Thank you for the very generous head start on this. Several of the contenders for my 6PAC fit this category.

I have the most outrageous fabric bought in Charlee Girl's closing down sale and it would be ideal for this but do I have the courage to tackle stretchy? Prolly not.  :(

wrenkins, stretch fabric can sense fear.  Just approach calmly and handle gently but firmly.  Kind of like a puppy.

Confession time:  I've never ironed a knit.  Spandex does not like heat.  It will do stupid things if you heat it too much.

wrenkins, it's a great visual but that's bad.  It has to be a problem with the manufacturing.  Actually, I have attached iron-on interfacing to a knit - very carefully.  So, I have technically ironed some.  If the cut pieces roll, you could try double sided washaway tape to hold them together when you sew.  I've made a set of dance costumes with a striped knit with the structural integrity of wet tissue.  If I looked at it, it shifted out of alignment.  I had to lay it out crosswise because if the stripes were horizontal, they looked like a patch-eyed drunken pirate had cut it out on a ship in a hurricane.

Stretchy tartan  :o
If it's knitted it will have to have the tartan/checked design printed onto it. >:)
What are the chances of it being printed straight, not to mention the curling.  I think it will be a £&^^!*  to sew. :ninja:
I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do with it  -<

In my head I am swanning about in perfectly fitted T-shirts and girlie dresses. I'm deluded I don't even own a dress and if I did I wouldn't wear it which is why I haven't got one...

It just happens that two of the fabrics in my 10kg lucky dip haul is checked.

There's a big piece, 4m x 165cm of a dark burgundy printed with pink which is very stretchy and of course does roll which I think might make a nice winter dress.  I'll be happy giving that a go.

The other piece is woven poly suiting, coffee colour with chocolate stripes, now whilst I like the taste of both coffee and chocolate they are definitely not my colours for wearing! :ninja:  Not sure if I could do anything I'd like with it.  It's a much smaller piece, 1.4m x 145cm.

I do. I've even used it to finish edges of things!
It's the cutting out. How do you make it just lie there and stop wriggling about? With wovens you set them down and they stay there. With stretch you can stick it to the carpet, table, cutting surface in any shape you don't want.  :(

Cotton jersey behaves pretty well, usually.  Even with added lycra.  Some of my Girl Charlee fabrics are very stretchy though.  Not sure whether there's something else in there with the cotton and lycra, or they ahve a special way of making it stretchy.

I found laying knits on my quilting mat is excellent. Doesn't stick to anything at all. Just wish I had more table space than the 35"x26“ or whatever the big mat is

@wrenkins I don't usually have too much of a problem with jersey. If you take a run at it you will be fine. Wildly patterned stretchy tartan sounds fabulous. Can't wait to see your creation.  :D

Must have a go at this competition... rummages through stash for wildly patterned stretchy tartan.....

Actually there's a nice piece of tartan in my charity shop pile. May have to rescue it.

Each month we have different sewalongs and competitions to make people do stuff they don't want to encourage people to maybe try new things or give them ideas for something a little different. Sometimes, like @BrendaP , it gives people a little nudge to hunt through stash and use up some nice pieces; all sorts of reasons.
The items are then entered in a competition and the winner gets a gorgeous 'WINNER' badge or patch and lots of glory and adulation.
This month, as you can see, is in honour of youis tartans, plaids and checks so get your thinking cap on. It can be anything.  0_0

Would a scarf work? I'm not sure I have the time or the figure for pencil skirts or dresses. Although, for Halloween one year someone suggested I go as the Joker in the nurses uniform from Batman. My mates missus who was a nurse measured us and I'm reliably informed I'm a size 10. She still wont speak to me

Anyway, scarf be ok? How do you even make a scarf?!

I would say that a scarf is more of an accessory, but if @TartanPaint wants to make one start with a rectangular and then finish the edges.  The bonus is that there is no tricky pattern matching to worry about.

The prerequisite for all our competitions is sewing @TartanPaint  :)
The rules this year specify a garment but I think I remember a discussion before about upholstering...

Found it in the House Beautiful comp.

3. The items entered must include a significant sewn component. Remember this is a sewing competition, not a craft contest. (Eg: a sewn slipcover would qualify, but reupholstering a chair using only a staple gun would not qualify.)

I've always wanted to go to Portmeirion since then. Have any of you been?

I've never watched The Prisoner (too young!) but I have been to Portmeirion a few times.  It is an amazing place.  Strange but beautiful.

I feel the pain @BrendaP ... so is plaid matching on a patchwork fabric. It took me half a day to cut a shirt dress.

