Title: 2019 Darkside Temperature Based Sewalong
Post by: Lowena on January 02, 2019, 21:26:45 PM
This is a heads up to anyone wanting to join with us at any time during the year ( start your temperature count now, or use Accuweather data )

Accuweather link - Just enter your location and click on the monthly tab for previous temperatures (https://www.accuweather.com/en/gb/united-kingdom-weather)

The idea is to make a Temperature Quilt... or cushion... or placemats... or wallhanging... or anything really.
Take note of the daily temperature and align it with a colour ( your choice of how the steps are spaced, your choice of the colour range ). Construct the strips, squares, flying geese, rectangles or what ever you want to use and develop your individual project.
That's it!
No rigid rules, no specific layout, no dos and don'ts........ it's your project; just enjoy.
If you want to you can post updates, show w.i.p photos, discuss layout possibilities etc. It is not competitive, and I'm sure everyone will be mutually supportive.
Some ideas if you'd prefer not to make a straightforward 365 day quilt.......
1. A cushion cover / placemat / runner /bag for each season.
2. A throw using a square to represent the average temperatures for a week at a time.
3. 12 applique trees each monthly tree having daily leaves.
Use your imagination... the world is your oyster
We currently have at least 9 girls who have shown interest : Lowena, Wrenkins,Kenora,Sandra,Sakar,Pearl, Ploshkin,R.Sewist,Cheesecake, Iminei ( and hopefully Brenda ). @Acorn  and @maliw are you interested?
It'll be rule free, laid back, pressureless and great fun
Please join in, the more the merrier  :sew:
P.S. ( I knew I'd forget something  :| ) Pinterest is awash with ideas and Amazon is heaving with notebooks and coloured pencils  :D

Excellent Lowena  0_0

Thank you so very much for sharing thus idea with us and leading this sew along!
With a little toddler around it's really difficult to follow strict rules or a timetable. That's why I really love this project!  <3

Let's hope for a lot of participants and a lot of pics  :D

No no no no no
@Ploshkin  You got lost in transference from my list to my post  :| so sorry Ploshy dear. :( Been amended now so you can't get away with anything  :P
Lovely to have you aboard... let's hope for a warm spring ;)
My pleasure @Sakar  I know you'll produce something amazing ( with or without toddler help  0_0 ) and there are absolutely no rules, restrictions or timetables  ;)

Nice try Sister. If I'mma gonna do it so can you.

'K Lowena, I'm in. No clue just what but possibly along the lines of a dozen blocks each indicative of one month. If I get really ambitious-ha- piece the border for the days.

But I've got to tell you, if I use red for really hot it'll mostly be a red quilt with blued white for the last two days. It was 0 C last night..... :S

@Renegade Sewist mine is likely to be the opposite - nearly all grey with a couple of red bits if we're lucky.  It's a good thing it's not a rainfall quilt.

I'm not going to do this because I'm going to finish 3 UFOs before I start anything new.  Here are the fabrics which I would use if I was going to join in, but I'm not.   ;)

I was so resolute for about 5 hours on 1st Jan.

Maybe I could do it instead of the BOMs...

Maybe.

Come on @Acorn  you know you want to. It's something a bit different.. and there's no pressure - just make a note of the temps ( Accuweather is good for any you miss ) and do it in your own time.
You are so very accomplished and organised  that I forsee no difficulties at all......gwan,gwan, gawan ;)
Now then @Pearl stop being silly.... you know it's impossible to resist the lure :P . Just do the first month to see what it would look like if you were doing it for real
For those who fear it may be too simplistic ... I saw a good one. It was made from Flying Geese; the goose being the maximum temperature for the day and the side bits the minimum........good for using up scraps too
Now... I don't have scraps so have just spent £77.76 at Pelenna Patchworks online and am raring to go. :loveit:
@twopence @Deafoldbat @StitchinTime  @BrendaP @rubywishes @Bogwoppit  and other missing peeps...... interested??

And collecting temperatures isn't that time consuming until you have finished the rest :D

What size temperature range are you using for each colour?

I was thinking 5 degrees but that won’t use that many colours.

Haven’t checked the stats yet but we usually go from about -5 at the worst to high 20s if we have a summer like last year
Title: Re: 2019 Darkside Temperature Based Sewalong
Post by: Pearl on January 03, 2019, 19:28:07 PM
I'm only using two degrees for each colour as I wanted to include lots of colours. Am going from -2 and below to 33+ so that's 19 colours.

