Title: 401G is home....
Post by: Wychall on November 29, 2019, 19:25:10 PM
I've picked up an ebay purchase 401G today. A lovely machine in a broken case with no accessories or controller. Shame that wasn't mentioned in the ad. The seller was evidently embarrassed about as when I went to collect, she had gone out and left the machine in the garden. Hey ho, I've still got my monies worth....
However, as there is no manual with it, and I can't find one on Google for the G, has anyone got a pdf that they could share? Pretty please?

This link mentions the differences between the 401g and the 401a.

Going by the description of the bobbin winder, the manual on the Ismacs site seems to be for the 401g.

The manual on Singer’s American website is for a 401a and the machine does look slightly different.

What is different with the G model?   -<

Immediate difference is that the G has a top mounted bobbin winder and twin thread take up levers. I thought the ismacs one was for the American machine so didn't download it. I'll go get it now. Thanks for the heads up.

StitchinTime, you quite correct. That is for the 401G. It had me fooled as most of the text is identical to the 401A manual that I have.
Thank you so much for the heads up.

Yes please Roger. This machine will be a keeper so I will be looking out for any of the missing bits. That can be a challenge when you don't know what's missing. Lol.

Congratulations on your purchase!  I was lucky enough to get a complete 401g a couple of years ago.  I put photos (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;pic=90) in the gallery at the time.  The link there shows the feet and straight stitch throat plate.  these (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=91) are the cams.

Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks for that SkoutSews. Could you tell me what numbers the cams are please. There was a No 2 in the machine so what am I looking for?

I'll take a look tomorrow, and see what I have :) do you have a straight stitch (small round hole) or multipurpose (wide hole) throat plate?

I know I have a load of cams for stitiching

I should have some mixed and assorted feet too.

As an aside have you looked inside the case top? on mine there is a little set of drawers tucked in the lid that has all the parts in it. you have to lift the drawers as they are caught on a little bump. if you dont have I may have a spare set of drawers too.

I'll pm tomorrow with what I have.

Roger

Thanks Roger. I presently have the general purpose foot and plate on the machine, with a No. 2 cam fitted. No drawers or anything else so I am interested in anything that you have.

Pictures of 401g screws that hold the base onto the machine. They’re a bit of a funny one having a very wide top narrow stem and not being very long.

It’s on a .5cm squared ruler to give you an idea of scale. But it’s a flat head with a probably 1/2” head and probably the same length.

Now they look far more professional than the one wood screw and one electrical socket screw that holds mine together. Now the challenge of finding some......

Hi

Not an expert by any means, but I wonder if you need carriage screws? I used them when I had to attach a wooden table top to a metal base...

Good luck with the search x

Thanks for the suggestion but, no, definitely not a carriage bolt. These are tiny, like the screws holding your light switch to the wall, just with a larger head. Most likely Singer specials like the rest of the machines.  :vintage:

Niche parts are tricky, you could try Helen Howes she may have dismantled a less desirable machine and have some.
