Well I promised you all, well all 10 of my loyal Darksiders, a new challenge and here it is ....

The Sewing Places Midsummer Applique Challenge!

We are now mid August and I suggest this runs to the end of September ...

I am challenging you all to make an applique piece;

not in the weeny size my masochistic self has been indulging in recently, but A4 or larger using a mix of media if you wish ... but in honour of The Eve Appeals Go Red in September, please include an aspect of RED in your design.

What you do with your applique after the challenge remains up to you; cushion cover, wall hanging, centre panel for a quilt, table runner  ..... the list could be endless !

Rules:

Size:-

A4 or Larger

Media:
-
Whatever you wish, but 50% or more of the piece should be textile based.

Colours:-
Your choice but please include an aspect of RED in your materials or design.

Process:-
Please post a pic of your inspiration whether it be a card, photo or sketch from your imagination at the start of the challenge.
Feel free to post progress pics throughout the challenge but finished creations must be submitted by September 30th.

We will host a poll at the end of the challenge to show our appreciation for the no doubt amazing creations ...
The winner of which will receive The Sewing Places unique and priceless Prize Winners badge !

I'd quite like to take part but am not sure what's required, so I need to study the linkies first to see if it's something I could manage.  -< I've only done a tiny bit of applique before.

I've not done anything quite like this before but I'm happy to have a go...( -< )
I think I understand how it's done.

I've been thinking of what I could do, and an image popped in my head, of my daughter in a black dress with red spots, and a red sash. It's a lovely photo of her.
I suspect I'm being over-ambitious on this one...but I might give it a try.

Other than this, I have a photo of a gorgeous Oriental Poppy in full bloom.

I'll have to see what fabrics I can find to make it work.

Sandra.

I'd quite like to take part but am not sure what's required,

Have you ever been given a card, seen a picture in a magazine or on a billboard and think OOOh that is gorgeous or in my case, I could quilt that ???

Thats what you are looking for ....

(nips upstairs ...and boots up the kindle to take a pic...)

Your'e a very lucky girl, the upstairs is in just as bad a mess as the downstairs as Imself had to access the radiator under my big desk in my sewing/art/wardrobe/spare room so my stuff is everywhere ....

I was going to do a tea cosy for this, but not sure it would be big enough to meet the rules. I will think of something- maybe even a Christmas item!

Tea cosy was my first thought too @Sheilago as I've done one before but it's too small. (Also I didn't realise that what I was doing was applique. I thought I was just cutting and sticking!).  0_0

So, this is the picture I love of my daughter.

I've been rummaging around looking for suitable fabrics. I've got some but have ordered some others for a bit of the background.
I've got a lovely piece of black fabric with red spots for the dress.  :)

I don't think I can leave this idea alone now. I'm going to have to go along with it until it's finished (or until I suffer an epic fail and I end up setting it alight to put it out of its misery. I'll make sure I put some pics up of the ashes.  :S)

I've just got back from town and I've had the photo enlarged up to A4 size at the photocopy shop. Now I'm back home, I've just run another black and white copy off the colour one.

I've never done anything like this before and I'm sure I've picked the worse subject matter...( 'A real human in a photograph!? Yeah. Right. Good luck with that'.) ...for a first-timer.

You live and learn.

What is A4 size?  We don't use that designation in the US.

A4 is a standard sheet of paper Wendy ....

Great pic .. try and'cartoonify' her and it will save you some grief ... she look very Betty Boop* to me, dont you think?

* This is meant as a compliment!!!

I think it might be called letter size in the US.  Or legal maybe?
Title: Re: The Darksides Next Challenge ... Midsummer Applique Challenge
Post by: wrenkins on August 16, 2018, 15:14:20 PM
A4 measures 210 × 297 millimeters or 8.27 × 11.69 inches.  :)

Thanks ladies! Letter size then, or copy paper size. Legal size is same width but a couple inches longer.

