombox on his shoulder blasting Van Halen. They were a lot of fun to hang out with. They ran out of the fabric.

I always find American and Canadian tartans amazing. On a trip to Nova Scotia a few years ago I came back with a few pieces. Nova Scotia seemed more Scottish than Scotand (bagpipes anyone?) - sort of 'Gaelier than thou'  0_0

I attribute it in part to the movies "Braveheart" and "Rob Roy". Let's not leave out "Outlander."  :toast: All the Renaissance Faires here are overrun with Scots since then. And Pirates...thank Johnny Depp for that. Sometimes it's Scot Pirates. Or Steampunk Scot Air Pirates. Pass the tartan please...

Someone in the neighborhood used to play pipes. When I lived in the Oakland hills the bagpipe music would waft through the valleys.

I noticed Janet has the same fabric in her picture on page 2.
I have 2 metres of it which should be sufficient for a midi skirt.

I'm not completely fixed yet on what fabric I want to sew for this contest. I have a few choices, but want to make a garment I really want to wear not just something that meets the rules.

Got the skirt cut out. This is a pattern I wanted to tackle for quite a while. It is Old New Look, published by the English Pattern Company, Bradford, presumably before they were taken over. 1994, so vintage, like me. I have made the straight skirt before but want to try the back pleated version.  I have reduced the length of the pleats quite a lot, mid calf is not a good length for me,

@SewRuthieSews I have it in blue as well, mine is earmarked for a kilt. To start with though I am going to make a skirt with some patchwork tartan corduroy I have. There is a pattern repeat down and across but I am struggling to match across with it having a nap, I cannot flip the pattern pieces. Hoping, as it is patchwork, my seams won't be too obvious a mismatch, we will see.
Second project is a cape with the houndtooth, I will probably go for knee length with a hood.

and sew a knit top using a printed abstract check. I think it looks quite good when made up.

I used the knit top with 3/4 sleeves from New Look 6735.

Got the back of the skirt put together.  You probably can't see it clearly, but I have matched the pattern -vertically.  There was not enough fabric to move the whole thing up 5cm, those pleats are really greedy!
I am wondering if I should have gone with matching horizontally and let the pleats take the blame for any misalignment.
Having said that, the pleat distance is just enough to bring the pattern back together.  I wonder if fabric and pattern designers work on a module measurement, like builders?
Just one line that is a tiny bit out, but that is due to the pleat fold underneath and I'm not going to unpick any more.
Because the fabric is prone to fraying, I gave the pleat section its own lining.  I'll put the lining in for the rest when I've worked it out.  Oh, and there was just enough fabric in the scraps to cut a pocket for the right hand side.

Very nearly finished the skirt but it is a total disaster. Not even a dog's dinner, more of a Kennel Club Banquet.
Should definitely have started to match up the pleats with the back horizontally.  Main trouble was starting out to get the main body sections and then fiddle the layout to get the pleats section out of the remainder.  Every single thing that could go wrong did, including dropping the sewing needle, trying to stop it on the way down, so catching my nail and nicking the edge.  Second side of the zip was slightly out, carefully unpicked it and moved it the fraction needed - the wrong way.
I will post a picture to show I actually got to the end, but no way can it be entered. May wear it for housework if we have a cold winter.

Finished. Managed to match the back seam and pockets on back and front but couldn't match the side seams as well as back. The front is cut on the fold to incorporate the pleat. If I had thought a bit harder I should have cut with a centre seam (matched) and then do the pleat as an underlay. As it was the skirt took 2 metres and would normally take 1 1/4.

