In the wardrobe / Interfacing question
« on: November 01, 2017, 16:27:16 PM »
I know there's all sorts of stuff for interfacing coats, but what I actually have is iron on medium (possibly light) weight or iron on heavy weight, so I'm presuming the heavy weight for the wool mix fabric, but is ironing it on going to be ok?  Or shall I just sew it in?  Can I even just sew it in?  I am obviously after a bodge it solution  :D

In the wardrobe / Tartan/check coat, Vogue 8933 or Butterick 6497...
« on: October 28, 2017, 16:33:49 PM »
I now have the fabric and patterns, so need to make a decision - the nicely detailed Butterick and alter the collar to make it a longer pointed one, or the much simpler, but then possibly a bit shapeless Vogue?  I think I'm leaning toward the Butterick, but will have to make sure it will actually go round my, err, body-where-a-waist-should-be, and my hips.  Whichever I do, it will be slightly longer than hip length, I think...

The fabric is a lovely deep pink on grey, so I think it's calling out for some pink lining?

In the wardrobe / Vogue 9230 - again
« on: October 24, 2017, 12:31:55 PM »
I said last time I'd never do this pattern again, but I do like the finished garment.  https://jaycotts.co.uk/products/v9230-misses-asymmetrical-hem-high-collar-jackets#.We8kXWiPJPY

The pattern calls for 3.1 metres - I have 2.1m.  There's nothing like being a bit over-ambitious is there?
I did look to see if My Fabrics had some more material, but no joy this time, so a-bodging I will go  0_0

I decided I could do away with lots of the strips of facings, including the overlap bit at the waist, that'd reduce the amount needed by lots.
I've ended up recutting the bottom pieces without any pleats or gathers, no overlap for the centre overlap for the back bits, and reducing the length by 2 inches.  It's just squeezing on, although the pockets may have to be made from a different fabric, and I need to squeeze a second collar layer and a front facing, although that can be bodged as just a strip I'm sure.

In the wardrobe / Coat pattern and fabric help please
« on: October 23, 2017, 12:30:01 PM »
I saw this coat and fell in love - but of course they don't go up to FM sizes (Fu... errrr, Fairly Massive!).
So can anyone help with an online source of fabric - I think it's the colour and the huge size of the checks that I like - and I'll have a search for the pattern - the collar and the rounded fronts are the key things I think.

Oh, you'll need a linky  - https://www.lookagain.co.uk/products/stand-out-check-coat-by-joe-browns/_/A-43E740_10

Sewing Machines / Beginning to regret buying this machine - possibly...
« on: October 21, 2017, 13:43:57 PM »
I've had nothing but trouble with my Pfaff Expression 4.2 this morning
The automatic thread cutter was not working every time, and seemed to be pulling the material too, so I thought it may be time for a clean out under the needle plate.  I was right  :|  However it didn't make much difference.  I then realised that the bobbin was kind of sticking, but put that down to it being nearly empty, and that's better now I've wound a full one - it could of course be the cheap thread too, but then I usually use cheap thread!  Then the needle got stuck in the material (ok, it was, errr, 6(?) layers of babycord, double folded narrow hem at a corner = 6 I think), and the electronic wizardry kept cutting the motor out, then I kept pressing the button to get the needle up and it wouldn't, kept cutting out.  My brain then woke up again and I turned the hand wheel backwards  :|  Next, I repeated this 6 layers trick at the other end and snapped the needle.  Why was I surprised??  I had already done this collar on a denim type material and it had been ok.
Getting annoyed with it now, so have walked away for a few minutes.  Oh, and this is the top where I'd cut two right backs and had to order more material, it just seems destined not to be made  :S
I love all the fancy gizmos of this machine, like the buttons for the presser foot or needle down, and of course the automatic thread cutter, and the super buttonholes, but I did swap back to my Elna the other day and it just stitches so much better and seems much smoother.
Ok, rant over, back to it  :)

Embroidery and Embellishment / Not so much zing and bling as subtle...
« on: October 13, 2017, 12:19:19 PM »
All this talk of embroidery machines has made me get mine out again.  I'm making another Vogue 9112 top (my latest favourite) and as it's in some very dark brown fabric, I thought I'd add some of these briar rose designs from Urban Threads.  Still not sure about the brown - the pic just doesn't show the correct colour either - I think I want it closer to the fabric colour, subtle is today's key word.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Camelot Crafts...
« on: October 01, 2017, 15:15:29 PM »
... is a shop just down the road from me (well a couple of miles), and I finally went in to it on Friday - it's absolutely full of quilting fabrics, I never knew there would be so many!!  It also has all sorts (lots and lots!) of general sewing bits and pieces and, most usefully for me, machine embroidery stabilisers.

