Patterns Discussion / Re: PDF patterns idiot`s guide required

As @Vezelay says, add extra seam allowance. It’s worth doing if you want to make the garment.
Of course, you could always buy an overlocker  :)
The narrow SA is fine if you know it’s going to fit and there’s really no waste but a bit skimpy otherwise.

I made the Harper cardigan and quite like it.  As someone who is only 5 ft I was happy to give it a go.  However I found the sleeves a bit too long and the band was very wide for my neck at the back.  So I ran a line of gathering stitches in the centre of it.   Im not usually one who uses commercial patterns but this was free and I’m always on the lookout for cardigan ideas. But so many of them are edge to edge which annoys me.
It's worth pointing out that the seam allowances on these patterns are very small, about 6mm so be careful

I then bought the Jemma tunic and I need to shorten that a bit and I’m not sure if I like the neck band or not.  It might have been better with a shaped one so it lays better.  There was also a lot of bulk when trying to sew it and that's awkward on a narrow seam allowance.  But overall these are quite nice patterns and I don’t say that about many!

Looking at Pinterest for pattern cutting, dressmaking etc, there is often stunning stuff coming out of Russia.  Some inspirational design and cutting.

If you’ve moved the slider that’s the same thing.  Always use double fabric.  Forgot to mention that.

I assume it’s the same buttonhole foot as this video?  Don’t for e the foot and make sure the lever is brought down at the back. If it’s working on straight stitch then the feed dogs are up so it's not that.
Have you put a button in the back?

Sewing Machines / Re: The ultimate machine
« on: January 27, 2020, 13:50:18 PM »
@Gernella re number 12 do you mean a twin needle button?   Brother machines have that.  You just have to remember to switch it on.   :) :o
Machines that can do zig zag can use twin needles.  You just have to make sure they aren’t wider than your widest stitch width or they will catch on the needle plate.

That’s great.  I’m just picturing you shopping in Sainsbury’s in it!   :)
Great idea for the side panels.  I’ve had a couple of sequin tops with short sleeves and they can make your arms really sore.

@Marniesews yes I think I’d  have trouble with my fingers too.  They’re bad enough as is.  But I’d love to be able to produce that sort of work.

That’s a shame about Kleins.  I didn’t use them often but they had stuff online you couldn’t get easily elsewhere.

@Iminei did you try phoning Stone Fabrics?  I’ve always found them very fast.

Interesting article.  I’d like to see more of this around.  But it’s  not  in the shops where I go.

@Sewingsue this has some info and is useful if you need to know what cup size they are drafting for.
Otherwise as Kwaaked said, check out their size/measurement chart.  If there is finished measurements that’s even better!

@Acorn I agree that the Big 4 aren’t as good as they used to be.  And I’ve come across some really bad errors and terrible instructions.  But they generally mark the bust point, etc.  And yes some of the indie pattern companies are good.  But I have come across some reallyl dire ones.  And many of these patterns aren’t produced by pattern cutters but by people who like sewing and think they'll have a go.   :S.   I think it’s insulting to ask the public to pay quite a lot of money, often more than the Big 4, for what is essentially an amateur job which you then have to print yourself if it’s a pdf.
I always suggest people look at the About Me piece.

I’d be inclined to fold back the tights so you have a fold at the top, right sides together.
Make sure of the amount you want to lose and don’t forget it’s on a fold so the depth will be half the total.   :).  Make sure it’s even all round.  Pin at the base of the waistband.  I would use a zig zag stitch as it has some give.  The best one is a triple zig zag as it has lots of give.  Don’t cut the excess off till you’ve tried them and made sure they’re right.
