Title: Septembers Final BOM - Slipknot
Post by: Iminei on August 30, 2020, 08:28:05 AM
The Month of Mellow Fruitfulness is upon us ....

and to finish this years set of Blocks
we have another TWO Part Block of the Month ...

Both blocks are Illusion blocks and use techniques you've already practised,

Tutorials for the various techniques are available in The Darkside Tutorial thread

Do read right through the SEPTEMBERS BOM tutorial before you start cutting!!!

So without further ado ...

Here we are at the EIGHTH month of the 2020 BOM !

SEPTEMBER's BOM (https://photos.app.goo.gl/mUpHQUas72HR5gbf8)

There are a minimum of Twelve 12" blocks for this years BOM:
Some months you will have two blocks to make and some only one.

In October I will guide you through layering and quilting your blocks
and in November I will take you through  assembling them, using a QAYG method,
into a fabulous lap or cot sized quilt (or even a series of comfy cushions.)

And everyone who finishes the year with a completed quilt (or full series of cushions)
will receive an exclusive The Sewing Place Prize Winners Badge or Sew on Patch

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]       [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I have chosen a monochrome theme with pops of colour for my quilt,
you may choose whatever colourway/theme you like ...
Brights, plains, patterns, pastels, neutrals ... the choice is yours!

As ever when you click on the link, select the first picture,
and click on the i icon to bring up the destructions
on the right side of your screen.

Do read through The Basic Basics Thread before you start.

Please post pics of your blocks each month
and by the end of the year we will have a fantastic album for the archives

I'm not sure I'm speaking to you.  :faints:
I would say WTF but I'm a layyyydy.

Also...a challenge because the BOM clearly isn't.  :o I didn't think I had any scraps but clever hoarding old Wrenkie has a baggie full. Whether any of them are useful remains to be seen.  :S

I'm currently sitting here with a pile of cut pieces ready for the first block.

I don't anticipate being disturbed today  -< so that's why I've started already.

@Sandra you are SUCH a teacher's pet!
I have half a pile of tiny pieces of all different sizes for the same shapes block. I was hoping to be inspired when I looked at them but nope!
They are beautifully ironed.

I seem to either jump straight in, or leave it for a few days to 'think' about it.

I'm wondering which block is going to make us feel like crying. I think it's the next one isn't it? Looks a likely candidate.
Maybe it's all of them.

My problem with HSTs is the bulk at the corners. My machine just will not have it! The slightest thickness sends it off course and makes    me     mad!  There's only so much steamrollering you can do.

I'm  not even going to think about the challenge one until I've done the first two. I dont know how many scrappy bits I'll have until then. It may have to be multi coloured.

Oh wow you have been a busy bee. I hope the cat's ok. Him indoors' feral visitor went from very fat to quite slim on Sunday so there are kittens somewhere. He thinks they're in his wide hedge so she's safe there. It's a terrible worry when they're ill.  <3

I've had a traumatic busy morning and here's what happened.

Part two done.  It's going to need quilting to death to get it to behave, but it's done.  It's lying on the backing fabric in the picture so that the green of the cutting mat didn't show through.  It's not so that I can hide the fact that it's rather short of 12.5in square.  Of course not.

Post by: Iminei on September 03, 2020, 07:36:20 AM
@Acorn  ... Did you make that using our cheats methods of HST's Geese and SiS or the Traditional method as I did? Only asking because I can see you had the same problem as I did with (just) one of your Geese (unlike my 3 Gonky Geese)

and mine is short too!

Apart from that Its beautiful and I wholeheartedly agree that your quilt is going to be beautiful ... In fact most of them are going to be ... Im in big awe of what you girls have done this year ... youve excelled yourselves!

Now run along and get that second bottle of fizz in the fridge for the others once they've finished their three blocks

Title: Re: Septembers Final BOM
Post by: Acorn on September 03, 2020, 09:50:17 AM
I used the traditional method - I guess there's something to be said for the cheats' method.  I did undo part of it and resew because more of them were out of line.  I also had to redo the centre square because it came out too big - which never happens for me!
Title: Re: Septembers Final BOM
Post by: Kenora on September 03, 2020, 14:28:06 PM
It's beautiful @Acorn.  <3 Love your fabrics too. I'm only just starting mine (wish me luck) so please save some fizz for when if I get to the BOM HOF. :)
Title: Re: Septembers Final BOM
Post by: wrenkins on September 03, 2020, 15:53:06 PM
My geese came out too big by a good bit. I just centred them and trimmed almost 1/4" off each side after I'd sewn. By that point there might have been muttering about marathons...not the Snicker sort and where's DDD so I can put her windies in!
I am finally left with a nine patch to assemble and am having a sit down and a caramel wafer.  :faints:

I am loving these blocks. Thanks @Iminei

Update:-

Here 'tis. The whiskers at the side are what I shaved off to make it twelve and a half. I did a happy dance when I finished it.

