No, don't be silly, I'm NOT in - but I do have a question/thought.

I don't get the idea of these, surely you'll probably have to wash it (almost) every time you use it?  My coasters are always dirty from drips.  Also it says they can accommodate cake or biscuits too - surely more muck on them, and you can't just wipe them can you?

Please don't think I'm criticising, I am genuinely puzzled by these - or maybe as I get older I want things to be more functional.

I'm not sure about joining in with this - I'd feel terrible if I'd sent someone a coaster/mug rug but got a set of place mats in return.

Post by: BrendaP on August 28, 2019, 09:57:19 AM
I'll think about this - I agree with @Bodgeitandscarper about rug mugs being rather impractical; epecially patchwork ones that are inevitably uneven in thickness and thus would cause a mug to wobble.

What is a Mug Rug (https://thepatchsmith.blogspot.com/2012/11/what-is-mug-rug.html)

The first image in that link is beach huts - and  I know how to do them #2 (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,8108.msg133414.html#msg133414)  ;)  but they are summery not autumnal.

I made a mug rug in a workshop at Festival of Quilts a few years ago. It is on my desk and in use daily (well, during office hours) and there is no wobble involved.

It's called a MugRug swap, so if somebody sends me a placemat, it's nice, but I will sew only a MugRug, I swear, because I have no time for a (complex) placemat. :P

@Iminei : I am in  :D

I’ve got some cup mat size mug rugs that we use - no wobble at all! Bigger ones are also great for underneath plant pots etc. They get thrown in the wash once a month and all is good.

I want to join in but Iminei can we make it clear that people should only expect 1 mug rug in swap? It just seems unfair otherwise. I would happily do placemats but not in first few weeks back to school

I’m in but is there a set size for a mug rug?
Title: Re: Autumn Equinox Mug Rug Swap
Post by: Sheilago on August 28, 2019, 14:31:34 PM
I’m in too.

We could say one bigger mug rug ( 6” x10”?) or 2 coaster size ones.

I have made sets of these as gifts: usually 4 coasters and one bigger table mat sized one. I wouldn’t put cakes etc directly onto the mats. As coasters they’re fine and last a while before they need washed.
Title: Re: Autumn Equinox Mug Rug Swap
Post by: Sakar on August 28, 2019, 14:35:53 PM
I usually make them 14x20cm =  5,5x8 inch or a little bit smaller because I don't have so much space left on my desk ;)
Title: Re: Autumn Equinox Mug Rug Swap
Post by: Sakar on August 28, 2019, 14:52:34 PM
Just finish the draft :D If there is a special size required, please set the rules, otherwise I will start to sew in the next minutes days  :P

I've had a quick look at coasters on the John Lewis website and they seem to be about 4x4" or a little bigger. Perhaps a mug rug could be twice the size of a coaster - half the space for the mug and half the space for biscuits.

John Lewis also had some round coasters

(By the way, I've decided I'm in on this swap and happy to post internationally.)

@Lisalou , when we swapped cushion covers, we knew who our cushionee (technical term) was, as we posted our favourite/unfavourite colours.  As we have an Autumnal theme, I guess it isn't necessary to know who we are making for.

And please don't stress about your mug rug.  I'm sure it'll be received with delight.

Lovely to see so much enthusiasm for this .... Excellent!

You only have to make ONE Mug Rug ...

If you want to make a set of coasters / mug rugs that is your decision and yours alone ...
You must not expect anything but one mug rug in return ok?

I've been playing as I have not done anything like this before  and have easily made 3 MR's / coasters today ...
They really are quick and easy .. Mine are measuring 6" square ... easy to cut using my 6 1/2" ruler and are turned out, no binding required..

They may be involved in the swap, and then again, they may not! Im practicing!

PS @BrendaP  ... No wobble on the ones Ive made either!

Mr Google says they are usually between 4.5 x 8 inches up to 8x12 inches ( cup and biccy) but really they can be any size you like. I usually use Insulbrite waddling but you don't have to
Just thought I'd put in my twopennoth

I wouldn’t worry about the finish, I’m sure it would be fine. if you enjoy making it and taking part then that’s all that counts.

@Celia Please don’t let not being a quilter put you off joining in. I for one would be delighted to receive a mug rug made using a technique I can’t do myself, such as embroidery or appliqué to name just two.

Deadline for registering your interest is midnight tonight, then I can pair you up this week.