Yes, I wanted to show the high and low temperatures.  I really like the flying geese one but know I need something that won't take too much time when I go back to work.  I'm going to do them in different directions and mix them up.

I'm not doing night temps and I'm doing four degrees per colour from <-5 to >30. If I don't keep it simple I know I'll wander off.....
ETA I'm doing it by hand.  0_0

It's really great how many people are already working on this project  0_0

I have just found a rainbow collection of fabrics, which I bought.... I don't know  .... somewhere.... in holidays in 2017....  :P Maybe someone recognises the address on the invoice ;)

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Now I have to decide about the temperature steps.

I will make it in hexagons and I want to make 2 cities, for comparison of climate here and there.

I just wonder about the layout. Shall I do recognicable months like this one?

Or shall it be in lines?
How could I make the two different cities in a nice layout?

@wrenkins  that is absolutely brilliant It never crossed my mind to prep like that for this.  The nice part of always having access to the weather data online is you can wait on starting if you don"t have a plan or fabrics yet.

I’m thinking really bright colours as I will probably use it as a quilt in the room the GKs use.
12 vertical columns of HSRs separated by sashing in either black or dark blue, something fairly simple as I have so much to do this year I really don’t want to get overwhelmed.

Hopefully my internet will be back on tomorrow so I can do a proper fabric search, hate trying on my phone.

@Sakar which two cities?

Definitely!

If I were to start something like that doing just one teeny bit at a time I'd loose interest and it would become a UFO, but start it in September or October and it might get finished.

May I ask a question please? Are you going from light to dark, or dark to light in each colour range?
I was going to start with white, pale blue, blue aqua , pale green etc but looking on Pinterest I see many started with purple, dark blue, mid blue, etc which doesn't make sense to me  -< What's your thinking??

...unless you're in formaldehyde. (I work next door to 'Anatomy'. You never know what you'll meet in the corridor).  ><

The way I look at it is no-one is going to know it's a temperature thing unless you tell them so choose the colours that you like. (Look what happened to that @Pearl. She had to rip out August because it was the wrong colour).  0_0

Anyone doing monochrome?!?!?!?!

Not just August, @wrenkins .  In August, I undid it back to April.  I've only just got back to August this week.  I haven't recovered from the trauma yet.  At least with sewing, you can just undo the part that you don't like.

Come on, @maliw . You know you want to.

Title: Re: 2019 Darkside Temperature Based Sewalong

I've been looking at all sorts of formal weather color schemes used by different agencies in differing countries to reflect various data. That whole purple thing seems to come from Accuweather's radar imaging. But there are whole ranges that are used in very wet places to reflect more about moisture (rain) than temperature. Others include winds into the colors. Then there's the USDA zonal charts for average mean temperature.

In other words, you set the parameters. Do what you like, just be consistent if you want it to actually reflect your temps. You could have a tonal gradient for each degree if you want to go daft. I would need 87 colors for that one. No. I could go by each 10 F group. Eight colors for that one. Nope. Unless I use some assorted fabrics for say "green" being the 70's and grabbed which one the day actually felt like. You know how when it's been very hot it feels differently the first few day from the third week of it. So I might reflect the feel of the day.

Still contemplating while I let Weather.com collect the data for me.  8)

Blimey! Since we have been contemplating this its got really cold chez Imis;

On the 1st the minimum temp was plus 4 degrees (normalish for this time of year) then after this idea surfaced we have had .... minus 3, minus 2 and yesterday minus 5!!!!! These are all recorded around 6 am.

I'll have to get some very very very pale blue/greys !

After a long evening I have decided for 12 fabrics, which will cover a temperature range from -20°C to +40°C in 5°C steps.

So far I will record the temperatures for 2 cities and the maximum and the minimum of each day too.

Now I have to think about the blocks's size and shape or pattern.

I'm still waiting for inspiration to strike. I've looked at loads online but nothing grabs me.  :\ I did find a great collection of batiks, which I really loved, but I can't get them in this country - yet. I'm still looking as there's plenty of time to make up my mind. :)

If my local shop comes back to me next week with good news about my hoped-for s/m upgrade, then I might be eager to have a project to test out my new toy (I hope). :D

@Iminei - I have a Bernina 570qe which I love, but I'm finding it harder and harder to push a quilt through the harp space because of my back problems. I've been thinking of upgrading to a bigger 7-Series Bernina but I want a 5.5mm foot, and the only model with this is the 720 which is being discontinued. The only way I can get one is by my local shop putting it on special order with Bernina in Switzerland. They're going to let me know next week if this is possible. :)

(I might be able to buy one online but this will be a last resort as I'd rather buy locally because of the ongoing backup from them if anything goes wrong. :S)

As you can see I'm thinking of making calendar blocks with black denoting days that dont exist (if you see what I mean) Well we will see, they are simple enough to put together so technically this should be doable .