I've cut out the pieces for the first one.
Going to take it easy but love the design.

Title: Re: Septembers Final BOM
Post by: Iminei on September 04, 2020, 10:05:05 AM
THAT is Wonderful @wrenkins  and the first one (I think) that is the right size ...
Can I ask which method you used for the HST's, SiS and FG ???

Run along and join Sandra and Acorn in the BOMHOF, you might want to take her some aspirin, and the extra fizz is in the back of the cupboard!

Title: Re: Septembers Final BOM
Post by: wrenkins on September 04, 2020, 15:35:49 PM
HSTs I cut 2 1/2" squares, cut them on the diagonal and trimmed to 2"
FG were made using three individual triangles, very long winded and very weird! These I needed to trim nearly 1/4" off each side but I waited till I had got as far as my nine patch at the end to make sure.
SiS I cut the square at three and sixpence (can't remember) and added the triangles cut from a 4 and a bit " square bisected diagonally twice. Two sides then the other two sides.
Every time I sewed a bit I checked for points and seams and I didn't miss one. I did sew very carefully and steamrollered it on the bread board. At one point I was hammering a really thick junction with the back of a spoon!  :faints: Who is it has a hammer? Is it @Gernella ?

It is now quilted to within an inch of it's life and ready to go for sashing.
And I have a hump like a camel.

75 pieces m'lady!!! ><
Title: Re: Septembers Final BOM
Post by: Gernella on September 04, 2020, 16:22:09 PM
Yes I have a hammer @wrenkins, which has various duties including being used to hold a pattern down  sometimes.

Having a looked at your post, it makes my proposed Chanel project look a piece of cake. Also the HSTs   SiS and FG, it's another flipping language :scream:

I would agree with you @wrenkins I've had samples before and they were fraying as soon as I opened the envelope.  This looks quite a solid fabric, it had better be, I've just ordered it.

It took me a couple of hours to make the first block but almost as long to figure out how to transfer the photo from my phone to my laptop via wifi  :S. Gggrrr. Technology is wonderful when it works. :)

Here is my well-steamrollered block. Need a cuppa and a long sit down before I start to tackle the next one.

Loving what everyone’s done with this block, they all look great.  It’s the kind of patchwork look I really like so hopefully eventually I’ll have a go at it.

I’m struggling to get any sewing done as can’t fit in just a bit here and there as my sewing rooms being used for other things so can’t leave things out.

We’re all good, staying healthy so far.  I’m missing the patchwork sewing a lot, keep dreaming about getting my 2019 temperature quilt made but when I do sew it’s mending or household things that need done.

Then when I find time to pop on here I get distracted wanting to make blocks like this instead and add yet another thing to my sewing to do list haha.

@Iminei do I need to do a better photo of my Tangled star, I know it's not a good one (photo that is)

Thank you @Lowena . You were quite right when you said it looked fiddly. I found it was. Normally, I have lots of patience with quilt blocks but it's been so hot and humid here recently that my patience dissolved.  -<

I have no idea how long I took but him indoors came in and turned the light on!!!  I was completely sucked in.
I took no shortcuts and did all the tiny pieces (75). I had to trim the flying geese and that was the only adjustment. Don't know if that'll help you or make it worse.  :[

@Iminei thank you for the kind offer but I think I've finished with the purple now.
I've just counted up and I have 15 blocks. Is that right or have I missed one? Looks like I will have to find some scraps, or maybe do something completely different. Or something.

Well you must all have at least 9 beautiful blocks to make up, or 12 or even 16 ....

Myself Im no t loving either of my courthouse step[s blocks so they may well not make the final cut ...
but my second (Full) log cabin I like now.

If there is one you like but arent so happy with the finish, why not revisit it???
You're all much more skilled than you were at the start of this.

I finished my block last week but forgot to post the photo. >< It turned out Ok-ish but I can't say it was one I enjoyed making - even though I like the block.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I now have 14 blocks and have decided on a layout for my quilt. The 2 blocks I like the least will be going on the back. :) I doubt I'll get the challenge block made as I have a lot going on here so it's going to
take me all my time just to finish the quilt.

Thank you. Strangely, the purple cotton is absolutely rubbish quality but behaves perfectly. :o The green is a good quality quilting cotton but has a mind of its own - it stretches out if you even look at it!  :S Don't look too closely at the block. (But I'm quite pleased with the photo I took of all the blocks together to decide on the final layout) :)

Ooh, started the tangled star tonight.... lots and lots of unpicking.  :faints:
Maybe I was too tired after a busy day, but I now have the 9 component blocks finished,  I think. Had to give up at 10pm, so will hopefully finish it tomorrow.