Deadline for posting is 20-22nd September ... depending on which postage service you choose.

It would be nice if the mug rugs arrive about the same time for everyone around the time of the Autumn Equinox on the 23rd ... obviously the further afield they go, the less predictable their delivery times.

Do join in Low!

I’ve finished mine as I wanted to do it before I went back to work. Then I can try and time a slot to go to the post office closer to the time. Ours has such rubbish opening hours that it is impossible to go there if you have a full time job!

There is not one too far from work in central London luckily so I usually work out when my quietest day is likely to be and nip out for 20 minutes.

Just as well because it's not great. I've never done a proper mitred binding before and turns out a mug rug is not the best place to start! It's terrible!  0_0

Fabulous WAW!!!

Just remember, you can use any technique you chose, make it any size you want as long as it can hold a mug / glass /  teapot.
You can make just one Mug Rug or a set if you want to, just accept and expect that you will only be receiving ONE!

Drop me a pm titled Mug Rug swap address with your correct name and address and I'll pair you off in the next week or so

We are aiming to get them posted in the days before the Autumn Equinox, hopefully to arrive  on the 23rd September.

A quick recap ...

You make a mug rug, any size you want (I'm doing 6 " coasters) but big enough to to hold a mug, glass, teapot, mug and biccie (?)

You can make one or a set ... But please only expect to receive ONE in return

You can use any technique you want, piecing, applique, cross stitch, machine or hand embroidery, FPP, redwork etc etc etc

The Only theme is AUTMUNAL ... this could be your colour scheme or subject matter if embroidering/appliqueing, Fpp ...
pumpkins, autumn leaves, autumal tree, Conkers, Toadstool, Squirrel, Fox, Witches

Post to your drawn partner ... some of you will be posting abroad so please post in good time for it to reach your partner ... to arrive around the time of the autumnal equinox, 23rd September.

She looked through her stash of suitable fabric likely from the U.S. years ago....there's an autumnal slightly sparkly fat quarter....hmmmmm....now someone mentioned toadstools...yep....have a die for toadstools....cut out in felt and hand stitched on a 'pillowcase'.....there would be no binding....now what is this stuff that goes in the middle....some kind of wadding I don't have....but I do have simple wadding, somewhere.......so I guess Imi and WAW have press ganged me into signing up.....edited to add Pearl as she influenced me too...

@wrenkins  Binding on small makes is notoriously difficult (well I find it so) so Im turning mine out, slip-stitching them closed and then adding a row of stitching 1/4" from the edge.
Hurrah!
Mine has no binding either @hernibs after my first debacle. I just did what @Iminei said.

I've nearly finished one but a couple of areas are a bit iffy.  It will do as a prototype.  Second one is half way and I stopped where I messed up last time so going to start again with a clear head. Learning new stuff.

On the other note eldest survived his first day of high school, even sent me a text to let me know he got on the bus home ok.  He also told me he was desperate for the loo so I made sure the route was clear and seat up ;-)  He's learning new stuff too - if your bus is one of the first ones, make sure to go before last lesson!

Augh - golly gee - what fun this is...not.....I have not a clue how to add wadding to anything so mine is going to be a bit of a disaster....however I have just to 'invisibly' stitch the open end together and then embellish however leaving room for a mug and a slab of cake!!

Normally hernibs you use the wadding/batting to make a sandwich with front and back fabric layers. From what you have said you used the birthing method (turning inside out) to finish your edges. I did this too and what I do is place on the back of my front piece and imagine that is just one piece of fabric when I attach it to the back piece. So under my machine when stitching the edges together I would have batting, front piece then back piece (RST). Turn inside out and batting is in the middle. Hope that makes sense?

I get rather overexcited about these swaps. I'm even more excited about this one because everyone's in!
The reluctants, the ne'er do wells, the clueless learners, some lightsiders, the faraways.
It's going to be great!
I have to confess to trying new techniques...and failing. My plastic nasty machine does not like so many layers and tends to eat them...especially the walking foot!  ><
Get your addresses to Imi please before I explode!

It's great @Sandra. I made a thing and put all the 'scraps' to one side for the bin but I realised they were quite usable so I sewed them all together too. It takes about two minutes in TSP time (about 1/2 an hour in real life!).

ETA 1/2 an hour once you have every sewing thing you own strewn about you!  :S

Good news!

I have an Idea.  :)

I've scribbled down a couple of very rough sketches while I was shortening several pairs of jeans this morning...and I think I like the look of what I might do.