So no, I'm not going over to the Dark Side, but thought some of you may be interested if you're ever over Skeg way - although I fully understand it may not be a place you want to visit  :S

Yesterday I gave my Brother 3034D a quick clean out after I finished using it.  I did fiddle with the upper knife, just seeing how to retract it and put it back, and pulled out the stitch finger thingy and put that back.  Today, it won't cut the edges  :(
I've fiddled again and all bits seem to be seated ok, so now I'm stuck.  I was about to order new upper and lower blades, but thought I'd ask you knowledgeable people if you have any ideas before I blow £44.  And if any one has the 3034 could they possibly take a piccy of the knife's position?

In the wardrobe / Vogue 9230 - 21 pattern pieces...
« on: September 22, 2017, 16:04:58 PM »
... just cut the pattern out, now for the fabric.  And then the sewing...
Why do I always pick patterns with thousands of pieces???

Has anyone else made this pattern?  I'm hoping it goes together ok, it looks a little, errrr, involved.

Fun with Fabric / Embellished fabric
« on: September 21, 2017, 18:45:31 PM »
This came from here - https://ukfabricsonline.com/ice-cream-trim-jersey-fabric and was nice and cheap.  However, I'm wondering how much of the swirly bits will be left after it's washed as they don't seem to be sewn on very well!  Also I'm not at all sure pale pink is my colour, but what the heck!
It's been interesting to sew too, as if you get a very lumpy bit in a seam, it goes off course.  Almost finished though, and looking good.

In the wardrobe / Butterick B6491 as a waterproof(ish) coat
« on: September 20, 2017, 20:10:35 PM »
Used this fabric in navy https://ukfabricsonline.com/high-quality-softshell to make this pattern up.  I'm reasonably pleased with the result, it'll be great for dog walking and it's very light and hopefully not warm - I get so hot!
I tried sewing with a microtex needle to start with, but it wasn't having it, so tried a universal and it work reasonably well although there was the occasional skipped stitch.  There were lots of skipped stitches on single thicknesses eg stay stitching the neck edge.
I don't know why it seems to be "dragging" down at the front from the poppers (kam snaps, another thing I've discovered recently!), but maybe that'll disappear with wearing.
(Note to self, for heaven's sake, stand up straight and shoulders back for photos!!)

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Brother CV3550 double cover stitch machine

It's new and I've just ordered one!  It does an overlocking stitch on both sides, can't wait to play with it!

Patterns Discussion / Shortening Vogue 9112
« on: September 10, 2017, 22:02:50 PM »
Having made my first one of these dresses, I would love to make shorter versions to wear as tunic tops.  Where would you all shorten it, given all those seams and shaping??

Linky to pattern - https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v9112

I'm off for a short holibobs for a few days, so time to think about this one - but I do have a few lengths of fabric ready...  0_0

In the wardrobe / How to "decorate" this black top...
« on: September 06, 2017, 12:11:21 PM »
...with this lovely chiffon fabric I bought?  I am so not artistic I just can't think how to use it.  I've looked at Joe Browns for inspiration, but not really found anything.  I'm sure most of you peeps have much more artistic ability than me, can anyone give me any ideas?  Btw, the hem is level, it's just hanging off the bed, and no, it's not pressed or threads cut off yet  :P

Fun with Fabric / Jersey fabric falling apart
« on: August 29, 2017, 12:07:17 PM »
One of the lovely jersey tops I've made recently is falling apart - the fabric just seems to be disintegrating at all the seams.  Do you think it's just the fabric, or something to do with my sewing?  I overlocked the seams as I usually do, and none of the seams are under any strain as it's loose fitting.
I'm very annoyed as I love the top, but can't really think of any way of rescuing it.  The pics are taken from the inside of the top against the light, it's a black fabric with white daisies on it.
