The Show Must Go On / stretch collars
« on: April 12, 2019, 21:14:55 PM »
This is really an update since a couple of people helped me with advice on this collar. I made a leotard with a stand up mandarin collar, in case anyone is interested this is what I did:

I drafted a mandarin collar as you would for woven fabric and split it at the CB and added a bit extra at the CB for seams etc. I made it with the same fabrics for lining the inside as the outside, though next time, because it is a bit bulky, I think I'd just use a stiff power net inside. The collar pieces are sewn RS to RS and under stitched along the top seam to the inside. All stitching was in ZZ.
I put the collar on to the main leotard applying a little stretch but not as much as I usually would for a full leotard collar. The I topstitched the collar seam allowance to the leotard, to help it stand up. It works nicely.

The Show Must Go On / stand up collars
« on: January 08, 2019, 15:20:14 PM »
I'm in the middle of creating stand up collars for a couple of leotards and am just wondering what you all think of my construction plan - and if anyone has any better way to do it.

These collars will be open, rather than the type that encircle the neck. Ive attached two photos of Polina Schmatko and Ksenya Moustafaeva in leotards with collars that are a little bit similar to what I am aiming for in terms of the open front but mine will be simpler!. (These amazing leotards were made by the Russian designer/maker Svetlana Gerasimova).

One will be a bit like a mandarin collar that is open at the front - very simple. The other leotard is to have applique like petals and giuypure lace that stand up against the sides and back of the neck but open at the front. I dont want to applique onto full mesh collar as the gymnast wants it open at the front.  I know how to pattern cut colllars, how to pattern cut and sew for stretch and how to work with appliques and some 3d elements but Ive not made a collar like that on a leotard before and just wanted a second opinion.

My plan is just to create a base 3/4 width collar in two layers of lycra and some powermesh and to use that as the base. I will draft it with some -ve ease - maybe 5 - 10 % but not too much since it will be open. However I think it needs some -ve ease so that it will stand up against the neck. I was thinking to attach it in the normal way for a stretch collar - giving it a bit of stretch when sewing it on and topstitching the seam to the leotard to help the collar stand up.  What do you think?

The Show Must Go On / moisture wicking, cooling sports fabric
« on: August 21, 2018, 19:53:01 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Hope you have had nice summers. Im planing to make some sportswear for myself for a change and am wondering if anyone has any tips on where to buy those 'technical' moisture wicking cooling fabrics that are nice to wear when you are sweaty. I'm also starting to have, what I think, are pre menopausal hut flushes , some months I have days when I have about 10 - 20 a day for a few days. Im going to try and make some tops from sports fabric to see if that helps me feel more comfortable.
Im thinking I'll try with 'meryl' and 'supplex' - and I'd be grateful for any recomendations on other fabrics and where to get them, or even names of fabric that I can follow up.
Thanks very much in advance.

The Show Must Go On / Latest rhythmic gymnastics leotard project
« on: May 16, 2018, 15:14:04 PM »
I recently finished this leotard for rhythmic gymnastics. It has about 300 separate fabric and lace pieces - main pattern pieces and lots of leaves and petals. I used acid dye and jacquard paints to make most of the petals and dye some of the fabrics. It was a lovely project to work on. However there are some things Id like to change but it but its not something you can unpick very easily to alter!! Pics in the attachments.

The Show Must Go On / quick question re hemming lycical skirt
« on: April 20, 2018, 10:18:06 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I'm helping out my daughters day school by making few very simple lyrical skirts. I picked up some inexpensive but nice poly fabric that is somewhere between a chiffon and a lightweight crepe but I am used to working with stretch nets and lycra so I FORGOT that it needed to be hemmed - what a idiot.

Do you think I should heat cut the hems - which I think will take me ages with my tiny hot cutter or just run them through the overlocker on a rolled hem? I'm a bit worried that the rolled hem will change the drape. I have cut them this way; - large square with a diagonal cut from one the outer edge pf corner to into the the center of the square - and this goes around the waist (on a waistband) so the back has on a nice bias drape. However it means that all the hems are on the straight grain and need hemmed.

Probably should have thought about this properly before I started eh! Never think - 'oh I'll just run those up in a morning 'cos I know what I'm doing'! :S

Sewing Machines / Bernina foot controll
« on: March 30, 2018, 14:09:03 PM »
Hi Everyone,
Hope you are enjoying Easter weekend. The foot controll on my Bernina 330 has stopped working. It had been odd in the past - id press on it and nothing would happen, do it again and it would be fine. The machine works using the stop start switch. Im not sure, though, whether it is the machine itself or the foot pedal. Im wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if its a known or common problem?

The Show Must Go On / glass sew on stones
« on: March 21, 2018, 09:14:22 AM »
Has anyone got any tips on where to buy glass or economic crystal flat back shaped sew on stones for dance costumes. I dont want to buy Swarovski or Perciosa but would like a decent alternative. Ive tried al the usual dancewear suppliers (trim it, Chrisanne Clover, DSI, Crystal Parade). The outlets I buy crystals from just have swarovski and perciosa which are lovley and I use them, but I'd llike to investigate other alternatives. I also want to find a strong purple colour and their ranges of sew on dont seem to include one.

Thanks

Al

What lies beneath... / Fabric for sports bra & cropped tops
« on: February 16, 2018, 13:08:34 PM »
Hi, I make some dancewear and used to chat on the dancewear strand of the UK Sewing Forum. I'm trying to to make some pull on sports/dance bras and cropped tops. I don't mean the full on bras but more like a very supportive the cropped top, if that makes sense. I have been using an outer of medium weight lycra (82% nylon 18%elastine/lycra) with 2 layers of medium powernet (18% nylon 13% lycra) inside but I find that it is still bit too stretchy and I think that the front needs to be lined with something that has only a small amount of stretch - ssay 20% stretch.  I have made a couple of underwider bras in the past but the tricot I used to line those cups had no stretch so I think that would be no good. I also want to make ones that are not too thick or hot so I'd rather not be using the double layer of powernet if possible. Im going to try a really firm powernet but in the meantime I wondered if anyone has made sports bras and can suggest lightweight breathable fabrics to try that would give a firm less stretchy lining to the top? Looking at pull on sports bras in the shops they seem to be made with firm knit fabrics (along with standard lycras and powernets), but Im not sure what these firm knit fabrics are called or where to find something similar! I had a look on sewing chest but wasnt sure what fabric to look for. Thanks very much, Al.

The Show Must Go On / soft leotard linig
« on: March 29, 2017, 13:39:46 PM »
Hi everyone, I'm from the sewing forum and its so nice to find so many of you here. I missed it so much.
Im looking for a kind of swimwear/leotard/lingerie lining - it is very thin an dsoft with a kind of brushed cotton feel. Its actually not very nice to work with and sticks toyour hands if they are dry! But I like it as a lining for the top half of leotards becuase it is very thin and soft. Anyone any idea what it is called or where to get it. I can't remember where I picked mine up from.