The next one doesn’t look any easier!
Title: Re: Septembers Final BOM
Post by: Sheilago on September 18, 2020, 18:34:26 PM
Here is is - a bit wonky, but not surprising after all the unpicking. Also my medium and dark are too similar and the light is too light. Otherwise it’s perfect!  Ideally I would do another one, but just don’t have time just now. It’ll do, it’s only for the spare room!

I’m thinking that when it comes to the quilting I could quilt the light blue pieces in darker thread to highlight the shape.  Mmm or maybe do a bit of machine embroidered outline, before I quilt.

Well, I finally got the bits cut out!

It's proving a great relief from the hecticness of tidying and cleaning the house to within an inch of its life. I decided to have a day off from house-selling / hunting biz today - only had a couple of peeks at sites  :[  I would so like a sewing room - even better if it can house the piano as well.

Back to the Sewing room that is really a Dining room.

OK. Here's no.1

Not as much contrast as I'd like between Bg and Middle colour but there ya go. Went together reasonably well. A bit of tiddling about to get points where they are. Not perfect but not bad.

Just a quick question. I am not quite sure about this part. I have now got 12 blocks which I am happy with, I have done all the main blocks I think, but not the bonus blocks. Is it ok if I leave the remaining blocks and make my quilt with the 12 I have done? I would love to do the other four (?) but I can see that work is not realistically going to leave me with enough time to do that.

I've quilted 12. I'm running very low on backing fabric and I can't find any more, so 12 it is.
In fact, I unquilted one I wasn't so keen on so I could pinch the fabric off the back. All the strips have been cut to join the backing.
I've got an order for some more of my background fabric, and then I'll be ready to cut out all of the joining strips for the quilt top.  :)

I had to buy xtra for the sashing, which is  not cut out.
The background dabic seemed discontinued so hoping the sashing will give it a bit more spice - even more than yellow colours I would  not usually go for for anything

I am making the 16th block using scraps not even sure yet if it will be ok so may lose it later

There are still some blocks to quilt
Title: Re: Septembers Final BOM
Post by: Kenora on September 24, 2020, 17:54:53 PM
I was working on my blocks the day before yesterday, and it was a lovely sunny afternoon. I had cut out all 12 backing squares and wadding pieces for my quilt, and was layering them one by one. I got to the last one - I had the wadding but couldn't find the backing fabric that I'd cut out for it. I spent half an hour looking for the wretched piece, and I was getting more and more frustrated, but it just wasn't anywhere in my (reasonably tidy) sewing room. :S Eventually I gave in and cut out another backing piece - luckily I had just enough fabric for one more piece. I spent all evening wondering whether I was going mad, as I knew I'd cut out enough pieces for the whole quilt.

The next morning my DH came into the kitchen, waving a small wet and very bedraggled scrap of fabric at me. "Did you lose something?" he said, grinning. It was my missing backing piece which he'd found on the paving under the window of my sewing room. Moral of the tale:- don't have the window open when you're working, no matter how nice a day it is.

All 12 blocks are now layered, quilted and squared to size. The extra two blocks I made have been put on the back - which was quite hard to line up for quilting with the wadding in between them. I'm reasonably happy with the way it's gone but there will be some points chopped off once I come to add the sashing. :S It can't be helped, and I'm not making the blocks again.

25th Sept and I’ve just finished my second Sept block! This was certainly well out of my comfort zone, though I love the result. I didn’t read the instructions properly, of course, and cut out all the pieces in brackets too, so plenty bits for my final block
This block will have central pride of place in my quilt as I’m sure I’ll never make such a fiddly block again! I am thinking of scaling the design up, though and making it into a scrappy play quilt.. Think that would look good

26th September, puffing and panting, here's September's 2nd BOM.

I love the in-and-out-and-going-behindness of the result and thought Imi played a blinder with the destructions   I did the cheats' version, couldn't be doing with stretchy diagonals.

An important lesson I've learnt from all these BOMs is not to choose one-way designs unless you have a very simple block  :[   But I love my Dotty Reeds so much that I had to give them one last outing   :D

May not get Bonus Block done as I have had an offer for my house and one accepted for my new, very own sewing room with house and garden attached!

I’m going to be plagiarising quite a few quilting ideas, when I get round to it. I did toy with the idea of QAYG, but have decided to do a conventional quilt. Just waiting for more sashing fabric to arrive to sew my blocks together, before I get round to quilting. May well copy yours @Sandra .

Been a Looooong day of catching up on 3 months worth! Five blocks completed today!

I turned the corners squares on the first one, just because I liked them better this way. The second one I did NOT enjoy. Too many small pieces and bulky corners. I think I'd like to try this one on a larger scale though, maybe as a single-block throw.
