Title: Juki TL-2010Q
Post by: rubywishes on March 01, 2017, 08:53:09 AM
I can't believe I am contemplating it....I have Bernice the Bernina 710 and I am meant to love her.  :-[ But can I tell you a secret? I think I was just infatuated with her, I was dazzled by her whizzy computer screen and 9mm feed dogs and now, 2 years later it's starting to wane. She's temperamental and finicky and I think she needs to be owned and operated by a maestro.  And now I've stumbled upon the Juki and it just seems to call to me.....it's a straight stitch only machine, it's sturdy, mechanical, no nonsense, no gazillion tricks or stitches...just an honest work horse that according to all the reviews I've read, will piece and straight stitch quilt including fmq, until the end of time.

I now realise I don't need all the bells and whistles of the Bernina. I have come to the realisation that I will never use the decorative stitches, or zipper-thingy foot, or button-holey foot and whilst the BSR is nice it isn't the bees knees either. And all the computer push button whizzy things..meh.  ::) I will never sew clothes, or furnishings, or tizzy little things for the grandchildren...I just want to quilt...that's it.

And then today I just happened to drive a different way home (oh really??) and found myself at the Juki dealer...and I went in...and I looked at it...and I had a wee sew on it....and I fell in love...really, truly in love. And DH is picking up a new motorbike on the weekend so surely, surely I can have a new sewing machine...surely?

Shhhhhhh...just don't tell Bernice the Bernina.....anyhow, she might just like a new home with someone who wants to truly use all her capabilities...I'm doing her a favour aren't I????

Oh Ruby

Bernice sounds very tempting - but she is so far away from me.

Of course a new motorbike needs a new sewing machine for balance.  Juki and Bernia are made in the same facory, I'm sure you'll get on well with a Juki.

The Jukis waved to me at a quilt show last year...
I like my Bernina 550QE. I will probably never use all the fancy fonts and twiddly bits either, but it has the stitch regulator for fmq and a (really clunky but effective) walking foot, and that is what I wanted. It does all I ask without much trouble - a firm discussion (or a look in the instructions ::)) usually brings compliance with my wishes.

But if I was in the market for a new machine, I'd certainly look closely at a Juki. Not that any of us are enabling here, you understand ;).

Hi Francesca, I have a 710, got it for a bargain secondhand but it was a rush decision....(I have got to stay away from ebay!).  I've never 100% gelled with it and am probly too much of a clutz with it but sometimes you just don't know these things until afterwards.

Haha, DH is totally enabling me and has threatened to purchase it for me if I haven't done so within the fortnight! I knew I loved him for a reason, mind you, the Juki is only $1995 (Aus) and the motorbike is about $20,000 before we look at getting the sidecar re-sprayed to match! I think he wins  ;D

Just make sure there is room for the machine in the side car so you can sew on the move!

Life is very short go for it life is about realisations that only come to us after experience. Enjoy your new machine.

I don't blame you, my Grand Quilter never does a bad stitch, pokes a hole in everything without a whimper and doesn't mind when I forget to oil.  But, I do wish it had more needle positions and I would probably use it a lot more often.  My main machine has around 100 stitches and I probably use only one 99% of the time. Stupid really but I just wanted a machine that would do an automatic buttonhole, not that I do that many.

Definitely have the Juki. I think that's the way I'll go for my next machine. I'm sure you'll find someone to adopt Bernice, and if she's that fussy then she'll forget you quickly so don't fret over her!

I have that machine, though the previous model TL 98P.. it's a lovely stitch, produces the best top stitching ever. Great for FMQ! It's a great machine

Ah Ha! someone has been reading my mind!  I have been half considering exactly the same machine, and for similar reasons too!  I have a Pfaff Performance 5. with lots of bells and whistles, which was what I wanted at the time........I also have never quite gelled with it and I don't really know why - perhaps its a little finicky too?

I am tempted by the Juki, for the same reasons, good quality stitch, needle up/down, inbuilt cutter etc, and the ability to free motion easily.  Yes, I have a Singer 201k which produces the best stitch ever, but just a little difficult with needle up/down etc (oh I think I'm being Lazy)

Well, all I can say is, if you can afford it, have it! :D

Thankyou everyone for the enabling...I am teetering soooooo close to it...I'm wondering if it has a SITD foot or something similar?

What's a SIDT foot?... mine came with a walking foot and a compensating foot, two kinds of embroidery feet (FMQ).. I bought a ruffler foot

It's a foot that helps you more accurately stitch in the ditch or edge stitch.....the Bernina has a SITD foot plate for the walking foot and I use it for sewing my quilt binding on...one of the things I really like about the Bernina. sigh....

EDIT: Just realised that when I use the SITD foot to do my binding with the Bernina I do shift my needle position so oops.....I can't do that with the Juki. Is this a big enough negative for me? No, I don't think so...I'm still keen on the Juki.

