I have put writing this off for over a month now but Im feeling brighter today and need to get this down and the weight of it off my overtaxed mind!
Early to mid Decemberish I decided to attempt a project that would take me far, far, far from my comfort zones where I have been making a nice warm nest for myself. I decided to start then as I strongly believe that starting anything on the 1st of January is psychologically doomed to failure.
I have decided, 301 years late to the party, to remake the 1700 coverlet!
The idea appeals to me;
My very very first 'quilt' was nothing of the sort ..... a top, very inexpertly made by someone who knew absolutely NOTHING about patchwork and piecing which once it was finished, was atrociously sewn to a sheet and called good. However this is the 'quilt' that is on my bed and I kind of love it for all its hideous inaccuracies and cock ups!
I had some knowledge of the 1700 jobby from FOQ this year;
I had seen the original ... which was all very Tutankhamumesque; Hidden within walls, sealed under glass, guarded by eagle-eyed UKQU Security you were ushered round and allowed 5 minutes of viewing only, and also seen the glorious interpretations in the 1700 coverlet competition, which ran amok with colour and design and of course I had seen Fajitas gorgeous recreation, made well early in 2015 or so!
Last November I found a Today's Quilter magazines 1700 coverlet supplement and after reading that from cover to cover bought the book and so the seed germinated.
I wanted to set myself some rules guidelines to try and keep out of my comfort zone so decided that I would ....
A) recreate it in, as much as possible, the same colourways and patterns of the original.
B) only use fabrics from stash* including alternative fabrics such as silk dupions if appropriate.
C) piece the blocks in the order placed in the book
And so I set to piecing .....
Block 1 ...
Size: 14 1/2" unfinished

Nope she was having none of it!
The first block (thankfully there are only two of them in the quilt) comprised of not only quite intricate appliqued pieces
but also mitred seams. Mercifully it was also one of the larger blocks in the quilt.
Fabrics used were an Oakshott blue stripe, a wheat coloured silk dupion, some hideous pink floral, a beautiful rust coloured FQ and the most gorgeous limeish green with a subtle feathered pattern.

Ok, that was relatively easy and quite satisfying, I had all the fabrics in stash and enjoyed blanket stitching the applique.

I've just had a little search and all I can say is..........Wow! My brain was fried just looking at the finished article. It is beautiful though and I'm looking forward to seeing its progression.

A brick coloured stripe and a beige patterned interior square ...
Ah ... I'm not big on beige patterned fabric, but I rootled around and found a little something that I thought might recreate the feel of the original.
Fabrics used a brick coloured cotton and some textured beige shiny stuff (please dont ask me what)

Now you may noticed that the points are less than 100% perfect; I really not going to get my knickers in a twist about that, they will be but 8 of 255 blocks (Gulp! :S ) so I think this will be lost in the overall composition.
There is already a join in the brick coloured cotton, which Yes! I have run out, which is slightly worrying!
but much more to the point is the fact that the four other QST's require a stripy pattern in a blue and yellow colourway which has completely thrown me!
I simply dont have anything like it in my stash, so here I am stumped at the third block!
Now you may or may not have noticed an * after one of the guidelines in the first post in this thread.
Did any of you notice that in that particular guideline I did not specify MY stash ????
So here I am, asking you girls, that if you have anything that could recreate the feel or look of the patterned fabrics in the 4 remaining blocks of block 3, would you consider sending a piece to me?
They neednt be craft cotton, could very well be a lightweight curtaining fabric or other and I dont need a lot; the blocks are 5" unfinished and I think (I made these mid-December) I'm cutting 6 1/2" squares to make these QST's but if somewhere in YOUR stash you have some remnant that might fill this space I would really really appreciate your help here ....

Well........flip,flap,flop me backwards and call me Minnie.... what a project to undertake......R.E.S.P.E.C.T I saw it and the interpretations at the FOQ and although it's not my :drink: ( I
can't don't do applique ) one couldn't help being in awe of the workwomanship.
Looking forward to following your progress @Iminei I'm sure it'll be just gorgeous.

I have some bits of green and yellow striped shirt fabric (charity shop buy). Looking at the original there appears to be several striped fabrics used. Watch out for the postman.

Totally not my types of fabric but as you can see a very good substitute for the fabrics needed for the last 4 QST's !!!

Oh Good! I had a look, but the fact that I have an irrational dislike of blue and yellow together means that I only have one fabric in predominantly those colours, and it definitely isn't striped. Or a small enough pattern for this. Or suitable for patchwork.

I know the direction of the stripes are wrong, but who is going to know?

I had to peer at the book and pics of the original quilt for quite a while until I figured out there were actually 3 colours in one of the blocks, a dark moss green and a very dark blue (as far as I could tell) as well as the light coloured cross.
Apparently these two lil 2 1/2" squares of dark blue are the only ones in the entire top as this colour was extremely rare in the 18th century.... in fact apart from the black fabric used these are the darkest colours in the coverlet.