Thank you @Tamnymore. Sadly it’s needlecord, I stay miles away from corduroy as I had to wear it extensively when I was a kid. Usually the handmedowns my brother grew out of, and I was mercilessly bullied for it at school (no school uniforms in Germany).
Hmm, that might explain the rather well filled closet I have nowadays...
Anayway, no needle cord shall come near me or my closet

Oh dear @Manuela . Bad karma from needlecord. I know what you mean about school clothes or, for people in the UK, it's often the colour of their old school uniform that they avoid. (In my case maroon).  :S

Here's my tartan entry. It is an asymmetric shirt from Butterick pattern 6521. Interestingly I could not find any reviews of this pattern anywhere! As the pattern lends itself to piecing it is a good way of putting together a set of matching or contrasting fabrics. I have used some Liberty Varuna wool in a flowery pattern taken from a pair of trousers which never fitted and a charity shop skirt along with some tartan silk dupion - again from a charity shop (an odd length - about 60cm by 2m)  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  . The only change I made was to add a couple of extra sections along the hem, front and back at the left hand side (luckily I had just enough fabric). The left side is a lot shorter than the sight side and I found that the left pocket tended to hang down below the hem. If I make the pattern again I'll extend the hem on the left by a couple of inches and curve the edge of the hem accordingly. Its a nice pattern - went together well and I'm pleased with the result.

Managed to get my cape cut out, tacked and sewn, in the main fabric. Just the lining the do and wouldn't you know it the piece I had in mind is too small. I have been to Fabworks as well today, if only I had checked the lining before I went. Now have to go again, what a shame  :loveit:
Pics show how I marked the pattern piece to get a match on the fabric and the cape made up so far. It was a headache thinking about the pattern running both ways but I think I have managed to get the pattern all lined up.

Amended, oops looks as if there is a ghost at the window

Glad some people get to finish things!  Going to unpick the waistband on my prince of wales check skirt and see if I can make it fit better by adjusting the darts. I suspect it is not the shape of the skirt, but of me.
I was going to bin it, but when I picked it up to mourn over, OH said "Oh, you could wear that", as if he'd never seen it before.  Guess who put me off it in the first place?

How lovely! That's one where people will stop you in the street to ask how you got it!

I do like the lining, so nice to have a bit of a dazzle inside. I rather fancied a cape - I have the pattern, but didn't know what it would be worn with -  what are you planning?

A cape like this can be worn the same way as a jacket of a similar length. It looks as good with a pair of jeans as it does with a straight cut skirt or dress.
The world needs more capes!

I only do skirts and dresses, made primarily to wear when we go out. Something not too heavy but will keep a chill off whilst we walk to the pub/restaurant/friends and easy to put over the back of a chair (have you noticed there never seems to be anywhere to hang coats these days).

Thanks! Now I am thinking evening/party, which would mean a lovely fabric.  Ooh, what a nice idea.
A bit too unusual for everyday on an older lady round here, rather noticeable and I don't want to be noticed. What I'm aiming for is this:
"I can never remember what Mrs X was wearing, but I always get the impression she was well dressed"
Can't remember what book that came from.  Anyhow, aiming is one thing, hitting the target is another!

Had to take the pocket out, it was distorting the line too much. Also resized the back darts.  Can't get a better picture of the back. Phone camera, expanded and over shoulder at an angle in less than perfect light, press the button while trying not to wobble, emailed to self and resized.. amazed it came out at all.  But I did finish.

Having a stab at the second piece of wool. I thought the pleated skirt with the plain overlay, sort of kilty, but the pleats would not hold, so have tried to enlarge the four panel flared skirt to my size.  Probably not the right way, but slid the pattern 'x' inches parallel to the grainline.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Now have four panels, which match up nicely

Matched, and that joined seam includes a zip. Tres chuffed.

This I do not like.  I can't see it working even if it was a plain material so I shall turn it round and make the side zip a centre back zip.  Then I will try and reshape the side seams into a sort of A-line.

Yes, the black and white is finished, starting on the brown.  (I thought I had replied to this from my tablet, must have messed up)

@toileandtrouble, I collected all the bits and pieces you posted here about the black and white skirt for the voting thread.
It would be great if you could do that next time and post it in the thread as your entry - that way I just need to copy and paste the entry without searching the thread for details  :)
Am I right to assume that this is your entry? If not, I discard the draft.
