In the wardrobe / Re: can't decide if I need FBA
« on: March 16, 2021, 21:06:49 PM »
If your high bust is 34" and your full bull bust is 37" you need to choose the pattern size with full bust of 34" ( size 12). Then you will need to add a total of 3" so do a 1.5" FBA on the pattern piece. This will make garment fit across the shoulders and armholes much better and give you the required fullness in the bust.

@RachelB  I have to do an FBA and after much trial and error have found what works for me. I don't think it's an exact science and in your shoes I would most likely do a toile with a 1 inch FBA (pattern front is half of the total front so 1 inch on that piece will give you a 2 inch total FBA) and go from there.

Yes, @Iminei, I had the wrong stitch in mind. I've just managed to sit at my machine for the first time in several weeks and can see the stitch that @Gernella is referring to I think. It shows on my Pfaff as a normal straight stitch but under the quilt stitches. It is indeed a regular straight stitch but does a neater tie-off at the beginning and end of the stitching than the no 1 straight stitch.

@Gernella The straight quilt stitch is supposed
to imitate a hand sewn quilt stitch. If you use clear thread in the needle and whichever colour you want on the top of the quilt in the bobbin, then tighten the upper tension, the machine stitches forward, backward, then forward again on each stitch and pulls the bobbin thread through to the top of the work.

Abakhan Fabrics are worth a try.  I bought some when we were allowed out to play for a brief moment last year.

@annieeg I have this machine - the feed dogs will move back up once you switch the machine off and then on again.

Re the thread jam - have you also taken out the black bobbin case?  If there is the tiniest piece of thread underneath it that will need to be removed.  Even if you can't see anything it's always worth a clean.  You may possibly need to rethread the machine again after all that.

Oh what a shame re the £10 @annieeg.  I hope you manage to resolve the cutting blade issue.

@annieeg try giving the cutting blade a good clean with a little brush (the sort that often comes with machines).  I find that helps when mine stops cutting the bobbin thread.  You'll need to remove the needle plate to do this and be careful as the blade is quite sharp.  I hope you enjoy your new machine :)

Perhaps you need some dolls @Celia.  Is it you who makes teddy bears?  If so, they might like some jumpers :D

Sewing Machines / Re: Pfaff Buttonholes for different machines

It is when you are used to it @coffeeandcake
Sometimes your fabric dictates a larger hole than specified for your button, so then easier to add a mm or  two on.

That's a good point @Gernella  :)

I've got the Pfaff QE 4.2 which has a sensormatic buttonhole foot.  It's more bother than it's worth in my opinion. It usually takes me ages to attach the cable into the machine because it's awkwardly placed and that's after measuring the diameter of a button and entering the measurement into the machine.  It's so much easier to stick a button into the back of a foot and just sew.

The Haberdashery / Re: Is Swedish tracing paper worth it?

I've gone through my Amazon account and discovered that I bought it from Amazon.com. If you search Medical exam paper roll on the .com site it's the Diagnostics Direct brand.  I definitely didn't pay for shipping though.  It's currently showing as $17.99 for the product + $48 for shipping!

I use medical exam paper for tracing, though it's definitely not like the stuff that's used on exam beds here.  It's excellent for pattern tracing.  I will try to find out where I bought it.
