Title: Crosshatch quilt, unintentional patterns
Post by: Sheilago on June 10, 2019, 00:28:12 AM
Have just sewn the last blocks to my crosshatch quilt, which is intended as a wedding quilt for my daughter. It still has a 6” border of light then dark strips to be added.  I wanted it to be practical , with not too much light fabric and a range of colours to match different rooms.
I laid out the blocks 2 rows at a time, when I was sewing the blocks, but now it’s all together I see unintentional patterns, especially when I took a photo e.g. from 7 down and 6 in to 9 down and 4 in there’s a very dark strip. The idea is that the darkish strips go left to right and the lightish ones right to left. Should I try to reposition some of the blocks or just accept the randomness? Only 6 weeks to the wedding, so need to get on!

I think it looks lovely as it is, and no jiggery pokery is necessary.

Leave it, that's how it wants to be!

When is your delivery date for this?
Mine is the 2nd August ... and hopefully I will be layering the quarters today!
Than full steam ahead!

It looks great in its randomness, leave it s it is
I lay out blocks and take a picture to squint at before I sew them together.

Looks terrific just as it is. I wouldn't change anything.

I join with the majority - leave it as it is - it looks great!

Thanks for the advice. Sometimes it’s hard to decide when you’re looking at it yourself. I was a bit mad with myself that I didn’t lay out all the individual blocks first as @Ploshkin says. I always do that with small quilts, but this was so big I thought I’d do it in sections.

That’s fine, I’ll get started on the sandwiching now. :D

It’s for 20 July, @Iminei , but really as mother of the bride I don’t want to be quilting in the last 2 weeks, so will try to get it done by about 6 July. I thought I might quilt some suitable quote onto the border , so I’m off to search for something online.

Yes leave it as it is.  :loveit:

That's the nature of randomness, and no matter what you do with the blocks you are always going to have that secondary pattern going on.

I can't see any secondary pattern  :(

All I can see is a beautiful crosshatched quilt made with a lot of love!

I don't mind green in other people's work, in fact I can admire it.... I just can't bring myself to use it myself......except in a colour emergency  :D

There’s now even more green- borders are on and I’ve spent hours crawling around doing the putting together. I feel like I’ve been to an exercise class! Now I remember why I really like baby quilts 0_0.

Phew, that’s the quilt completely finished: binding and label all stitched and 3 weeks to go until the big day!  :D So glad as there will lots of other things to do now.
Can’t post any photos tonight as I’d need to hang it up outside and it’s very wet here this evening. Thunderstorms once again.

Here are the finished photos , now the rain has stopped ( temporarily) though this quilt is so big the rope wouldn’t go high enough to get it all in.

Thank you all for your kind comments. It’s the biggest quilt I’ve ever made ( my bed quilt is really too small), so I’m glad it worked out and it’s all done. Big quilts just seem physically more demanding: lifting them, layering them, squashing them through the machine to quilt them! I did toy with QAYG, but decided to stick with what I know for this one, so just did free motion swirls, flowers, leaves and hearts, with some writing in the border. Nearly all my quilts are scrappy- I just love the variety of fabrics and blending them together.