Woo hoo....got the Juki today! Mr.Ruby bought me one for an early birthday present  and I sprung him trying to get it inside and hidden from me! So, it's sitting in its box, unopened under the sewing table for a few weeks....how good am I for self control!!!!!

Congratulations and happy sewing!
A couple of years ago I splashed out on a very expensive Janome machine because the Juki dealer was too far away, and at that time you could not buy them online.  (You can now).  I instantly regretted buying the Janome.  (I still have it, but it has barely been used and I never bonded with it).
About 9 months later I bought my longed for Juki machine, second hand from a TSF member, and it is my favourite machine, I absolutely love it!

Doesn't the 710 have the stitch regulator for free motion? I thought it would be ideal for quilting. Is one of your 99s in a cabinet? Some of the vintage machines are very underestimated, the 201 is still my favorite.

Either way, brand new is always exiting an let us know how it compares to your other machines.

Best of luck from me :- )

Juki's are fantastic machines, I had access to an industrial one in our sewing room at work and if I had to give up my Singer for any reason I'd go for a Juki to replace it any time.

Just awesome RD!  ;) But just how long can you keep your paws off it?

Yes Arrow, the 710 does have a stitch regulator but I find I struggle even with the large harp space of the 710. I sometimes think that it is just too delicate a machine to munch a quilt through despite fiddling with presser foot pressure etc. Don't get me wrong...it's a nice machine, love it for piecing but can be temperamental. I want a workhorse and I don't need all the computerised stuff and stitches that the Bernina gives me.

No, the 99's aren't in cabinets and I don't think I would have the coordination to use the 127 in the treadle and "think" quilting at the same time! That would definately do my head in!

DOB.....sneaked a peak in the box last night after Mr.Ruby went to bed  :ninja: but won't open it until I've got this current quilt ready and sorted for quilting...am at a bit of a stale mate with it atm.

Thankyou everyone for your congrats. :)

Well, the machine is unboxed and played with.

Pro's......love the feel of the machine, threading is easy, I love the sound of it when it sews, the feel of a basic mechanical grunt-worthy machine,  love the solid feet and love the straight stitch it does. I had read that the bobbin can be fiddly to get to...nah, easy peasy, and had read that the tension dial is a bit vague but so far...no problems there. It has needle up/down, speed control, presser foot pressure regulator, needle threader thingy,  auto cut and reverse.....all the "food groups" for me.

Cons....arrrrrrggghhhhhh I don't like the walking foot...can't see my needle or the seam when I am trying to do "close to SITD".  And the manual is pretty brief compared to the tome I got with the Bernina 710 (I know, I know...computerised machine etc etc). I also have to be careful with my heel on the pedal..keep forgetting if I "heel down" I activate the auto cutter!!  Lighting could be better but I've ordered some little stick on LED lights to go under the harp so that's all okay. The harp space is not quite as "long" as the 710 but it is much higher and in the little time I've had to play with it, stuffing a large quilt through it with that extra height is terrific...dare I say.....better than the larger harp length of the 710.

I thought the walking foot was a bit clunky but then I'm used to the Pfaff IDT system

Yep, reading through posts from other 2010 owners it seems to be a bit of a problem...not feeding fabric nicely (can attest to that in spades! ). Will just have to keep fiddling with it but I have read that others have replaced the walking foot with another.
Haha, I sorta like a noisy, clunky sound.....as long it's doing its' blessed job!!

Well that walking foot is definately going to a dark, dark place never to see the light of day again  in my opinion it is just woeful. So I have replaced it with another brand walking foot and oh my goodness, what a difference it has made. I have only done a few lines of SITD on my poor long suffering quilt that has been stitched and unpicked 3 times now and boy it has done a gorgeous job....beautiful stitches, no puckering and the machine just ploughs the quilt through. The smaller but taller harp space is terrific. I definately don't miss the larger width of the Bernina harp space.

For piecing I have found the 7mm guide line on the throat plate to be accurate and by placing my magnetic guide just a snitch inside the line I get a perfect 1/4", the 5mm mark giving a nice scant 1/4" if needed.

I am falling in love with this wonderful, no-nonsense, beautiful machine. :)

Glad the machines is working for you.  Which replacement brand of WF did you use?

I have just finished a quilt with the Juki and can only say that this machine is brilliant, just brilliant. IMO it is a confident, no nonsense machine which tackles the quilt and all its processes with ease.  FMQ....and I am a beginner at this...was terrific and the results only encourage me to practice more. Cleaning, changing bobbins, adjusting tension and presser foot pressure is all very easy to do. And so far, I have had no problems using either Aurafil or Gutterman threads.

There's a smile on my face a mile wide.