I've run across that woed in books and assumed it was a type of paper, not a size. Interesting.

What is A4 size?  We don't use that designation in the US.

297 x 210 mm or 11.7 x 8.3 in
slightly narrower and slightly longer than US letter, but MUCH more useful because the ratio of long side to short side is such that if you cut it in half the proportions remain the same.

@Iminei - I promise, I really AM hoping to take part in this. I've ordered HeatnBond (which I've never used before) and some C*******s fabric which has red in it, so that's a good start. I just need to find my inspiration in a picture or photo. That's the hard bit. I've looked through all my paintings (100's of them) - but nothing jumps out at me, so next it'll be the painting books. I did think poppies but I didn't want to copy @Sandra but if she's definitely going with her daughter then I might give poppies a go.

@ladies ... Size is A4 or bigger .. no worries!

@Kenora ...

Advice for when using HnB ...

Draw your shape/image on the reverse (smooth side) of your sheet of HnB
then cut HnB 1cm from the edge of that shape.

Now iron onto your fabric ...
next cut fabric, making sure to cut round all fused HnB,
now you can cut the shape from that snip of fabric.
This way all traces of HnB will be removed from your fabric.   Simple you think !!!

BUT ...

if you cut shape directly out of your HnBed fabric, leaving the remnants of HnB on your fabric ...

I guarantee ...

you will put said fabric away after the project,
the HnB paper will work itself loose and come off fabric
and next time you take it out for a new project, ironing to make it nice and flat for pinning a pattern to or cutting from you will be left with a smeary mess on your iron, fabric, and ironing board!

Ask me how I know?!!!!  :S

Best thing in the universe is this (https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/shopping?q=tbn:ANd9GcSOeCis5tzJPszz7mBq3fS9VDDHHi7ocwmQ7I8mpDLIE_oLoRj0PCd6wk8Y-xq1HeKXG4f6DLEW2Zy9akNF7kZvlCpy-QZFU5sQpKIojTuoMuCAnS1jQXGO&usqp=CAc) ....

You can buy this in Lakeland at about £8 for a diddy sized tube ...
This is much better! I'm still on my first tube and I've been using it for over 3 years!
(and I use it a lot!)

These are my copies from the original photograph.

I've used the black and white copy to draw around and outline the different sections of the image. It's made it clearer to me now how many bits there are going to be and also, it's made it look as if I know what I'm doing.  0_0  It's good to think ahead and plan.
I'm going to try to highlight Gertie's arm and the side of her face/neck where the sun's hitting her, because I hope it will 'lift' the image and not make her look completely flat.
I expect...(if I get that far)...I'm going to need to add finishing touches with a few hand stitches.

These are fabrics I've found stashed away which will probably be suitable.

The red spotty is redder and spottier, which will probably suit this challenge better.

I have some other fabrics on order....but not much...honest.  :)

oops I seem to have strayed into the Darkside and came upon this challenge. I must admit I do like a bit of applique and giving some serious thought as to what I could do.
Can I do something to wear? I am thinking of a waistcoat. And can it be any type of applique?

This is as far as I've been able to get.

I've outlined the areas I hope to create of the background, and have drawn all over Gertie to try to imagine the bits I'll need to create her. She raised an eyebrow at me when I told her what I was planning to do.  ><
I've had a little more fabric arrive in the post...Not much, just a bit of greenery and some dark which might be suitable for the fencing.

I'm so busy at the moment, and am currently in bridesmaids' dress, (and general alterations) Hell, and have come to a standstill with this. But I'm keen to try my hand at this and hope I'll get back to it soon.

Righty-ho folks....I've made a start.

Can't say that I'm lovin' it  -< It looks a bit  :\ ...but I realise it's only the start. There's lots more to add to it yet, and I really haven't done much at all.
I've put the fence, lawn and some greenery.