In my appalling planning the HSR's have turned out to be 3 3/4 x 6 1/2 unfinished which should yield a unit roughly  22 3/4 x 30 during the longest month.

Turn these monthly blocks into a  4 x 3 (12 ) block layout which should give us a 91" x 90 " quilt + some thin sashing strips between the monthly blocks and yes Im going to go back to basics and QAYG it.

I have literally NO IDEA what Im doing here!

What's a HSR ?
Do you mean HRTs = Half Rectangle Triangle (or Hormone Replacement Therapy!)

It is looking good and I like the idea of day and night temperatures.

Half Square Rectangles ????

Cut a square in half with the cut parallel to two sides and and it will be rectangles.  Cut a square or a rectangle in half diagonally, corner to corner and you will get triangles.

If you start with a square the triangles will be half square triangles  (HSTs) , if you start with a rectangle the triangles will be half rectangle triangles (HRTs).

But the rectangles that are cut in half to make the triangles were themselves cut from squares - 2 rectangles to a square.

I think.

I'd do both where you are until you move and then where you are once you have moved and have some means of marking or delineating (is that the right word) the change of place to mark this year, one chapter closing and another starting.  It will be a quilted record of it and will have a real story behind it.

No point in doing the temps here @Lowena - it's always the same - dark, gloomy, mild, damp!!! :S

I've heard East Anglia gets a lot more sunshine than we do - so you've got that to look forward to. Lucky, lucky. :) :)

PS That's partly why I haven't made a start on my temperature quilt/cushion - the colours are going to be so similar all the time. I can't think of a way to make it interesting (yet)  :S - I'll keep trying.

1 city max + min temp.
or
2 cities with max + min temp.
or
2 cities with only max temp.

On the 2nd of Feb. I will attend a sewing day with some friends, there I will start with cutting and (maybe sewing). So by then it has to be decided  :\

That's looking great @Iminei .
I'm still...yes, still!... at the planning stage with mine. I've got an idea for colours and how I'm going to lay it out, but I'd really like to see them all together, and hand pick them.
And now I've got distracted with the Murder Mystery quilt.  0_0

I'm wondering if I dare wait until the FoQ and choose all the colours there...but I don't want to risk being bored with the idea by then.
If I start it now (ish), and have all the fabrics...then I won't give up half way. I've thought of going out on a jolly to Cotton Patch. They'd have a good selection. I know it's in Birmingham somewhere but I'm not sure how easy it is to get to.

30.75" long and 23.5" wide. Each month will be the same because of the blank bits each end.

Make the quilt 4 months wide and 3 months in length
That will make it 94 inches wide  and 95.25 inches long.
Add on (at least) 1 inch for each sashing strip and it comes to
97 inches wide x 97.25 inches long
Plus any borders or extra width in the sashing.

Methinks that about right for a kingsize bed.  0_0

Another option might be to make the quilt double sided with six months on each side.
3 blocks wide x 2 blocks deep
That would be a total of 73.5 inches x 62 inches (plus any extras)

*** just 1/2" for the SS's Brenda ... (1" cut)

Ah @BrendaP , Goddess of Colour, Mathmagician of quilting Maths ...

Thank you, even tho I dont really even understand that completely!

Double sided might well be a thing as a kingsize on my bed looks wrong, (think HSTathon (https://photos.app.goo.gl/KH9hPoPTU6NuB3c69))

BUT I dont have to decide until whenever .... although it will stop me QAYGing it until we reach June ...mmmnnnn

It's easy enough for me to get into Birmingham...I use the Metro, but I'd have to plan the journey getting out of the city by bus. I assume there must be a bus service down that way.

yes, the spraytime fabric. I found a shop in Germany which offers them too, but as you said, it's difficult to select the right colours... I already thought about sending fabric scraps to the shop to say: "Look, that's what  I need"

Thats the way to go @Sakar if their postage rates and prices are reasonable ...

but it is the standard Makower colour range so you shouldnt have any difficulty getting it from England and (you would hope) other fabric retailers in Europe.

@Pearl  I'd have to get there using  :S public transport :S

It's easy enough for me to get into Birmingham...I use the Metro, but I'd have to plan the journey getting out of the city by bus. I assume there must be a bus service down that way.

Should be easy enough to get a bus out from Birmingham as Cotton Patch is on a main road.  If you get to Shirley, you've gone too far.