@Renegade Sewist I have been to Portmeirion several times. We stayed in the hotel there for 3 nights for my 70 th birthday.
We also have standardised on Portmeirion plates and table ware.
PS. My younger son was / is a big Prisoner fan, so I was well adult when it was first on

I was too young when The prisoner originally aired (1967-1968) and didn't realise it had such a short run with only 17 episodes.  There is also a radio version which might still be up on BBC sounds.

@TartanPaint[/member], at a guess and it is a guess because I can't get a close enough picture to see it properly, I'd say it's either a brushed cotton or a soft cotton but if you want to be really posh you could go for a heavier silk or satin.
Only 9 pattern pieces

A robe was the first thing I made when I came back to sewing. I made it in a decent weight cotton and it came out beautifully IISSM. I did French seams which I'd never done before and it was very straightforward.
I used this (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/McCalls-Ladies-Easy-Sewing-Pattern-2476-Dressing-Gown-Nightgown-Pyjama-/372279646594) one because it has trousers and shorts too. I made the trousers with my leftovers but we could all get in them...at the same time!

I've only got ladies patterns but basically they are all the same in that style, except you fold ladies to the left or men's to the right. This one is a Kwik Sew no 3644

Well I'm thinking of having a go at the Stylearc Rana coat pattern here (https://www.stylearc.com/shop/pdf-sewing-patterns/rana-designer-coat-pdf/) with this wool tartan which I got yonks ago for a splendid £5 pm from Fabricland online (then saw it for £15 pm in John Lewis). It calls for a ribbed knit collar which I shall make either from a maroon cotton knit or from a wool/acrylic knit from a knitted skirt which was about to go to the charity shop - probably the latter as the maroon cotton knit isn't as bright and is a bit too much like the colour of my old school uniform (let's not give ourselves nightmares). The tartan is a lot pinker than the tomatoey shade which it appears in this photo and I think I have enough for appropriate pattern matching...  ('last words' and 'famous' spring to mind);.

I think the line drawing of the pattern is really nice but the versions that Stylearc did are in really drab fabrics - which might explain why there are no reviews of the pattern. I'm planning on something much more eye catching!

That's lovely. Looks like a good heavy weight too. 60". I could probably buy a couple of metres, take the fabric off the chair and use the old leather as a template. Might even have enough left to do the footstool.

Thanks for thinking of me.

I have a chair I would like to cover and all the experts recommend that you take the cover off and use it as a template. I need to pluck up the nerve to destroy a perfectly good chair just because it's ugly!  My sister-in-law has done it and she made a good job of it so it's doable. Mine has wooden arms so there'll be fitting issues!  :S We should make a gang with @Syrinx and have upholstery counselling sessions.  :faints:

Yep @Syrinx, that’s the right attitude. Life’s too short for ugly face mask, we might as well have fun with them. Restaurants are now allowed to open until 9pm (bars and pubs are still closed), so we went out for dinner last weekend. I wore the mask with LEDs in and put a smile in many faces.
I made another one for one of my tutees, a 6 year old boy. He was over the moon with his very special mask. His mum sent me pictures of him out and a bout wearing it proudly.

Brenda P's entry

A dress for myself

Pattern used
A Franken-hack.  The top half is the princess bodice from "Gertie's Ultimate Dress Book (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gerties-Ultimate-Dress-Book-Fabulous/dp/1617690759/ref=asc_df_1617690759/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=255630880467&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14468587190056380980&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006944&hvtargid=pla-420882407934&psc=1&th=1&psc=1)" and the skirt is Simplicity 2449 (https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/36157), view D/E

What  fabrics you used
A stretch jersey printed with the plaid design, quite heavy, almost Ponte but much stretchier.  It came as the biggest piece in a 10kg lucky dip bag from Immanuel's

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc.
Pattern matching on stretch fabric is the work of the devil
I managed the vertical seams including the back zip but the bodice had to be eased onto the skirt and it's a bit stretched out there.

Sewing on the overlocker was easy but the coverstitcher really didn't like the fabric and I ended up top stitching the neck with the regular machine.

In hindsight I think it might have been better to cut the neckline a little lower, omit the zip and facings and do a bound neck.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

It is a dark coloured fabric and definitely needs to be worn with a brightly coloured scarf!
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

On the plus side there was enough fabric left to make a pair of winter leggings for Pilates.  I used KwikSew 3636 (https://www.sewessential.co.uk/misses-leggings-kwik-sew-sewing-pattern-3636?gclid=Cj0KCQjwnqH7BRDdARIsACTSAdvKIlOJ1O5VeIp66zR1OgGzrmQcrGrmb8MDir0I-rnm5sC1LrqZWlwaAvQ9EALw_wcB) with my own adjustments including making the body longer to sit on the natural waistline which I find more comfortable.  Will normally be worn with a teeshirt outside.

