Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Janome Finesse 234
« on: January 21, 2022, 19:23:37 PM »
Hi

I've just bought a second hand overlocker, a Janome Finesse 234, and I was just wondering, is it a good machine? I can't seem to find much info about it.

I'm guessing it dates from the 80's? Not sure, I can't find any dates on it or the manual.

It is in really good condition, just needs a bit of a clean up and a service, but I have threaded it, and got the tensions sorted and it seems to work really well so far.

I only paid £40 for it. Did I do OK? Or is it a lemon?

Patterns Discussion / Sewing Bee Sleeveless Shell Top
« on: January 19, 2021, 16:40:07 PM »
Well, I was going to start my next project, the Vogue V8888 nightwear pattern, but I think that might be still a bit above my skill level at the moment. Instead, I am planning on making this:

https://www.sewmag.co.uk/free-sewing-patterns/sewing-bee-sleevless-shell-top

I want to use this project to improve my skills, do things I haven't done yet, like understitching and french seams and pattern alterations.

I'll come back later when it's done! Wish me luck!

Patterns Discussion / My next project I think Vogue V8888

I'm thinking of this as my next project in the new year, any hints, tips or advice? Or any pitfalls I need to avoid?

Fabric recomendations would be good, I'm thinking of something silky and black with roses for the robe and maybe picking up the colour of the roses for the nightie and PJ's.

Access All Accessories / Pattern weights.
« on: December 11, 2020, 17:07:22 PM »
Not sure if this is the best place to post this on the forum, but hey ho, needs to go somewhere.

I made these pattern weights for my daughter for Christmas a few days ago. I liked them so much I made some more for myself!

Today after work I made the fabric box to go with it. Drawn out, cut and sewn within an hour and a half. Really easy to do.

I found the pattern online, but unfortunately the website doesn't seem to work any more so I can't share! Sorry!

My daughter is an art teacher, but for fun she makes costumes for cos play events, so I am certain she will like them and use them a lot!

In the wardrobe / My First Dress
« on: December 01, 2020, 10:55:57 AM »
Hi all

I only joined yesterday, and thank you for the welcome, and I said I would post up a picture of my first dress project.

The pattern is NewLook 6723 and very pretty.

I am very pleased overall with how it came out, despite me still being a relative newcomer to this. I did knock up a toile first and fitted it nicely. I am not a standard shape by any means, long back, relatively wide shoulders and not a great deal up top, so large sizes for my shoulders can often be too baggy. Anyway, enough about me! I needed to lengthen the bodice by 2" and widen it a little.

Unfortunately, I made the toile some time back now and only finished the dress this morning, but in the mean time I have been losing weight with slimming world so it is now a little too big! It gaps across the neck line a bit and I have had to put a couple of darts in either side of the zip to pull in the neckline at the back too. Not a problem here as I will be wearing it with hair down.

Short of unpicking it and resizing it, any ideas on how to fit it?

I'll be wearing it this weekend, but as it's not that warm, a nice cardi will help with the fit for now.

Hi, I'm new... / Hi!
« on: November 30, 2020, 11:05:02 AM »
Hi, newbie here, please be gentle with me!

I'm a mainly self taught newcomer to the world of sewing. I did have a little bit of teaching in school, many, many years ago, but not much. I made a pencil case and a case for my calculator! Still got the pencil case now though, so it can't have been too bad.

Over the years I have done the odd curtain and some cushion covers and the biggest project, completely reupholstered my camper van. Last year I made an artists smock from a free pattern I found on the internet for my daughter, she is an art teacher, and often wears it in class, and she absolutely loves it. It prompted me to think bigger and now I have very nearly finished making my first dress, I'm just hand stitching the hem and it's all done. I've absolutely loved doing this project and am looking forward to doing more for my family.

So, I looked for a forum to help me learn more, and here I am! So, be prepared for many questions to come as I will be stuck at some point!

Thank you!

Kate.