Think I'll do both ideas and see which is the better of the two. Just got to figure out how to get the sizes right.  :ninja:
(And decide how big this mug rug's going to be. If I get carried away it might end up being the size of a table runner.  0_0)

Might dive back into the fabric stash. Think there's some fabric in there which I missed the other day.

I didn't take part but have been reading this thread avidly. Sewing slowed down and came to a grinding halt with Hurricane Dorian landing in Nova Scotia on Saturday. We fared well as we were well prepared.

I made a mug rug for our local fall fair. I found the pattern on the sew4home website. (https://sew4home.com/projects/table-linens/quilted-mug-rug-napkin-pocket) Somehow I found it when doing a big search on the internet. I was going to do a fall theme but the fall fabrics didn't talk to me so I did a lobster theme (fall fishing theme here). I had a lot of fun doing it.

I loved the idea of having a napkin in a pocket. You could add tea packets to the pocket if giving as a gift.

I can't wait to see what everyone made. You inspired me to try making this mug rug on my own.

That is beautiful....sadly mine is nothing like that.....but it's parcelled up and ready for posting to Bogwoppit.

@hernibs  Truthfully I had a hard time with fabric choice for this one. I am not a Maritimer so had to have help with fabric choices. I'm from cattle country and like western fabrics. The fall fabrics at the store were picked over and hard to match; too dark, too monotoned. You name it, it was that. Even the apple fabrics were not to my liking. So I stepped out of my comfort zone and went with lobsters.

I'm sure everyone did wonderful mug rugs. This comes from a person who really does not quilt and only does a quilting project once in a long time.

Ann - all of this kind of thing is out of my comfort zone....I am not and have not ever done any darkside sewing....I couldn't get that sort of thing exact enough....but I did try and made a simple 'rug'.

@hernibs  ... And if you recall that is exactly the point!

Any technique can be used to make the Mug Rug ... cross stitch, Embroidery,  piecing, FPP, EPP, applique, or just sewing !

@Ann  ... What a real pity you didnt join in, someone would have been overjoyed to receive that! Maybe next time ????
Title: Re: Autumn Equinox Mug Rug Swap

@Iminei maybe the next time.

@hernibs simple is always good. My first mug rugs are small and I folded the fabric to get the pattern. I used this idea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR_bjhkMk6Y) without the batting and hidden fabric. Many years later, we still use them. They are our favorite of all time and so simple to make.

I think I could manage that if I can buy fabric already in 5" squares?  I don't want to invest in fancy cutting boards or rotary cutters.  I did mean that I was hopeless at 'exact' in fabric but come calligraphy I have to measure millimetres and rule very intricate lines.....each to their own.
Thanks for the link, I have bookmarked it.

Edited to add that I went off to search for 5" squares - charm packs indeed....wonderful....see what you have done Imi......though time is very limited for me I would at some stage love to do these.

Yes @hernibs ..... There are so many ways to lure you in ...

Jelly rolls, 2 1/2" x 42 - 44" (width of fabric) cut strips
Charm squares, 5" cut squares
Layer cakes, 10" cut squares

and for the truly masochistic quilter ....

Mini Charms, 2 1/2" cut squares of fabric!

And all in a range of coordinating designs and colours!

If you do get a pre-cut pack, measure before you use them as some are not always quite the size they say they are (tho' mercifully few these days, Im thinking more of local emporia who put together their own pre-cuts)

Do you use high loft or low loft fusible batting for the mug mats?

Do you use high loft or low loft fusible batting for the mug mats?

@annieeg -- the discussion at the quilt shop the other day. A lady had the most lovely piece of batting for table runners, placemats, wall hangings, and mug rugs. She didn't know the name of it as the lady she bought it from wouldn't tell her. It was low loft and held it's shape well. The owner of the shop looked at her suppliers list and nothing matched. The lady is going to find out if she can to see if our shop can get it. I used a low loft batting I had bought about 6-8 years ago and it worked well. I would use a fusible or non fusible fleece as it is fairly low loft.

I got Lazy Girl Stiff Stuff for bags and will give it a try in a mug rug to see how it works. This will be the first time I  have used this but it is low loft, doesn't wrinkle, and comes highly recommended.

I posted mine yesterday @Puzzler . I think the idea is that so long as they arrive by Autumn equinox-ish it’s fine.