I've deliberately NOT looked at online tutorials on -  How To Do This Properly, because then I'll realise I don't have - The Correct Equipment, and that I haven't a clue. I'd much rather bumble around and make it up as I go along.

I've planted the garden but still need a bit more doing around her feet....And YES...She will have feet.  :)

I can see that the background will benefit from a few stitches to blur the edges around the planting, and to add more to it so it's not so 'flat'.
Might add more detail to the fencing, for starters...and some sticky-out twiggy bits to the plant directly behind Gertie...We'll see.

Now I've got this far, I'm dreading creating the actual figure.  :S  This is going to be really tricky to NOT make her look deformed.
You might not hear from me again on this thread if it goes badly.  :\

I have lots of tartan scraps and bits of tweed! So inspired by a hare design cushion by Carola Van Dyke and a print by Neil Stevens I saw online , I’m going to try to come up with a cushion. I have a simple tartan patchwork cushion that I made last year ( you can just see in photo background), so this new one should hopefully fit on in my sofa.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Started it last night. My background tweed is a bit darker than the picture so not such a contrast, but so far, so good.

Mmmm, when to stop?  I always find it difficult to know when to stop adding things.  l think the grain heads might need more, but don’t want to completely obscure the tartan. Think the bottom of the hare needs a few more leaves maybe.

I know it doesn't look very exciting, but this is my inspiration ...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

His name is Barry and he used to live in a Cornish garden centre - he might still do, but the photo was taken years ago. I'm aware that he's grey but he's going to get a makeover into a red and blue maccaw - hope he likes it.  :)

I've only just made a start today as I had to finish sewing an urgent job for my charity work. I hadn't realised how much mess is made with applique - I've had paper and fabric all over the kitchen, with pens and scissors and goodness knows what flung everywhere ... but it was great fun. I'll try to take photos the next time I work on it.

Well, I'm getting on really slowly but I've purloined some parrots from t'internet, and inserted them into my own background. Not sure which one is Barry.  -<

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Then I made a start on tracing the pieces, which I've numbered and put into a tupperware container. (Thank you @Iminei for that tip - it's saved me losing tiny little claws and beaks - I'd have been struggling otherwise :( )

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I suspect I've bitten off more than I can chew but I'll carry on anyway. It's going to look a bit of a mess because I don't have enough variety in my stash, and I'm not buying any more fabric.  Hopefully it will at least resemble a parrot when I've finished, but we shall see -<

That is superb Sheilago ... very on trend as well.

Kenora, I think Barry is the one on the right (as you look at em) He looks a lil bit ashamed yet pleased with himself at the same time for escaping the garden centre and finding himself a mate!

and btw I dont think you've bitten off more than you can chew at all. I think your'e doing things exactly as they should be done ... What colourway of scraps are you short of?
Title: Re: The Darksides Next Challenge ... Midsummer Applique Challenge

@Iminei - I'm trying to create a jungle round Barry (not sure if that's his natural habitat or not) so that he and his mate will feel at home. My idea was to put dark green leaves or creepers over the foreground but not sure if it would've worked. :S I have enough red and yellow for Barry and ? so will try that this afternoon.

It's feeling very thick, and I've only fused cotton on top of cotton so far. I'm worried that my s/m won't go through the layers if I put wadding and backing on, so I might leave the wadding out. It's only going to be a wall hanging. Any advice?

Definitely Barry and Frieda .... and the rainforest is their home.

You should have no problem with it being too thick if you are using craft or dress weight fabric ...

Remember you dont have to layer the complete hanging ...  for instance...  If the sky disappears under foliage it doesnt have to be the full length and breadth of the hanging .. if you see what I mean ... If it does feel like its getting thick, stitch slowly.

Did you want some greens coming your way?