Thanks, Pearl.  :)  I'd like to get there one day. I'll have to plan it when I'm feeling more adventurous.

Very nice @Pearl!! I like the colours!!

I am just wondering, who much fabric I shall order, to avoid running out of it during the year...  :S
Title: Re: 2019 Darkside Temperature Based Sewalong
Post by: Pearl on February 14, 2019, 11:28:05 AM
Thanks, @Sakar .  I am worried about running out of fabric as I'm using my stash.  Most was from Craftsy so could be reordered but some, I haven't got a clue where it came from.

I think (hope) 1/2m of each should be enough.

They are 1" wide and 3 3/4" long.  It wasn't until I lay them out for their photo that I realised, I am going to have 31 seams to match each month when sewing the rows together.   :S

Still pretty weeny!

Mines going to be enormous and yours will be tiny ...
If there's a medium one out there we could furnish the 3 bears house!

In fact thats quite weird, Yours will be 3 3/4" x 1" mine will be 3 3/4" x 6 1/2".

I was just thinking that (So far) this has been good for me, as every Monday (as much as I can make it, which will be most of the time) I sit down and put together the week before ... I think I'll just make it humungous, rather than double sided, because that means I could QAYG it too.

Sometimes I can see them, sometimes I can't, sometimes I see them and they disappear and sometimes the opposite.  There might be a no entry sign or just a gap in the text.  Keeps me on my toes.

Yes  @Iminei but I'm not up to the sewing bit yet. I have organised my fabrics ( you seem to be using a lot of different fabrics whereas I have one light blue, one cream, one pale green etc ) my temps range and noted the actual temperatures. I thought there was no point cutting and sewing bit when it has to be all packed away. As soon as I'm in my new abode it will be the first project, along with the Linus quilt............Honestly, I'm on it like a bonnet  0_0

:D :D There's a better dual - sewing area elsewhere @Iminei and I've been given the go ahead to get new furniture. I was thinking of Horn cabinets but someone said they're made of chipboard ( and that wouldn't be allowed )  :'(
By the way @Iminei I did my first piece of machine applique yesterday, using blanket stitch on my machine.... don't ask for pics cos I've got none  :P

@Iminei seems to be concerned that she is the only one participating in this project!!
Not True
When I suggested it, it was nothing hard and fast like some sewalongs are.... it was never meant to be thus......I am not a hard taskmistress  :P
It is up to participants as to whether they make and show as they go along, just make and keep under wraps or leave it all until December. Unless there has been a takeover, it was ever thus  and will continue to be so :ninja:
It is a year long project by its very nature and I do not expect necessarily to see results until the beginning of 2020.
Sorry if this sounds a bit like regurgitating old news but I wanted to clarify matters.
I am extremely stressed at the moment and unable to even think about project for the forseeable future........ however, I am still taking part with enthusiasm and hope many friends will still be joining in at some point over the year.
Retrospective temperatures can be found on Accuweather, so it's not too late to join even if you're new  :)

I've finally made a decision about the colours, and how I plan to do mine.  :)

I'll be using fairly predictable hot colours/cold colours, and I'm doing triangles joined in rows.

Nothing's stitched together yet but I've been cutting a few triangles out and have neatly labelled them in clear bags. I'm doing each degree of temp per colour.

Yes...looks like I'll have some lovely deep orange colour fabrics for this weekends weather.  :)

I pinned them together yesterday and have stitched them today.

It's been nowhere near an iron...couldn't be bothered  >< , but I finger-pressed  0_0 as I went along. It'll do for now.

I haven't bothered to rotate the picture. This is how it will be on the final piece so you'll get a better idea. The rows are Jan day temps, Jan night temps, Feb day temps etc.

Feeling quite pleased with it. At first look, I wondered if March looked a bit boring. It's a bit samey, but it reminded me of Spring and daffodils when I was stitching it.  :) Very appropriate for the month.

I need to decide what colour to use on the ends of my rows.

Yellow!  Fab!  Now I'm excited to see how these will develop.  (I'd got bored of blue/grey - on mine, not yours.)

Looking at this, I've realised that I've made mine upside-down - low temperature at the top and high temperature at the bottom.  I'm not going to undo it now!
Title: Re: 2019 Darkside Temperature Based Sewalong
Post by: Sandra on April 25, 2019, 07:53:35 AM
I've decided on a dark, inky blue for the background...and it really does look very inky  :S  so I've washed it to see if the colour was going to bleed from it.
It washed OK with not too much...actually, hardly any... blue showing in the washing machine water.

