Title: Overlock and coverstitch thread hack
Post by: Pinkstar on April 25, 2017, 14:54:23 PM
Just read this blog post from 2012, a good way to save some money on thread.

Great idea.... the other day I had the overlocker, coverstitch and my machine all for one project..that was 8 spools of navy blue thread!

I only buy one thread cone and use bobbins :D
Had some trouble with them in the beginning when they would sometimes jump off the spool or get tangled because they didn't feed evenly. But that has also been solved :D
When using nylon thread I also use the guard, otherwise it unravels and makes a mess.

I use Moon thread for my coverstitcher and my overlocker - 4 reels at 99p or so.  I do then have to swap them to and from each machine of course, but I view that as good threading practice.

I also use Moon thread for the needles, but when I need something less bulky I use overlocking thread on the loopers that comes in 20.000m cones, so I'd rather buy one and wind some bobbins.

My overlocker has decided that it only likes overlocker thread in the needles, after using moon thread quite a few times. It threw a hissy fit and kept snapping needles until I gave in and put it back on the finer thread - a bit of a pain when it's only the needle threads that tend to be visible. I too use bobbins if I'm not doing lots of seams where I need a lot of thread - although bobbins do hold quite a lot.

Mine is on the other end: doesn't want thin thread in the needles. It'll break it after just a few stitches.

Well I have used ordinary Gutermann thread on the needles of my Bernina when I've been short of a colour and not had any problems, probably the looper threads might be different.

I did something I've never done before on Wednesday, realised the thread was going to run out on the upper looper, tied more thread on and it sewed through without a hitch.

:o I didn't know that there was such a thing as overlocking thread.  I've only ever used moon or Gutermann  in my overlocker and touch wood not had a problem with it.

I always tie on my overlocker threads and pull them through... sometimes I just stitch when they're joined and it works most of the time... hate it when it doesn't, have to start threading from the beginning. I use cones for everything.

I recently got the Babylock coverstitch which has that - it's magic  :)

Yes I do that tying on the thread mallarkey and sewing it through. Great when it works, tedious when it doesn't. Jealous of you lot with air threaders. We definitely need a 'smug' icon!

Mines a Babylock as well. I have had it about 15 years.