Thanks for the tip @Iminei - I've never done this before so it's all a big learning curve for me.  :\ Barry has emerged in his new colours but I think I need to change his beak because it doesn't show up against the background.  :S

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

If you have a couple of odd scraps you could spare, Iminei, then I would be very grateful, but please don't go to any trouble. I would send you the postage, of course. You can see from the photo that it looks a bit "samey" but the fabric isn't stuck down yet. And I still have to put in the bottom of the picture which I've cut off above.

Lots to do yet. :)

I've just spent an enjoyable evening 'planting the garden' around her. The garden's starting to look much better, but it's making Gertie look ...flat....amongst it. Need to try to bring her more to life if I can.  -<  The garden has background and foreground and some perspective. The figure is lacking that.

I'm done for today on it. I'll leave it hanging up above my sewing machine so I can stare at it over the next few days and plan what to do next.
Feeling cheerful today.  :)

Thread painting or Inktense pencils will be your friend there .....

Little noticed amongst The Village were the Heron (I know it looks like a vulture) and the sun lounger ... Both of which I cut from the ads in a gardening magazine, fused on and then sewed intensely over

you can get great 'depth' by a bit of simple shading, little by little!

Sandra, can you replicate the folds in the skirt that give it depth in the photograph - perhaps some semi transparent fabric (organza?)  Or, recut the skirt from sections of the spotted fabric so that it doesn't look flat.

I can see where I've lost the shading on the side of the dress where the sun's hitting her....and that's why she's looking flat.
I'll have to see what I can find and experiment.

I'm beginning to understand why TV took so long @Iminei  - and to appreciate the amount of work which went into it.  <3

Barry is now in a brand new jungle and, while it looks a bit "artificial" to me, I can't change it now. Every time I look at it I want to do something different but it's too late. I still want to add some hanging vines and creepers (and give Barry & friend their faces) but that's for this afternoon.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Then I'll have to start sewing - and there's where the problems begin. :S I rather think I've made a rod for my own back with so many "pointy bits" so looking closely at TV is very helpful. I'm going to have a practice later and see how I get on. I might be some time. :'(

(stern look over the glasses) Repeat after me ... My Jungle is  (insert your adjective here) brilliant!

Its bloody fantastic!!!

I love love love the stylised leaves  ... Inspired ... flipping fantastic ... this is going to be Blooming gorgeous!!!

Re Sewing ... Which fusi did you use?
Its raw edge applique remember and made up of a lot of batiks which minimise frayage ... and if there was minimal frayage it woluld just add to the texture to the foliage, feathers ... I just looove it!

Small stitch length and just inside the edge of the fabric, use the stitches to make veins if you wish ...
personally I wouldn't use a satin stitch or blanket stitch

Use stitches in a darker or lighter colour to contour the mountains ... Honestly K, its absolutely awesome!!!!

Thank you ladies, and thank you also for your advice @Iminei - it feels a bit like painting with fabric, but you can't make corrections, however much you'd like to!  :S

Regarding the sewing - I was going to use a small blanket stitch for the larger pieces, and then just a straight stitch for the rest. It's going to take me a while because I'm unable to do FMQ which gives me a pain in the neck (literally ). When I've finished putting the vines in (hopefully this afternoon) I'm going to have a practice with some scraps. I used Heat'n'Bond so I'm going to make a small mock-up and see how I go.

I used Heat'n'Bond lite or ultra ???

If you used Ultra you dont really need to stitch but excellent idea to have a practice on a spare piece ... Have you wadding or interfacing under them?? You will at least need some medium interfacing

Thanks @Sandra - you're very kind. I'm enjoying it as it's so like the painting I used to do, but I still think I might come unstuck when I start sewing. I spent all the afternoon "playing" with the vines at the top of the picture but I must start the sewing soon 'cos I think it's going to take forever. :)

@Iminei - sorry, I used H'n'B lite onto a piece of poly/cotton. I have a backing cut out but am still worried about the thickness of the whole thing. It feels really stiff so I think wadding will be too much, so maybe just a layer of interfacing. Will know more once I do my practice piece - am getting withdrawal symptoms from not sewing for so many days! :S

I've been planting the garden, and have pinned on a piece of tulle net over the side of the dress, to try to see if it will help give a bit of a light/shade effect on Gertie.
It helps. I think.