Laundered yes, but not freshly laundered! They have been well matured in my stash boxes
Those fabrics all came from charity shop shirts, thrown into the washing machine as soon as I got them home, then all the seams and fiddly bits cut off and the buttons salvaged. It's a good way of getting striped fabrics at minimal cost. The back of a shirt is about the same size as a FQ, the sleeves and fronts another 2 FQs all for less than a full price FQ in the P&Q shop right opposite a couple of charity shops.

Well they still smelled beautifully fresh to my nose at least!
I will still be looking for fabrics that I simply havent got ... so if YOU do ... Please please spare a thought for me!

I had a good 10 cms wof of it, and I cant for the life of me think its all gone on a lil bit of applique so I'm going to have a damn good rootle round to see if I can find it.

Back to piecing a background and then some lovely relaxing applique.
I enjoyed these.

It's putting mine to shame. I'm glad I made mine when I knew no better, I'd be scared to begin it now, lol.
I used to keep my finished blocks in a concertina file. Ten to a section I think it was. Made keeping tabs on the pieces nice and straightforward.

Not true at all.... I have tried innumerable times and I cannot get the stitches in the right place :angry: I can do it by hand, but that's clumsy on small pieces. No way can I master it by machine....you know that @Iminei you have seen my efforts :|

On the contrary ... I remember showing you how to applique, If I remember an L on a piecec of fabric, one of which was green ... :devil: ... but have never seen your attempt.
Go SLOWLY, learn the rhythm of the stitch ... in the case of my favourite, blanket stitch ... its two stitches along the side of the motif, one stitch down, then a swing to left (and a step to the riiiigghhht, its a pelvis thhrrruuuusttt and bring your knees in tiiiiighhhht!) Oops Sorry! a swing back to the right and then two stitches forward again. You soon learn where you can stop and turn the piece and when the needles going to swing over.

I have discovered that I really dont own any striped fabrics in my stash, so have had to start making fabric. I used a green voile and a green satin ribbon on a calico background for the top right hand block.

I went a bit off piste with this block as I had no single lined blue striped fabric, so I took some ticking a did something a lil different, I quite like it and once more I created one of the fabrics with some gold edged ribbon.
Well it will be interesting if I continue in this way wont it?

I don't think it needs a 'colour scheme' so long as there isn't a hi viz orange or fluorescent pink shouting out in the middle of it. I presume the maker of the original was jusr using what she had and you will make yours all the more unique by doing likewise (can something be more unique?)
It will be one of those things where you will see something different every time you look at it.

Back to the ribbon box ... and I must admit it already looks a lil more like the original than it should as after making the first striped fabric, the iron, as usual on superhot, caught it and melted a lil bit of the voile ribbon!

God No! @Lowena ... Its just an excercise to see if I can stray out of my comfort zone and keep to my self imposed guidelines for the duration ...
As one of those is to make this completely from stash, I have already fallen awry, that is until BrendaP came to my rescue with the Fast running out) shirting fabrics ...So if any of you girls (and boys) have any old fashioned striped/damask type fabrics that you are thinking of chucking ????

Just received an envelope full of some very interesting fabrics, that will no doubt pop up during the creation of these blocks ... one very interesting fabric in particular, would add a bit of subtle bling!

I had to make fabrics for these ... some of the squares looked like they had diagonal strips so I made HSTs from beautiful deep Oakshott blues and greens and then there was the wide green stripe ... Out came the ribbon box!
I also struggled with the bottom left block as the design for the Blue/Green blocks was, to my mind, wrong ...
It could have been a lovely star type block but I stuck to my rules and its true to the original layout ... Woo Hoo!

I found this one (of 2, 2 coming soon) fiddly to do and in the end gave up on the patterned bit between the birds tails but am reasonably pleased with it now, but it was very labour (and fusi) intensive.
I may yet add a thin strip of ribbon for the bottom of the bell, but I was tired by the end of this and knew better than to carry on.
The ribbon is still to be added by=ut 2 of 2 has been made ...

I had to make the fabric for the applique and also piece the background, which for some reason came up 1/4" short of the 5" unfinished ...D'OH! But they look nice enough as long as I remember that when piecing the quilt together...

You could add on a length along the 1/4" short seam. Cut to correct size. The extra bit will be in the seam once it's made up, and not visible.

You could do the first three rows, it would certainly make keeping track of the blocks easier but it might curtail your creative juices should you decide on a better layout than the original.

And I'm using whatever I can get my hands on to get the overall feel (not necessarily the exact colour or patterns ... please see last pair of blocks) of the original blocks???
But it would give some impetus to see at least part of it together .... sooooooo

What's the minimum sizes of the scraps you'd find useful? I might have some plain silk in fairly neutral colours but I'm not sure how big they are.
I recently had a clearout of fabric scraps and I did bear you in mind...I do lots of trouser/jeans shortening, and much of it was that type of stuff which got sent for recycling.

