Title: And FINALLY .... The Challenge
Post by: Iminei on August 30, 2020, 09:01:03 AM
A CHALLENGE FOR YOU ...

As I prepared Septembers Blocks I realised I had a huge amount of scraps,
half-made units, Orphan strips and Frankenblocks from previous months lying around,

so I decided to use them up in an additional

 CHALLENGE block  (https://photos.app.goo.gl/JRmjEji2wxnyiwpk8)

for this years BOM !!!

My Challenge to you is to take your scrap fabrics, orphan units and Frankenblocks
and using ONE shape only fill a 12 1/2" block.

You could choose  ...

Rectangles, Squares, Triangles,
HSTs, QSTs, HRTs,
Pentagons, Hexagons, Octagons
Tumblers, Clamshells, Diamonds
Stars, Strips, Geese

Would anyone be brave enough to choose and applique circles??

Obviously the larger your shapes the less work, but less impact too ...

A 12" block filled with four 6" squares would be a little dull ...
unless you mixed it up a bit with the squares being pieced from your chosen shape?

Looking at my pile of scraps I thought I would fill my block with HST's (You know me and HSTs)

Six across by Six down ... 2 1/2" Hsts finishing at 2" across the block ...
and then I thought, thats a bit large, lets make them 1 1/2" finished,
Eight across by Eight down ... Gor Blimey I realised ... That'll  mean 64 of the lil devils !!

I took all the odd cuts and scraps and made as many HST's as I could.
I cut some of my practice geese up and cut down some larger HSTs
and eventually came up with this .....

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I looked at the pile of scraps and there were plenty more
so decided to give the Tumbler block a go and soon enough I had this

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

So I'm challenging you to PLAY with your scraps,
choose a shape and fill a 12 1/2" block with it.

ENJOY !!!

It is finitched and it looks as if I made it up completely from scraps from my scrap bag. Can't think why.  ><

Dunnit.  Not thrilled with it, but here it is.

I had a lot of strips that were 1.5" or 2.5" wide, so I chose to use 1" x 2" rectangles.  I wanted something with a diagonal feel to it to balance the others (I have the layout planned, assuming I use all the blocks).

I love that but I’m not sure mine would be squares.  I’m wondering if you could do it like a trip around the world, with strips sewn together then made into a tube.

I'm doing strips - I seem to have more of them than squares or triangles. Very simples though

That's exactly what I was thinking. I should have waited and copied everybody else due to lack of imagination.  :ninja:

Post by: Bjay on September 17, 2020, 18:12:10 PM
Well I've started it. Using strips because that's what I have a lot of in scraps- no idea where I am going after that, A few ideas but will just fiddle then sew

Not happy with this but I had strips of different widths so I thought a scrappy Bargello

Just have to decide which way up to put it

PS @wrenkins it was you that gave me the idea

Glad I'm useful for something.
That's a good use of scraps. I really struggled with it because my scraps were weeny.

I had some iddy-biddy, tiny scraps and decided to try this with them.

It's not terribly exciting and it's not going to be used in the finished quilt, but I quite like it all the same.  :)

:o @Sandra! That's amazing! If I'd made that I'd put that on the front and the others on the back!

Ha, ha  0_0...sitting amongst the other blocks, it just looks really plain and boring. You've seen how loud and bright the rest of it is.
Thought about using it on the back....

It's a bit untidy. It's not my neatest work.  :S
Pleased to have tried it though.

I was trying foundation paper piecing a few weeks ago and was doing one that looked a bit like a tree. I tried out a few different colours but then I used strip sets I had left over from a quilt and it turned out so cool looking. That is the middle part, the sides are made up with hst from the same quilt.

Me too, Beej!

I thought, Crumbs, how sad would it be if I did every block in 2020 except one  :o
Bit of a cheat, I suppose, but yer tis.  I used every fabric from the blocks I've made at least once in each sector so it's a sort of reminder thingy.

Eta, Oh no I didn't, just noticed one missing from bottom left  Oh well.

As soon as you said it, I could see it, but I had been peering at it for a while. How sad is my life, that it was bugging me at all?

I know perfectly well that if I hadn't mentioned it, no-one would have noticed.

... and finally , my extra block made of lots of fiddly little squares and triangular left overs.   Had to fudge it slightly with a bit of sashing and triangle corners, but it’s ok, I think and a good use of all my little bits accidentally cut out for the last block.  :D  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Hi Imimei, my repeated cahllenge block isn't in the HOF and please could you remove the other challenge block(bargello) Which I really don't like - cushion cover i think for that one.

I now have all blocks sandwiched and 5 to quilt which I will do in one massive quilting attempt :S

This tumbling block came out small so allow me to introduce you to the sashing fabric. A bit bright I know but then again this yellow is not subtle!

Love that fabric, Beej.

I might need to get some for the backing of my other quilt-to-be because the plain one I ordered is more like hi-viz jacket colour  :faints:

Oh thank you both @Iminei and @Flobear
It was reduced (of course) and buying on line i thought it may be bright (which it is) but i like it against all the yellowy blocks

Something strangely relaxing unpicking a load of quilting that had gone wrong and looked awful  :D

BUT

Does anyone more experienced than me know how to get rid of all the little quilting holes?
Title: Re: And FINALLY ....
Post by: Iminei on October 01, 2020, 18:43:09 PM
Rub the fabric with the red bally thing on the Qunpick, or just rub the fabric together a bit.
Title: Re: And FINALLY ....
Post by: Surest1tch on October 01, 2020, 19:47:40 PM
@ the tailors we used to steam the fabric and rub very gently with the side of a (clean) coin.

Post by: Lilian on October 01, 2020, 20:53:36 PM
I've found that a little steam from the iron usually gets rid of the holes.

They disappear in the wash, I’ve found.
Title: Re: And FINALLY ....
Post by: Bjay on October 01, 2020, 21:56:36 PM
Oh my,  basically rubbing it lightly with steam. I'll have a go

Thank you all - I'll start with rubbing and then steaming  :D :D

A gentle wash will definitely remove any holes ... ask me how I know?
Title: Re: And FINALLY ....
Post by: Kenora on October 07, 2020, 13:35:10 PM
A bit late replying - but I find if the holes are really stubborn, running my fingernail along them gently helps realign the fibres back into their original weave. :)
