So Ladies here we are gaily tripping into May....
The month of May Blossom, May Day, May Flies and Maypole dancing...
And I am going to take you through to this months block
The Twist and Twirl
https://goo.gl/photos/Beu8r1dK393w3dKx6 (https://goo.gl/photos/Beu8r1dK393w3dKx6)
I will be making this alongside you as I attempt a Monochrome single quilt for my niece!
-
Oh, that's lovely!
It looks complicated though and I'm going to struggle to decide on fabrics and to decide how big it's going to end up. -<
It clearly needs to be of a certain size so you can see the spiral twist effect.
I definitely intend to give it a go.
Sandra.

Ooh that looks lovely I can't wait to get started! :loveit:
-
Excellent ladies,
Any questions don't hesitate as I will be right there sewing along with you!
When I come back from work I will cut some more WOF for the squares...
Who knows I may even put some yardage requirements on the BOM tut !
-
WOF ?? Remember I am new to P&Q :|
-
WOF ?? Remember I am new to P&Q :|
WOF is width of fabric.

Correctomundo Ladies
WOF = Width of fabric, meaning craft cotton which is usually 42- 44" (with selvage) wide
-
Ha ha Imi, I was just saying to OH that I need to practice HST's as I need to make flying geese for one of the blocks of a quilt that I won all the fabric for from British Patchwork and Quilting at the end of last year. Just what I need to conquer.
-
Now, Iminei, stop it. Just stop it! I've just been to Kate's today and bought fabric to make a sofa throw using the arrowhead block, and now you've been and gone and shown me this! I'll have to go back to Kate's now for some more delish stuff. What a shame. 0_0
-
Something else to do when I get home. Thanks Iminei.

I'm away from Sunday, so will give the block my attention when I get back....however......don't hold your breath for my getting it done I hate quarter square triangles with the fervour that I like hsts :D
I've only managed January's so far, so I think I might just concentrate on the Mystery quilt and gibe the BOMs a miss :ninja:

Just a couple of questions before I start, if you don't mind, Iminei. Does the background fabric need to be a solid? Do you have any advise for choosing a focus fabric, if using colour?
Tia <3
-
Does the background fabric need to be a solid?
No not necessarily; a blender, a mottled, a small tone on tone, a small patterned ...
you want the spirals to sing and shine !
Do you have any advise for choosing a focus fabric, if using colour?
I struggled hugely with this for my workshop;
I bought some batik especially, but didn't like it enough and found when rummaging through my batiks the perfect one...which I had just enough of. In fact one of the 4" squares was two cut off pieces joined!! but I defy you to find the two triangles cut from it!!!
You could use a dark of the colour chosen ie...reds...choose the darkest mottled red you can find (thinking Makower here) or a B& non directional
Slap some pics up if you need an opinion!
-
Thanks, Imi. I'll have a look in my stash (and then buy some). :flower: <3 :flower:
-
I'm thinking of orange. What do you think?
Could the focus fabric be blue?
-
Those are all really gorgeous
Go with your heart and your vision ..... I am!

I Like that Pearl. :fabric: But my like button is not working :(
-
Progress report
Not sewn together yet but...
photo 1 - something's not quite right
photo 2 - more what I was going for
-
Good colour choices Pearl :)
-
Photo 1 with the blue strips probably would have worked if the black and red swapped places. It needs the darker one in the 'ribbon' for the illusion of a shadow in the twist.
Your colours are lovely.
-
Lovely stuff! I wont post it into The BOM HOF until its a finished piece, OK?
BUT remember the 1/2 squares of the twist will only be on the top and bottom of each block, I think you may have those on the side in some of your blocks!

Its a bugger to figure out until it clicks into place...
Yes, If I were to use a feature fabric, in say Red, I would make the twist a (much) darker red or Red pattern.
I think the fact that the blue was 'darker' than the red is why the second pic works better!
With the Spiral Child, I chose a batik that had a lot of the colours I was using for the twist.
And, as you can see, in the B & W version I have chosen a black with white outlined stars for the twist,
so not quite a solid...
but as ever there is going to be a twist on this particular Twist and Twirl
-
Thanks for your input, Plosh. The problem I have is that I don't have any more of the blue in photo 1, so if I went with photo 1, I would need to track down more or swap to the other blue.
-
Well I have been busy.....
What do you think?