I still need to shade her arm, and I know I've got to do something with her hair  :o  it currently looks like a strange hat  0_0.
I'm hoping all the extra shading stuff will sort it all out.

I plan to make a frame (fabric) around it when I've finished.

Daughter doesn't like it and pulls a face every time she catches sight of it.

I've had another session with my 'Gertie in the Garden' picture.  :)  No pics today. I think the next picture will be when I'm finished with it.

I've attached the tulle properly to give the shading effect on the skirt...(it's OK)...and I've tried to improve the hair/face.  :[ ?

I've made a frame for it...black with an inner red strip, and that looks pretty good against it. It's hanging back up so I can have more thinking time to consider what else I could do to it.

I've been beavering away at my parrots (weird sentence - beavers & parrots together??). It's all taking a very long time, but at least my worries about the s/m needle not going through all the layers were wrong - it cuts through like a knife through butter. :) My stitching is a bit iffy though, but never mind, it's all a bit of fun - isn't it?? ;)

Seeing all those lovely pictures taking shape, I'm afraid I've been cowardly with my applique.  I started off wanting to do something bee related (red flowers of course) but somehow it morphed into something entirely different.  It's just 5 separate shapes.  There was no way I could machine round them so I hand stitched using embroidery thread and a heavy chain stitch - I haven't wielded a piece of embroidery thread since I was 16 and I quite enjoyed it (actually the green and yellow thread must be ones I had when I was 16).  The quilting and binding are a bit crap - I made an error in calculation and couldn't join the binding with a diagonal as I would usually do.  Anyway, warts and all here it is.  It measures about 13" x 10"

You are much too modest @Ploshkin. I think it’s much harder to hand embroider all that appliqué. It is beautiful! You certainly shouldn’t point out its alleged failings. The quilting looks perfect to me and I’d never have noticed the binding. Is it a wall hanging or a mat?

@Kenora it's actually a Norse Dragon, my metaphors are mixed because the knots are Celtic.  I just liked it.
@Sheilago it is most likely to be a cupboard dweller but may end up on a wall but not before I've sorted out the binding join which will only annoy me.

Thank you Ploshkin - he's very nice, and he's given me an idea. I have a friend who is very proud of her Welsh heritage. If I could find a Welsh dragon design on the internet (which I'm sure I could) it would look lovely as the applique'd centre of a cushion. <3

Here are cushions I made from Harris tweed for a Scottish/Welsh wedding. Not sure it’s really a traditional Welsh dragon, but it was a nice simple design to appliqué.

I'm done....don't think I can be bothered do any more ( for the time being). I'm going to leave it like this for now.

I knew early on that I'd chosen something which was going to be tricky to get right, but I'm happy with this. Even my daughter said she thought it was, 'actually, quite good'  :o
She declined the idea of a quilt though.  0_0

Her face/hair has more detail than you can see from the picture...it's just too subtle to show up. I couldn't seem to find some thread I was happy with and was worried about going too dark in case she looked grubby-faced instead. -< Also, I was worried about messing about with it too much and completely ruining it.

It has no backing on it yet. It's just got the frame for the time being until I find some backing fabric.

This is my first ever  applique, it's just not something I have ever had cause to do before.  I decided I was too cowardly to try and construct a picture and I wanted to use bits I already had and I don't have many fabrics to choose from.  Red eventually said dragon to me and I found this one which I liked and thought was doable.
Metaphors are a bit mixed because it is a Nordic dragon and Celtic knots.   I knew there was no way that I could machine round the shapes so I outlined them with a heavy chain stitch.  I haven't wielded an embroidery needle since I was 16 and soon realised that I hadn't chosen the best stitch to execute because of all the stops and starts (it has a back to front set up stitch each time you start and it took me a long time to get it looking tidy)

Anyway, here is my Nordic / Celtic fusion warts and all.  It is 13" x 10" with wadding and backed in the red fabric of the dragon.