I would have liked to post on Monday of this week, but tomorrow is a local holiday so I want to improve my mug rug if I can...I'm not quite happy with the end product!! So, posting on Thursday morning, which is the 12th, I reckon it will arrive in time...I hope!

Yes the idea is to post (if you are in the UK, posting to the UK)  2, 3 or 4 days before the 23rd ... If you are posting abroad however, look up the estimated delivery dates and post as you think fit .... its not an exact science!

But we would like them to arrive and be opened around the same time ish ... I know that can be difficult as life/holidays can get in the way but hey ho!

When you receive your Mug Rug please do post a pic to say thank you to your Gifter and give us a peek.

I will of course be compiling The Big TSP Autumn Equinox Mug Rug Swap Album to showcase all your fabulous makes!

And for an alternative with the lasso, try a big eye easy threading needle where the threads slip into the eye through a tiny slit.

Yes, that would be optimum but Sakar did say she was off on holiday and considering a parcel I posted to her 2 and a bit weeks ago still hasnt reached her, she posted early.

I am hoping that MOST of the packages will arrive in the week of the 23rd.

(I think next time I may only release the addresses a day or so before posting should start.)

So post in time for the parcel to reach your giftee around the 23rd September Please ....

Obvs if you are posting further afield you will have to use your judgement.

Im going to be wrapping mine and getting it ready for posting mid to end next week.

Finished and will be sending tomorrow. As it is going quite a long way, I hope it will arrive in time. Post can take a long time or no time at all, it really depends on how lucky you are. I have sent letters to the UK which have arrived within five days, and others which have taken three weeks - and this is not dependant on the time of year - just a matter of luck!

I hope my swapee likes it - I certainly enjoyed making, and I tried a new technique, which was fun. Perfect it ain't, but I like it, so hopefully...

I am very nervous of making one for someone else I cannot tell you how stressed I have been over it. If I tell you I used to make made to measure knitwear for other people, that was sold at very high prices I cannot understand why I am so uptight.

Hoping to make it today, this is the second try, The first looked fine until I tried to bind it and then nothing looked right, it slowly got smaller and smaller as I tried a couple of different things, in the end I think it will be the size of a glass mat if I am lucky.
Title: Re: Autumn Equinox Mug Rug Swap

As I said before ... binding small projects is a sure path to madness!

Face it or turn it out and topstitch!
Title: Re: Autumn Equinox Mug Rug Swap
Post by: Celia on September 15, 2019, 08:50:27 AM
Funny @Iminei that was my first try to bag out, my problem was the batting I used was quite thick and I managed not to catch on one the edges of the fabric properly, then tried again and it got smaller and then did not look straight so then it got smaller again, when I have more time I will post a photo but today I am going to start afresh.

@Celia  ...

Cut the wadding 1/4 smaller than the top and bottom before you stitch ... You can dab a dob of glue to keep it in place (or maybe you have already stitched a design on the top piece and wadding before assembling the piece)
Then, when you stitch 1/4"  from the edges, you might just catch the wadding in a few places to further anchor it BUT you wont have a thick piece of wadding past the stitching which will hinder your turning it through. You can also trim any excess wadding away before your turn it.

And remember to cut off the corners before turning.

Post by: wrenkins on September 15, 2019, 09:24:38 AM
@Celia my first one wasn't great. I liked the picture but the finish was shocking! I'd tried to bind it (my first ever go at binding) and it looked ok from the front but the back was awful!
My second one I bagged but I didn't know all that stuff that Imi just said so I kind of winged it and ended up with a lil bit of hand finishing.  :S
Nobody is going to judge. It's just a bit of a laugh among friends and the chance to try something new. I tried a little bit of facing too (even though I didn't know that's what it was called till just now!  0_0
Personally speaking when any of my swaps have arrived I've loved them and thought 'awww someone made that specially for me'.  <3

Cripes! I have no idea what ‘bagging out’ means.

I cut my backing an 1” larger than the front, two layers of thin batting the same size as the mug rug front and folded the backing over twice, mitring the corners and finishing it with a slipstitch. I am really impressed at the finished mats so far. As Wrenkins says, it’s a bit of fun among friends.

I posted mine on Saturday morning - it will still be in the postbox but will be collected tomorrow.

