Vintage Machines / Singer 99k handcrank
« on: March 31, 2019, 15:01:40 PM »
I did a speculative bid on a well known auction site and a little singer came to live with me. Yesterday my husband helped me sort out the bobbin winder and get the bobbin cover to sit flat, today I had a tinker with the top tension as it wasn't doing anything useful at all.

Still needs some adjustment but worked well enough for my eldest to have a go. He said it was very calming.

I'll be watching more YouTube to improve it.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Over locker and coverstitch shopping
« on: January 05, 2019, 20:54:30 PM »
I'm going to buy an overlocker and coverstitch as my christmas/birthday present.  I have been researching for about a month and keep going round in circles, so I though I'd ask the collective mind to help (or add more confusion).

I will go and try machines, but am trying to narrow down what I want to try.  I'm pretty technically minded and don't mind a learning curve.  I sew t-shirts and jogging bottoms on my sewing machine for my boys, would like to manage delicate materials for myself and have a neighbour who runs a dance school so tempted to have a go at costumes for fun (this isn't strictly speaking necessary but would be interesting).

So if you had about £1k, what would you get?
I had thought maybe Pfaff coverlock 3.0 as I sew on the dining table and it would be only one machine to move.
Or 2/3/4 thread overlocker and separate coverlocker but there are so many I don't know where to start.

So if you had about £1k, what would you get?  Hoping to be under this limit so posh Babylocks are out.

As I enjoyed the cushion swap and made an extra one for my mum, I thought I'd have a go at a proper quilt. I'm not sure how it will go and fabric is expensive, so I bought a pack of 12 fat quarters and a reduced cotton chambray king sized quilt set from Aldi.

I'll post pictures of my work in progress (this may be slow) and set a challenge to see if you can work out what pattern I'm following.

Vintage Machines / First vintage for me
« on: May 30, 2018, 14:34:57 PM »
Last week I did a speculative £10 bid on an old singer. Basic pictures and little information - "light works, sold as seen".
I forgot about it and had an email yesterday saying I'd won. Picked it up on way back from taking kids out to splash park.

Here's the first picture and now I'm off to look up the serial number and source a bobbin case and spare needles.

Turns lovely and smoothly by hand.

Hmmm, no add picture bit. Will post without and try again

In the wardrobe / Help with stripes.
« on: May 24, 2018, 11:22:09 AM »
Thought I'd make myself a quick t-shirt New Look 6216. Wide striped jersey. Decided the neck band will be green. But how should I position the stripes?

Green or navy across the bust? Options please. I have bony square shoulders and fairly big bust, would the navy make it stand out even more?

In the wardrobe / Oliver and S tops
« on: May 19, 2018, 19:30:06 PM »
I made an Oliver and S Garden Party blouse for my neighbours daughters 2nd birthday. Big sister couldn't be forgotten so I made her an Oliver and S Badminton top.

They love them and wore them for their own garden party today.

I think I've got the hang of gathering and ruffles, not something that I've come across before as they are not usually on boys patterns!

Yellow is Liberty tana lawn seconds, chambray is an Aldi sheet, stripy is unknown slippy stuff.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Hand quilting
« on: May 01, 2018, 18:28:51 PM »
Inspired by the cushions from Pearl in the great mystery cushion swap, I plan to have a go at hand quilting. Is there a recommendation on thread? I wondered if using embroidery silks would work ok? I have lots from cross stitching days.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Free/swap - Simplicity 8260
« on: September 20, 2017, 22:59:12 PM »
This is the pattern included with the latest Sew magazine.

http://www.simplicity.com/simplicity-pattern-8260-misses-top-in-two-lengths-with-back-interest/S8260.html

I'm not keen on it and wondered if anyone would like it, ideally you'd send me one you don't want as a swap.

Pattern is for 29.5" to 48" bust. Looks like 6" ease.

In the wardrobe / Sewing darts - where do you start?
« on: August 02, 2017, 08:37:59 AM »
I bought myself Alison Smith's Dressmaking book for my birthday. She says to sew darts starting at the point. Everything else I have seen says start from the seam and go towards the point.

What do you do and why?

I'd like to try starting at the point but suspect the end would get chewed up as does everything that I start too close to the edge.

In the wardrobe / Smiley Shorts/skirt
« on: June 08, 2017, 22:57:29 PM »
I've been sewing for little people.
I made a circle skirt for a friends daughters 5th birthday (no photo, the party crept up on me and she moves too quick swirling in it).  Very quick apart from the looooonnnggg hem.  Not done anything like that long before.  I used my rolled hem foot and only went wobbly a little bit.  Getting better with practice.

With the left overs I made:
Oliver and S Lazy Day skirt with a ribbon hem (ace technique!), for girl aged 4
Oliver and S Sunny Day Shorts in dark grey denim with smiley side panels for her twin brother, tried my own adaptation of adjustable waist as he is very slim.
Another pair with smiley pockets for my DS also 4, size 5 as he's not so slim and growing fast.
Photo of these in gallery, not sure how to add link.

Also on the go are a black pair of shorts with orange highlights and orange top stitching (as requested by 8 year old DS)

I think I'm on to 12 pairs of those shorts now!

Fun with Fabric / Fabric for "twinings" dress
« on: May 25, 2017, 17:59:18 PM »
I like the look of the outfit that the girl wears on the twinings advert - red dress and denim jacket.  Particularly as I have a denim jacket I never wear as I'm pretty much always in jeans.

As there are many on here who love searching online emporia and know more about fabric types than beginner me I thought it worth an an ask if anyone has ideas on fabric.

Here's a link to the add https://vimeo.com/120400314
Hope thats allowed and not classed as advertising!

Thanks, Lisa

In the wardrobe / Sewing shirt collar
« on: April 23, 2017, 23:04:33 PM »
I'm working on my first shirt, Liesl and Co Classic Shirt. It's a bit of a leap for me but finding the instructions brilliant and going slowly.

I've nearly finished the collar, last step is to edge stitch the inside collar band.  It's all pinned and ready, but where is the best place to start from and should i go all the way round in one go?

It's going so well i don't want to suddenly stuff up.

Thanks, Lisa