I've never attempted anything like this before, and realised quite early on that I'd picked a subject which was going to be difficult to get right.

A photograph!

I started off by getting an A4 copy of the photograph, which I then copied a couple of times in black and white. I used the black and white to draw around and cut up, to decide which sections were going to be used to create the various sections of the picture.

I'd got a few suitable fabrics in my stash, and bought a couple more for the background. The picture slowly started to come together.

I enjoyed creating the garden in the background...a bit more applique added and a bit of machine and hand stitching.  :)

I realised I needed a bit more depth to the figure, and added some net/tulle over the one side to try to create where the sun was hitting on the original photograph.

I knew getting the face right was going to be the biggest problem.  :S  The colours are a bit too subtle, but I'll leave it as it is for now.
There are some details, but I can see they're too pale, and I lack the ability/knowledge/artistry/skills to do them any differently for now.

Finished off with a frame.

Well, here is my effort. I've done almost no applique before, but with the help of Iminei's tutorial and YouTube videos I've learnt a lot - and enjoyed the process.

My inspiration was Barry the Parrot - a photo taken years ago in a garden centre. (I'm sorry - I tried inserting my photos but they all came out as the same photo!)

Anyway, then I found a couple of parrot drawings on the internet, and added my own background. This made my template for the applique picture.

So here is Barry, and his mate Edna, in their jungle home.

The finished size is 18" x 14" and the wall hanging is backed by the same cream as the border. It took me a very long time to tie in and bury each thread on the back as I went, but now I've covered it over by the backing so I probably shouldn't have bothered. You learn as you go!

I couldn't have managed the detail without the amazing generosity of Iminei, who sent me lots of her green fabric scraps from TV. Thank you so much.

I used blanket stitch around the larger pieces, and straight stitch for the foliage, with a decorative stitch to try and suggest feathers on the parrots. I should have used different colour threads which would show up more but I used what I had at hand.

I hadn't thought what to do with it - the parrots are currently being flattened under my cutting mat in the spare room. -<  If I was going to hang it I'd have to look up on Google how to make a sleeve for it.

ETA : Do we have a tutorial on here anywhere, perhaps???
Title: Re: The Darksides Next Challenge ... Midsummer Applique Challenge

Sleeves are easy K. You can't let them moulder away in a drawer/cupboard, not after the beautiful job you did.

The standard size for Exhibition Quilts is 4" wide by 2" less than the width of the quilt.... But thats for the BIG quilts

What size lath are you going to hang them on?
I should imagine you wouldn't need anything too sturdy.
A trip to your local DIY or timber store will find you a length of something suitable.

Simple explanation of how to make a sleeve ... For your size of Hanging .... 18" long x 14" wide.

Find a strip of wood about 1 1/2" wide x 1/4" thick and cut to your preferred length

Cut a rectangle of your backing fabric 14" x 5" .
Turn the short edges over by 1/2"  twice, press and stitch down to make a neat edge
Your rectangle will measure something along the lines of 12" x 5" now.

Now fold the rectangle in half WRONG sides together
Stitch along the length to make a tube with the raw edged seam on the outside
Your sleeve will measure something like 12" x 4 - 4 1/2" now depending on your seam allowance

Open and press with the raw edged seam in the middle of the rectangle of fabric.
Turn so the raw edged seam lies against the back of the hanging
Position just below the binding and equidistant from each side of the hanging
Slip stitch along the top, bottom layer of the sides and bottom of the sleeve

Blimey!!!  :S  that sounds awfully clunky when written down, but it really is very straightforward to do.

and there will be lots of tuts on Youtube that make it much easier to understand!