Im there is a little parcel on it's way to you to which I've added some fadey, beigey, stripey things that you might be able to use for this project. The louder ones could maybe do with a trip round the inside of a teapot! No silks I'm afraid though. :)

Well after posing the question here and talking to an old friend about it, I decided to wade on in and sew the first three rows together.
I'm glad I did as, as many of the blocks were similar I had a problem identifying which blocks went where.

I've just been going through my stash of silk - and have sorted out enough bits to cut out this (https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/644978634/zambeesi-jacket-womens-pdf-sewing?ref=shop_home_feat_4)and there are quite a few bits left, mostly darker purples and pinks. Some of it dates back to the David Evans closing down sale sometime in the 1980s IIRC :o Plains and prints, I'll have another sort through and send you some scraps.

Expect a little fabric bundle to arrive in the next day or two. I sorted out some of my old silk scraps and have sent a selection of colours which look as if they might be suitable. :)

These blocks took an age as I have to piece the background before appliqueing twice and then stitching round but its steady work and the results are worth it ..

I am such a lucky lucky girl to have such kind and thoughtful friends on here!
It started early this year with a parcel from Brenda containing striped shirting then over the past week the postie has been regularly knocking on my door bringing me bundles of preloved loveliness for this project ...
Im now silked up to the skies and beyond and only hope that these gorgeous new fabrics wont make subsequent blocks too different from the ones already made ... luckily I had used some silks within them but not the glorious stripes and silks I now have in my hot lil hands ...

These were a nightmare!
Some are true 5"sq, a couple needs some imagination to be called square.
The sooner I can sew these into a row the better as one of the fabrics (SES) frays like buggery.
Still I made 6 of these (2 went straight into the bin) and could (If I had the patience) go back and redo them...
And they would be better as I know where I went wrong (I think)
Who knows I just might !

Two things...1. Keep the book and the wee scribbled notes (including points don't match) so that they can be displayed together.
2. What is that dotty fabric with the gold? You use it a lot (I may even be looking at a piece of it right now) and I love it.

That is lovely. It feels as though you have the colours judged perfectly so that they reflect the colour of the original as it was in its heyday, which is so much better - and more authentic, IMO - than creating something that looks like an antique.

Yours is coming along so well. It's a great job for keeping a person busy, but as each individual block is not large, it doesn't become too overwhelming.

As I've been away so long I stabilized my silk inner triangles with Heat N Bond ...D'OH!
So if anyone in the distant future analysed this particular quilt, they would find tissue paper stuck underneath these particular blocks!
You might think Ive gone slightly off piste with the colours for this block, but in fact the original coverlet had black silk for half of the inner triangles (now rotted away) so I used a very dark blue (tie) silk to pick up the powder blue needlecord and a light corn coloured silk to pick up the gorgeous earth coloured hand dyed fabric, which was gifted to me by a friend.

Using Elvis's prowess and some beautiful donated silk, I completed this block and then stitched the next two rows of the quilt to the first three. Sorry I have no individual pic of this one ...
As you can see Im being realistic on a finish date for this!
Im now musing on seamless QAYG ala BrendaP with this project ... Ive completed 5/17ths of this so almost a third ... which is too big to hang on a coat hanger whilst it awaits the rest of the blocks but would be manageable for me to quilt hhhhmmmmm ....

One of these strips was scantly cut as I was running out of the fabric and consequently came up short so I backed it with a paper bag to enable me to keep it 4 1/2" sq when I come to assemble.

Im now facing a conundrum in that Im coming to the first animal blocks ...
Do I follow suit with dodgy colours etc or
Do I cut and applique silhouettes of the animals ???
Or do I quilt around animal templates on the blocks ...
which would give the same sort of effect as block 25 below???

The silk I need help identifying are some blocked pieces in beiges, browns, taupes and blue and white stripes.
They feel very odd, stiff but slippy, fray and when you cut them, and when cut with a RC generally adhere to the mat ... Pretty sure they are curtain offcuts ... Anyone got a clue??

It’s looking wonderful and must be so interesting to do, especially with all the bits and pieces from TSPers. Ah!...as far as I know, they're 100% silk...(excluding the yellow buggery one)...but I've no idea what type of fabric you'd call them.
I thought they seemed like they'd be used for curtains, even though they're quite thin. Nice quality stuff, especially the blue and white.

These went together wonderfully until I came to the yellow/black/copper/blue set ... Take two very slippery faux fabrics one of which frays alarmingly and try and sew them together and you're heading for trouble ...
I might go back and redo them ... or I might not!

Just love this lil notice that flaps up and tells me what a bad girl Ive been leaving things so long ...
and YES I do want to post within this topic, thats why I spent 10 minutes looking through pages of Darkside threads to find it .....
So today, finally I made the last block needed to complete the next row of this quilt ...
Then I sewed the row together...
and then I attached it to the bottom of the quilt so far
and NOW Im debating whether to layer and quilt it before bracing myself for the BIG blocks that come next ...