Just back from hols and finding the tartans and plaids thread has been hijacked by programming reminiscences.
Sorry!  Would it make it better if I dug out a nice plaid type cotton and made a blouse?

Actually I find reminiscing about old programming languages quite refreshing @toileandtrouble . I taught computing for a number of years and was a tutor on some labs where I never quite got round to learning the programming language the students were using. I think I am probably safe from legal action now....

@wrenkins I had a lovely week in Wales where it didn't rain at all and I had to buy suntan lotion... in Wales.... in September.

Then we had a couple of days in the Lake District with DD and DD's dog or DDD. On our last day she decided to have a walk up one of those mountains for which the Lake District is famous. After a walk around the foothills we  the fond parents,  decided to hover about anxiously at the bottom wondering exactly when to call mountain rescue. They eventually appeared. No problem at all but the poor dog was exhausted and he's a collie. I think he's going to ask us to take him so he can lead a quieter life.

Now I'm going to lock myself in the sewing room with my tartan. I pinned and cut out a StyleArc coat a couple of weeks ago and I will now remove the paper pattern to reveal whether or not I have got the pattern matching right. @BrendaP has set the bar very high on the pattern matching front!

YES!  That could be our forfeit since it was me started it.

Fairly high for that stretchy fabric maybe, but if it had been a woven I wouldn't have been at all happy.   :\

I'm so loathe to cut into my nice tartan for this pencil skirt.

I was hoping my sloper would be sorted but it's just not working. And the pattern I have for a pencil skirt is really straight and not very tapered below the hip, and needed taking in a little there anyway, not to mention the waist needed taking in. Considering shaving half an inch off the whole pattern and hoping that fixes it. hmmmmm

Not to mention I'm going to have to work out how to add a lining to it.

Four more days to gather up your tartans, checks, squares... and get sewing.
Plenty of time to fashion something fab-u-lous!

Hi peeps.
Due to a slight technical glitch in the innards the original thread has been temporarily suspended until the gremlins have been caught and dealt with.
Please post your entries to this thread in the mean time.
I have copied the rules and regs to the first post in this thread so carry on as normal and pretend nothing happened.
@BrendaP your entry is safe and sound.  :)

Entry #1

It is a dark coloured fabric and definitely needs to be worn with a brightly coloured scarf!

So I was just about to cut and sew my tartan pencil skirt only to discover the invisible zip I have is the wrong colour. It is the last day of the contest today so I shall bow out the pencil skirt and work on it in a less rushed fashion. Which leaves me with just my pinafore and mask combo (that I wore to London yesterday and got a lovely comment on!). So I shall sort the pics out and enter it now.

Syrinx's entry. Alas now the only one!

Pinafore dress with matching shaped face covering.

The pinafore pattern is KwikSew 4138

I used a Lewis and Irene quilting cotton for this. I fancied a lightweight pinafore but one that wasn't too flmisy so this fabric was perfect. The silver/grey line has some shimmer to it. Annoyingly the checks are printed on bias not on grain so the whole outfit is on point!

It came together relatively well, only one adjustment to the pockets as I have found this pattern makes the pocket openings too large/pocket itslef not deep enough. But then I just love big pockets! The fabric check was on the bias so I had to change my picture in my head to have the checks at a jaunty angle. Luckily the printing was pretty accurate and solid so it being on point wasn't too much of a pain. Pattern matched the pocket on the bib. Spent an age gathering the fabric for the waist so that it was neat and even. I still have issues with this pattern regarding the waistband parts as one end is longer than the other but it's a tad tricky to get it to work properly and the r/l markings are not helpful. Still I got the lapped zip in and the button flap no problem. This is the firt time I've made the skirt version and I really love it as a pattern for a skirt. Tempted to use the skirt pattern solo and just make a wider waistband at some point.

Lilian's Entry

What is it and for whom – Dress for me

Pattern used  - Prima exclusive July 2020 - View A size 14

What fabrics you used  - A woven fabric, not sure what it is but it's quite fine, cotton/viscose feel.  It was free at my sewing group, a lady brought loads of fabric to give away.  There was just enough to cut this dress and a matching face mask.

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc. - As per pattern, a straightforward make with some small adjustments to shoulder as I have square shoulders.  Adjustments for a bit more shape. All edges overlocked as the fabric frays and creases easily.

Starryfish's Entry
Burda 6291 skirt with front pleats. Maroon wool with black check.
I made view B, the slightly shorter version, but omitted the self fabric belt. The wool is too thick, and it would have added too much bulk at the waist.

As usual it is fairly dark in the only place in the house I can take photos. The skirt is part of the 6PAC I will be entering in the competition. It is a nice winter weight in our not that warm house (It would be if DH would turn the heating on for longer).