-
Wow! Imi you certainly have been busy! They look wonderful so precise. :snip: I haven't looked at the tut on this yet.
-
I was going to add random red blocks .... but errrm you know me and random!!!
I plan on putting white strips between the rows...maybe getting incrementally wider from a centre point...
which will of course enable me to QAYG it!!
And I have a quandary......please help me.
My life has not been like most girls as my mum died when I was 15 and family life basically ceased soon after.
I was on my own and by the time I was 19 I was living by myself in a flat ... with a double bed.
Lucia my gorgeous niece, the intended recipient, turns 21 next March. She currently splits her time with her mum and dad in Nottinghamshire (single bed) and in University digs in Italy (single bed) (Did I mention her dad is Italian?!)
The quandary is .........Do I make this as a single or a double ???
-
While a single would be more useful to her atm, in the future, a double would probably be. Therefore, I'd make it a double.
Please could you explain what you are going to do with the strips and how that means you can QAYG?
-
http://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,992.0.html (http://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,992.0.html)
I would be able to limit the bulk of the quilt passing through the harp by quilting it in 2, 3 or 4 strips and joining them afterwards.
-
I would be tempted to make a double or a small double but not as small as a single if that makes sense. Something she can wrap herself up in if the need arises or sit flat on a bed/or as a throw on a sofa.
-
I've never actually made one (although I'm thinking of the idea for the African Animal quilt I'm doing) but how about a quillow? It would be ideal for any sofa surfers that young people get a lot of these days. It can still function as a quilt but the neat truning into a cushion keeps it a bit more versatile.
Otherwise, yes I agree with what others have said, go for the double but not a huge one!
L :vintage:
-
I managed this today. Not sure about the colour but it was the best I had on hand. Does it look right to you? I'm not sure about it. :S
-
Love your colours, SG. <3

My "like" button isn't working yet. But yes, I think it looks great!! Well done! Colours are lovely. :snip: :vintage:

Wow, thanks everyone. <3

Come on everyone.... Where are your blocks ?
Is there anybody oooouuuttt there ?????
-
The weather's been too good but some wet days forecast and the fabric is sitting there waiting.
-
Haven't got back into sewing since last weeks visitor mojo gone walkabout.
L :vintage:
-
I've made a few strips of the May block... more as an experiment to test colours and patterns to see which might work best. I don't want to make a full quilt at the mo.
It's a lovely block but it's soooo difficult to choose the right fabrics to get the best effect. I think this works ok...I'm quite happy with this.
Sandra.

-
I think those work really well Sandra. The first thing I saw was a twisted ribbon. It's one of those things that a b & w image or looking through one of those red things would confirm if you were unsure.
-
Thank you, Ploshkin.
I always find it difficult to decide on the 'right' fabrics to use, and this one seemed more difficult than usual due to wanting to make sure the twist worked properly.
I really like this one.
Iminei's are lovely but I especially love how she used the fabrics in the colourful one she made.

That is truly splendiferous Sandra...
Works fabulously!!!
Off into the BOM HOF you go

Here is mine, started it last weekend but been busy so glad to find a little time to finish it today.
-
Good job, Sandra and Cheesecake. 0_0
-
Wonderful....
Off you pop Cheesecake, into the BOM HOF
-
I agree Sandra, picking the right fabrics is the hardest part of this block. You did a great job with yours though, it looks perfect.
-
Not my most successful block... ran out of fabric so made 3 different colour ways which I will hopefully make into a cushion ... all left overs from my recent quilts ... only had time to make them because I ran out of curtain lining for a customer order .. promise to try harder next month ... 2 weddings and a couple of curtain orders allowing.. ><
these are the first ones
attached photo.. hope it turns up the right way round
-
It looks lovely to me Veg! Are you making the actual Wedding dresses?
L :vintage:
-
No Lanty.. not these ones.. My nephew is marrying in early July .. have to alter the wedding dress and make dresses for My Mum .. done.. my daughter and myself ... pending.. and them I'm off to an indian wedding which I have posted about previously so pre wedding party evening dress .. Indian ceremony and wedding outfits for me my Mum and my sister.. I'm going to have to sort out a thread for all these...gulp ><

