Title: Threads Magazine - June/July 2019 issue 203
Post by: Elnnina on June 16, 2019, 14:37:54 PM
I picked up my copy of Threads magazine yesterday, and the main thing that caught my eye was a 10 page article called Get Started with Draping, oh she does go into so much detail I shall have to try this.  Then there is an interesting article called Trench Coat Appeal - 6 pages covering finer details which looks interesting.  Lastly an article about The Double-Eye Machine needle - this explores its decorative and utilitarian functions.  I had only heard about this needle from Twopence earier in the  week, sounds like a useful addition to the needle collection.

I do enjoy reading Threads, there is normally always something of interest, and of course where there are diagrams to follow these are easy to follow.  I certainly won't be parting with my copies of this magazine, they are very well read as well.

@Elnnina I haven’t got round to reading mine yet.  Skimmed the when it arrived.  I have to say I am hopeless at draping.  :).  I don’t have vision.
I have all copies of Threads going back to about number 74 or so. Every so often I get one or two out to go through again.

Well Ohsewsimple,  I had an elderly friend who learnt that she had terminal cancer and started to try and sort her affairs and sewing life out - she did well, and I am the lucky recipient of her Threads magazines and continued to have this magazine saved at the newsagent she used in a neighbouring village.  As I have said I will often go and have a read, and generally find something that I am particularly interested in, and then found that sometimes the articles referred back to another article that was much further back than those I had.  This niggled me, and then I thought about the DVD that Threads produce and managed to get one through Amazon UK, it is brilliant as it goes right back to the beginning and you can actually print off the articles if you want to so very useful when you are trying to copy the instructions when altering a pattern to become something else.  The version I have goes back to 1985 and up to 2015 so that is issues 1 - 182.  At the time I was having hydrotherapy sessions once a week, and for quite a few weeks I was unable to attend, so the money saved mounted up and I used this to treat myself - well worth it too!!!!

Back in December/January 2014 there was an article by Connie Crawford called Add a Princess Seam and the article referred to two slopers that Connie had produced, a shoulder princess seam and an armhole princess seam and these slopers came in multiple sizes with the emphasis on fitting the shoulder, neck and bust particularly on those who are full busted.  I got in touch with Connie's business and bought these two sloper patterns, and so far I am delighted with them - they are still in toile stage at the moment, but I have cut out four tops in either cotton or poly cotton and am about ready to start sewing them - I am anticipating some hot weather like last year and want to be prepared.

Then even further back  June July 2008 and August/September 2008 there was a very interesting article by Kathleen Cheetham called From Sloper to Shirt and the follow up  Using your Sloper to Finish your Shirt - the resulting garment looks brilliant and again it is something on my list to do.

As my late friend said Threads is the very best sewing magazine around and I know I would be lost without having this wonderful resource at my finger tips.

@Elnnina I have been trying very hard to order the double eye needles this afternoon from Barnyarns.  I've gone to their website via the link to double eye needles in their email and gone into the website directly but cannot find double eye needles just quick threading ones which don't have two eyes.  I think that I'll ring them tomorrow but won't be able to use the discount offer which finishes tonight.  :(

Twopence the Schmetz double eye machine needle is available via Amazon UK a pack of five for £2.99 and free postage.
There is also an offer for £4.99 buy 2 get 1 free plus a free needle threader and postage.

Whilst Threads is an American magazine they were saying that these needles could be obtained from Schmetz or Bernina - so that would be Bernina USA.  So just maybe they are available over here from Bernina UK?
