The Show Must Go On / Re: Top stitching seams on stretch tutu
« on: June 21, 2020, 13:44:18 PM »
I use a coverstitch to top stitch the seams.  There are 2 stretch stitches that sewing machines can have, the lightning bolt stitch (diagram looks like it sounds) and/or the triple stretch stitch (3 broken parallel vertical lines).  If the lightning bolt stitch does not give the look you require (the look varies on machines), try the triple stretch stitch.  This is the one Dani and Barbara use.  It is a nightmare to unpick though.  Coverstitch gives the best look.

The Show Must Go On / Re: How do I do a back like this?

How have you done the sides?  Depending on the design, it may help to elasticate them.  As there is no picture to see what you have done, this is only a guess as to how to rectify it.

The Show Must Go On / Re: High neck on a leotard too baggy
« on: April 25, 2017, 10:04:59 AM »
Hi.   It looks like the neckline of the leotard could come up a bit higher before the collar is sewn on.  Also, it is best to cut the collar more to the neck measurement of the dancer and add the necessary amount for the join/overlap at the back, and then stretch it on to the leotard neckline and sew on.

Well done!  Did the top skirt fight back or did it behave itself and sew on reasonably easily?

You need to stitch it on to the top layer of net as close as you can to the lycra bodice.  Don't sew it to the lycra as the stitches will snap as soon as the lycra is stretched.  It's not an easy thing to sew on and I find a curved needle very useful.

MarnieSews - do NOT get me started on chiffon.....  :(  To be avoided at all costs.  Best to look for alternatives that behave!

If you look at the Tutus That Dance patterns (www.tutusthatdance.com), they have a variety of patterns you could use, both stretch and non stretch.  You could use the 6000 Russian bodice style leotard and attach the skirt wherever you like, waist, dropped waist, high hip.  If you are going down the non stretch route, then you could use the traditional Engllish V point pattern, or the Russian.  My personal preference with this type skirt is the drop waist and there are a few of those on the site too, with or without sleeves.  Have fun! :-)

If you do an image search with google, you will see quite a variation.  Some on the high hip, some at the waist and some with a dropped waist bodice.

Hi, I'm new... / Hello Again!

Hi to all from another TSF Member since 2007.  Same name - lack of imagination!  The Other Half suggested, too late, that I should have used Seam Stress(ed).   ><

So lovely to see this forum spring up after the demise of TSF and to see so many familiar names.

I having been making tutus for far too long and other stretch dancewear and it is my full time job, hence my OH's witty suggestion for a forum name!  I have also been known to do a little teaching on the Tutus That Dance Seminars in the UK and have met many mad tutu ladies in the process.  They're a great bunch!

Great to be back!

Oakmaiden - rather than sewing the elastic on first or last, how about creating a casing, either by turning up a hem and topstitching, using a lycra strip as a bias, or if you line your pants, sewing lining and fabric together wrong sides together, turning right way out and topstitching about 3/8 away from the edge to form a casing.  Sew your net on and then thread elastic through the casing and close your crotch seam.

The Show Must Go On / Re: Which tutu net ????
« on: March 12, 2017, 15:34:28 PM »
Mainly look to use the 40 denier nets, but add a couple of extra stiff layers in (the 60 denier), possibly, from the top, layer 2 to support any decoration on top of the skirt, and layer 5 to support the hoop on layer 4.
