The Haberdashery / Re: New Iron Advice Please
« on: May 16, 2023, 19:17:14 PM »
I find it interesting that some of you don't like the steam generator for sewing pressing - I have used one at a sewing club and found it great for applying interfacing.

I don't do a lot of everyday ironing in the winter because I wear mainly knits but do I find my summer dresses and trousers need an iron.  Long gone are the days of school and work shirt ironing thank goodness.

The iron is well used and I must admit to looking forward to replacing it. :D  I look forward to researching once I've decided on a type.

My current iron is not brilliant and also is filled with green algae due to me leaving it on the window sill  :sorry:

I sew mainly garments and bags and would appreciate thoughts on what would be a good route to go down.  I see steam generator irons, gravity fed irons as well as the usual steam irons and would like to know what is best for fusing interfacing and general pressing.

I look forward to views.

I got mine from The Trimming Shop, and have found them very helpful in answering any questions.

If you are a member of PR you get a discount on patterns - this is why the pattern is cheaper than from Itch to Stitch

I love to see that the sweater vest (ie knitted waistcoat) is making a comeback.  I have a pattern for a mohair one I made back in 1980 and would love to revisit it.

Lovely tops @dolcevita.  I have two bought linen jersey tops which are now used as part of my stylish gardening attire due to being so trapezoid.  It must be the nature of the beast - I'm glad you tamed yours.

I have covered webbing with fabric for bag handles before.  That might work to stop it itching.

I have girls in their 20 who appreciate hand made garments and for them, the shacket number 8210 is very on trend

I can see one in a denim weight fabric for summer.

My neice had a similar problem with the bridesmaids for her wedding - all different sizes and ages and living around the country.  In the end, my daughter and I met her in Kingston and we went to Fabricland and bought metres of fabric which was divided between the bridesmaids who either made or had made their dresses to suit their needs.  There was even enough left for the mother of the bride to have a matching jacket!!

My daughter is on the right sitting and the left standing.

I have made my Amplector bum bag,  I went with 1" webbing because I liked the unusual buckle.

It is a bit big as a walking the dog bumbag but will be useful when we are allowed out more and I need to take mask, and other handbag items.  I love the ingenious method of creating the inside pocket and the way the bag 'is born' through the bottom of the pocket and the zip.

I bought the cork fabric from The Little British Fabric Shop  and managed to get it out of a fat eighth.