My plan is to create a two inch border of this blue, with a little one inch multi-coloured strip of whatever colours I've got left out of my fabrics I'm using...then a surrounding, deeper border of this blue.
I'll have to see how it looks as it's going together.
Plans may change.  :)

Ahhh thats lovely @Sandra  Thank you so much for the pics.

I love dark dark fabrics that arent black .. The Villages border was a really dark green (stonehenge) and I think it just brings out the colour in the whole piece.

Loving that dark blue, is it a batik or ????

Nah its Spraytime right??? Lovely intense colour!

Yes. I know what you mean. I didn't fancy     :\  black  :\

As I've used batiks, I wanted the outer fabric to have the same depth of colour.
The blue is a lovely batik from Doughty's.  I was ever so good   and only purchased the one fabric...isn't that good of me?

It's a, 'Sew Simple Batik Basic'...it looks so inky that I expected my hands to be stained blue after handling it, but it's behaved itself and washed really well.

But how MUCH of that did you buy???? Haahahaahaha ...

I wouldnt have bothered washing but thank you for doing the experimentation for me!

I use sew simple from Doughty all the time. I believe the first quilt show I went to (Exeter) I staggered out with metres and metres of the stuff! Hence the batik stash that can be seen from space (according to NASA)

Ok Ive made it here from the mystery quilt thread, I would like to join in this sew along, I have read my way through the beginning of the posts and think I have the idea but have a couple of questions?

1.  Can I do just the daytime temperature
2.  How many colours do I need to use is it in 1 degree jumps or docent it matter
3.  Can I really use any block I want

I do have a limited stash of quilting fabrics and don't really want to buy a large amount of fabric especially all at once.

I am off to investigate my colour range, any suggestions for simple blocks will be great
thanks in advance

Your quilt @Celia , your Rules!!!!

Simple blocks ... how about squares or rectangles?

Just consider the size of the overall quilt ... 365 blocks in 12 sections. ... If you want to separate the months you need some blanks too, as Im doing.

Im using several fabrics of the same kinda hue for same temps, basically whatever I had to hand ... but you can use one colour per degree, 3 degrees or 5 degrees ... your quilt, your rules!!!

Mine is going to be a full size double and Im waiting til the end of June to decide whether to make the quilt one whole year on one side or double sided... as Im QAYGing it Im not too worried about size.

@Celia my idea was to make it as open ended as people want. I personally am only doing daytime temperatures.I am doing rectangles and probably 1 degree differentials, but I haven't quite decided yet. Every choice is entirely yours....I'm not being dictatorial, just pleased that people want to join in. I suggest you look at your fabrics colour range and go forward from there. I'm so pleased to welcome you aboard <3

Mine was a last minute decision to add the night time temps too.

It was after I'd sat down with pencil and paper and started to look at the size it was going to be that I realised the proportions worked better for me with the two sets of temperatures.

It's great Celia. You can do it in any way you like.  0_0

I'm in a bit of a quandary after yesterdays hot, high temperature  -< ...31 degrees here, apparently.  :S

I'd chosen my colours up to 27 degrees...but beyond that, I hadn't made my final choices. I've got lots of reds (too many, too similar) so I'm trying to veer off into a more hot pinky/red sort of colour for the rare, higher temps.

I've been online to Doughty's and have ordered some deep, hot pinks/reds. Well that's what they sort of looked like online.
Two arrived yesterday...they're red again, although I think I can use the one, mottled, blotchy one. Two more will follow in the week.

These are the fabrics I've got so far. Depending on the fabrics arriving in the week, I think I'll use the paler, blotchy fabric in the centre of the picture.

Gosh. Isn't it annoying having to buy all this batik fabric, looking for the right shade.  0_0

June's looking good. Lots of orange, and the night-time temps show lots of green.  :)

Sandra.

Half-way there and this is how it's looking....

Managed to get some colours I think I'm happy with for the higher and hotter temps...my temperature colour strip now goes from orange to red to borderline raspberry-ish pink.
I've got the colours up to 32 degrees, and I don't expect I'll need to get any higher.

0_0 Ha, ha...famous last words in my last post #217.

Yes. I've got the colours sorted up to 32...and today I might need as high as 33 degrees.  :S

Mustn't grumble.

I'll leave it a day or two for the weather site to update to their final temp. (They adjust it sometimes in the following few days afterwards.)
Luckily, I'll be at the FoQ next week if I need more colours. I should be spoiled by choice when I'm there.

