The Style Arc Casey coat, I have had to pattern and fabric for a couple of months but now Spring is approaching ;) i think it is time to start. I have got as far as taking a photo and cannot decide which zip to go with, yellow or grey?
-
Love the fabric. It's really cute.
Yellow or grey? Mmm not sure. Looking forward to seeing which one you choose.
-
I would go with grey, but the yellow is very striking.
-
That fabric is really nice. I think the gray zipper matches a bit better.
-
Yes the grey zip. I'm not a big fan of contrasting zips.
-
I'd go with the yellow zip as it's such a fun fabric :D
-
Grey. The yellow is nice but the grey is more wearable.
-
Yellow, such fun
-
Another vote for yellow. Is there scope for any other yellow "accents"? Binding? Pocket edges?
Edit: Just looked at the pattern - yellow top stitching? That would look great with the yellow zip.
-
Personally, I like the grey, but then go with yellow accents as Bodge says.
Lovely fabric...

I quite like the yellow. As the fabric is a fun one I think it works well.
-
That fabric, crying out for yellow. I don't normally like yellow but a zip in yellow would win every time for me.

Well spent a couple of hours today cutting out pattern and fabric, my brain hurts from getting the pattern match, reminder to self, stick to plain fabric.
Another Style Arc pattern that has errors, tells you to cut 2 collars but you only need one, pattern pieces that go together but notches either do not match or are absent on one piece. I might be wrong but the more i look at the facings the more convinced i am they are the wrong way.
-
I'm sorry you're having errors in SA @sewmuchmore ... I've yet to have a drafting error in mine. I don't generally follow their instructions though ... just take a look at the drawing and do my own preferred methods. I did have one top that had a missing notch for the sleeve (the part that should match at the shoulder seam) but otherwise they've all been fine. I wonder if it's an issue with their grading of different sizes.
-
@mudcat i generally don't follow instructions but i do read through them before i start, as i mentioned else were the issues i have with SA are not major and as an experienced sewer they are not a problem but for the inexperienced they could be confusing. Plus even though i don't need the notches etc i expect them to be right, after all i am paying good money for the patterns. It does make me wonder if SA has pattern testers?

Nearly finished, was just about to put the zip in today and realised that the ladies on the collar where all upside down, so that had to come off.
I have gone with the yellow zip and yellow topstitching. The coat is going together very nicely and do like the shape, i am thinking it would also make a dress with a bit of hacking, watch this space.
Should get it finished tomorrow and will post pics.

I really enjoyed making my Casey - and sewing with softshell is wonderful.
-
I do like this, and really glad that you went with the yellow zip. Looking forward to seeing the completed garment.
-
@Acorn how did you finish the seams that aren't top stitched? i.e. around the edge of the facing. A the moment mine are raw but i am thinking a Hong Kong finish
-
I left the edges of the facing raw - it doesn't fray, and is still as crisp as it was when I finished it. I felt that doing anything would add bulk. Everywhere else is topstitched.
I added a hood to mine after a while - I used the hood part from another pattern and put buttonholes on the hood part and buttons on the collar.
-
@Acorn i did think about a hood but i am not a lover my other thought was a sou'wester hat. Oh and the pockets are not overgenerous so i am going to make a little crossbody bag for all the essential: poo bags, dog
treats bribes and car keys.
-
I originally made myself a matching hat in this pattern from Gina Renee Designs, which is just 6 identical pieces...

... but it kept blowing off in the wind!
I am intending to sew up the side seam pockets and add some patch pockets in a better place at some point as well.

What a pigs ear i have made today. Not at all happy with the collar and i have taken it out it out now 4 times. Trouble is when the second one went in i did all the grading and under stitching and there is only so many times you can unpick softshell, plus because i graded seams one side of my zip in a bit distorted at the top due to all the unpicking. :'(
After spending 4 hours today and not getting any were i am not sure what i am going to do with it. sigh.
I feel i need to unpick all the zip and facing (and the under stitching) and start again. I'll see what tomorrow brings.
