Sewing Machines / Re: Bernina 570 mistake help
« on: October 21, 2023, 10:09:49 AM »
All these electronic/computerised gadgets are so complicated. I need a bulb changing in one of my machines but wouldn’t attempt it lest I break something. Changing the bulb on my Singer Featherweight in comparison, no problemo. However, I do want some of the bells and whistles featured in modern machines. Your straight stitch machine sounds divine @Celia.

Very impressed @Ploshkin. Have you taken any lessons at all or are you entirely self-taught? Even more impressive if the latter.

Wow, I read the thread title and I wrongly assumed you had finished your first knit of 2023.  :o  Lovely colour.

Which video did you use @Ann ?

Thank you for sharing these with us, @Ploshkin:loveit:

:D Excellent save. I was a bit surprised at the extension table splitting. The delivery people may have dropped it from a great height.  >:)

Sneaky devil did well. I think you will find the 201 has great punch power for the heavier duty gear you like to sew. This is what I am told anyway. I would love a 201 but a. I don’t actually need one b. not sure where I would store it. Enjoy your new toy and play nicely with it.

I've also turned.off the best shot feature, which takes about a second of video

Ah, so that’s what that little snippet of video is called. (Lightbulb emoji required) Completely unrelated to this thread of course, but I frequently learn random stuff here.  :)

Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hi I’m new here

Welcome to TSP. I am old enough for grandchildren but alas have none so I sew for myself. Look forward to seeing your projects.

I am not standard in any way. I can try a pile of clothes in a shop and leave with nothing. If something does fit, it’s a fluke. The other considerations for RTW are colours, patterns and fabric composition most of which are not to my liking. I’m just a fussy madam. You are lucky those brands suit you well @Lowena. Envious.

On the subject of well fitting vs wearable, when i was sewing clothes in my teens through to my 30’s, garments were wearable (some just about) but they did not fit. I had no clue how to alter a pattern other than to take in or let out a seam. Even in those days my back was rounded and necklines would choke me. I was much larger than a B-cup so I would compensate by making a larger size resulting in shoulders and necklines that were way off. Sheesh, I think back and think, what was I thinking?

Thank you @Pearl. There were some stunning pieces.

Publications / Re: The Fitting Book by Gina Renee Dunham?
« on: August 06, 2023, 08:22:02 AM »
Thanks for your encouragement @Ohsewsimple;) I too have had it on and off and back on my wish list along with the one by Kenneth King. I guess we are searching for the holy grail but in fact there are useful hints and tips in all these books. Gets quite obsessional after a while and I must tame the urge to acquire, acquire, acquire.

I watched this recently which is why Gina’s book went back on my wish list. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhtp_BVkyfE

The Haberdashery / Re: Quality interfacings for dressmaking
« on: July 27, 2023, 07:19:08 AM »
Thanks Puzzler.   The ECC interfacings are the ones  I've used for years so I'm well and truly spoiled.   I agree the fine cotton fusible is great.
Anyway, it's equivalent replacements for the ECC ones I'm trying to find

I wasn’t too clear about what I was trying to say. I wanted to know which other interfacings apart from the one I mentioned do people find useful so I can try and get some from ECC before they close down and then source from somewhere else thereafter.