I don't envy you.  :S
Late afternoon, I sat with the french door wide open and the curtains drawn, and there was a horrible hot breeze  :S  blowing across my feet.

The weather site has given me a high of 34 degrees for yesterday, so now I need to find a couple more colours.  :D  I've pinned my colours together for the month up to the 24th, and they're ever so colourful.  :)

Looking good!

We're not going to be needing any more of the high 20's - 30 degrees colours, by the feel of the weather this week.  :(

Daughter said I should do another one next year.  0_0  I think that means that she likes it.

I added my August strips on yesterday.  :)

I can almost certainly pack away the high temp colours now. We won't be needing them again this year.  :(
Pity I haven't used some, and only one or two of some of the others, (from 26 degrees upwards.)

Thats lovely @Sandra  ... how big are your HST's ?

I laid out my 8 months worth on the bed yesterday and was shocked by how big they were?

I laid them out 3 across and they were already almost the length of the bed !!!

When I laid them out 4 across, they made a very generous drop off the sides of bed

Each one measures 23 1/2" across by 31" down and I wonder if Ive radically miscalculated ( @BrendaP  )

Ive got 4 more months to do!

I've used pre-cut jelly roll strips....so 2.5 inches tall triangles. Couldn't stop looking at the pretty Bali Pops, :loveit:  so used some of them.

I hadn't realised your blocks were that big  :S

Are you still thinking of doing yours two-sided? @Iminei

That was (a very good) suggestion from Brenda earlier this year but I keep thinking of trying to line the months up when I layer them and the extra cost for the material to flesh out the quilt etc

Well just lining up the pieces so they match fore and aft so to speak .. I think I hate the layering the most now,

I know the wedding quilt was a nightmare ... to line up the back border section with the front border .. I think I hand stitched them together in the end and then layered around the stitching.

@Iminei
Way back in January when you were using blues you wrote
In my appalling planning the HSR's have turned out to be 3 3/4 x 6 1/2 unfinished which should yield a unit roughly  22 3/4 x 30 during the longest month.

Turn these monthly blocks into a  4 x 3 (12 ) block layout which should give us a 91" x 90 " quilt + some thin sashing strips between the monthly blocks and yes I'm going to go back to basics and QAYG it.

Your arithmetic was right but either your initial measuring was not quite right or your seams are a bit scant if 22.75" x 30" has turned into 23.5" x 31".  That will make up to 94" x 93".  If you add 1" sashing between each month and around the edges it comes to 100" x 97".  That will fit a large double bed - what Americans call Queen size.

In hindsight you should maybe have cut your rectangles and half rectangles a bit smaller.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

The joining strips wont add anything but I might add a black strip around the edges (why not make it even harder Imi)

Im also thinking of adding a thin black strip between the rows as the points have never matched up ?!?  :S

The points aren't quite meeting up because your seams are too narrow!

Re-sew those seams (the ones between each week) so that the seam allowance is bigger and the points touch.  That will take an inch or so off the overall length - or provide the wiggle room to add the very narrow black sashing.
Title: Re: 2019 Darkside Temperature Based Sewalong
Post by: Iminei on September 02, 2019, 09:44:10 AM
But if all the seams are exactly the same they should still match ...  Surely Shirley ??!!!  :S

and as the gap between the sewn seam (using my scant 1/2" seam cos I know my seams are off) and the points is a quarter of an inch  (as seen by the 1/4" black bias tape fitting perfectly) that means I need to sew 1/2" seam ish.  :o

Ive thought about resewing all the inbetween seams but worry about them lying flat afterwards ... and fyi I am definitely not going to unpick the original seams!

Alright, before I am too late again.... I show you, what I just have finished right now.
I know, it's not pressed and not nicely layered, but I have never shown you the months before "because I hadn't pressed them"  >:)

So... Tomorrow we leave for holidays and I (am sorry to say) I don't want to get out that bl..dy iron now, but here is my tiny temperature quilt until 7th Sept  :)

And yes, the dates are still missing, I will stitch that when we are back again ;)

Thats fabulous Sakar!!!!!

And it looks as tho you have had a much better summer than we have down here in DDD ... Are the reds over 30????
I think we have had 2 or 3 days of Reds here!

What size is it?

Mine is going to be humongous and Im still humming and Ha-ing over whether to make it double sided or just one.... In fact one of the thought bamboozling my brain into awakeness was what Im  going to use for the backing ... and how much that is going to cost!!!!  :S

@Iminei  I'm late in replying to this.

