In the wardrobe / Re: Wardrobe switchover time?
« on: Yesterday at 17:36:05 »
When I drove to work this morning it was 4.5C and there was snow on the Pennines.  I was wearing my wool blend trousers. :)

The Haberdashery / Re: Portable sewing kit

This is such a good idea @Sara-S. My late father-in-law used to make prototypes for hard-backed cases like this in the 70's/80's and would send some if them over to DH complete with the foam inserts ready for cutting. We have our old SLR cameras in one and DH uses others for specific tools and fishing equipment.

I was here, once I got back from a bike ride :)
I'm making a toile for some ITS Eddystone jeans. I spent some time at the weekend making pattern adjustments and cutting out. Today I've been thread tracing.

That's an interesting tip re the Avalon @Elnnina. I get tunnelling when coverstitching fine jersey, so I'll try some next time. Thank you.

That looks amazing. Love the differences achieved by using just two colours.

Technical Help / Re: do I need to lengthen the back bodice?
« on: March 18, 2024, 16:17:43 PM »
It looks as though your  fabric is wider at the front of the shoulder seams  than at the back.
Is this due to having raised the shoulders at the front to get rid of the gaping that you had? If you have raised the shoulders at the front then reduce the back shoulder seam allowance by the same amount as you increased the front shoulder seam allowance.
ETA I was also wondering the same as what @Ouryve has said: you appear to have some
pulling underneath the arms - possibly due to the seam being pulled forward.

Machine Accessories / Re: Scissors
« on: March 15, 2024, 14:18:55 PM »
Rotary cutters are for using against a ruler, so straight cuts only.  Scissors and shears are for cutting complex or rounded shapes.
I've sewn for a long time, using scissors for cutting out but nowadays I always use a rotary cutter in slippery fabric. I don't find it a problem to cut curves accurately. Notches are always cut outwards so I use small scissors for those.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Where are you all buying your fabric?
« on: March 13, 2024, 19:25:29 PM »
I've just received a lovely linen/viscose print (John Louden) from Pound Fabrics. £8.75/m which I think is very reasonable. This will be a dress for me. Also 4m of white muslin at £2/m to make a couple of summer shirts for DH.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I bought some of the very same linen/viscose print a couple of weeks ago @Lachica. Sadly, I didn't buy from Pound fabrics
It has softened up really well after washing. I'm planning to make a top with mine.

@Elnnina I have to watch my large cones of woolly nylon in case they tilt whilst in use.  This sometimes results in the thread becoming snagged and then splitting or becoming too tight to run through the machine properly.  I have one particular cone that seems to have a burr on it somewhere and so I have to watch that one especially carefully.  I really should throw it away but can't quite bring myself to do that.

@Elnnina It's  very frustrating isn't it?  I find that my coverstitch machine doesn't like it if any of the stitching veers off of the  hem onto the single layer of the fabric. I use washaway hem tape as I find this gives me a better finish and wooly nylon thread in the looper.

I managed to sew the shoulder seams of a  Sinclair Harper cardigan on my overlocker and that was it today.

Edited as I misread @Bjay 's post :)