My recipient will get two.....both imperfect but it's a start for me.  I sent for the wrong wadding - low loft and now realise that it is too thick and is only fusible ( I think I have every kind of interlining stuff but not what I need, what's new?)  on one side - duh - so await the correct double sided fusible and hopefully the next one will be better.....however I mostly did enjoy making these except when I took a photo I realised they are anything but straight...there is more to this than meets the eye.  If you want to be picky take a photo - that'll show the faults up quick smart!

@Kitten and anyone else who is mithering about this ..

Perfection isnt the Point!

The point is that someone somewhere has given up their time and effort to make you a lil something.

I know whenever I have received something handmade (and often out of the blue) the feeling I have had that someone made something just for me, is indescribable and it lasts ...

Every single day I see and use the thread catcher that our darling @QuiltySisty made for me and think there is at least one person out there cares. Every time I go into the front room and spy TSP bear and his buddy, I smile and think of our dear Vege .... Those feelings cant be bought in a shop and make my world at least just a lil bit better than before.

In all our swaps ... has anyone been less than delighted with what they have received ??? I think not.... You Girls are wonderous making machines, each with your own special skills.

Oh dear.

I read the first page which said posting BY Autumn Equinox and have been working to that deadline.
Mine will definitely not reach the recipient by Sunday as it’s going overseas.

Sorry!  :S

No problem @WildAtlanticWay ,

maybe you could pm your giftee and let them know it might be a lil late to save them worrying that its  gone astray .

Mine will probably not make the post until tomorrow, yesterday I decided I didn’t like either of the ones I had done enough to send them to anyone, so I started again and except  for the size, it s a little large for a mug rug I an pleased with it, I even bound it :loveit:
Don’t get me wrong its not perfect but better.

My problem now is it not fit in the envelope I was going to send it in and as I am at work today it will be tomorrow before I can do anything about it.

Having received a package from DDDorset yesterday I wasn't thinking about another one landing, but today Mr Postman came bearing another.  Thankyou @Cheesecake for 2 gorgeous mug rugs.  Pictures will be revealed on Sunday.
I'm just off down to the Post Office with mine.

Thank you, to both @Puzzler and @Iminei  :)  :*

Lovely work from both of you. I said, 'Oh, wow!', out loud when I opened the envelope.
I don't think I'll be able to bung my mugs of tea on them though.  :S I don't want to risk spoiling them.

I've been to the Post Office, so my mug rug make is on it's way now.

Both are exquisite and I lost my breath as I opened them ... thank you, thank you, thank you.

You ladies know whom you are but I will keep my secrets just a lil longer til we reveal our gifts this weekend.

I received mine today and they are perfect!  The fabrics and stitching are just the kind that I love.  They could not have been more suited to my taste if the maker knew that she was making for me.  Thank you so much, dear gifter.  No mug will be getting anywhere near these, or the exquisite mug rats that I received from 'the Phantom Mug Rug Swapper of Old Blandford Forum.'

Thank you both so much.  <tries not to cry>

@Sandra  I got home from a runaround to hospital (not for me) and chemist feeling a bit off, the hospital I had to go to doesn’t bring back good memories for me, walked in the door to find the post I too didn’t think I would open the envelope until the weekend and that lasted about 1 minute, I will post photos later but just to say I am thrilled it is beautiful.

Then I found a second envelope from Dorset thank you soooo much.

I have loved taking part and I think it has been good for me too, it’s so lovely to feel so many people are joining in.  Thank you Imi for starting it :toast:
What’s next

I received the most beautiful autumnal decorated envelope yesterday.  Thank you Hernibs, that alone must have taken you ages!

Contents are amazing too - so different from what I did myself.  I'll wait to post pics, especially as we've had a few more days of summer weather so the change of season can wait.

You are welcome - forgive the imperfections from the total novice.

I see an interesting trend in this thread. Many of us are pretty harsh critics of our own work (myself included) and delighted by the gifts we have received.  They may well have flaws, but we see their beauty and effort, paying little or no attention to those flaws.

@Sara-S my dad was a difficult man to please or impress but he had a saying. 'Never criticise or laugh at anyone doing their best'. Quite something coming from him and all the more profound for it.  <3

I think all 'crafters' are hard on themselves.

I think that's is right, and also crafters are very appreciative of handmade gifts as they recognise the work that has gone into it.

@Iminei I received mine yesterday and posted mine off on Wednesday afternoon.  It's a UK address so should arrive without a problem.

Had no internet since Wednesday morning so I've been very quiet.  New router arrived just before lunch and its taken me ages to get it set up.