Quilting is going to have to take a back seat then! Looking forward to seeing your creations from the light side so to speak. I read through some of the posts on the wearabes threads and I'm still in awe of you clever people. I like looking at the clothes other peope make but I'm very much a cord trousers knitted jumper sort of person. Feel uncomfortable in other stuff and wouldn't have a clue how to make something that suited me. Those discussions that you have on why a pattern doesn't work fascinate me. Ususally I've thought it's ok lol

Thank you Vege, very, very nice

guilt free bomming .
Love it!!! :D
and off you toddle Plosh, into the BOM HOF you go....
-
It's obviously the day for it, Plosh. I was supposed to be going to my quilting class today but I'm having car trouble. An ideal opportunity to catch up as I am a little
several months behind, but I didn't. I finished this instead.
The smudge at the bottom of the photo is the :woof:'s nose. She decided to have a closer look.
-
So glad you girls are getting these done now
Superlative Pearl...
and into the BOM HOF you go
-
I'm half-way through making this. I only had time yesterday to cut out, I stitched the pieces today and am now pressing ready for final construction. I thought I'd made a mistake when I sewed and cut all the triangular pieces... but I hadn't... phew. Hopefully tomorrow mine will be done :)
-
Ok here we go, this months BOTM. These have been sewn together into two strips but then I'm leaving them until we've done all the blocks to see what I can make. So sorry about the ragged edges.
-
Finally finished my May B.O.M. I cut out more than I intended, after seeing 10 squares on the tute I just followed lol, I ended up cutting more to make a bigger piece! I used three fat quarters. 0_0 :vintage:
-
Love your colours, Lilian. Gorgeous.

Finally got there with my block for May
-
Beautiful block Twopence, gorgeous colours! :vintage: :)
-
Beautiful twopence very well done!
Did you reverse the swirly FF fabric to get the pale colour??
How ever you did it ..... Off into the BOM HOF you go now......
-
No Imi, it was two complementing Freedom Fabrics.
-
Oh, I didn't realise FF had a pale version ...
However they and the block are excellent Bravo you!
-
Bit meh about this one. Made my eyes cross. Pattern too busy.
-
Yes Fajita, Im afraid your fabric choice didn't help you here.... in fact it reminds me a lot of those colourblind tests!!!
The background should have been a plain solid or blender in a completely different colour to the ribbon with the twist should be a darker shade of whatever you chose for the ribbon, if you see what I mean.
Im surprised you could piece it actually very confusing, but I bet if you used some different fabrics following the guidelines above and having a look at others blocks you would feel a lot less Nyeh about it!
Still it is a block of the month, so off into the BOM HOF you go ....
-
I had another go.
Better fabric choice this time.
My brain still finds it hard to twist.
-
That's really nice Fajita :)
-
That is so much better ... well done for persevering!
I often have duff first blocks due to colour/ pattern etc (they usually end up on the back if I persevere and make that particular block into something)
So off you trot into the BOM HOF ...again
-
My brain still finds it hard to twist.
Do you mean hard to do or hard to see?
The 'twist' jumps out more when it is vertical because it is natural, like a hanging ribbon. When it's horizontal it just looks like a row of shapes (which it is of course)
-
My brain still finds it hard to twist.
As plosh says look at it hanging t'other way and as I say...squint! It's very unattractive but it's easier to see tones and shading. :ninja: 0_0
-
What I mean is, when I'm putting the bits together, even though I have the shapes cut out, and an example in front of me, I still have to trace the edges with my fingers to 'see' it's orientation. Very weird.
I do do the squinting. It makes a big difference to what you see.
-
Given the size of some of the other blocks I've decided to complete this one and not use it as two pieces - if I do get to sew them all together!!!
-
Use it as two borders at the side ???
Very, very nice Mali
Off you go, into the BOM HOF with you ...