If you want the points to match exactly then you need to sew the seams so that the sstitching goes exactly across where the previously sewn diagonal and vertical seams cross.  Doesn't matter whether it's a scant quarter inch, a generous quarter inch, a half inch or even a miserly eighth inch.

I'm not saying that my points are always perfect, far from it, but the way I do it is to poke a pin through that intersection on the top layer and make sure it emerges from the bottom layer also at the intersection, then back up again.  If it means that the two seam allowances are uneven, so be it.  It's like that because the previous seams (or the cutting out) were not perfect.  It seldom is IME.

Yes. This month...on the 8th...I've got the night down, allegedly  -< ,  to 2 degrees  :S

I keep checking it to see if it was a mistake, but they haven't changed it.

I've asked my brother for his thoughts, and he claims he saw somebody recently, possibly clearing a bit of ice off his windscreen. (Big bruv works shifts, sometimes nights, so is out and about at funny times of the day.)

I have completed the first half of the year.
I don't like cutting out all the small pieces so tend to put it off. However I'm liking the look of the quilt so far.
Before @Iminei asks for pics.....I'm keeping it under wraps until it is finished  :P

I've pinned the month so far for October, and it's a bit same-y  :\ between 12 and 16 degrees, all shades of yellow without much variation between them.
Night-time has a bit more temperature range.

I think today's said to be colder so I should be able to add a bit of green to the mix.

Can't wait to see what everyone's done.  :)

Sandra.

Im going to have to start thinking about Quilting these now ....

They are seriously big and I'm still wondering about Brendas idea of a reversible quilt
or just the twelve months on the one side ...

Pics will be incoming.

I read with enjoyment , I really would like to get more into quilting but at the moment it will have to be small lap quilts due to other things going wrong in my life, I did try starting this but realised it was too large a project for me at the moment.   I have been practicing some techniques recently and will keep watching for now

I think it would be a shame to separate the cold and warm months.  The joy of these quilts is being able to see the pattern across the year.

You and me both Sandra ... I went to her very first concert, The Kick Inside tour (at Poole Arts Centre, as was) with my boyfriend at the time  :)

and was gutted not to be able to go to her last concert, Before The Dawn tour (at the Hammersmith Odeon, as is) ...
just impossible to get a ticket even in the Kate bush fan club early access   :'(

... I cried for days and days ... Ok weeks!

Noooo.....you saw her on her first tour!!??  Oh. I'm so jealous now.

However. I did get to see her at Hammersmith. Don't know how I did it, but I was offered access to presale tickets. Couldn't believe it when I bagged some. Went with my lovely ex-boyfriend...(he of the gold snakeskin print shirt which I made earlier this year)...so, so excited to be in the same room as her.

Yes. 2014. That one.  :)
It was wonderful. The crowd were happy and friendly. Was asked by a German couple where I'd got my t-shirt from.
Sat next to a man who'd come over from Texas. He'd got tickets for two nights.

The man sat in front of us was from Edinburgh. He'd been the previous night too. Showed us a pic of Keira Knightley on his phone who was there somewhere amongst us.
The night before, he'd spotted Jimmy Page.
People seemed excited to be there.

Later on in the show, KB sat, barefoot at a grand piano, just her, and she played and sang...my friend said he'd have paid just to have seen that. It made his night.
She could have flicked through a magazine for me, and I'd have been happy to have been in the same room as her.  0_0
(Actually, at about £100 a ticket, perhaps not. -< )

The night ended with Cloudbusting. Everyone on their feet and singing along.

Maybe we should have started a KB thread.  -<

But Imi....you were there... At The Beginning!! That's pretty cool. Please tell me you have the t-shirt/tour programme/ticket or some souvenir from back then.

Lovely!

Looks like we've both been doing the same thing this morning.  :)

I have an idea of how I'm going to do some sort of border on mine to finish the top.

I'm a bit miffed that I don't have a temperature quilt for the hot, hot summer of 2018...I don't have enough fabric to make a full size one so I'm making a mini one.

This is quite a flattering photo.
It was going a bit banana-shaped when I started to join the second strip to the third one, but I persuaded it to lie flat with a damp cloth and a hot iron.  >:)
The wrinkles are terrible in real life.  :|

Finished height of the triangles is three-quarters of an inch.

Wonderful ... how big is it?

I'm thinking of showing mine at FOQ this year, as it will be too big for any other practical use.
Pearl mentioned she might show hers too ... I think the minimum size has to be 1 metre on any one side

Maybe we could enter these as our TSP group entry ???

OMG!....I'd have to quilt it.  :S  I'm not a quilter.

