Title: Freestanding Lace
Post by: Sara-S on July 01, 2020, 17:10:30 PM
I decided to try this for the first time today, after finding some images that weren’t so sickeningly Lacy.  There are all kinds of designs in many styles.  Ironically, I hate old-fashioned lace, but like the technique.
I had some trouble with my first piece as the thread got tangled.  But after changing the needle, taking apart the bobbin case & cleaning out all the tangled thread, the second one went more smoothly.
Here they are;

I made another piece last night.  Since it was Canada Day (& my husband was born there) I made Mr. Albert A. Moose.

Freestanding lace was one of the first big jobs I gave my embroidery machine to do.  I made over 25 of these bauble covers, to give as gifts for xmas a couple of years back.

This is what they look like, as they are stitching out.

Do you hand-stitch them closed around the ornament?  They look great.

Yes, you join the two sets of 3 panels together at the edges, slide the circle of lace over the bauble, and then tie in place with ribbon at the top (and bottom depending on the design).

My machine is a Janome 400e.  The hoop clips are a standard accessory with the hoops.  and Yes, they are very handy.  A couple of my hoops are the wrong width for the plastic clips, but I have had success with fold back stationery clips, although you have to watch that they don't get in the way of the foot as the hoop moves about.

Here are some more pieces I made. This time, I got daring and did some ornaments with multiple colors.

Those are brilliant @Sara-S. Very pretty.
Someone on the forum made a stunning white Christmas tree in lace but I can't find it. I'll have another look.  8)

I did a couple of FSL Christmas stocking ornaments this morning.  They were small enough to do 2 in one hooping.  Very cute.