I put the border on mine last night, and I'm pleased with it.  :) Finished size is 48" x 57"

Well despite my thinking I had found the backing fabric for the temperature quilt by means of Ikea, Coventry and a very helpful VIPearl yesterday proved otherwise as I came across a double sided double duvet set in a much better match for the top ...

May I ask who is still involved and how far you have got please.
I still have to sandwich and bond mine but I would love to see everyone elses <3

Sakar, you used Makower Spraytime if I recall correctly ... Surely that must be simple to find?
If you send me a snip of the colours you need I could pick them up for you and send them on.

I've finished my mini one...the one for 2018.

It measures 16" x 18".

The one for 2019 still hangs in the corner.  ><

You did one in 2018 ???!!!

You kept that quiet !

In other news the fabulous girls from Midsomer Quilting outdid themselves and @Sakar  received her fabrics from them yesterday so she can finish her TQ!

Mine is just hanging from the hanger, looking sorry for itself ... I must get back to that ...
I did think of asking everyone who had made one to exhibit them in the group category for FOQ this year ...

FOQ is still not giving up the thought of going ahead this year, no announcements up on their website ... but I think its unlikely.

I did one for 2018. Curious as to what the hot year would have looked like in comparison so made a small one so I could see.

Re: FoQ. Can't imagine it could possibly be the same if they go ahead this year. There will still be people with worries about the virus, and some will have cash flow problems...me included.
Some businesses won't be there.

Perhaps they need to skip this year. Get it back next year and back to the correct date in August.

I agree .... Money !!! Jesus Im going to have to sign on and I never wanted to be in that position again ...

I think they should cancel, I also think we are still going to be under lockdown. My neice Lucia lives in Bolzano Italy and they've been locked down for 6 weeks and it means lockdown. They cant go out without a permission slip ... seriously ... the the police are not frightened about enforcing it.....

So you made that mini this year using records of temps from 2018??? How big is your '19 quilt then ?

Ugh! Signing on. No. It isn't something you want to do if you can help it.
I think I might be getting a little bit of help after the announcement last week about the self-employed, but nothing is going to happen until about June.

The 2019 temp quilt measures 57" x 48". It's just waiting to be sandwiched and the binding.

I had an email today saying it's cancelled.

It is with great regret that Upper Street Events has taken the decision that, as a result of the ongoing situation with Covid-19, it is not going to be possible to host this year’s Festival of Quilts (30 July – 2 Aug, NEC Birmingham).

OK....It's together and quilted. It's 'finished'.

I've done this....

-< Don't like the outer boingy stitched quilty pattern. I don't think it needs it. I've left it for now while I decide but I'm pretty sure I'll be unpicking that and leaving it plain.
As soon as I'd done it and stepped back to look at it, I thought  :\

The back is like this...

I've hand stitched to mark the temp every 5 degrees on the strip on the back, and have stitched the date when the highest and lowest temps were.

And my wonky hand stitched label  :) ('cos I don't have a fancy embroidery machine to write it for me).

I'm on July.  I had a bright idea that I would do one month each month, so in July, I'd do July's row etc.  I'm full of bright ideas.  If only I carried them through.   :P

I love yours, @Sandra .  Looking forward to seeing it in person at next year's Festival of Quilts.  ;)

@Sandra A wonderful quilt you made!!! 0_0 I love you triangles!! I also thought about a thermometer (somehow), but I still don't know, how I will do that with my hexagons.

I have cut and sorted all my hexagons until end of 2019, now I have "just" to sew them together

Wonderful @Sandra, I'm full of admiration, I started by recording dates and temperatures and that is as far as I got - about 3 weeks.

Now I just have to continue with the 2nd city ....  :P

Yes

I know, it may be better, but is "just" a sewing/quilting machine and not made for embroidery  ;)

For me it's fine, I just wanted to have an overview, when the months has started  :)

How big is that first one???

The hexagon template is 3/4 inches, the entire block... I don't know, I have to iron it first

@Sakar   That'a a lovely quilt top.

Do you really mean 0.75 inches?  :o  or is it 3-4 inches?  Tell us in cm.

Thanks, @BrendaP :)

I wanted a small top, because I wanted to compare two cities, that's why I am just sitting at the sewing table right now to finish the 2nd town ;-)
The hexagons have a diameter of 5,2cm.

@Sakar    Ah, the 3/4inch is the finished length of each side of the hexagon.  Fairly small but not as small as 3/4 inch diameter!

Are you hand sewing it? or machining?

I am not patient enough for hand-sewing, I sew everything with my machine (even buttons )
